Kyiv, January 29 (Xinhua) — Ukraine and Russia conducted the first exchange of bodies this year on Thursday. Petro Andryushchenko, head of the Ukrainian Center for the Study of the Occupation, announced this on Telegram.

According to him, Ukraine received the remains of 1,000 people and handed over the bodies of 38 victims to the Russian Federation.

Ukraine's Coordination Headquarters for the Treatment of Prisoners of War later confirmed the exchange of remains with Russia on Thursday.

The headquarters noted that, according to the Russian side, the 1,000 bodies handed over to Kyiv belong to Ukrainian servicemen. However, this information will be verified by law enforcement agencies in conjunction with expert institutions of the Ukrainian Ministry of Internal Affairs.

Since the beginning of the Russian-Ukrainian armed conflict, Kyiv and Moscow have regularly exchanged the remains of the fallen. The previous exchange took place in December of last year.

Paris, January 29 (Xinhua) — Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen on Wednesday denied reports of a NATO-US agreement on Greenland.

"It's not an agreement," M. Frederiksen told French television channel France 2 when asked about US President Donald Trump's announcement in Davos that he had reached an agreement with NATO on Greenland.

In essence, the state is sovereign, its borders must be respected, as must the right of other peoples to self-determination, M. Frederiksen said in an interview.

If military means are used in Greenland, everything will come to a standstill, M. Frederiksen noted, adding that “it would go against everything we have built since the end of World War II.”

M. Frederiksen arrived in France on Wednesday together with Greenlandic Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen.

French President Emmanuel Macron said at a joint press conference that the escalation of tensions with the United States over Greenland is a strategic alarm signal for Europe as a whole, while reaffirming France's solidarity with Denmark and Greenland.

Greenland, the world's largest island, is an autonomous territory within the Kingdom of Denmark. Copenhagen retains control over Greenland's defense and foreign policy. Since returning to office in 2025, US President Donald Trump has repeatedly expressed a desire to "acquire" Greenland—a move Europe has repeatedly rejected.

BEIJING, Jan. 29 (Xinhua) — Chinese President Xi Jinping and visiting British Prime Minister Keir Starmer agreed in Beijing on Thursday that the two countries should develop a long-term and stable comprehensive strategic partnership.

During the meeting, Xi Jinping said that today, when the world is experiencing both changes and turbulence, China and the United Kingdom, as permanent members of the UN Security Council and two of the world's largest economies, should strengthen dialogue and cooperation, which is necessary for maintaining world peace and stability, as well as for ensuring economic development and people's well-being in both countries.

Xi Jinping stressed the need to look at history from a broader perspective, calling on both countries to overcome differences and maintain mutual respect to turn the promising potential of cooperation into remarkable achievements, open up new horizons for China-UK relations and cooperation, and benefit the peoples of the two countries and the rest of the world.

China is committed to peaceful development, has never started a war, and has never occupied an inch of foreign land, Xi Jinping emphasized.

China will never pose a threat to other countries, no matter how the country grows and develops, Xi Jinping told Keir Starmer, who is in Beijing on a four-day official visit, the first by a British prime minister in eight years.

Xi Jinping said that the essence of trade and economic cooperation between China and the UK is mutual benefit and win-win, so both countries should expand mutually beneficial cooperation in education, healthcare, finance and the service industry.

He also called on both sides to conduct joint research and industrial transformation in artificial intelligence, life sciences, new energy and low-carbon technologies, among others, to achieve common development and prosperity.

"We hope the British side will provide a fair, equal and non-discriminatory business environment for Chinese enterprises," Xi said, adding that the two sides should strengthen people-to-people ties and continue to promote people-to-people exchanges.

He expressed hope that government officials, parliamentarians and representatives of various sectors of the public in the UK regions would visit China more frequently and thus form a comprehensive, objective and well-founded understanding of China.

According to him, China is actively considering the possibility of unilaterally exempting the visa requirements for the British.

Noting that the international order has been undergoing serious upheavals for some time, Xi Jinping said that international law is only truly effective if all countries adhere to it. Moreover, major countries must play a leading role in this regard, otherwise the world risks returning to the law of the jungle.

Xi Jinping said that China and the UK, as advocates of multilateralism and free trade, should jointly uphold and practice genuine multilateralism and promote the building of a more just and rational global governance system so as to build an equitable and orderly multipolar world and realize an inclusive and inclusive globalization. -0-

BEIJING, Jan. 29 (Xinhua) — China's Defense Ministry on Thursday warned against a revival of Japanese militarism, declaring China's readiness to work with all peace-loving countries to prevent it.

With the new administration taking office, Japan is taking active steps to build up its military power and seeks to accelerate the easing of restrictions on military development, Defense Ministry spokesman Jiang Bin said, commenting on the new Japanese government's recent military actions.

He noted that Japan had acquired offensive weapons under the pretext of strengthening its “potential for retaliatory strikes” and had openly advocated nuclear weapons in violation of the obligations it had assumed as a losing country and enshrined in legally binding international documents, including the Cairo and Potsdam Declarations.

Such actions pose a serious threat to peace and stability in Asia and the world as a whole and raise heightened concerns among countries in the region and the international community, Jiang Bin pointed out.

"China will work with all peace-loving countries to resolutely suppress the resurgence of the specter of militarism and firmly safeguard the post-war international order as well as international fairness and justice," he said. -0-

TIANJIN, Jan. 29 (Xinhua) — In preparation for the launch of the light rail transit (LRT) system in the Kazakh capital Astana, 20 LRT train operators from Kazakhstan will undergo training in the north Chinese city of Tianjin for three months.

The LRT project in Astana is being implemented with the participation of Chinese companies, including the Tianjin Rail Transport Corporation (TRT). This is the first light rail network in Astana and in Central Asia as a whole.

For cadets from Kazakhstan, TRT Corporation developed a rigorous training program consisting of theoretical courses, training on simulation systems, and, finally, practical internship on rolling stock, so that they gain a thorough understanding of dispatching technologies and operating regulations for rail transport based on Chinese standards.

The Astana LRT project, covering over 21 kilometers, will reportedly fully implement Chinese technological standards and utilize a Chinese-made automated driverless system. It is expected that after training in Tianjin, Kazakhstani workers will be able to more easily and quickly adapt to LRT operations.

Training for personnel for the Astana LRT project began in Tianjin in June 2025, when a group of 29 people arrived from Kazakhstan. They were replaced by a second group of 20 in December of that year.

As a reminder, according to the previously signed framework agreement, the first phase of the LRT project in Astana will be over 21 kilometers long, with 18 stations and one train depot. The new transportation system is expected to nearly halve travel time between the two ends of the LRT line, effectively alleviate urban congestion during rush hour, stimulate economic revitalization along the route, and improve Astana's overall image and urban competitiveness.

As a key project in the Belt and Road Initiative, Chinese companies are participating in all aspects of the Astana LRT project, from design and construction to operation and training of technical personnel. They will have to overcome a number of engineering and construction challenges, such as extreme temperatures down to minus 40 degrees Celsius, frequent strong winds, and high groundwater levels, as well as implement advanced environmental technologies.
