Suifenhe, Heilongjiang Province, Sept. 28 (Xinhua) — A project to upgrade and modernize the railway section from Suifenhe in northeast China's Heilongjiang Province to the national border of the Harbin-Suifenhe Railway, an important part of the "eastern corridor" of China-Europe rail freight routes, was completed on Saturday.

Thus, the operation of China-Europe freight trains running through the Suifenhe railway checkpoint will continue on the modernized line, which will increase the speed of trains on it from 55 km/h to 120 km/h, and more than double the throughput capacity.

The Harbin–Suifenhe Railway, with a history spanning over 100 years, is Heilongjiang Province's largest rail transport corridor to Russia. The city of Suifenhe is located in the central zone of the Northeast Asian Economic Circle.

The aforementioned project, launched in May 2024 by the Harbin branch of China Railways, includes the construction of a tunnel, three bridges, and six roadbeds. Its commissioning will further expand cross-border transportation capabilities and improve railway safety.

NANJING, Sept. 28 (Xinhua) — The Wuxi Symphony Orchestra in east China's Jiangsu Province is departing for Russia, where it will launch a musical dialogue that will resonate across the Eurasian continent.

As an important project within the framework of the China-Russia Years of Culture and at the invitation of the Russian Ministry of Culture and the Russian National Orchestra, the Wuxi Symphony Orchestra will perform joint concerts with the Russian National Orchestra in Novosibirsk, Moscow, and St. Petersburg from late September to early October.

This tour is particularly significant, as it will be the first overseas tour by the entire Wuxi Symphony Orchestra since its founding. Under the direction of Artistic Director and Principal Conductor Lin Daye, the Chinese musicians will present a musical feast to Russian audiences that blends tradition and modernity.

The tour program included original works by the orchestra's artistic director, composer Li Shaosheng – "Wuxi Overture" and the second part of the symphonic suite "Flying to Heaven" – "Questioning the Sky", as well as classical works such as "Symphony No. 1 in C minor" by Johannes Brahms.

It is worth noting that “Wuxi Overture” and “Questioning Heaven” will be performed abroad for the first time.

Speaking about these two works, Li Shaosheng is full of anticipation: “They are musical ambassadors of Chinese culture. ‘Wuxi Overture’ is a testament to the growth of the Wuxi Symphony Orchestra, embodying a profound love for the city’s historical changes and dynamic development. ‘Flying to the Sky’ is a new work completed this year. In the second part, ‘Questioning the Sky,’ we collaborate with Chinese suona (traditional Chinese musical instrument) player Zhang Qianyuan to combine the ancient Chinese instrument with international artistic expression and confidently tell Chinese stories to the world.”

One of the highlights of this tour will be another joint performance by musicians from the Wuxi Symphony Orchestra and the Russian National Orchestra.

"In October 2024, the Russian National Orchestra visited Wuxi and performed the concert 'Hello, Friend!' with us. The musical harmony that unfolded is still unforgettable," recalls Lin Daye. "Now the Wuxi Symphony Orchestra is traveling to Russia, performing in the holy land of classical music, which is a source of immense pride. Collaborating again with these outstanding cultural figures is a rare learning opportunity for our young ensemble, giving us complete confidence in demonstrating the orchestra's international artistic aspirations."

"This collaboration is not only between two orchestras, but also a symbol of friendship. During my musical education, I studied many works of Russian classical music. We also sincerely admire the performance technique of top-class Russian musicians, their understanding of music, and their interpretation of their national music," added Lin Daye.

"The Wuxi Symphony Orchestra is one of the city's cultural symbols. We hope this tour will showcase the charm of Chinese music and the orchestra's artistic excellence to Russian audiences, and will also allow the world to see Wuxi's open-minded attitude," said Wu Simin, Chairman and General Director of the Wuxi Symphony Orchestra. He expressed hope that this tour will allow more people to hear the voice of Wuxi and fall in love with this warm and cultural city.

JERUSALEM, Sept. 28 (Xinhua) — Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz said Saturday that more than 750,000 residents have fled Gaza City as the military intensifies its offensive in the enclave.

According to I. Katz, Israel has entered the "decisive" phase of its operation. "Autonomous military vehicles equipped with explosives have been deployed ahead of the troops to defuse explosive devices, and fire support from the air and ground to protect maneuvering troops is sufficiently intense and powerful," his office said in a statement.

He warned that unless Hamas released all Israeli hostages and began disarming, "Gaza and Hamas will be destroyed."

Before Israel ordered mass evacuations and launched its offensive, Gaza City was home to about 1 million people. –0–

New Delhi, September 27 (Xinhua) — The death toll from a stampede at a rally in southern India on Saturday has risen to 38, with most of the victims being women and children, media reported.

TEHRAN, Sept. 27 (Xinhua) — Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said on Saturday that the United States is the main obstacle to restoring the 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), as UN sanctions lifted under the nuclear deal were reimposed later in the day.

Speaking at Tehran airport after returning from the UN General Assembly in New York, M. Pezeshkian noted that during his visit to the UN, France, Great Britain, and Germany, which initiated the snapback mechanism, were informed of Iran's readiness to cooperate with the International Atomic Energy Agency.

"The United States always tries to prevent an agreement by coming up with new pretexts," the president said. "In reality, the United States cannot tolerate a strong Iran and wants to weaken our country."

Last month, three European powers triggered the JCPOA's automatic reimposition of UN sanctions, reinstating sanctions previously lifted in exchange for curbs on Tehran's nuclear program.

On the eve of the restrictive measures coming into effect, Iran recalled its ambassadors from the capitals of France, the UK, and Germany. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi declared on Saturday that this mechanism was "illegal, invalid, and of no effect," blaming the crisis on "US betrayal and European inaction."

"The US betrayed diplomacy. The Europeans buried it," he emphasized.

The JCPOA, signed in 2015 by Iran and six world powers, came under pressure after Washington's unilateral withdrawal in 2018, prompting Tehran to gradually scale back its commitments.
