Kabul, March 29 (Xinhua) — Traders from Afghanistan and Uzbekistan signed a series of memorandums of understanding worth a total of $514.8 million, the Afghan Ministry of Industry and Trade announced on Sunday.

"The agreements were signed during the Afghan-Uzbek business conference in Kabul, which was attended by Afghan Minister of Industry and Trade Nuruddin Azizi and the governor of Uzbekistan's Namangan region, Shavkat Abdurazakov," the statement said.

Bilateral relations between the neighboring countries have gained significant momentum. In February, Afghan and Uzbek companies signed 25 memorandums of understanding in Kabul worth over $300 million, underscoring the deepening of economic ties.

Since returning to power in August 2021, the current Afghan government has focused on expanding diplomatic, trade, transit, and economic ties with the international community, particularly with neighboring and regional countries. –0–

Tokyo, March 29 (Xinhua) — Hundreds of Japanese citizens gathered for a rally in Tokyo's bustling Shinjuku district on Saturday evening. They demanded that Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi's government apologize to China for the incident in which a Self-Defense Forces officer forcibly entered the Chinese Embassy on Tuesday.

Participants held signs and chanted slogans such as "Apologize for the Self-Defense Forces officer's terrible act," "Take responsibility for the terrible incident," and "We apologize to China on behalf of the government."

The Chinese Embassy in Japan reported that a man who identified himself as an active Self-Defense Forces officer climbed over a fence and entered the embassy grounds on Tuesday morning, where he threatened to kill Chinese diplomats.

The Chinese side sent a serious representation to Japan and expressed a strong protest, demanding a responsible explanation of the incident.

So far, the Japanese government has only called the incident "regrettable." It has neither apologized nor announced any specific measures to hold those responsible accountable.

Pyongyang, March 29 (Xinhua) — Kim Jong Un, General Secretary of the Workers' Party of Korea and Chairman of State Affairs of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK), visited a major military training base to observe special forces exercises, the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) reported on Sunday.

At a base directly under the Operations Directorate of the General Staff of the Korean People's Army, he instructed the country's armed forces to ensure full readiness in line with the trends of modern warfare. "The more sweat we shed during peacetime exercises, the less blood we shed on the battlefield," Kim Jong-un declared, calling this statement an ironclad truth.

The North Korean leader outlined his plan for reorganizing the special forces and subsequent measures, KCNA reports.

The purpose of the exercises was to assess the physical and combat readiness of special forces personnel, the agency reported.

Ürümqi, March 29 (Xinhua) — In the first two months of 2026, 137,000 tons of fruits and vegetables were exported through the Horgos border crossing in northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, up 29.3 percent year-on-year, according to Horgos Customs data.

Every day, large numbers of refrigerated trucks carrying apples, oranges, lemons, tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, and other fruits and vegetables pass through the China-Kazakhstan "green channel" for rapid customs clearance of agricultural products and by-products. These fruits and vegetables are then shipped to Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Russia, and other countries.

According to Yu Huan, CEO of a local international trade company, the current season is peak for fruit and vegetable exports, and her company dispatches nearly 30 trucks daily with over 700 tons of fruits and vegetables. Produce harvested and cleared through customs in the morning can be delivered to markets in Almaty, Kazakhstan, the same day.

According to the Khorgos Customs Office, convenient customs clearance measures have been introduced, such as opening special windows and channels for fruit and vegetable exports, to reduce customs clearance time for vehicles carrying fruits and vegetables. Furthermore, customs clearance is carried out 24/7 to ensure the speedy completion of relevant procedures.

Lanzhou, March 29 (Xinhua) — During the Spring Festival (Chinese New Year) holidays this year, Jahan Saryev returned to her homeland of Turkmenistan with a suitcase full of exquisite cultural and creative goods dedicated to the Year of the Horse. Each of these dolls and ornaments was imbued with the distinct flavor of Chinese New Year.

"While handing out gifts, I shared the stories behind them with my family and friends. From the convenience of mobile payments to the diversity of cultural and creative goods, life in China is changing rapidly," shared she, who teaches at the Institute of International Education at Lanzhou Jiaotong University (Lanzhou, Gansu Province, Northwest China).

Jahan's connection to China goes back a long way. "I learned about Confucius, the Great Wall, and tea back in high school. That's when I became interested in China and wanted to visit the country in person," she said. She enrolled at Lanzhou Jiaotong University in 2008, becoming one of the first Turkmen students to study there.

Although China was still relatively new to Jahan at the time, she quickly adapted to life in Lanzhou thanks to the hospitality of the locals and the welcoming atmosphere at the university. Under Jahan's influence, her two younger sisters also enrolled at Lanzhou Jiaotong University. After completing their studies, they worked at the China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC) branch in Turkmenistan, maintaining close ties with China.

According to Jahan, the first Turkmen students to study in China, including herself, numbered only about a dozen. To date, Lanzhou Jiaotong University has trained over 200 graduates from Turkmenistan, who have developed strong friendships with China.

In 2019, Jahan became an international staff member at Lanzhou Jiaotong University, responsible for international student management. She also teaches Chinese to international students at the university's Institute of International Education, becoming the first international student at the university to receive a teaching qualification certificate for Chinese as a foreign language.

"For students from Central Asia and Russia, Russian is our connecting link, and for students from Europe and Africa, English unites us," said Jahan, noting that her knowledge of different languages and understanding of cultures allows her to build bridges of communication with the world in her classes.

"I live with international students at the university and interact with them often. I discovered that students starting to learn Chinese are shy about speaking it, so I offered to help them," she said. "I was an international student myself, so I understand this better than anyone."

In 2022, Jahan received the Dunhuang Prize from the Gansu Provincial People's Government, which recognizes foreign experts who have made outstanding contributions to the province's economic development, science and education, and human resource development.

“I’m very proud of it,” she noted.

In addition to teaching, Jahan also manages the Book House for Foreign Professionals at the Institute of International Education at Lanzhou Jiaotong University. Using this platform, she regularly hosts book club meetings, where faculty and students from different countries can share their reading experiences.

“I have lived and worked in Lanzhou for many years and have witnessed the city’s rapid development firsthand,” Jahan said, expressing hope that she could serve as a bridge between Turkmenistan and China and facilitate exchanges between the two countries in the fields of culture, education, and training. -0-

SHANGHAI, March 29 (Xinhua) — Construction of a floating deep-sea research rig, one of China's largest scientific research infrastructure projects capable of supporting scientific research in marine equipment, ocean resources and marine science, began Saturday in the eastern Chinese metropolis of Shanghai.

This facility is being built by Shanghai Jiaotong University and is scheduled for completion by 2030. It consists of three main systems, including the main platform, onboard laboratories, and onshore support infrastructure. The laboratories are designed to address such areas as maritime disaster management, meteorological observations and research, the physical environment of the underwater marine environment, and more.

The platform is a semi-submersible structure with two hulls, which allows for offshore testing of large-scale deep-sea equipment weighing up to 100 tons, as well as scientific research and experimental work at ocean depths of up to 10,000 meters.

The installation will be capable of long-term deployment in deep-sea mission areas to conduct interseasonal scientific observations and engineering tests. It can also be quickly mobilized and deployed, allowing for flexible changes in sea area for operations.

Once completed, the complex will provide a platform for full-scale offshore testing of deep-sea mining systems, key offshore equipment, and offshore oil and gas production equipment, and will accelerate the development of offshore resources.

It will also help reveal seasonal patterns in the evolution of marine ecosystems, unravel the mysteries of the origin and evolution of life, and is expected to improve the accuracy of typhoon forecasting and enhance disaster prevention and mitigation capabilities. -0-
