Athens, Oct. 2 (Xinhua) — European countries on Wednesday called on Israel to ensure the safety of its citizens on board the Sumud flotilla of humanitarian aid ships heading to Gaza that were intercepted by the Jewish state earlier in the day.

The flotilla, which includes 50 vessels and more than 500 volunteers from over 40 countries, intends to break Israel's naval blockade of the Gaza Strip and deliver food and medical aid to Palestinians.

Israel's Foreign Ministry confirmed on Wednesday that it had "detained several vessels in the flotilla" and that the process was "safe" and that "passengers were transported to an Israeli port."

Portuguese authorities have confirmed that three Portuguese nationals, including a member of parliament, have been detained.

Portuguese President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa promised to provide the detainees with “full consular support” through the country’s embassy in Tel Aviv to ensure their rights and safe return.

Italian Defense Minister Guido Crosetto condemned the interception of the flotilla because the vessels were carrying Italian citizens. He added that he had authorized the "immediate intervention" of the country's naval unit, which is dispatched to the area to conduct possible rescue operations.

France and Spain also expressed concern, calling on Israel to ensure the safety of its citizens, guarantee their right to consular protection and allow them to quickly return home.

On Wednesday evening, the flotilla condemned the "active aggression" of the Israeli military in a Telegram post, noting that the Florida was "deliberately rammed at sea" and that the Yulara, Meteque and others were fired upon with water cannons.

Although no crew members were harmed, “these unlawful attacks on unarmed humanitarian vessels constitute a war crime,” the statement said. –0–

Brussels, Oct. 2 (Xinhua) — International experts have celebrated China's achievements in hydrogen energy at the European Hydrogen Week 2025 in Brussels, highlighting the country's active technology adoption and developed industrial ecosystem.

Erwin Penforni, Vice President of Global Hydrogen at Air Liquide, stated that China is effectively implementing a phased approach to using hydrogen in passenger cars. This approach has allowed the country to test new technologies, stimulate sufficient competition, and ultimately develop the most efficient solutions for hydrogen production and use.

“China has world-class electrolyzers, a key component for hydrogen production, which are highly competitive with their European counterparts,” said Khaled Najib, CEO of Egypt Hydrogen, adding that Egypt is actively cooperating with Chinese manufacturers due to their reputation for high quality and reasonable prices.

As Willem-Jeroen Stevens, managing partner of the Dutch financial company Clear, noted, hydrogen energy development in China is being built on the industrial "valley" model, which means creating an entire production chain within a single city or region. This reduces costs and increases the efficiency of research and production.

Nanning, Oct. 2 (Xinhua) — The total number of standard container units (TEUs) transported by trains on multimodal rail-sea transport along the New International Land-Sea Trade Corridor in western China reached 1.09 million in the first three quarters of 2025, up 70.3 percent year-on-year, according to data from the Nanning branch of state-owned China Railway Group.

"This year has seen the fastest growth in freight volume since the launch of the multimodal rail-sea trade corridor, with the one million TEU milestone reached in just 247 days," said Zhao Jian, an official with China Railway Nanning Group, adding that given the current growth trend, the cumulative number of TEU shipments could exceed 1.3 million units for the entire year.

As of the end of August this year, the range of goods transported along this corridor had expanded to 1,316 categories, covering dozens of major types, including electronics, vehicles and auto parts, mechanical equipment, and food products, which contributed to the creation of new growth drivers for the high-quality development of the country's western region.

“Since the beginning of this year, electric vehicles produced by factories in Chongqing and Chengdu have been exported mainly through this trade corridor,” Zhao Jian noted.

This trade corridor, whose operations center is located in the southwestern city of Chongqing, connects global ports via railways, sea routes, and highways through southern Chinese regions such as the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region and Yunnan Province. Cargo transportation within the corridor now covers 75 cities across the country, as well as 577 ports in 127 countries and regions worldwide.

HEFEI, Oct. 2 (Xinhua) — The Burning Plasma Experimental Superconducting Tokamak (BEST), a compact fusion experimental device under construction in Hefei, east China's Anhui Province, has reached a major milestone with the successful installation of its first key component, the Dewar base, marking progress toward the world's first fusion-powered electricity generation.

Fusion energy is often called the ideal "ultimate energy source." Its generation is based on replicating the nuclear fusion process that powers the sun. Unlike previous experimental fusion devices, BEST is designed to demonstrate the actual "burning" of deuterium-tritium plasma. Since full-scale assembly began in May of this year, the facility has attracted significant public attention.

At the bottom of BEST is a Dewar base, which functions as a giant high-vacuum thermos. It insulates the superconducting magnets, which must operate at minus 269 degrees Celsius, allowing them to contain plasma heated to over 100 million degrees Celsius.

Huang Xiongyi, a junior researcher at the Institute of Plasma Physics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, said on Wednesday that the Dewar base serves as the base of BEST and will eventually support the entire equipment system, which weighs more than 6,000 tons.

The Dewar base, weighing over 400 tons, with a diameter of approximately 18 meters and a height of 5 meters, is not only the heaviest single component of the BEST main machine, but also the largest vacuum component ever produced in China's fusion research field.

According to Huang Xiongyi, the development of the Dewar base involved a number of breakthroughs in many advanced technical areas, including high-precision molding and welding, millimeter-scale deformation control, and ultra-high vacuum sealing. These challenges were successfully overcome, enabling millimeter-level precision during installation.

Following the successful installation of this unit, other major components will be supplied to equip the main vehicle, and the BEST is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2027. -0-

SHIJIAZHUANG, Oct. 2 (Xinhua) — At a brand-new venue called the "Oriental Acrobatic City," a group of female acrobats from Russia, dressed in traditional costumes, performed a somersault with a smooth landing using a gymnastics springboard, drawing thunderous applause from the audience.

This competition number is just one of 28 on the program for the 20th China International Wuqiao Circus Festival (CWICF), which is taking place this year from September 28 to October 3 in Wuqiao County, Cangzhou City, Hebei Province, northern China, known as the "birthplace of acrobatics." Acrobats from 19 countries and regions are competing, with the largest number of foreign participants coming from Russia.

Great Moscow Circus acrobat Anastasia Ovcharenko is participating in this festival for the first time. "I'm very excited to come to China for the competition. This is one of the largest acrobatic festivals in the world and an international event of great significance," she said during an interview.

The festival has been held every two years since 1987. Currently, along with the international circus festivals in Monte Carlo and Paris, it is considered one of the most prestigious competitions in the field of circus arts, as well as the oldest event of its kind in China.

In preparation for this festival, Wuqiao County has accelerated infrastructure construction and made every effort to provide good conditions for competition for Chinese and foreign guests.

"There's excellent infrastructure here, special schools, and it's very convenient to train. The overall organization resembles a miniature version of the Olympic Games," said A. Ovcharenko, adding that over the past year, her team has been meticulously preparing for the Wuqiao Acrobatic Festival, practicing complex techniques.

“We worked hard for this, and our goal is to receive the highest award,” the Russian noted.

This year's festival awards package consists of 15 prizes, including three Golden Lions, five Silver Lions, and seven Bronze Lions.

For 36-year-old Russian acrobat Viktor Roshchin, participating in the Wuqiao Festival means more than just competing for awards. "There's no doubt that every acrobat wants to win an award, but first and foremost, we hope to delight the audience, have a good time with them, and share our enthusiasm," the Russian shared.

In his view, CWICF brings together the world's best acrobats, who, through exchange and communication, cultivate genuine friendships. "I've met many friends in the world of acrobatics here; we communicate freely and better understand each other's performances," he added.

In addition to preparing for competitions, V. Roshchin also takes walks through the local area to immerse himself in the glamour of traditional Chinese acrobatics. At the Wuqiao Acrobatic World scenic area, he watched local acrobatic performers perform folk culture. He told reporters, "Chinese acrobatics is very interesting, and Chinese performers can perform many tricks we didn't expect."

The young man was deeply impressed by what he saw and heard in Wuqiao County. V. Roshchin believes that performing acrobatic stunts is like "cutting a diamond," and that one must constantly learn and share experiences to hone one's skills and mastery.

Tatyana Zapashnaya, a jury member from Russia, also expressed her admiration for the Wuqiao Circus Arts Festival: “In addition to professional acrobats, many children also participate in events related to the Wuqiao Festival, and I am touched by this continuity of acrobatic art.”

"I will evaluate the contestants' performances based on technical complexity and artistic presentation," said T. Zapashnaya, expressing hope that the acrobats will perform at their best and give the audience a stunning audiovisual feast. -0-

WASHINGTON, Oct. 1 (Xinhua) — The U.S. Senate on Wednesday failed to approve a short-term spending bill, triggering the first federal government shutdown in nearly seven years.

The Senate voted on two bills that failed to pass Tuesday night, one from Democrats and one from Republicans.

Health benefits remain a key sticking point in the latest negotiations, with Democrats advocating for increased health care funding and Republicans accusing them of seeking to provide free health care to illegal immigrants.

"Democratic senators are blocking the government and holding the economy hostage because they want to restore these benefits for illegal immigrants," Vice President J.D. Vance said in an interview with Fox News on Wednesday.

However, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, on the social media platform X, accused Republicans of the government shutdown and their "unwillingness to protect Americans' healthcare." He claimed that "not a single federal dollar is going toward providing health insurance to illegal immigrants."

Federal employees deemed essential must continue to report to work, although they will not receive pay until the government reopens. Hundreds of thousands of other employees will be furloughed. Some government services will be suspended or delayed, which will also impact the release of economic data.

"A government shutdown doesn't save money, it spends it," said Maya McGinnis, chair of the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget.

Vienna, October 2 (Xinhua) — Power outages occurred at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant (ChNPP) in Ukraine on Wednesday morning due to a technical malfunction, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) reported on social media.

The plant lost connection to the 330 kW transmission line from its substation in Slavutych. Thanks to a rapid switchover to backup lines, power was restored, with the exception of the New Safe Confinement (NSC).

According to the IAEA, the NSC is currently powered by two emergency diesel generators. The NSC is enclosed by the old sarcophagus built after the Chernobyl accident in 1986.

On April 26, 1986, one of the worst nuclear accidents in history occurred at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant. A series of explosions rocked Unit 4, causing radiation to spread across Ukraine and other European countries.

UN, October 1 /Xinhua/ — While the Gaza peace proposal remains under consideration, fighting continues, with Israel carrying out deadly airstrikes and Palestinians launching rockets into the Jewish state, the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) reported on Wednesday.

Dozens of people have been killed or wounded in recent attacks in Gaza, the agency said.

Published reports say sirens have sounded in Israeli towns near Gaza.

OCHA, citing Gaza health authorities, reported that the death toll since the war began in October 2023 has exceeded 66,000 people.

"OCHA reiterates that civilians must never be targeted," the agency stated. "Under international humanitarian law, they must be protected."

The agency noted that health authorities also reported that 177 people, including 36 children, have died from hunger and malnutrition since the famine in Gaza was confirmed in August.

According to the United Nations Population Fund, more than 60 percent of pregnant women and new mothers suffer from malnutrition.

According to OCHA, humanitarian organizations continue to call for unimpeded and sustained access to and within Gaza to deliver critical supplies and services sufficient to meet the needs of the population.

UNICEF warned that displaced children have been living in fear and terror for several days, amid bombing and shelling and without access to food and water.
