Moscow, October 7 (Xinhua) — China supports strengthening the World Trade Organization (WTO) and protecting the multilateral trading system. This was stated by Chinese Ambassador to Russia Zhang Hanhui in an article recently published in the Russian newspaper Trud. The publication follows China's decision not to seek new special and differential treatment in current and future WTO negotiations, which was announced in September at the 80th session of the UN General Assembly.
"China firmly shoulders its responsibilities by fully defending the multilateral trading system," the article said.
Zhang Hanhui recalled that China, having joined the WTO in 2001 as a developing country, enjoys special and differential treatment, actively participates in multilateral trade negotiations, and makes a significant contribution to promoting the liberalization and facilitation of global trade. "China always remembers the original goals of its WTO accession and firmly fulfills its commitment to openness," the diplomat added.
He assessed that the rules-based multilateral trading system is currently facing increasingly serious problems such as hegemonism, unilateralism, and protectionism. "Moreover, individual countries are unleashing trade and tariff wars, which are seriously damaging the legitimate interests of WTO members, seriously undermining the global economic and trade order, and creating uncertainty and instability for global economic development," the ambassador emphasized, noting that the international community is increasingly advocating for the preservation of the multilateral trading system and calling on the WTO to play a more active role in this process.
Zhang Hanhui noted that, in this context, China's decision demonstrates its firm support for the multilateral trading system and its responsibility as a global power. "This decision will give new impetus to the liberalization and facilitation of global trade and investment, and will inject positive energy into the process of reforming the global economic governance system," he asserted.
As the ambassador pointed out, China consistently adheres to the principles of multilateralism and actively works to create a just and equitable world order. China has always been and remains part of the Global South and will firmly stand shoulder to shoulder with other developing WTO members, narrowing the development gap between North and South and placing development at the center of the WTO reform process.
"China will steadily promote the construction of an open global economy, work with Russia and other countries within the WTO to make greater positive contributions to global prosperity, inclusiveness, and development, and work hand in hand with all countries to create a better future," Zhang Hanhui concluded.
