TOKYO, April 1 (Xinhua) — Japan's opposition Democratic People's Party chairman Yuichiro Tamaki said the country's government should apologize to China for the forced entry of an armed Self-Defense Forces officer into the Chinese Embassy in Tokyo.

Speaking at a press conference on Tuesday, the politician called the incident a serious one that should never have happened, calling on the government to take full responsibility for it.

Yuichiro Tamaki emphasized that Japan failed to fulfill its obligations to ensure the security of the Chinese diplomatic mission and therefore must issue an official apology.

On March 24, 23-year-old Second Lieutenant Kodai Murata of the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force, armed with a knife, climbed over the wall into the Chinese Embassy compound in Tokyo.

The incident has sparked widespread concern due to its seriousness and potential consequences. For now, the Japanese government has limited itself to calling the incident "regrettable." This stance has met with criticism.

UN, April 1 /Xinhua/ — Reform of the UN mandate system should be aimed at achieving tangible results and avoiding formalism, bureaucracy, and past mistakes such as the creation of redundant and duplicative structures, Sun Lei, China's Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN, said on Tuesday.

"China supports the UN in reforming and renewing itself, in its efforts to keep pace with the times and better fulfill the mandates entrusted to it by member states," the diplomat said.

Sun Lei emphasized that the reform must be consistent with the purposes and principles of the UN Charter, effectively guarantee the leadership and equal participation of all Member States, and promote the three main areas of the organization's activities in a balanced manner.

China will work with all countries and the UN Secretariat to play a constructive role in supporting the long-term development of the UN and reforming and improving global governance, he said.

As a reminder, the UN General Assembly on Tuesday adopted a historic resolution aimed at strengthening how UN mandates are formed, implemented, and reviewed. –0–

Moscow, April 1 (Xinhua) — Russia has launched driverless trucks on the M-12 "Vostok" highway, which connects St. Petersburg, Moscow, and Kazan via a single transport corridor. The Kremlin press service announced this on Tuesday.

"A good example of such innovation is driverless transport, which has already proven its cost-effectiveness. Driverless vehicles have traveled 13 million kilometers on roads without incident," Russian President Vladimir Putin noted at the opening ceremony of the transport infrastructure facilities via videoconference.

Russian Transport Minister Andrei Nikitin spoke about the potential economic benefits of using driverless trucks, adding that during a test drive, an autonomous truck covered the distance between Kazan and St. Petersburg (1,600 km) in 24 hours, while a truck with a driver took 58 hours to complete the same journey.

Previously, driverless trucks were launched on the M-11 (Moscow-St. Petersburg) highway and the Central Ring Road (the ring road in the Moscow region).

Russian Deputy Prime Minister Vitaly Savelyev emphasized that the pilot project to launch driverless trucks began in 2023. He stated that over the past three years, the fleet of driverless trucks has increased from three to 95 vehicles.

“We expect that the technological solutions being developed with businesses and the regulatory framework being created by the government will allow us to increase the number of driverless trucks on the roads to four thousand by 2030,” noted V. Savelyev. –0–

BEIJING, April 1 (Xinhua) — China on Wednesday opened the National Climate Observatory in Xiong'an New Area, north China's Hebei Province, becoming the 27th of its kind.

According to the China Meteorological Administration, the observatory consists of one main station and eight auxiliary stations, covering four major ecosystem types, ranging from urban areas to forests, wetlands and farmlands.

Key meteorological observation data will be transmitted in real time to a meteorological big data cloud platform, further enhancing the efficiency of climate monitoring and assessment, the accuracy of forecasts and warnings, and the level of meteorological service provision for various industries.

As a reminder, on April 1, 2017, China announced plans to establish the Xiong'an New Area, located approximately 100 kilometers southwest of Beijing. This new area, dubbed "City of the Future," significantly advances the implementation of various projects to free Beijing from non-capital functions that are not essential to its role as the country's capital and transfer them to Xiong'an, as well as promote the coordinated development of the Beijing-Hebei-Tianjin region.

Once operational, the climate observatory will not only perform climate observation tasks but also conduct research in several key areas, providing more reliable support for climate resource analysis, climate change monitoring and assessment, and disaster risk identification.

In recent years, the meteorological authorities of Xiong'an New Area have been steadily promoting the development of "smart meteorology" by establishing an integrated monitoring network.

“We will continue to enhance our capabilities in meteorological disaster risk monitoring and early warning, environmental and meteorological services, and urban infrastructure services,” said Guo Yitao, deputy head of the new observatory. -0-

Beijing, April 1 (Xinhua) — The N.P. Osipov National Academic Orchestra of Folk Instruments of Russia will perform five concerts in the Chinese capital from April 2 to 5. The Zhongxinshe news agency reported this on its official website on Tuesday, citing a source at the National Center for the Performing Arts (NCPA).

As has been announced, the orchestra will perform under the baton of conductor Vladimir Andropov. During concerts featuring classical Russian national musical instruments such as the balalaika, domra, gusli, and button accordion, the musicians will showcase both their virtuoso playing skills and the profound cultural heritage of this musical power.

It's worth noting that Chinese concertgoers will have the chance to hear two classic Eastern melodies – "Silk Road" and "Flowers Are Beautiful and the Moon Is Full" – in a purely Russian interpretation.

Founded in 1919, the National Academic Orchestra of Folk Instruments of Russia named after N. P. Osipov is one of the oldest orchestras in Russia and is considered a national treasure of Russia and a “calling card” of its culture.

As a reminder, in January-February 2025, the Russian orchestra also performed five concerts in Beijing during the Spring Festival (Chinese New Year) holidays, as well as in May 2024 at the opening ceremony of the China-Russia Cross-Cultural Years and a special concert dedicated to the 75th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries.
