BEIJING, March 21 (Xinhua) — China's first 550-MW F-class gas turbine unit has successfully completed a 168-hour full-load test and officially entered service, marking a new breakthrough in the application of high-efficiency, large-capacity clean energy equipment, China Huadian Corporation Ltd. announced on Saturday.

This unit is part of the corporation's gas power project located in the Tongnan district of Chongqing, southwest China. The project's total installed capacity is approximately 1.1 million kW, making it the largest single-unit F-class gas turbine unit with the highest efficiency in the country.

Once fully operational, the project is expected to generate approximately 2.1 billion kWh of electricity annually, enough to meet the annual electricity needs of approximately 1.75 million households. It will also save approximately 200,000 tons of fuel equivalent and reduce carbon dioxide emissions by approximately 860,000 tons per year, while reducing sulfur dioxide and particulate matter emissions to near zero.

According to the corporation, electricity generated from natural gas serves as a supporting, regulatory, and integral energy source for the construction of a new type of energy system. Gas-fired power units not only replace coal-fired power plants but also play a crucial role in providing a powerful, efficient, and environmentally friendly backup power supply.

Compared to coal-fired power units, gas turbine units offer significantly lower emissions, greater flexibility, and higher efficiency. They can reach full power in approximately one hour, which is approximately five times faster than traditional coal-fired units.

Tehran, March 21 (Xinhua) — Iran fired two ballistic missiles at the US-British military base in Diego Garcia in the Indian Ocean, the semi-official Mehr news agency reported on Saturday.

The Wall Street Journal and CNN reported on Friday that Iran fired ballistic missiles at a base on Diego Garcia, an island in the Chagos Archipelago, but they missed their target.

Britain on Friday agreed to the US use of the Diego Garcia air base to strike Iranian missile launchers used to attack ships in the Strait of Hormuz, British media reported.

The decision came after US President Donald Trump expressed disappointment with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer for not allowing US troops to use a military base to launch strikes on Iran.

Astana, March 21 (Xinhua) — Horse meat consumption in Kazakhstan reached a record high in 2025, Kazinform reported on Saturday, citing the DATA HUB Telegram channel.

In Q4 2025, per capita consumption was 2.35 kg, the highest level for any quarter in at least 15 years, an increase of 10.7 percent year-on-year.

By the end of the year, horse meat consumption reached 7.63 kg per person, also setting a new record, while total meat consumption was 84.4 kg.

The share of horse meat in the meat diet has risen to a record 9 percent, while consumption of beef, lamb, and pork has declined, the report says.

Shifts in consumption patterns are partly explained by higher rates of price growth for beef and lamb compared to horse meat and poultry. –0–

NEW YORK, March 21 (Xinhua) — The U.S. Treasury Department on Friday issued a general license temporarily lifting sanctions on Iranian oil at sea for 30 days to ease supply shortages amid shipping disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz.

A general license issued by the U.S. Treasury Department's Office of Foreign Assets Control authorizes the delivery and sale of Iranian-origin crude oil and petroleum products loaded onto tankers as of March 20.

Operations to ensure the safe mooring and berthing of the relevant tankers, to ensure the health and safety of crews, to carry out emergency repairs and to protect the environment, as well as other related operations, are also permitted.

Notably, this license allows the import of crude oil and petroleum products of Iranian origin into the United States.

"This temporary, short-term authorization applies only to oil already in transit and does not involve new purchases or production," US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent wrote on Friday on social media.

He said it would be difficult for Iran to access any proceeds from these transactions, and the United States would continue to exert maximum pressure on Iran and limit its ability to access the international financial system.

Chengdu, March 21 (Xinhua) — French pharmaceutical giant Sanofi recently officially opened an innovation and operations center in Chengdu, southwest China's Sichuan Province, marking the company's first such facility in China and signaling its expanding presence in the country.

The decision to establish the center in Chengdu reflects the company's commitment to always be at the forefront of global innovation, said Madeleine Roach, executive vice president of business operations at Sanofi.

According to her, Chengdu's significant position in the biopharmaceutical industry, its rich talent pool, and its vibrant innovation ecosystem make it an ideal location to expand Sanofi's capabilities and deepen its presence in China. She is convinced that this development will benefit both patients and the company's partners.

The new center's activities will cover a wide range of activities, from R&D and clinical trials to supply chain management services, and it is planned to create more than 600 professional positions by the end of 2026.

According to the company, the Chengdu center has already established cooperation with Sanofi's operational centers in countries such as India, Hungary, Malaysia, Colombia, and Spain, forming an efficient, interconnected global network.

Paris-headquartered Sanofi first entered the Chinese market in 1982, opening a local office. Since then, the company has steadily expanded its innovation and research activities in China. It currently has several manufacturing and R&D centers in China, including four R&D centers in Shanghai, Beijing, Chengdu, and Suzhou.

In 2025, the company began construction of a new insulin active pharmaceutical ingredient production base in Beijing with a total investment of €1 billion (approximately $1.16 billion). -0-

Budapest, March 21 (Xinhua) — Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban on Friday defended his decision to maintain his veto on a large loan to Ukraine, directly linking it to ongoing disruptions in oil supplies through the Druzhba pipeline.

Speaking at a press conference in Brussels following the first day of the European Council summit, V. Orbán confirmed that Hungary refuses to approve the final formal stage of the European Union's (EU) €90 billion (US$103 billion) financial aid package for Ukraine as long as the "oil blockade" remains in place.

"No oil, no money," Orbán declared. Despite significant pressure from other EU leaders, Hungary's position remains unchanged, he emphasized.

The proposed loan is a "bad strategic decision," he said, noting that while the pipeline is technically operational, the current transit disruptions are "political in nature."

Orbán also suggested that other EU members could circumvent the collective mechanism and provide support to Ukraine on a bilateral basis. He criticized the existing EU system for concealing the source of funds.

WASHINGTON, March 20 (Xinhua) — US President Donald Trump said on Friday that the United States is "very close" to achieving its goals in military strikes on Iran.

As he wrote on the social network Truth Social, the country is considering curtailing military attacks in the Middle East against Iran.

He also noted that the Strait of Hormuz should, if necessary, be protected and monitored by other countries that use it.

"The Strait of Hormuz should be protected and controlled by other nations that use it, if necessary—the United States does not! If asked, we will assist those nations in ensuring security in the Strait of Hormuz, but this should not be necessary once the threat from Iran is eliminated," Trump said.

Moscow, March 21 (Xinhua) – The leadership in Brussels is plunging Europe into darkness and crisis. This is how Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova commented on the European Commission's position on Russian gas purchases on Friday.

"It now seems perfectly logical that the EU is plunging into darkness, in the truest sense of the word. It's not a technical disaster or some natural cataclysm that is causing the global crisis in the European Union, but the decisions of its own leaders, who simply flip the switch," she wrote on her Telegram channel.

M. Zakharova noted that this isn't a matter of personal choice for EC leaders, but of drawing entire countries into darkness. She recalled the words of poet Marina Tsvetaeva: "The sin is not in the darkness, but in the refusal to see the light," and also quoted the Hungarian proverb: "In the dark, all cows are black."

Earlier, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen stated that Europe does not intend to revise the deadline for phasing out Russian LNG even if an energy shortage arises. –0–
