BEIJING, January 21 (Xinhua) — China will strengthen coordination between policymaking, public services, and labor market monitoring in 2026 to ensure overall employment stability, Minister of Human Resources and Social Security Wang Xiaoping said.

Facing a complex and volatile international environment and the daunting challenges of reform and development, this year will be crucial to accelerate the creation of a job-friendly development model by strengthening the coordination of fiscal, monetary, industrial and employment policies, she said in an interview with Xinhua.

According to her, the employment situation in China is generally assessed as stable in 2025. Last year, 12.67 million new jobs were created in the country's cities and towns, and the average unemployment rate was 5.2 percent.

To stabilize existing jobs, the Chinese authorities will make full use of support measures such as reimbursing enterprises' unemployment insurance premiums for maintaining jobs, reducing tax payments, and continuing to gradually reduce unemployment insurance and occupational injury insurance premium rates.

At the same time, China will strive to create more jobs in emerging and future industries, Wang Xiaoping added, emphasizing that authorities will pay more attention to sectors related to elderly and child care, which play an equally important role in promoting employment.

Specific groups of the population, including university graduates and migrant workers, will be provided with targeted policy support to facilitate their employment.

According to Wang Xiaoping, vocational training will become another important focus in 2026. The rapid development of new productive forces, a modern industrial system, and technological transformation are increasing the demands on worker qualifications, she added.

To address these issues, China has launched large-scale vocational training programs across the country. Since last year, more than 11 million people have been enrolled in government-subsidized training programs.

She also emphasized the growing role of flexible and new forms of employment in promoting employment, noting that the country will support workers engaged in flexible and new forms of employment to join the workers' pension insurance so that they can enjoy better social security, and will expand the pilot occupational injury protection program nationwide to cover more such workers.

Wang Xiaoping noted that China will also continue to deepen key social security reforms, ensure pension payments in full and on time, provide benefits to low-income groups, and expand the coverage of supplementary pensions funded by enterprises. -0-

BEIJING, January 21 (Xinhua) — China is ready to cooperate with all parties to build a clean and beautiful world, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun said on Wednesday.

Guo Jiakun made the remark at a regular departmental press conference, commenting on the latest data, which showed that China's total electricity consumption in 2025 will exceed 10 trillion kWh, and the share of installed capacity from non-fossil energy sources will account for more than 60 percent of the total installed capacity.

China's green manufacturing capacity not only enriches its own energy supply, but also creates significant opportunities for countries in the Global South to achieve breakthrough low-carbon development, he said.

China's new energy products and technologies, with high quality and affordable prices, meet the urgent needs of developing countries for sustainable and affordable energy, offering a viable alternative to fossil fuels and paving the way for green development.

"Green transformation will not only promote the sustainable development of human society, but will also better guarantee the right of all countries to equal development," Guo Jiakun said, adding that China is willing to continue to cooperate with all parties to build a clean and beautiful world. -0-

SEOUL, Jan. 21 (Xinhua) — Former South Korean Prime Minister Han Deok-soo was sentenced to 23 years in prison on Wednesday for aiding a coup led by impeached former South Korean President Yoon Seok-yol.

The Seoul Central District Court sentenced Han Duk-soo to prison for complicity in the rebellion and taking key actions related to the former president's declaration of martial law.

Independent prosecutor Cho Eun-seok's team, responsible for investigating the coup and other related crimes of Yun Seok-yeol, has requested a 15-year prison sentence for the former president.

The court confirmed that Yun Seok-yeol's imposition of martial law on December 3, 2024, constituted an act of rebellion aimed at undermining the constitutional order, finding that Han Deok-soo helped create the appearance of legitimacy for the illegal martial law by holding an illegal cabinet meeting.

The court ruled that had he fulfilled his duties as prime minister, the coup could have been prevented. Han Duk-soo reportedly attempted to conceal documents related to martial law for his own safety, producing and subsequently destroying forged documents to make the declaration of martial law appear legal.

Following the verdict, the court ordered the former prime minister to be remanded in custody in the courtroom, citing the risk of destruction of evidence.

The trial court will deliver its verdict in the sedition case against Yun Seok-yeol on February 19. –0–

SHANGHAI, Jan. 21 (Xinhua) — Shanghai's gross regional product (GRP) grew 5.4 percent year-on-year in 2025 to exceed 5.67 trillion yuan (about 814.1 billion U.S. dollars), the city's statistics bureau said Wednesday.

The main drivers of economic development in this financial hub in eastern China are industry and the service sector. Shanghai's primary, secondary, and tertiary value added totaled 9.94 billion yuan, 1.165 trillion yuan, and 4.496 trillion yuan, respectively, representing year-on-year growth of 2 percent, 3.5 percent, and 6 percent.

According to the Shanghai Municipal Bureau of Statistics, the city's industrial added value increased by 5 percent last year compared to the previous year. Among industrial sectors, production of railway, shipbuilding, aerospace, and other transportation equipment increased by 15.8 percent year-on-year. Electrical equipment and instrument production increased by 11.1 percent, and automobile manufacturing by 7.8 percent.

Remarkably, Shanghai has made significant progress in developing new productive capacities. In 2025, the output of Shanghai's three leading industries—integrated circuits, biomedicine, and artificial intelligence—grew by 9.6 percent year-on-year. In integrated circuits and artificial intelligence, growth was 15.1 percent and 13.6 percent, respectively.

Despite the backdrop of international trade tensions, Shanghai's foreign trade reached a record high, with total import and export volume reaching 4.51 trillion yuan, up 5.6 percent from a year earlier.

A particularly bright spot was the export of products from the "new three"—electric vehicles, lithium-ion batteries, and photovoltaic products: the total export value reached 160 billion yuan, an increase of 17.4 percent. In particular, the export value of electric vehicles increased by 13.8 percent.

Shanghai's GRP exceeded 5 trillion yuan for the first time in 2024, three years after it first surpassed 4 trillion yuan. In 2006, the city became the first in mainland China to surpass 1 trillion yuan in GRP. -0-
