SEOUL, February 26 (Xinhua) — Republic of Korea (ROK) President Lee Jae-myung on Thursday called for continued efforts to reduce hostility in relations with North Korea, local media reported.

"The values we must strive for are peace and stability. We must break with the past, which led to war and confrontation," Lee Jae-myung said at a weekly meeting with presidential secretaries.

If the ROK tirelessly communicates, engages in dialogue, and cooperates to gradually build trust and empathy, then structural peace and stability will eventually be established on the /Korean/ Peninsula, he added. –0–

Rio de Janeiro, February 26 (Xinhua) — The death toll from torrential rains in the southeastern Brazilian state of Minas Gerais has risen to 46, with 21 more people missing, official figures were released Wednesday.

Forty of the victims lived in the hardest-hit city of Juiz de Fora, and six in the neighboring municipality of Ubá. Authorities say 19 people are missing in Juiz de Fora, and two more are missing in Ubá.

Around 3,000 people in Juiz de Fora and 26,000 in Ube were left homeless. In addition, 400 and 178 residents in these two towns, respectively, were evacuated due to the risk of landslides and flooding.

Authorities in the cities of Juiz de Fora and Matias Barbosa declared a state of public disaster to access federal resources and expedite the emergency response. Classes in all municipal schools were suspended.

Torrential rains, which intensified on Monday afternoon, caused rivers to overflow, leading to the closure of bridges and underpasses, as well as fallen trees and road closures. February has already become the wettest month on record in Juiz de Fora, with precipitation more than double the historical average.

Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva expressed solidarity with the victims and rescuers, and Minas Gerais Governor Romeu Zema declared three days of official mourning in the region. The country's Ministry of Defense is supporting emergency measures, deploying troops to clear debris, provide logistical assistance, and set up temporary shelters. Army helicopters are also participating in humanitarian operations.

New York, Feb. 26 (Xinhua) — The International Monetary Fund (IMF) forecast real GDP growth in the United States to be 2.6 percent in 2026, slightly higher than its January forecast of 2.4 percent, a report released Wednesday.

According to the report, after a slight decline in 2025, the US federal budget deficit is expected to exceed 6 percent of GDP in the next few years, while the federal debt-to-GDP ratio is projected to rise steadily over the medium term.

The IMF found that the tariff increase represents a negative shock to the US economy, expected to lead to a rise in the personal consumption price index by about 0.5 percent by early 2026 and a decline in output by about 0.5 percent.

The report notes that the rising public debt-to-GDP ratio, along with the rising short-term debt-to-GDP ratio, poses a growing risk to the stability of both the US and the global economy. –0–

TEHRAN, Feb. 26 (Xinhua) — Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi met with his Omani counterpart Badr al-Busaidi on Wednesday evening ahead of the third round of indirect Iran-US nuclear talks scheduled for Thursday in Geneva.

The meeting took place shortly after A. Araghchi's arrival in the Swiss city, marking the start of another round of indirect talks between Iran and the United States, according to a statement released by the Iranian Foreign Ministry on Thursday morning.

During the talks, A. Araghchi outlined Iran's position on the nuclear issue and the lifting of US sanctions, conveying Tehran's views and considerations to the Omani side.

He expressed gratitude to Oman for its role in facilitating the ongoing diplomatic process, stressing that the success of the negotiations depends on the seriousness of the other side's intentions and its refraining from contradictory actions and statements.

In turn, B. al-Busaidi confirmed Oman's readiness to continue supporting efforts to advance diplomatic progress. He also praised Iran's commitment to a diplomatic approach to the nuclear issue and expressed hope that the negotiations would yield satisfactory results.

The third round of talks is taking place amid heightened tensions between Iran and the United States over the US military buildup in West Asia. The first and second rounds took place earlier this month in Muscat and Geneva, respectively.

Washington, February 26 (Xinhua) — US Special Presidential Envoy Steven Witkoff said the Donald Trump administration is demanding that Iran agree to an indefinite term for any future nuclear agreement, the online portal Axios reported on Wednesday.

"We're assuming that a future agreement with Iran will not have an expiration date. Whether an agreement is reached or not, our position is this: you must behave accordingly for the rest of your lives," Axios quotes S. Witkoff as saying at a private meeting in Washington on Tuesday.

As the US special envoy noted, the two key issues in the current nuclear negotiations are Iran's ability to enrich uranium and the fate of its existing stockpiles of enriched uranium.

According to him, the negotiations are currently focused on Iran's nuclear program. However, if a deal is reached, the White House will seek continued negotiations on Iran's missile program and its support for rebel groups.

A new round of US-Iran talks is scheduled for Thursday in Geneva and is expected to focus on Iran's nuclear program, including uranium enrichment levels and sanctions relief. –0–

BEIJING, Feb. 26 (Xinhua) — Chinese courts have completed trials of two major criminal groups based in northern Myanmar and involved in telecommunications and internet fraud, the Supreme People's Court said Thursday.

As announced at a press conference organized by the Supreme Court, by the end of 2025, courts across China had heard more than 27,000 cases related to fraud in northern Myanmar at first instance, and more than 41,000 repatriated suspects had been convicted.

Trials against two of the four largest criminal groups—the Min and Bai families—have been fully completed. A total of 39 people were sentenced to life imprisonment or harsher punishments, including 16 death sentences. Both cross-border armed crime groups have thus been completely dismantled, dealing a serious blow to the criminal underworld both domestically and internationally.

Havana, February 25 (Xinhua) — Four people were killed and six others wounded in a shootout on a U.S.-flagged speedboat discovered in Cuban territorial waters on Wednesday morning, the Cuban Interior Ministry reported.

The ministry said in a statement that the vessel, with the US registration number FL7726SH and registered in Florida, was found illegally sailing approximately one nautical mile northeast of the El Pino Channel in the central province of Villa Clara.

When a ministry border patrol boat approached to identify the vessel, its passengers opened fire on Cuban soldiers. The attack wounded the Cuban vessel's commander, the report said.

As a result of the collision, four people on board the offending vessel were killed and six others were injured, according to the report. The injured were evacuated from the scene and received medical treatment.

The Ministry emphasized that Cuba reaffirms its commitment to the protection of its territorial waters, based on the principle that national defense is a fundamental pillar of the Cuban state in protecting its sovereignty and regional stability.

Competent authorities are continuing their investigation to fully clarify the circumstances of the incident. Further information about the identities of the offending vessel's passengers or possible motives for the intrusion has not yet been released. –0–
