UNITED NATIONS, March 2 (Xinhua) — The UN Security Council "must act decisively, clearly and unequivocally" against the military strikes launched by the United States and Israel against Iran, the Islamic Republic's permanent representative to the UN, Amir Saeed Iravani, said on Monday.
In a press statement, A.S. Iravani said that the US, in full coordination with Israel, launched a “second deliberate and unprovoked” military attack on Iran, which is a “deliberate act of aggression.”
Noting that the US and Israel had targeted Iran's Supreme Leader and many senior military officials, A.S. Iravani said that attacking the highest official of a sovereign UN member state was "a flagrant violation of international law and a direct assault on sovereign equality."
"This behavior has put the entire international system at risk," he said.
The diplomat also accused the US and Israel of "deliberately targeting civilians and civilian infrastructure" leading to the death of 165 schoolgirls in Iran's southern Hormozgan province, saying "these actions constitute an act of aggression," a "war crime," and a "crime against humanity."
"The UN cannot remain silent. Responsibility is not a matter of choice," said A.S. Iravani, adding that "the Security Council must act decisively, clearly, and unequivocally."
He stressed that there is no immediate threat from Iran, its nuclear program is exclusively peaceful in nature, and the country is conducting serious diplomatic negotiations.
However, "for the second time, the United States chose force over diplomacy and violated the UN Charter. There are no legal grounds to justify this attack," he said.
According to him, Iran is exercising its inherent right to self-defense in accordance with Article 51 of the UN Charter and its response is lawful, necessary and proportionate, aimed only at the military objectives of hostile forces.
"Iran does not seek war. Iran does not seek escalation, but it will not compromise its sovereignty," he emphasized.
