BEIJING, March 1 (Xinhua) — China took a major step toward regulating its rapidly growing humanoid robotics industry on Saturday, unveiling the first national standards system covering the entire industrial chain and life cycle of humanoid robots and embodied artificial intelligence (AI).

The standards system, presented at the annual meeting on Humanoid Robots and Embodied Intelligence Standards (HEIS) in Beijing, consists of six key components: basic universality, brain-like and intelligent computing, limbs and components, complete machines and systems, application, and safety and ethics.

It was jointly developed by more than 120 research institutions, enterprises and industrial users under the leadership of the HEIS Technical Committee of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) of China.

A committee representative explained that the brain-like intelligent computing standards cover critical specifications for the “brain and cerebellum” of embodied intelligence and intelligent computing, governing the entire data lifecycle as well as the model training and deployment processes.

Application standards govern the development, operation, and maintenance of humanoid robots in various scenarios, while safety and ethical standards cover the entire industrial life cycle, ensuring compliance with technological evolution, the committee added.

The standardization system comes after China's humanoid robot industry showed significant growth in 2025, supported by mid- and long-term plans from central and local governments that regard it as a strategic sector.

According to the Ministry of Industrial Policy of the People's Republic of China, last year was considered the first year of mass production of humanoid robots in China: more than 140 domestic manufacturers released more than 330 different models.

The new standardization system is expected to become an important benchmark for this rapidly evolving industry, promoting high-quality development through standardized technical requirements and safety protocols. -0-

BEIJING, March 1 (Xinhua) — Two giant pandas died in Hangzhou, capital of east China's Zhejiang Province, on Feb. 9 and Feb. 10, according to an official statement released Saturday.

A joint statement from the Hangzhou Municipal Forestry and Water Resources Bureau, the China Giant Panda Conservation and Research Center, and the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding, capital of southwest China's Sichuan Province, said Banban, a panda from Hangzhou Safari Park, and Xiangguo, a panda from Hangzhou Zoo, died of illness on February 9 and 10, respectively, despite receiving medical treatment.

Autopsies revealed that Banban died of intestinal obstruction, and Xiangguo of intestinal volvulus. Both conditions led to multiple organ failure. According to the report, the fatality rate for these acute abdominal diseases in giant pandas reaches 60% and 100%, respectively, making them among the most severe and fatal diseases affecting pandas in captivity.

Authorities announced an investigation at both zoological institutions. The panda enclosures were closed for cleaning, effective immediately on Saturday.

To ensure the health of the remaining giant pandas in Hangzhou, Yiyi and Chunsheng, Yiyi will be returned to the China Conservation and Research Center for the Giant Panda, and Chunsheng will be returned to the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding. -0-

BEIJING, Feb. 28 (Xinhua) — China's Defense Ministry on Saturday accused Japan of reckless moves toward neo-militarism and called on the international community to remain highly vigilant.

These statements were made by Chinese Defense Ministry spokesman Zhang Xiaogang in response to the Japanese government's plans to revise three national security documents this year and accelerate discussions on amendments to the principles governing arms exports.

According to Zhang Xiaogang, China conducted appropriate military operations to protect its territorial sovereignty and security interests. These actions are fully consistent with both domestic and international law and are absolutely fair and justifiable, he noted.

Touching on Japan's history of aggression, Zhang Xiaogang stated that the past has not been forgotten. He accused Japan of previously using so-called "existential crises" as a pretext for waging foreign wars of aggression. As a result, Japan has committed monstrous crimes against its Asian neighbors and the entire world.

Japan's right-wing forces, he added, are reviving similar rhetoric about so-called external threats in an attempt to justify military expansion and pursue hidden political goals.

Zhang Xiaogang called on the international community to remain highly vigilant, resolutely oppose Japan's reckless moves toward neo-militarism, and uphold the results of the victory in World War II and the post-war international order.

Japan should not take the wrong path or turn back the wheel of history. Otherwise, it will lead to a quicker and more serious defeat, warned a Chinese Defense Ministry official. -0-

BEIJING, Feb. 28 (Xinhua) — Chinese Defense Ministry spokesman Zhang Xiaogang warned Saturday that China's armed forces are on high alert to counter any attempt to stir up trouble in the South China Sea.

Zhao Xiaogang made the statement while commenting at the media's request on the so-called "joint patrol" recently conducted by the Philippines, the United States, Japan and Australia in the airspace and sea area near China's Huangyan Island.

Zhang Xiaogang criticized the United States and other extra-regional states for saber-rattling in the South China Sea, saying these countries are the source of tension in the region.

The agency's representative added that the Philippines constantly provokes and infringes on China's rights, harming the common interests of countries in the region. According to him, it is nothing more than a troublemaker and a disturber of the peace.

"China has indisputable sovereignty and jurisdiction over the islands in the South China Sea and adjacent waters. China's necessary measures to protect its sovereignty and interests are lawful, professional, restrained, and indisputable," Zhang Xiaogang noted.

He said the Chinese military will always be on high alert to ensure that any attempts to disturb the peace in the South China Sea are doomed to failure and to maintain peace and stability in the region. -0-
