China and Central Asia are entering a new stage of economic rapprochement, says the editor-in-chief of the Delovoy Kazakhstan newspaper.

Almaty, January 21 (Xinhua) — The figures for trade turnover between China and the five Central Asian countries in 2025 conceal a significant process: the formation of a sustainable and long-term model of economic interaction between China and Central Asia, based not only on trade per se, but also on infrastructure, investment, industrial cooperation, and a high level of political consensus. This was stated by Serik Korzhumbayev, editor-in-chief of the newspaper "Business Kazakhstan," in an opinion piece published on Wednesday.

According to data published earlier this year by the General Administration of Customs of the People's Republic of China, trade turnover between China and Central Asian countries will exceed $100 billion for the first time in history in 2025, reaching $106.3 billion. According to S. Korzhumbayev, surpassing the $100 billion mark is a significant milestone in itself. However, the quality of this trade is crucial.

According to official statistics, China's exports to Central Asian countries reached $71.2 billion in 2025. The so-called three new categories—electric vehicles, lithium batteries, and solar panels—occupied a prominent place. According to the editor-in-chief of a Kazakh newspaper, this essentially means Central Asia is gradually integrating into modern production and technological chains, rather than maintaining a peripheral role as a raw materials supplier.

China's imports from the region totaled $35.1 billion, with a significant expansion in the range of non-resource goods, including chemical and metallurgical products and highly processed agricultural goods. "This is a particularly important signal for the economies of Central Asia—trade with China is increasingly contributing to diversification and domestic development," emphasized S. Korzhumbayev.

According to him, the growth in trade turnover would not have been possible without the parallel development of infrastructure and new trade formats. In 2025, China and Central Asian countries actively promoted cross-border e-commerce, modernization of warehouse and transport logistics, cross-border settlement and payment systems, and institutional trade facilitation platforms.

“Taken together, these elements form the practical content of the Belt and Road Initiative, transforming it into a holistic economic ecosystem where trade, investment, and technology mutually reinforce each other,” the article notes.

The author believes that the growth of trade and economic ties between China and Central Asia is particularly significant given the global turbulence, trade conflicts, and weakening of traditional multilateral mechanisms. Against this backdrop, the regional cooperation model appears to be a space for stability and prudent pragmatism.

For Kazakhstan, as S. Korzhumbayev added, this means an opportunity not only to increase foreign trade indicators, but also to consolidate its role as a key economic hub in Eurasia. For the entire region, this is a chance to integrate into global value chains on more favorable and sustainable terms.

Davos, Switzerland, January 21 (Xinhua) — U.S. President Donald Trump said on Wednesday that Europe is "moving in the wrong direction," noting that some parts of the continent have become "unrecognizable" in a "very negative" way.

The President of the United States made the relevant statements while speaking at the 2026 annual session of the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.

In his speech, Donald Trump again criticized Europe's migration policy and expressed his opposition to the Green Agenda, once again calling it a "new green scam." He advocated for expanded fossil fuel production and accelerated approval of new nuclear energy projects, claiming that the energy situation in Europe had reached a "catastrophic" level, characterized by high prices and low supplies.

Minsk, January 21 (Xinhua) – Belarusian Foreign Minister Maxim Ryzhenkov expressed confidence in warming relations with his European neighbors. The Belta news agency published the statement on Wednesday.

"I'm most hopeful that cooperation will be restored most quickly with Poland. This is a country that sees itself as a true regional leader and is doing everything to achieve this—pursuing a pragmatic policy in which it cannot afford any blind spots," stated M. Ryzhenkov, adding that he expects cooperation to be built in the interests of people on both sides of the Belarusian-Polish border, and a return to trade, economic, and people-to-people interaction.

Meanwhile, the Belarusian Foreign Minister has a different view on Lithuania. "This is a country where politicians, unfortunately, don't think and don't intend to think about their people. They owe their positions not to the Lithuanian people, but to the regional committees in Brussels or Washington. And they'll do whatever they're told. This makes them unpredictable," explained M. Ryzhenkov.

In his opinion, when the window of opportunity for resuming cooperation with Lithuania opens, “we will have to think several times about how far to open this window and whether it should be opened at all.” –0–

Brussels, Jan. 21 (Xinhua) — The European Parliament on Wednesday voted to refer the free trade agreement between the European Union and the South American Common Market (Mercosur) to the Court of Justice of the European Union for review, a move that could slow its ratification process and increase uncertainty over its implementation.

The EU and Mercosur officially signed a free trade agreement on January 17 in the Paraguayan capital Asunción.

Kunming, January 21 (Xinhua) — Twenty-one government officials face penalties for a coal mine accident in southwest China's Yunnan Province in 2024 that killed six people, according to the Yunnan Bureau of the National Mine Safety Administration.

According to an investigation report recently released by the department, a sudden coal and gas outburst occurred at the Goutou Coal Mine in Weixin County, Yunnan Province, at 5:35 a.m. on August 18, 2024, killing six people, injuring one, and causing direct economic losses of about 10.7 million yuan (about 1.53 million U.S. dollars).

The investigation found that the accident was caused by negligence and gross violation of laws and regulations in the operation of the coal mine, inadequate performance of duties by the relevant mine safety authorities, and inadequate supervision by local authorities.

The incident investigation team recommended that 40 individuals be held accountable. Specifically, the cases of 10 individuals, including the mine's legal representative, general director, and manager, are to be referred to the courts in accordance with the law, while the cases of 21 local government officials are to be referred to disciplinary and supervisory authorities.
