WASHINGTON, Feb. 22 (Xinhua) — A man was shot dead by the U.S. Secret Service and local police in the early hours of Sunday after attempting to break into the gated community of U.S. President Donald Trump's Mar-a-Lago residence in Palm Beach, Florida.

“On February 22, at approximately 1:30 a.m., a man between the ages of 20 and 24 was shot and killed by U.S. Secret Service agents and a Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Deputy after attempting to breach the secure perimeter at Mar-a-Lago,” the Secret Service said in a statement.

"This individual, whose identity is being withheld pending notification of next of kin, has been declared deceased. He was seen near the north gate of the Mar-a-Lago estate carrying what appeared to be a shotgun and a fuel can," the department clarified.

D. Trump is currently in Washington, D.C. No one under Secret Service protection was on the estate at the time of the incident.

U.S. Secret Service agents and a Palm Beach County Sheriff's deputy attempted to stop the man and fired shots during the confrontation. No Secret Service or local police officers were injured.

Details of the incident, including the man's background, his actions, possible motive, and the use of force by law enforcement, are currently under investigation by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the U.S. Secret Service, and the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office.

Bishkek, February 22 /Xinhua/ — In 2025, the Chinese economy demonstrated significant and, in many ways, exemplary resilience in advancing its course toward high-quality development. It continued to be a key driver of global economic growth, serving as a significant contributor and stabilizing element to the global economy. This was stated by Chinese Ambassador to Kyrgyzstan Liu Jiangping in an opinion piece recently published on the website of the Kyrgyz news agency AKIpress.

As the Chinese ambassador noted, China's economy demonstrated robust growth last year despite persistent negative trends in the global economy. The country's gross domestic product (GDP) exceeded 140 trillion yuan (approximately $20.26 trillion) for the first time, growing 5 percent year-on-year in comparable prices. Amid slowing global economic growth, China, which accounts for approximately 17 percent of the global economy, accounted for approximately 30 percent of global GDP growth, serving as a key and sustainable driver of global development.

Meanwhile, China's foreign trade turnover exceeded 45 trillion yuan for the first time, maintaining growth for the ninth consecutive year. China remained the top trading partner for more than 160 countries and regions, while import and export volumes increased with more than 190 countries and regions worldwide. High-tech exports grew by 13.2 percent year-on-year.

Liu Jiangping noted that in the past year, China's economy demonstrated high resilience, underwent dynamic renewal, and focused on high-quality development. The added value of the country's high-tech manufacturing industry among enterprises with annual revenues of 20 million yuan or more increased by 9.4 percent, and its share of total added value in the manufacturing industry reached 17.1 percent.

"The active development of technologies such as artificial intelligence, embodied artificial intelligence, and human-machine interaction ensured growth in the production of memory chips and servers by 22.8 percent and 12.6 percent, respectively," the diplomat said.

In 2025, final consumer spending contributed 52% to China's GDP growth. Retail sales of both household appliances and telecommunications equipment exceeded 1 trillion yuan. Online retail is growing rapidly: the annual express delivery volume reached 198.95 billion packages, equivalent to 141 packages per capita and representing a 13.6% year-on-year increase.

According to Liu Jianping, last year the Chinese economy demonstrated significant potential in harnessing both material and intellectual resources. China formed the world's largest energy supply system, as well as the largest clean power generation system. The installed capacity of green power generation accounts for approximately one-third of the global total. The total installed capacity of renewable energy sources, including wind and solar power, exceeded that of thermal power, while the installed capacity of new energy storage systems exceeded 100 million kW for the first time, accounting for over 40% of the global total.

No less remarkable is the level of scientific and technological investment. In 2025, China's R&D expenditure reached 3.9 trillion yuan, and its R&D intensity exceeded the average of OECD countries for the first time.

Liu Jiangping added that in 2025, China's economy demonstrated its inclusive and win-win nature. The country's import volume reached a record high of 18.48 trillion yuan. Increased imports were recorded with more than 130 countries and regions, with annual agricultural imports approaching 1.5 trillion yuan. Under the zero-tariff policy on 100 percent of goods, imports from 43 least developed countries that maintain diplomatic relations with China increased by 9 percent. The expected volume of transactions at the 8th China International Import Expo (CIIE) exceeded $80 billion.

"The stable development of China's economy creates additional opportunities for the socioeconomic development of the Kyrgyz Republic and contributes to the qualitative deepening of practical cooperation between China and Kyrgyzstan," the ambassador emphasized, adding that, according to Chinese customs data, bilateral trade volume reached $27.2 billion in 2025, an increase of 20 percent year-on-year and a new all-time high. Imports from Kyrgyzstan increased by 86 percent.

The China-Kyrgyzstan-Uzbekistan railway project is proceeding according to schedule. To date, the China-Kyrgyzstan-Uzbekistan Railway Company has completed procurement in Kyrgyzstan worth over $70 million, creating over 1,600 local jobs and providing vocational training for over 430 local employees. Meanwhile, a waste-to-energy project—a waste-to-energy plant in Bishkek—is scheduled to be commissioned in 2025, and a 100 MW solar power plant in Chui Oblast has been connected to the grid.

"Chinese companies, relying on financial and technological resources, continue to invest in the Kyrgyz economy, implementing projects based on the principles of mutual benefit and sustainable development," emphasized the head of the Chinese diplomatic mission in Kyrgyzstan.

Liu Jiangping noted that, going forward, China intends to consistently expand high-level opening-up, deepen international cooperation, and work with partners to address global challenges, including climate change and the slow recovery of the global economy.

“By further expanding its openness, China intends to promote the formation of a model of joint and mutually beneficial development, and through its own sustainable growth, to strengthen global economic stability, providing additional impetus to global development,” she concluded. –0–

Exclusive: The Spring Festival is becoming universal thanks to the universal human values behind it – Russian Sinologist

Moscow, February 22 (Xinhua) — The Spring Festival (Chunjie, the traditional Chinese New Year according to the lunar calendar) embodies universal values and embodies ideas such as cyclicality and unity. This gives it a truly universal resonance, which is recognized internationally. Konstantin Baraboshkin, head of the Chinese Philology Department at the Institute of Asian and African Studies at Lomonosov Moscow State University (IAAS MSU), stated this in a recent interview with Xinhua.

"At the end of 2024, the Spring Festival and the Chinese people's associated social practices were included in UNESCO's Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. This is truly global recognition, an acknowledgement of the festival's impact on the entire world," the scientist noted.

He believes that Spring Festival is, in many ways, the quintessence of Chinese culture. "Many of the traditions and customs of Spring Festival celebrations were formed a very, very long time ago," noted K. Baraboshkin. The sinologist recalled that, unlike many other cultures, Chinese culture has been continuous: the historical tradition, which originated many millennia ago, is still alive today.

K. Baraboshkin explained that Spring and Autumn was not so much a New Year in the sense of a calendar date, but rather a symbol of the end of one cycle and the beginning of a new one. Seasonal and ritual traditions developed around this in China, and over time, the holiday expanded beyond its sacred sphere and became increasingly popular.

The sinologist emphasized that the idea of unity is the most important aspect of the Spring Festival. He drew attention to the festival's multifaceted unifying power: from family reunions over the festive table to the unity of villages, provinces, and the entire country. "China is moving toward the 2049 goal of realizing the Chinese Dream of national rejuvenation, and I believe the Spring Festival is central to China. That's why it's celebrated on such a grand scale, because it underscores this unity," the Xinhua source noted.

K. Baraboshkin identified two layers of content in the Spring and Autumn Period: on the one hand, it is a unique legacy of Chinese culture; on the other, it contains universal human values, including the idea of unity, the idea of the end of the old and the beginning of the new.

"Among Russians, Spring Festival is still often perceived as exotic, but on the other hand, they recognize the common human values that underlie this holiday. It is precisely through these common human values that this holiday becomes universal. And that is why it has been recognized, including by UNESCO, as an intangible cultural heritage," the scientist concluded.

Budapest, February 22 (Xinhua) — Hungary will block the adoption of the 20th EU sanctions package against Russia until Ukraine resumes crude oil supplies to the country via the Druzhba pipeline. Hungarian Foreign and Trade Minister Péter Szijjártó announced this on Sunday.

In a video message published following a meeting of the Hungarian Energy Security Council, P. Szijjártó announced that Budapest would oppose the sanctions package at the meeting of EU foreign ministers in Brussels on February 23 and would continue to adhere to its position until oil transit to Hungary resumes.

"Until the Ukrainians resume oil transportation to Hungary, we will not allow decisions that are important to them to be made," the minister emphasized.

P. Szijjártó noted that Ukraine's decision earlier this week not to resume transit was "political blackmail" aimed at causing disruptions in fuel supplies and rising gasoline prices ahead of parliamentary elections in Hungary.

According to the minister, Hungary has already responded to the current situation by releasing part of its strategic crude oil reserves and ensuring replacement supplies via sea routes. –0–
