Boao, Hainan Province, March 24 (Xinhua) — The foundations of trade integration in Asia continue to strengthen, according to a report released on the sidelines of the Boao Forum for Asia (BOA) on Tuesday.

Intra-regional trade dependence increased from 56.3 percent in 2023 to 57.2 percent in 2024 as the region's largest economies increasingly focus their trade ties on each other, according to the Annual Report on Prospects and Progress of Asian Economic Integration 2026.

The report also notes that bilateral trade among major economies in the Asia-Pacific region is generally gaining momentum, with intra-ASEAN trade recovering and ASEAN-China bilateral trade ranking first.

Moreover, China's exports to emerging economies are growing faster than those to Japan and the Republic of Korea, strengthening its role as a regional hub based on market size and reliable supplies of intermediate goods.

According to the report, China's relations with these partners are evolving from those of traditional "trading partners" to those of a "community of shared destiny," characterized by the close intertwining of production and value chains.

Thanks to growing investment in digital infrastructure, the advantage of demand in vast Asian markets, and deepening regional economic integration, the region is gradually transforming from a participant in international services trade into one of the main drivers of its growth, the report predicts. -0-

Beijing, March 24 (Xinhua) — From March 18 to 22, a cultural exchange event for senior citizens from China and Russia was held in Harbin, capital of Heilongjiang Province in northeast China, according to Partners magazine.

During the event, the Russian delegation visited several facilities in Harbin, including the health center on Taiyangdao Island (Sun Island) and the Harbin Ankang International Senior Center, to learn about the organization of social services for the elderly. The parties engaged in an in-depth exchange of experiences on health service models and the organization of cultural and leisure activities for senior citizens.

At the master class, the Chinese participants demonstrated traditional arts and crafts, such as paper cutting (jianzhi), calligraphy, and the traditional Chinese breathing exercise "Baduanjin." The Russian delegation, in turn, brought traditional handicrafts and conducted a short on-site training course for their Chinese friends.

The cultural performance was the highlight of the event. Around 160 participants from both countries presented dance and song routines and held a fashion show.

Washington, March 24 (Xinhua) — The U.S. Senate on Monday confirmed Senator Markwayne Mullin as the new head of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). He will replace Kristi Noem, who resigned amid the ongoing departmental shutdown.

The Senate voted 54-45 to confirm the nomination of 48-year-old Michael Mullin. He has served in the Senate since 2023, having previously represented Oklahoma in the House of Representatives for 10 years.

On March 5, US President Donald Trump announced Mullin's nomination amid growing bipartisan dissatisfaction with Noem's performance. This is the first Cabinet change of Trump's second term.

Noem has come under bipartisan pressure since federal law enforcement fatally shot two U.S. citizens in Minneapolis in January. She further angered the president with her performance during a congressional hearing earlier this month, when senators from both parties grilled her, particularly about her $200 million advertising campaign.

Following the deaths of two Americans, Renee Goode and Alex Pretty, in January after being shot by federal agents in Minneapolis, Democrats are pushing for changes to the way immigration enforcement works.

Disagreements over immigration enforcement rules led to a deadlock in Congress as Democrats demanded that DHS funding be removed from the overall funding package, leading to a partial shutdown from January 31 to February 3. –0–

NEW YORK, March 24 (Xinhua) — A massive plume of smoke rose over Port Arthur, Texas, on Monday evening after a powerful explosion at a local oil refinery, local media reported.

Witnesses reported hearing a loud explosion that shook car windows. One resident at the scene noted the smell of rotten eggs in the area.

Port Arthur Fire Department spokesman Antonio Mitchell said the incident occurred at a Valero facility, but details were scarce at the time.

Jefferson County Sheriff Zena Stevens said the explosion was possibly related to a heating device. Authorities are monitoring air quality in the area.

Port Arthur police and fire officials advised nearby residents to stay indoors, but no evacuations were issued. The Texas Department of Transportation also urged drivers to avoid the area.

There have been no reports of casualties yet, the statement said. –0–

Washington, March 24 (Xinhua) — The Pentagon is considering sending airborne troops to support military operations in Iran, The New York Times reported on Monday, citing senior defense officials.

The deployment of a rapid reaction force of approximately 3,000 soldiers from the 82nd Airborne Division, capable of deploying anywhere in the world within 18 hours, is being considered, the statement said. It noted that neither the Pentagon nor US Central Command (CENTCOM) has issued any such orders yet.

These forces may reportedly be used to capture Kharg Island, Iran's main oil export hub.

If US President Donald Trump authorizes the seizure of the island by American troops, another option is being considered: an attack by 2,500 Marines from the 31st Expeditionary Unit, which is heading to the Middle East, the New York Times reports, citing unnamed officials.

CENTCOM reported on Monday that since the start of the US-Israeli operation against Iran on February 28, the US military has carried out more than 9,000 strikes on the Islamic Republic, including damaging or sinking more than 140 Iranian naval vessels. The resulting disruption has disrupted global shipping, sent oil prices soaring, and dealt a blow to the global economy.

Cairo, March 24 (Xinhua) — Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and Pakistani Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif held a telephone conversation on Monday. The Iranian president reaffirmed Tehran's commitment to regional cooperation, the Tasnim news agency reported.

M. Pezeshkian stated that Iran was not the initiator of the ongoing conflict with the United States and Israel, and called the defense of Iranian territory a “natural right,” the news agency reports.

He said Tehran remains committed to regional stability, opposes foreign interference and calls on neighboring countries to prevent their territory or facilities from being used to attack Iran, warning that such actions could exacerbate instability.

The Iranian president also stressed that Tehran has taken measures to ensure maritime security and will facilitate the passage of vessels not associated with the "aggressors" through the Strait of Hormuz.

According to Tasneem, Sharif expressed concern over the escalation of the conflict and offered condolences over the numerous casualties. He called for collective efforts, especially by Muslim-majority countries, to ease tensions and restore stability. He noted that Pakistan supports Iran's right to self-defense and reaffirmed Islamabad's support for the Iranian government and people.

Pakistani media outlets separately quoted the prime minister as expressing solidarity with the Iranian people, offering condolences to the families of the victims, and wishing a speedy recovery to the wounded.

Beijing, March 24 (Xinhua) — The National Intellectual Property Administration (NIPA) announced the completion of the first-ever inventory of patent databases of universities and research institutes, which covered over 1.3 million patents.

The audit identified 680,000 patents for inventions that were deemed the most promising in terms of commercialization and were presented to 460,000 companies that expressed interest in bringing these innovations from the laboratory to the market.

The current inventory is part of a three-year special campaign to promote the commercialization of intellectual property (IP), approved by the State Council of the People's Republic of China in 2023. One of its main goals was to review the patent databases of universities and research institutes. Over the past three years, the campaign has facilitated the commercialization of approximately 80,000 patents from more than 2,700 universities and research institutes across the country.

"By the end of 2025, the rate of implementation of patented inventions from universities and research institutes into production reached 10.1 percent and 17.2 percent, respectively, which is significantly higher than the figures before the special campaign began," noted Hu Wenhui, Deputy Head of the State Institute of Information Technologies.

It is noted that the campaign focused primarily on patents for key technologies in future-oriented industries such as quantum technologies, biomanufacturing, brain-computer interfaces, and 6G networks, in order to lay a stronger foundation for the commercialization of high-impact R&D.

A group of small and medium-sized enterprises specializing in complex technologies and holding robust patents also benefited and grew stronger as a result of the campaign. Hu Wenhui noted that companies known as Hangzhou's "Six Little Dragons," including the world-renowned startup Unitree Robotics, are successfully implementing the SME R&D program implemented in Zhejiang Province.

China became the first country to surpass the 5 million mark in the number of valid domestic invention patents. And the country has led the world in international patent applications for six consecutive years. However, the rate of patent implementation in production remains low, especially at universities and research institutions. In 2022, this figure at Chinese universities was only 3.9 percent, leaving many patented technologies unused.

In recent years, the country has stepped up efforts to expand the practice of patent transfer, seeking to turn the results of scientific and technological research into real driving forces for economic and social development. -0-
