BEIRUT, March 26 (Xinhua) — Lebanon's Hezbollah militant group said on Wednesday it destroyed eight Israeli Merkava tanks in the village of Taybeh in southern Lebanon.

She later reported that she had launched a missile and artillery strike on forces assigned to evacuate damaged tanks and wounded soldiers.

Earlier that day, Hezbollah Secretary General Naim Qassem stated that the group would continue its "defensive struggle" against Israel. He called for national unity and rejected demands to disarm amid ongoing hostilities.

Hezbollah entered the confrontation on March 2, launching rockets from southern Lebanon into Israel for the first time since the ceasefire of November 27, 2024. Israel responded by launching an intensified military campaign targeting several areas of Lebanon.

Many companies with foreign capital believe that the 15th Five-Year Plan presents a clear "list of opportunities" for global investors. Foreign company executives have expressed their willingness to actively pursue these opportunities for further development in the Chinese market.

Jiang Ying, Chairwoman of Deloitte China, noted that the draft program implements long-term strategic goals through practical actions at every stage, ensuring continuity and flexibility. The program includes 109 major projects, a significant increase compared to the 14th Five-Year Plan period; average annual growth in R&D investment will exceed 7%; and a system for cultivating future industry chains is planned. She believes the program provides clear guidance for local governments and businesses, particularly in promoting the deep integration of technological and industrial innovation.

Hu Zhizhi, President of UBS Group in China, noted that the innovative activity of Chinese companies in artificial intelligence, high-tech manufacturing, semiconductors, and new energy sources is changing the way global investors view Chinese assets. The program, aimed at accelerating self-sufficiency in high technology and developing new productive forces, will transform Chinese assets from an "option" to a "strategic choice," providing foreign financial institutions with a historic opportunity to participate in China's high-quality development.

Zhao Mingqi, CEO of GLP China, stated that the plan to strengthen support for computing infrastructure is fully aligned with the company's strategy. GLP has already paved the way for the conversion of logistics parks into data centers and continues to expand investment and operations in AI-enabled data centers in China to better serve industries such as finance and the internet.

Zhu Jianliu, Vice President of Corporate Affairs at Budweiser China, believes that the plan's proposed initiatives to "build a strong domestic market" and "actively stimulate consumption" have strengthened the company's confidence in its intention to deepen its presence in China's consumer market. The company plans to attract global brands like the electronic music festival Tomorrowland to China to create high-quality consumer experiences.

Many foreign financial institutions point out that the 15th Five-Year Plan sends a clear signal of China's expanding openness and a transition to high-quality institutional openness. Zhang Lei, Vice President of Communications for Greater China and Northeast Asia at Bayer Group, noted that from expedited approvals for innovative drugs and support for the biopharmaceutical sector in the revised catalog of encouraged industries for foreign investment to support for platforms like the CIIE, China is creating an arena for multinational companies to innovate through institutional openness. This high-level openness program has strengthened Bayer's confidence in developing in China.

Xia Jun, EY's Managing Partner for Central China, stated that the program's proposed "access and level playing field" directly addresses the key interests of foreign companies, helping to remove various hidden barriers and create a transparent, stable, and predictable institutional environment. This shift from "providing preferential treatment" to "creating mechanisms" is the foundation for strengthening the long-term confidence of foreign capital.

Standard Chartered Group CEO Winters believes innovation and domestic demand are the two top priorities of the program, and that the driving force behind China's economic growth will increasingly come from technology, productivity growth, and more proactive policies to stimulate domestic demand. He described the Chinese economy as "stable, predictable, dynamic, and forward-looking," emphasizing that in the current climate of global uncertainty, "stability is a very good thing."

BEIJING, March 26 (Xinhua) — In springtime, the streets and alleys of Beijing are lined with "999" non-emergency medical transportation and care service vehicles, a symbol of warm concern for the well-being of the people. From hospitals to neighborhoods, from homes to elderly care facilities, this service, focused on the needs of the elderly, provides a targeted response to their pressing problems and difficulties, realizing the "Healthy China" vision outlined at the Fourth Session of the 14th National People's Congress (NPC) and the Fourth Session of the 14th National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) held in March 2026.

Population aging is a key national development issue in China. According to the National Bureau of Statistics, by the end of 2025, the population aged 60 and over in China will exceed 320 million. The government's work report, presented at the March session of the National People's Congress, clearly emphasized the need to further implement the national strategy for actively responding to population aging, expanding the availability of affordable elderly care services, and implementing programs to subsidize consumer spending on care services for the elderly with moderate to severe impairments. This series of measures has identified areas for addressing issues in the elderly care sector and strengthening the foundation for ensuring the well-being of the population. In Beijing, the Red Cross's non-emergency medical transportation and elderly care service, branded "999," is a shining example of how the national strategy is being implemented at the local level through concrete steps aimed at improving the living conditions of the population.

Unlike the 120 emergency service, the 999 service specialises in non-emergency medical transport and care for the elderly, thereby filling a gap in the provision of last-mile care services.

"Previously, to change my mother's urinary catheter, the whole family had to take time off work, bring her downstairs, and call an ambulance—it took half a day, and my mother was in a lot of pain," says Ms. Zhao, a resident of Longquan Community in Beijing's Xicheng District. Her mother, who is in her eighties, has to spend long periods of time in bed due to a fracture. Now, by calling 999, they can get a professional nurse who will come to them within 30 minutes. "There's no need to go to the hospital; everything can be done at home, which saves both money and stress. This is truly convenient for people," Ms. Zhao notes.

"999" services go beyond transportation and extend to even the most minute aspects of home care. Using the "999" platform, pilot "Happy Longevity" elderly care projects have been launched in many districts of Beijing, combining resources to provide professional medical and domestic services at home. Nineteen types of professional medical services, including nasogastric tube insertion, wound dressing, home blood draws, and other care services, including mealtime assistance, hygiene, and cleaning, are available with a single phone call or the press of a button. Some of these services are eligible for reimbursement through health insurance.

"My 85-year-old mother requires feeding through a nasogastric tube after a stroke. Previously, she had to go to the hospital to have the tube replaced monthly. Now, medical staff make regular home visits, which has significantly eased our burden," shares Ms. Zhang, a resident of Beijing's Chaoyang District. She says the "999" service makes home care more reliable, allowing her children to work undisturbed.

The 999 service currently operates six types of specialized vehicles, including vehicles for elderly care and medical transport. The medical staff accompanying patients are suitably qualified. Services include transportation within the city, intercity travel, home care, and other services.

From a city governance perspective, the standardized and citizen-focused development of the "999" service is an important measure for Beijing to optimize the allocation of public service resources. A clear division of functions—emergency assistance: 120, non-emergency: 999—allows limited ambulance resources to be focused on saving critical patients, while non-emergency transportation is professionalized and market-based. This model represents a replicable and scalable practical experience for the entire country in addressing the issue of an aging population and improving the elderly care service network.

The 999 cars on the streets of Beijing are more than just vehicles; they are the tangible embodiment of the customer-centric approach to building a "Healthy China." From national strategic planning to practical implementation on the ground, from targeted policy measures to the compassionate delivery of services, China, by offering diverse and high-quality elderly care services, ensures a happy retirement for hundreds of millions of seniors.

As China deepens its national strategy to actively respond to population aging, it will continue to expand and improve the quality of accessible elderly care services. Projects like "999," which are rooted in primary care and serve the population, will inevitably unite into a powerful force capable of protecting the lives of the elderly, writing a shining chapter in the annals of China's well-being in the new era.

Imitating an eagle, a dove, a butterfly, a beetle… Have Chinese drones really "evolved" to this extent? Let's find out the details!

Ornithopters are a type of bionic unmanned aerial vehicle that do not require high-speed propellers or engines to generate lift and thrust. Instead, they mimic flying creatures, achieving flight through the flapping and vibration of their wings. They are, in fact, the closest thing to flying machines known.

The Intelligent Bionic Unmanned Systems research team at the Beijing University of Science and Technology has focused its efforts on developing four types of ornithopters: eagle, pigeon, butterfly, and beetle imitations. Among them, the eagle-imitating ornithopter, using a specialized eagle-like visual structure, is capable of accurately recognizing and tracking ground targets at various distances. The maximum continuous flight time of one eagle-imitating ornithopter model reaches 256 minutes.

The creation of ornithopters, which represent the most advanced technologies, faces significant challenges.

The researchers note that in the future, ornithopters need to be made "smarter and capable of autonomous flight."

Boao, Hainan Province, March 26 (Xinhua) — China's commitment to promoting high-level openness to the outside world will be an important factor in the development of economic globalization built on the principles of equality and respect for the national interests of all countries, Kirill Babaev, director of the Institute of China and Modern Asia of the Russian Academy of Sciences (ICSA RAS), said Wednesday at the annual meeting of the Boao Forum for Asia 2026 (BAF) in the coastal town of Boao in the island province of Hainan, southern China.

This year, the BAF annual meeting is being held from March 24 to 27 under the motto “Shaping a Common Future: New Dynamics, New Opportunities, New Cooperation.”

According to K. Babaev, the BAF is one of the most important platforms for interaction not only between business leaders and government officials from Asian countries, but also between representatives of other continents. It allows for a free and frank discussion of where Asia is heading today and how the world can most effectively interact with it.

According to the "Annual Report on Asian Economic Integration Prospects and Progress 2026" released by the BAF on Tuesday, Asia's share of global GDP is estimated to continue its upward trajectory, increasing from 49.2 percent in 2025 to 49.7 percent in 2026 in purchasing power parity terms.

"Today, Asia is one of the drivers of global economic and technological development, so it's important for the entire world to understand the trends, new technological advantages, and processes currently occurring in Asian countries in order to plan their business in all regions of the world," noted K. Babaev.

He added that the launch of independent customs operations throughout the Hainan Free Trade Port (HFTP) has attracted the interest of businessmen from across the Asia-Pacific region (APR) and will contribute to the intensification of trade and economic cooperation throughout the region.

According to K. Babaev, Hainan is currently the center of Russian tourism in China. The island attracts the interest of not only tourists but also businessmen from all over Russia, and this will contribute to the overall development of trade and economic relations between China and Russia.

Openness is a crucial feature of Russian-Chinese relations today, and the construction of a free trade zone in Hainan will further strengthen cooperation across all areas between our countries and peoples, said K. Babayev.

According to him, China is attracting an increasing number of Russian businessmen, who are discovering not only opportunities for doing business and investing, but also for technology transfer, because today China is a technological leader in many areas, and Russian businessmen are extremely interested in these technologies.

Established in 2001, the Boao Forum for Asia is a non-governmental and non-profit international organization dedicated to promoting regional economic integration and supporting Asian countries in achieving their development goals.

Boao, China, March 26 (Xinhua) — China has become a global leader in robotics and green energy – sectors that are not isolated but fundamental to the economy of the future. Group of 48 Chairman Jack Perry said this in an interview with Xinhua on the sidelines of the annual meeting of the Boao Forum for Asia on Tuesday.

The speed of China's technological and innovative development in recent years has been incredible, he noted.

China's strategy for high-quality development and the creation of new-quality productive forces targets high-tech industry, stimulating technology-driven growth and moving Chinese manufacturing up global value chains, said J. Perry.

He said China was later to develop high-tech sectors than many other countries, but has become a global leader, made significant progress, and is changing the global innovation landscape.

The British entrepreneur emphasized that China's tech boom has attracted global investors who recognize its long-term stability and growth potential. "China is building world-class capabilities in industry after industry. For those seeking to build wealth over generations, mainland China remains a key long-term investment destination," he stated.

At the same time, China's openness has entered a new phase: it's no longer just about Chinese brands entering the global market, but also about global brands being nurtured and launched in China, the agency's source said.

The concept of "made in China" is being transformed into "created in China, grown in China, sold by China," which gives the country greater control over sales markets and global supply chains, noted J. Perry.

He emphasized the importance of regulating artificial intelligence (AI) and expressed strong support for China's proposed Global AI Governance Initiative. While AI transcends borders, issues such as data, privacy, digital assets, and financial applications remain highly sensitive, the entrepreneur said.

The world must work together to establish rules for artificial intelligence, said J. Perry, stressing that dialogue and joint guidelines are necessary to prevent abuses, crimes and disorderly development.

J. Perry also emphasized the growing central role of Asia, calling it the driving force of the global economy and adding that the region's geographic advantages, industrial clusters and dynamically developing markets are attracting attention and investment from around the world.

He called on Asia to continue strengthening economic ties, learn from ASEAN integration, and use mechanisms such as the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership to reduce trade barriers and mitigate the impact of protectionism and tariff increases.

"No country can thrive alone in an unstable world. Regional and multilateral cooperation is indispensable," said J. Perry.

As a strong supporter of multilateralism, China, he said, brings stability and confidence to the global economy. –0–

BEIJING, March 26 (Xinhua) — China has made great strides in exploring for rare earth elements, fluorite and barite in southwest Sichuan Province, the Ministry of Natural Resources said.

Newly discovered rare earth oxide reserves in the Maonyuping mountainous area of Mianning County in the province amount to 9.666 million tons.

According to experts, this discovery marks a significant addition to the country's strategic reserves of rare earth elements. It also represents an innovative example of mineral exploration at great depths and in adjacent areas in a region with complex geological structures.

In addition to rare earth element deposits, the same mining area also yielded 27.135 million tons of fluorite and 37.228 million tons of barite, both of which are classified as ultra-large deposits.

Wang Denghong, Director of the Institute of Mineral Resources of the Chinese Academy of Geological Sciences, emphasized the importance of discovering geological reserves of these two types of minerals.

"If rare earth metals are the 'vitamins' of industry, then fluorite and barite are its essential foundation and support. They are irreplaceable and sought-after resources, for which demand is high," he explained.

Fluorite is a vital mineral resource in modern industry. It is widely used in aerospace, pharmaceuticals, electronics, mechanical engineering, and nuclear power.

Barite, in turn, finds wide application in the oil and gas industry, and also plays an important role in the production of chemicals, fillers, and medical imaging. -0-
