THE HAGUE, November 25 (Xinhua) — China called on all member states of the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) to promote genuine multilateralism and strengthen solidarity and cooperation.

"In recent years, under the influence of geopolitics, the OPCW has seen a growing trend of politicization and division, which has threatened the tradition of consensus-based decision-making," said Wang Daxue, head of the Chinese delegation and deputy director-general of the Arms Control Department of the Chinese Foreign Ministry, at a side event organized by the Chinese delegation to the 30th session of the Conference of the States Parties to the Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC), which opened on Monday in The Hague.

"Constructive dialogue and communication between member states is declining, and voting is increasingly necessary," a senior Chinese diplomat noted.

In the position paper, China proposed four initiatives, including adhering to the objectives and purposes of the CWC, supporting multilateralism, protecting the legitimate rights and interests of developing countries, and strengthening solidarity and coordination.

"China calls for maintaining the technical characteristics of the OPCW and avoiding politicization of its work," said Liu Xiaodong, China's Deputy Permanent Representative to the OPCW.

Representatives from Brazil, Uganda, Venezuela, Russia, Qatar, Mongolia and other countries supported the initiatives put forward by China.

"The OPCW must continue to make decisions based on consensus. But at the same time, the disagreements we face globally have led us to a different reality. Reaching consensus under these circumstances is not easy," Mirjam Blaak Sow, Uganda's Permanent Representative to the OPCW, told the gathering. –0–

BEIJING, Nov. 25 (Xinhua) — Chinese authorities on Tuesday cut retail prices of gasoline and diesel fuel in response to recent changes in global oil prices.

According to the National Development and Reform Commission of China, retail prices of the above-mentioned petroleum products were adjusted by 70 yuan (US$9.88) and 65 yuan per ton, respectively, from Tuesday.

China's three largest oil companies – PetroChina, Sinopec and CNOOC – as well as other oil refineries in the country were ordered to effectively organize the production and transportation of petroleum products, ensure their stable supply and strictly adhere to the state pricing policy.

Under China's pricing mechanism, petroleum product prices are adjusted in response to fluctuations in global crude oil prices.

SEOUL, November 24 (Xinhua) — President of the Republic of Korea (ROK) Lee Jae-myung emphasized the need to establish dialogue with the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK), declaring the situation on the Korean Peninsula extremely dangerous, the Renhap News Agency reported.

“The peninsula is in a very dangerous situation where accidental clashes could occur at any time,” Lee Jae-myung said during a press conference on November 23 aboard a plane flying from Johannesburg to Ankara as part of his four-nation tour of Africa and the Middle East.

The President emphasized that Seoul must patiently continue its efforts to resume dialogue with the DPRK. He also noted that relations between the two countries have become extremely hostile and confrontational, lacking even basic trust.

According to the South Korean leader, with all communication channels cut off, there is no way to resolve potential conflicts.

When asked whether South Korea might consider scaling down joint military exercises with the United States to encourage dialogue with North Korea, Lee Jae-myung said it would be preferable not to hold the exercises if a lasting peace regime is established between the two Koreas.

Beijing, November 24 (Xinhua) — China and the United States should maintain the positive momentum of bilateral relations and stay on the right course, guided by the principles of equality, respect, and mutual benefit, Chinese President Xi Jinping said on Monday.

Xi Jinping made the statement during a telephone conversation with US President Donald Trump.

The Chinese President recalled that the leaders of the two countries held a successful meeting in Busan, South Korea, last month, reaching many important agreements.

As the Chinese leader noted, this meeting allowed for a course correction on the gigantic ship of Chinese-American relations and gave impetus to its confident movement forward, sending a positive signal to the entire world.

According to Xi Jinping, since the meeting in Busan, relations between China and the United States have generally remained stable and shown positive dynamics, which is widely welcomed by both countries and the international community.

Facts once again prove that the principle of "cooperation brings mutual benefit, while confrontation brings mutual harm" is a proven truth in relation to China-US relations, the Chinese President stated, adding that mutual success and common prosperity between China and the US are becoming a visible and tangible reality.

He called on the two sides to expand cooperation and narrow the list of problems, achieve greater progress, and open up new space for cooperation in China-US relations for the benefit of the peoples of the two countries and the entire world.

Xi Jinping also clarified China's principled position on Taiwan, emphasizing that Taiwan's return to China is an important integral part of the post-war international order.

Recalling that China and the United States once fought shoulder to shoulder against fascism and militarism, the Chinese leader pointed out that at present both countries should even more so jointly defend the results of the Victory in World War II. –0–

China calls on Japan to clarify its so-called consistent position on Taiwan – Chinese Foreign Ministry /detailed version-2/

Beijing, November 24 (Xinhua) — China calls on Japan to clarify its so-called consistent position on the Taiwan issue, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said Monday. She emphasized that if Japan merely vaguely reiterates its unchanging position while constantly crossing red lines in its actions, such repetition is nothing more than empty words that erode and undermine the one-China principle.

Mao Ning made the announcement at a daily press briefing. Earlier at the G20 summit, Japan dismissed China's claim that Japan had changed its position on the Taiwan issue as baseless, asserting that Japan had repeatedly explained to China the meaning of Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi's remarks, as well as its consistent position.

China has repeatedly stated its position on Sanae Takaichi's erroneous remarks about Taiwan, Mao Ning noted, adding that the Japanese prime minister's words seriously contradict the spirit of the four Sino-Japanese political documents and fundamentally undermine the political foundation of Sino-Japanese relations.

According to a Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson, the Chinese side has noted Japan's recent statements regarding its "unchanged position" on the Taiwan issue. "However, what exactly is Japan's so-called unchangeable position? Can Japan fully and publicly articulate this 'unchanged position'? If Japan merely repeats that its position has not changed, without clarifying the specific content of this position and, at the same time, continually crosses red lines in its actions, then such statements will remain empty words that blur and emasculate the one-China principle," the Chinese diplomat emphasized.

Recalling that the one-China principle is an unshakable universal consensus of the international community, Mao Ning pointed out that if the Japanese government's position on the Taiwan question has truly not changed, Japan must unambiguously adhere to the one-China principle and firmly abide by the spirit of the Four Sino-Japanese Political Documents and the commitments Japan has undertaken. Specifically, this refers to the provisions of the 1972 Sino-Japanese Joint Statement that "the Japanese government recognizes the government of the People's Republic of China as the sole legitimate government of China" and "the government of the People's Republic of China reaffirms that Taiwan is an inalienable part of the territory of the People's Republic of China. The Japanese government fully understands and respects this position of the Chinese government and firmly adheres to its position in accordance with Article 8 of the Potsdam Declaration." "Why can't Japan fully and accurately reaffirm this position?" Mao Ning asked.

The Chinese side calls on the Japanese side to take China's demands seriously, truly reconsider and correct its mistakes, translate its promises to China into real actions, not persist in delusions, and ensure that words match deeds, the official representative of the Chinese Foreign Ministry concluded.

GUANGZHOU, November 24 (Xinhua) — A fatal accident in southern China's Guangdong Province was caused by poor safety procedures during tunnel construction in a high-risk area and a failure to reinforce the tunnel in a timely manner after the initial collapse, according to an investigation report released Monday.

On December 4, 2024, 13 workers were killed in a landslide at the Shenzhen-Jiangmen Railway construction site in Shenzhen.

An investigative team dispatched to the site by provincial authorities determined that during tunneling in a high-risk zone, the surrounding rock proved weaker than estimated during design and survey work. However, tunneling was not stopped, and the tunneling and support technologies were not replaced with more reliable ones, which ultimately led to a localized collapse of the roof above the face.

Following the occurrence of a hazardous situation, failure to take timely and effective engineering measures resulted in repeated collapses and a ground failure above the face, resulting in the death of workers on the surface.

This accident exposed problems related to poor management, weak risk control during construction, inadequate emergency response mechanisms and improper handling of the emergency on site.

The incident resulted in direct economic losses of approximately 72.6 million yuan (approximately 10 million US dollars). The tunnel construction companies have been advised to hold those responsible accountable in accordance with the law.
