When people think of bronzes from the Shang (1600–1046 BCE) and Zhou (1046–221 BCE) periods, they often conjure up images of blue-green. On September 27, at the 2025 Sanxingdui Forum held in Deyang, Sichuan Province, the Sichuan Provincial Institute of Cultural Relics and Archaeology unveiled the results of a new study revealing a large number of painted bronzes discovered at Sanxingdui. This not only reveals a more colorful Sanxingdui but also pushes back the origins of Chinese painted bronze by nearly a thousand years.
