Astana, February 21 (Xinhua) — The snow leopard population in Kazakhstan's Ile-Alatau National Park has increased from 5-10 individuals in 1996 to 39 today, Kazinform reported on Saturday, citing the park's press service.

Significant increases were also recorded for other rare animal species. Brown bear numbers increased from 15-20 to 85, stone martens from 100 to 493, and golden eagles from 50 to 97. The population increase is due to increased conservation efforts and the expansion of the specially protected area.

The national park, established in 1996, has expanded from 164,450 to 200,160 hectares in 30 years. During this time, more than 5 million seedlings have been planted on over 1,600 hectares, and genetic reserves and a laboratory for the artificial propagation of rare plants, including the Sievers apple, have been established.

Vladivostok, February 21 (Xinhua) — Rescuers have located the crash site of a missing helicopter in the Romny District of Russia's Amur Region, the regional government reported on Saturday.

The bodies of three victims were found at the crash site. A criminal case has been opened for violating aircraft operating regulations resulting in the deaths of two or more people. Two causes of the accident are being investigated: a technical malfunction and pilot error.

The helicopter disappeared Thursday evening en route from a logging site 130 km from the village of Amaranka to the village of Romny. There were three people on board.

New York, February 20 (Xinhua) — U.S. President Donald Trump signed an executive order imposing a 10 percent tariff on imports from all countries. He announced the announcement on social media on Friday.

Beirut, February 21 /Xinhua/ – Eleven people were killed, including three Lebanese Hezbollah commanders, and eight others were injured in a series of Israeli airstrikes in eastern Lebanon on Friday, according to official sources and Lebanese security forces.

UNITED NATIONS, Feb. 20 (Xinhua) — The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) on Friday warned of a serious threat to displaced families in the Gaza Strip posed by open fires used for cooking in overcrowded temporary shelters.

The agency said families are cooking, sleeping and storing their belongings in small spaces, posing a threat not only to the community due to the risk of fire but also to the health of residents.

“Since November 2025, our partners have recorded at least 12 fires in these shelters,” OCHA reported. “In the 10 days leading up to February 17, humanitarian organizations provided shelter assistance to 85 families in Deir el-Balah and Khan Younis whose homes were damaged by fires in Gaza City.”

Washington, February 20 (Xinhua) — Hundreds of American troops have been evacuated from bases in Qatar and Bahrain amid growing concerns about a possible U.S. strike on Iran, The New York Times (NYT) reported on Friday, citing Pentagon officials.
