SHANGHAI, Jan. 31 (Xinhua) — British Prime Minister Keir Starmer stressed the importance of people-to-people communication in strengthening mutual trust and respect between countries during a visit to Shanghai, east China, on Saturday.

The British Prime Minister took part in a question-and-answer session with Chinese middle school students, during which he quoted the Chinese proverb "the blind men feel the elephant" to illustrate the importance of understanding China as a whole.

According to the parable, several blind men touch different parts of an elephant, and each comes to their own conclusion: one feels the trunk and thinks it's a snake; another touches the leg and says it's a pillar; and a third touches the belly and thinks it's a wall.

“That’s a very good way of explaining why things like this visit are so important,” said Starmer.

On Friday afternoon, Starmer visited the centuries-old Yuyuan Garden. While at this iconic site, the British Prime Minister was impressed by the traditional Chinese lanterns, which creatively combined elements of Chinese and British cultures: the River Thames in London and the Huangpu River in Shanghai, as well as Scottish tartan patterns and a horse motif, a symbol of the approaching Spring Festival (Chinese Spring Festival, the traditional Chinese New Year according to the lunar calendar).

This is the first visit by a British prime minister to China in eight years. Shanghai is the second stop after Beijing on Starmer's four-day trip to China.

“I am absolutely convinced that the more we communicate, the stronger the foundation of mutual trust and respect we can build,” said Starmer, adding that this is where the bright future and vast opportunities lie.

The delegation, led by K. Starmer, included the heads of more than 50 major UK companies and representatives of British institutions. They represent leading sectors of the British economy, including finance, medicine, manufacturing, culture, and the creative industries.

TEHRAN, January 31 (Xinhua) — Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) on Saturday strongly denied rumors that its naval commander Alireza Tangsiri had been killed.

A statement published on the official IRGC news portal, Sepah News, noted that the rumor was spread by the Israeli social media account Terror Alarm. The IRGC described the account as "an operational unit of the Mossad (Israeli intelligence service) in psychological warfare."

The statement added that the account had previously spread rumors related to security and military matters, claiming that the commander of the IRGC's Quds Force, Ismail Qaani, had been killed.

According to Sepah News, the spread of such rumors by Terror Alarm seems more understandable in the context of US President Donald Trump's psychological operation, which involves sending military naval groups to the West Asian region in recent days.

Also on Saturday, the IRGC Navy denied the rumor, saying no drone attacks had been carried out on its headquarters in Hormozgan province and no buildings associated with the IRGC forces had been destroyed, Iran's semi-official Fars news agency reported.

Baku, January 31 /Xinhua/ — China's economic growth is opening up new opportunities to expand the potential of the Belt and Road Initiative and the Middle Corridor, which will benefit the entire region and allow more countries to join these projects, Azerbaijani economist and member of the Milli Majlis (parliament) Vugar Bayramov said in an interview with Xinhua.

China's economy is projected to grow by 5 percent in 2025, reaching 140.19 trillion yuan (approximately $20.01 trillion), meeting its annual target. Bayramov noted that the growth and stability of China's economy, the second-largest in the world, play a key role in the development of the vast region, including the South Caucasus.

As part of the Belt and Road Initiative and the Middle Corridor, China has supported numerous regional infrastructure projects, some of which have received financial assistance, the expert stated. He added that China's robust economic growth will continue to attract more countries to participate in these efforts to promote connectivity.

While acknowledging that uncertainty and tariffs continue to weigh on global growth, V. Bayramov noted that China's vast market provides partners with the opportunity to maintain stable trade ties, deepen regional economic cooperation, and develop logistics infrastructure.

"Regional countries, including Azerbaijan, have built strong relationships with China in various areas, including transportation and logistics. This cooperation is beneficial for both our countries and our peoples," our interlocutor emphasized.

According to him, as the main engine of global economic growth, China promotes inclusive economic globalization and remains committed to building an open global economy. The expert noted that the new development dividends generated by China benefit not only the global economy but also countries in the region.

Trade between Azerbaijan and China has grown significantly in recent years, stated V. Bayramov. He emphasized that during Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev's visit to China in 2025, the two countries established a comprehensive strategic partnership and signed a number of contracts in the renewable energy sector.

According to the economist, China's commitment to high-quality development through innovation and green transformation creates new opportunities for partners in the region. China's achievements in renewable energy are helping countries like Azerbaijan accelerate their own green transitions, he said.

"As the development of the Belt and Road Initiative and the Middle Corridor continues to gain momentum, China's strategic partnerships with regional countries will steadily strengthen. This means deeper cooperation, stronger ties, and stability in the region," concluded V. Bayramov.
