Minsk, September 28 (Xinhua) — In a world where Western policies have generated numerous negative trends over the past quarter century, it's entirely fitting that Chinese President Xi Jinping's initiative on global governance has emerged, a timely initiative Belarus fully supports. This was stated by Belarusian Foreign Minister Maxim Ryzhenkov during his speech at the plenary session of the 80th session of the UN General Assembly in New York. M. Ryzhenkov noted that over the past quarter century, Western policies have generated numerous wars, chaos, and millions of refugees, created barriers to international trade, undermined global food security, and entrenched poverty, hunger, and inequality. Meanwhile, international organizations, primarily the UN and the World Trade Organization, have been sidelined.
According to him, this is precisely why, as a reaction to these negative trends, the idea of regionalization is becoming popular, and cooperation mechanisms not associated with Western countries are growing and strengthening, such as BRICS, the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), the Commonwealth of Independent States, the Eurasian Economic Union, the League of Arab States, and the African Union.
"These structures reflect the interests of the global majority countries and operate on the principles of mutual respect, equality, and consensus, not domination and plunder. They essentially form a fair, multipolar economic development architecture. And it's entirely logical that Chinese President Xi Jinping's very timely initiative on global governance, which Belarus fully supports, has emerged," Ryzhenkov emphasized.
During his speech, the Belarusian Foreign Minister noted that the theme of this year's general political debate is dedicated to the UN anniversary—"Working Together: 80 Years of Joint Work for Peace, Development, and Human Rights, and the Way Forward." In this regard, he suggested recalling the events of 80 years ago. "Eight decades ago, a bloody and merciless war ended, a huge tragedy for all of humanity. And only at the cost of millions of lives and broken destinies did we overcome this challenge," the Belarusian diplomat stated.
At the same time, as M. Ryzhenkov pointed out, only 80 years of peaceful life have passed in Europe, and the West has developed its own "truth" about the events of those years. "Memory is being erased, monuments are being torn down, history textbooks are being rewritten. Once again, we hear Nazi slogans and slogans on the streets of certain European cities," he noted.
The Belarusian Foreign Minister emphasized that if history is being rewritten, then its results are also being rewritten, and the validity of the post-war world order, based on the universal principles of the UN, is being called into question. "And today we cannot remain silent about this. We remember the hundreds of villages burned by the Nazis along with their inhabitants, we remember the millions of Belarusians torn to pieces and mutilated, and the hundreds of thousands of women and children driven into European slavery. Therefore, we understand that preserving memory is important to prevent history from repeating itself," concluded M. Ryzhenkov.
