LONDON, Jan. 12 (Xinhua) — Britain's online safety regulator Ofcom said Monday it has launched a formal investigation into US entrepreneur Elon Musk's social media platform X under Britain's Online Safety Act over concerns it could be used to create sexualized images of women and children.

Ofcom said in a statement that it was deeply concerned by reports that Grok, an artificial intelligence tool available on the social network X, was used to create and distribute unauthorised intimate images and child sexual abuse material without consent.

The regulator called the Grok case a “top priority” and emphasized that it could block access to X “if necessary.”

If an investigation finds that a social network has violated the law, Ofcom may require it to take specific measures to bring its operations into compliance with the law or to remedy the damage caused by the violations. The regulator also has the right to impose a financial penalty of up to £18 million (US$24.27 million) or 10% of the social network's global legal revenue.

Calling Grok's current situation "the most serious case of ongoing non-compliance," Ofcom warned that it could take legal action to stop advertisers or payment service providers from appearing on X, and require internet service providers to block access to its website in the UK.

The regulator noted, however, that such measures would only be taken “where appropriate and proportionate to prevent serious harm to individuals” in the UK.

Grok, an AI tool offered by social media platform X, is facing growing criticism following reports that it was used to create illegal sexualized content. British Prime Minister Keir Starmer previously stated that the use of Grok to create illegal images is "disgraceful" and "disgusting."

Moscow, January 12 (Xinhua) — On January 9, the Russian Armed Forces struck the Lviv State Aircraft Repair Plant with an Oreshnik missile system, the Russian Ministry of Defense reported on Monday.

"According to information confirmed by several independent sources, the Lviv State Aircraft Repair Plant was disabled as a result of an attack by the Russian Armed Forces using the Oreshnik mobile ground-based missile system on the night of January 9," reads a statement published on the Russian Ministry of Defense's official Telegram channel.

As noted, this facility carried out repairs and maintenance of aircraft for the Ukrainian Armed Forces, including F-16 and MiG-29 aircraft donated by Western countries. "The facility also produced long- and medium-range strike unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) used for strikes against Russian civilian targets deep within Russian territory," the Russian Defense Ministry emphasized, specifying that the strike at Oreshnik hit production facilities, warehouses housing finished products (UAVs), and the infrastructure of the factory airfield.

Furthermore, it was reported that as part of this massive strike, which the Russian Ministry of Defense had previously described as a response to the attack on Russian President Vladimir Putin's residence, the Iskander operational-tactical missile system and sea-based Kalibr cruise missiles in the Ukrainian capital of Kyiv struck the production facilities of two enterprises involved in the assembly of attack UAVs, as well as energy infrastructure facilities supporting the operation of Ukraine's military-industrial complex.

TEHRAN, Jan. 12 (Xinhua) — Tens of thousands of pro-government citizens took to the streets across Iran in response to calls from the Iranian government to show solidarity.

State media are broadcasting footage of huge crowds flocking to Enghelab Square in the capital, Tehran. Participants are chanting slogans such as "Death to America!", "Death to Israel!", and "Death to the enemies of God!"

Similar protests are reportedly taking place in the cities of Kerman, Zahedan, and Birjand, as well as at the funeral procession for security forces killed in the city of Imamshahr in Semnan province. Broadcasters are calling the events a "popular uprising against American-Zionist terrorism."

On January 10, Iran's Islamic Development Coordination Council called on people to demonstrate on the afternoon of January 12 to condemn "the terrorist actions of American and Israeli agents."

Earlier on Monday, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said the situation in the country was "under complete control," condemning American interference.

According to A. Araghchi, the protests were “incited and fueled” by foreign elements, and all those responsible will be “hunted down” by security forces.

The Iranian Foreign Minister announced that Iran had received evidence of US and Israeli involvement in domestic "terrorist activities," including a video showing weapons being distributed to protesters. He added that authorities would soon publish confessions from those detained.

Protests erupted across Iran late last month over the sharp devaluation of the Iranian rial and sweeping reforms to the subsidy system. They soon escalated into nationwide unrest, reportedly accompanied by clashes between police and demonstrators.

According to Iran's semi-official Tasnim news agency, at least 111 Iranian security forces have been killed in unrest over the past two weeks. No official death toll among protesters has been released.

Brussels, January 12 (Xinhua) — The European Union is considering imposing additional sanctions against Iran following the violent suppression of protests in the country, EU Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Spokesman Anwar al-Anuni said on Monday.

"We are shocked by the reports of casualties… We are ready to propose new, tougher sanctions following the violent suppression of protesters," A. al-Anuni said at a press conference.

An EU official said the EU already has a “tailor-made framework” targeting those responsible for serious human rights violations and abuses in Iran, and that a number of entities and individuals have been added to the list over the years.

According to A. al-Anuni, the EU has extended sanctions to Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) related to its development of weapons of mass destruction. This measure includes freezing the IRGC's assets in the EU and prohibiting the provision of financial resources and economic resources to it. Relevant individuals and entities have also been included in the sanctions list.

A. al-Anuni added that the Iranian issue will be discussed at the extraordinary meeting of the EU Foreign Affairs Council scheduled for January 29. The adoption of a new sanctions package will require unanimous approval by member states in the EU Council.

Beijing, January 12 (Xinhua) — The one-China principle is the universal consensus of the international community, the basic norm of international relations, and the political foundation of China-Africa ties, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said on Monday.

Mao Ning made the statement at a regular press briefing in response to a request to comment on the Taiwanese administration's statements on the one-China principle mentioned in the joint press release of the 9th round of the China-African Union (AU) strategic dialogue.

As the Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson pointed out, the joint press release fully and accurately reflects the African side's consistent and clear position on the Taiwan issue.

Mao Ning quoted AU Commission Chairman Mahmoud Ali Yusuf as saying in a recent interview: “We will always be on the Chinese side on the one-China principle.”

The Chinese diplomat recalled that the Beijing Declaration was adopted at the 2024 Beijing Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation. Participating African countries and the AU Commission reaffirmed their firm support for the one-China principle, emphasizing that there is only one China, Taiwan is an inalienable part of Chinese territory, and the government of the People's Republic of China is the sole legitimate government representing all of China. Those present also expressed support for China's efforts to achieve national reunification.

“We urge the Taiwan administration to face reality and stop its self-deprecating and clumsy political show,” Mao Ning emphasized. –0–
