Beijing, October 6 (Xinhua) — The Chinese government plans to hire 7,000 retired teachers this year to teach in compulsory education schools in rural areas, according to a statement jointly released by the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Finance.

This teacher recruitment program is part of an action plan launched by the government in 2018 to improve the quality of education in rural areas by attracting retired teachers to schools in rural areas of the country.

XINING, Oct. 6 (Xinhua) — As of 8 a.m. Monday, 137 tourists who were previously trapped by incessant snowfall in northwest China's Qinghai Province had been evacuated and were in stable condition, local authorities said.

During the National Day and Mid-Autumn Festival holidays in China, which began on October 1, more than 100 hikers traveled to Laohugou, Menyuan Hui Autonomous County, Haibei Tibet Autonomous Prefecture. On Sunday, a 41-year-old hiker died from hypothermia and acute mountain sickness.

NEW DELHI, Oct. 6 (Xinhua) — At least 24 people have been killed and scores injured after incessant rains triggered landslides in India's eastern West Bengal state, authorities said on Monday.

Landslides struck the picturesque town of Darjeeling, located approximately 626 kilometers north of the state capital, Kolkata. Mudflows swept away homes, blocked roads, and isolated villages.

The tragedy caused widespread destruction and left hundreds of people, mostly tourists, stranded in the Himalayan foothills.

Communication networks were also damaged.

According to authorities, heavy rainfall in Darjeeling on Sunday night triggered landslides in several areas. Police and rescue services have launched rescue operations.

Authorities have closed popular tourist spots in Darjeeling to prevent accidents and urged locals and tourists to exercise caution and monitor road and weather conditions.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee held an emergency meeting on Sunday evening and announced that she would personally visit the affected areas on Monday.
