Chengdu, Feb. 8 (Xinhua) — Sustained rainfall-induced seepage, which softened mudstone on a very steep slope, triggered a landslide in southwest China's Sichuan Province. An investigation report released Saturday found no direct link between mining activities and the disaster.

A report released by the provincial Department of Natural Resources described the disaster in Jinping Village, located in Junlian County, Yibin City, as a complex natural disaster involving a sudden high-altitude landslide that turned into a mudflow that traveled a long distance.

The landslide occurred at 11:50 a.m. on February 8, 2025, killing 10 people, leaving 19 missing, and injuring two. Direct economic losses from the landslide exceeded 6 million yuan (approximately $862,193).

Milan, Feb. 8 (Xinhua) — Italy "will not be able to join" the US-proposed "Peace Council" because its charter contradicts the Italian Constitution, Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani said on Saturday.

In an interview with the Italian news agency ANSA, he said the council's statute created "insurmountable" legal contradictions with Article 11 of the country's constitution, which does not allow Italy to join organizations unless "conditions of equality with other states" exist.

The charter violates constitutional requirements by appointing US President Donald Trump as chairman with veto power over some of the body's decisions.

A. Tajani stated that Italy is “always ready to discuss initiatives concerning peace” and is ready to play a constructive role on the Gaza issue, including through efforts such as training Palestinian police forces.

He added that Italy reiterated its position during meetings on Friday with US Vice President J.D. Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who were in Italy for the Winter Olympics.

Italy joined a number of European countries, including France, Germany and the UK, in refusing to join the controversial council, formally created by Donald Trump on January 22 at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. –0–

Tokyo, February 8 (Xinhua) — Voting in Japan's general election began Sunday morning. More than 1,200 candidates will compete for 465 seats in the House of Representatives, the influential lower house of parliament.

The main question in the election is whether the ruling coalition of the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) and the Japan Renewal Society Party can secure a majority and continue the administration of Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, or whether the opposition will strengthen its position and prevent such an outcome.

Polling stations across the country will close at 8:00 PM local time. Vote counting is expected to continue late into the night.

SAO PAULO, Feb. 7 (Xinhua) — Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva on Saturday criticized the US administration's interference in the internal affairs of Cuba and Venezuela.

"Our country stands in solidarity with the Cuban people, victims of a bloody massacre provoked by US speculation. And we, as a party, must find ways to help them," he said during the closing ceremony for the 46th anniversary of the Workers' Party in Salvador, Bahia.

The Brazilian President also emphasized that “the Venezuelan problem must be solved by the Venezuelan people, not by the United States or Donald Trump.” –0–

BEIJING, Feb. 8 (Xinhua) — As the lunar Year of the Horse approaches, equestrian-themed products, ranging from creative toys and cultural products to immersive tourism experiences, are taking center stage in China's consumer market.

The festive atmosphere has arrived early at the Gansu Provincial Museum in northwest China. Tourists flock to see cultural products inspired by the museum's treasures. One popular item is the "Green Horse" figurine carrying a gold ingot—a modern interpretation of the famous bronze "Flying Horse" statue from the museum's collection.

Wu Xiaoyu, creative director of the museum's cultural center, noted that the designs of the items focus on auspicious meanings such as wealth and good fortune to align with the public's wishes for a prosperous new year.

Demand for equestrian-themed goods is also high in the manufacturing industry. At the Yiwu International Trade Market, the world's largest wholesale center for small consumer goods in Zhejiang Province, eastern China, toy horses are featured in many store windows.

Market owner Yan Yan said she ships nearly 20,000 dolls daily, and her factory is operating at full capacity to fulfill orders already booked for the post-holiday period.

She added that young consumers are increasingly willing to pay for products that offer emotional value or express their personal hopes, and that she plans to launch interactive AI-powered toys after the Spring Festival.

Equestrianism has also become a powerful driver of the tourism industry. In Zhaosu County in Northwest China's Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region, renowned for its equestrian heritage, horseback performers perform traditional wedding ceremonies in snowy parks.

According to Liu Wei, deputy director of the local tourism service center, the ice and snow season has become a landmark event, and horse-themed rooms and souvenirs have become the top choice for visitors this winter.

Economists believe the surge in consumption of equestrian-themed goods reflects the integration of traditional culture and modern aesthetics. Economic expert Pan Helin stated that innovative product development using market-oriented methods is key to stimulating market activity.

Pan Helin noted that the transition from passive protection to active innovation in the field of cultural heritage has allowed traditional symbols to meet the aesthetic and emotional needs of younger generations.

In 2025, the sales volume of cultural products at Gansu Provincial Museum exceeded 45 million yuan (about 6.47 million US dollars), and new records are expected to be achieved this year.

Museum director Ban Rui said the success is partly due to the team's focus on social attributes and creating "guochao" (Chinese-style fashion goods) products that appeal to young people. -0-

Nuuk, Greenland, Feb. 7 (Xinhua) — Greenlandic Foreign Minister Viviane Motzfeldt and Danish Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen said on Saturday that ongoing talks with the United States "have not yet achieved the desired results," signaling that a final agreement is still far off.

Speaking at a trilateral press conference with the Canadian side to mark the opening of Canada's first consulate in Nuuk, V. Motzfeldt acknowledged that the situation has improved compared to a month ago, implying the beginning of progress along the diplomatic path and direct dialogue with Washington.

At the same time, she noted that Greenland “has not yet achieved the desired results” in the context of the negotiations, and that “there is still a long way to go, so it is too early to say where we will end up.”

L. L. Rasmussen, in turn, stated: "We have made it clear from the outset that any decision must respect our red lines." He also indicated that he believes "it is possible to find a solution that respects our red lines."

The Danish diplomat, however, declined to disclose any details of the negotiations. "We don't conduct these negotiations in the open," L.L. Rasmussen explained, adding that they "fought to move them into a room" where the parties involved could properly converse. –0–

Gaza, February 7 /Xinhua/ — The number of Palestinians killed in Israeli airstrikes since the outbreak of hostilities on October 7, 2023, has reached 72,027, while 171,651 have been wounded, the Gaza-based health ministry reported.

The ministry said in a press statement that 174 new deaths recorded between January 30 and February 6 were added to the official tally after approval by the relevant government committee.

The report added that since the ceasefire in Gaza came into effect on October 10 last year, 576 Palestinians have been killed and another 1,543 people have been injured.

A separate statement stressed that the remaining functioning hospitals in the Palestinian enclave, struggling to continue providing services, have effectively become waiting rooms for thousands of patients, with many of the wounded unsure what awaits them.

The war has made maintaining the healthcare system a daily struggle, seriously hampering the restoration and resumption of specialized medical services, the department noted.

The statement also warned that even basic painkillers have become a rare luxury due to shortages. It noted that 46 percent of essential medications, 66 percent of medical supplies, and 84 percent of laboratory and blood bank supplies have been completely depleted.

It is noted that areas such as cancer treatment, hematology, surgery, intensive care and primary health care have been hit hardest, and the limited resources available are far from being able to cover the existing demand. –0–
