Zagreb, January 16 (Xinhua) — All members of the European Union (EU) and NATO countries, with the exception of the United States, are expressing "broad solidarity" with Denmark on the Greenland issue, Croatian Prime Minister Andrej Plenković said on Friday.

Denmark, as a NATO member, has consistently stood shoulder to shoulder with American soldiers in all of the alliance's operations around the world, national television channel HRT quotes him as saying.

The Danish political scene is gripped by "great shock and disbelief" following US President Donald Trump's repeated statements about wanting to gain control of Greenland, the prime minister said, calling for dialogue between Washington and Copenhagen.

“Anything that could be based on a sudden military intervention or US presence in Greenland is, in my deep conviction, very bad,” A. Plenkovic emphasized. –0–

Moscow, January 16 (Xinhua) – Russian President Vladimir Putin held a telephone conversation with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, the Kremlin press service announced on Friday.

"During a telephone conversation, President of the Islamic Republic of Iran Masoud Pezeshkian informed Vladimir Putin of the Iranian leadership's active efforts to normalize the situation in the country," the statement said.

As noted, Russia and Iran consistently advocate a unified position in favor of a rapid de-escalation of tensions around Iran and in the region as a whole, and for resolving emerging problems exclusively through political and diplomatic means.

“The mutual commitment to further strengthening the Russian-Iranian strategic partnership and the practical implementation of joint economic projects in various fields was confirmed,” the Kremlin emphasized.

Moscow, January 16 (Xinhua) – Moscow appreciates Washington's efforts to peacefully resolve the situation in Ukraine; they are in line with Russian interests, Russian presidential press secretary Dmitry Peskov told reporters on Friday.

"The United States' efforts to bring the Ukrainian settlement to a political and diplomatic level are in our interests. We appreciate Washington's efforts in this regard," he said.

According to the press secretary, a settlement around Ukraine is impossible without a broad discussion of European security. "For peace to be established, joint efforts are needed on opposing tracks," said D. Peskov. "This is precisely the point: discussing the issue of a Ukrainian settlement without discussing European security in a broader context is also impossible. One way or another, security guarantees will touch on this issue. And for this, of course, dialogue is necessary," the Kremlin spokesman noted.

According to D. Peskov, Russia is interested in hosting a new visit by American negotiators on Ukraine—US Presidential Envoy Steven Witkoff and entrepreneur Jared Kushner. However, the exact dates have not yet been determined.

A Kremlin spokesman also called the situation around Greenland extraordinary. "We, like the rest of the world, are certainly monitoring the situation around Greenland. We are noting a very controversial situation. We proceed from the premise that Greenland is the territory of the Kingdom of Denmark," he said, commenting on US plans to establish control over the island. "The situation is unusual, I would even say extraordinary from the standpoint of international law," added D. Peskov. –0– Oleg

BEIJING, Jan. 16 (Xinhua) — Separatist forces seeking "Taiwan independence" and opposing the will of the people are doomed to end up in the dustbin of history, Chinese Defense Ministry spokesman Zhang Xiaogang said at a press conference on Friday.

He made this statement while commenting on the results of a survey conducted in Taiwan, at the media's request. According to the survey, more than 60 percent of respondents do not want to participate in war or see their relatives do so.

The survey results show that the majority of Taiwanese people want peace, development, exchanges and cooperation, not confrontation or conflict, let alone war, he noted.

More and more people are realizing that the Lai Qingde administration is a peace-breaker, a crisis-maker, and a war-monger, he added.

“No one wants to become cannon fodder for the sake of so-called ‘Taiwan independence,’” Zhang Xiaogang continued.

The Taiwan issue, he said, is a purely internal Chinese matter, not open to outside interference. "All options for severe punishment of separatist forces seeking 'Taiwan independence' remain under consideration," he concluded.

UN, January 16 (Xinhua) — Chargé d'affaires of the Permanent Mission of the People's Republic of China to the United Nations Sun Lei called on the United States to abandon its fixation on the use of force against Iran at an emergency meeting of the Security Council on Thursday.

Recent events in Iran have attracted widespread attention, he noted. The US continues to make statements about the situation in Iran and openly threatens the Islamic Republic with force, resulting in war clouds gathering over the Middle East and tensions continuing to escalate, the diplomat stated.

"The use of force will never solve problems, but will only make them more complex and intractable. Any military adventurism will only push the region toward an unpredictable abyss," Sun Lei emphasized.

According to him, history has repeatedly proven that an obsession with force, relentless pressure, and unjustified interference only breed new conflicts and hatred. No country has the right to dictate the future of another, and any actions that violate international law are unacceptable, the diplomat added.

“We call on the international community to stand on the right side of history and on the side of justice, and to work tirelessly for peace and stability in the Middle East, as well as peace and tranquility throughout the world,” he said.

Sovereign equality and non-interference in internal affairs are fundamental principles of international law and the most fundamental norms regulating modern international relations, Sun Lei emphasized. Iran is an independent sovereign state whose affairs should be resolved by its people themselves, he stated.

China supports efforts to safeguard Iran's sovereignty, security and territorial integrity and calls on the international community to support the Iranian government and people in overcoming the current difficulties and maintaining national security and social stability, Sun Lei said. –0–

Minsk, January 16 (Xinhua) — A large-scale, snap inspection of the armed forces began in Belarus on Friday. This was announced by State Secretary of the country's Security Council, Alexander Volfovich, as quoted by the Belta news agency.

"A large-scale inspection of the armed forces has been launched at the direction of the President of Belarus. It will be comprehensive and consist of several stages. The inspections will be carried out on a surprise basis," noted A. Volfovich.

According to him, the inspection is being conducted, including taking into account Russia's experience in special military operations and its implementation in the military. Among other things, it will examine issues related to the protection of military units and countering modern weapons, particularly unmanned aerial vehicles.

The official also reported that the inspection plan has been approved by the President of Belarus, who will personally participate in it. The Belarusian leader will determine which units will be inspected and when.

It is known that the first unit to be inspected is the technical support unit. This is one of the largest military units in the Belarusian Armed Forces, where various armored vehicles and military equipment are stored.

"We'll see how various armored vehicle models are removed from storage within the timeframes established by regulations. Several tanks, infantry fighting vehicles, and armored personnel carriers have been removed from storage by the military unit itself, without the need for additional resources," explained A. Volfovich.

The result will be a test run of the removed samples of weapons and military equipment, covering a distance of approximately 15-20 km. –0–

Kyiv, January 16 /Xinhua/ – Due to massive Russian strikes in the Ukrainian energy sector, a state of emergency has been declared, First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Energy of Ukraine Denys Shmyhal announced on Telegram on Friday.

According to him, such a regime is necessary for maximum coordination of the actions of all services in Kyiv and the regions.

D. Shmygal noted that Ukraine first and foremost needs to strengthen the work of emergency response teams in the energy sector, as well as in the electric power systems of Kyiv and the Kyiv region.

In addition, the country will change the rules for citizens' movement on the streets during curfew, allowing them to freely access "points of invincibility" at night, D. Shmygal added.

He also reported that relevant state-owned companies have been instructed to urgently ensure electricity imports by the end of the current heating season, amounting to at least 50 percent of total consumption.

Earlier this week, Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko stated that, due to Russia's massive strikes on Ukraine's energy sector, the city is experiencing the most difficult situation since the start of the armed conflict between the two countries.

Following the January 9 shelling, 6,000 apartment buildings in Kyiv were left without heat amid severe frosts. By January 15, the number of such buildings had dropped to 300. Over 1,200 heating stations have been set up for residents of the Ukrainian capital.

Beijing, January 16 (Xinhua) — A new China-Europe freight railway route opened recently, linking Weizi Station in Changzhi City, North China's Shanxi Province, with Russia's Solombalka Railway Station via the Ereenhot Border Crossing in North China's Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region. This brings the number of China-Europe railway routes passing through this border crossing to 75, the Neimenggu Ribao daily reported on Friday.

The Ereenhot checkpoint is a key hub in the central corridor of international railway freight transport between China and Europe, as well as in the China-Mongolia-Russia economic corridor.

Since 2013, when China-Europe trains began operating through the Ereenhot checkpoint, more than 21,000 such trains have passed through it. In 2025, it handled a record number of China-Europe trains – 3,986.

China-Europe freight routes passing through the Ereenhot Port Port connect over 70 cities or stations in more than 10 countries, as well as over 60 cities in 24 provincial-level administrative divisions in China. The range of goods carried by these trains exceeds 10,000 items, including new energy vehicles, auto parts, and mechanical equipment.
