BEIJING, March 31 (Xinhua) — China's manufacturing and non-manufacturing sectors both expanded in March, official data showed on Tuesday, signaling a significant upturn in economic activity.

China's manufacturing purchasing managers' index (PMI) stood at 50.4 in March 2026, up 1.4 percentage points from the previous month, according to data released Tuesday by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS).

Ho Lihui, a statistician at the National Statistical Office, attributed the increase to the accelerated resumption of work and production at enterprises after the Spring Festival holidays, as well as increased market activity.

The manufacturing sector saw growth in both production and demand. The production and new orders sub-indices were 51.4 and 51.6, respectively, up 1.8 and 3 percentage points compared to the previous month. Notably, the sub-indices for agriculture and food processing, as well as non-ferrous metal smelting and rolling, exceeded 55.

Thanks to the recovery in production and demand, the purchase volume sub-index rose to 50.9, up 2.7 percentage points compared to the previous month.

Large enterprises demonstrated steady growth, their PMI amounted to 51.6, which is 0.1 percentage points higher month-on-month, while the PMI indicators of medium and small enterprises rose to 49 and 49.3, respectively, an increase of 1.5 and 4.5 percentage points.

Data from the National Survey of Commerce on Tuesday also showed that China's non-manufacturing purchasing managers' index (PMI) stood at 50.1 in March, up 0.6 percentage points from February. -0-

Shenzhen, March 31 (Xinhua) — A direct passenger flight from Shenzhen Bao'an International Airport in southern China's Guangdong Province to Tashkent, the capital of Uzbekistan, was launched on Monday, marking the first nonstop passenger service from the metropolis to Central Asia.

The airport administration said the route, operated by Uzbekistan Airways, is its first new international route launched this year.

The flight will operate once a week on Mondays: the plane will depart Tashkent at 1:20 local time and arrive in Shenzhen at 7:40 Beijing time, and the return flight will depart Shenzhen at 9:10 Beijing time and arrive in Tashkent at 16:20 local time.

The launch of the new direct air link aims to deepen cooperation between China and Uzbekistan within the framework of the Belt and Road Initiative, as well as to foster closer exchanges in trade, investment, energy, infrastructure, and people-to-people exchanges.

Airport officials said the route would facilitate cross-border travel and business connections, and provide Shenzhen firms with more direct access to the Central Asian market.

With the launch of this flight, Bao'an Airport is now connected by air with 42 cities in 23 Belt and Road countries. -0-

Washington, March 30 (Xinhua) — US President Donald Trump "would be very interested" in calling on Arab countries to help cover the costs of the ongoing US-Israeli war against Iran, White House Press Secretary Caroline Leavitt said at a briefing on Monday.

"I'm not going to get ahead of him [D. Trump] on this. But, of course, it's an idea that I know he has, and it's something I think you'll hear more about from him," she said.

Earlier in March, Pentagon officials told the US Congress that the Trump administration spent more than $11.3 billion in the first six days of the war against Iran.

That figure doesn't include battle damage and replacement costs, which are likely to cost the Pentagon an estimated $1.4 billion to $2.9 billion in the first three weeks of the war, the Wall Street Journal reported, citing Elaine McCusker, a former Defense Department budget specialist who tracked those costs for the American Enterprise Institute.

TAIPEI, March 31 (Xinhua) — China's Kuomintang Party Chairwoman Zheng Liwen said Monday that her upcoming trip to the mainland will highlight the shared hope for peace.

Zheng Liwen will lead a delegation that will visit mainland China from April 7 to 12, with stops in Jiangsu Province and the cities of Shanghai and Beijing.

The visit reflects the high expectations of most Taiwanese people, she said at a press conference in Taipei.

“We have a choice,” she said. “For the sake of both sides of the Taiwan Strait, regional stability, and the well-being of the next generation, we must firmly follow the path of peace.”

Zheng Liwen said her visit, like previous visits to the mainland by former Kuomintang chairmen Lien Chan and Ma Ying-jeou, is based on the same political principles – adherence to the 1992 Consensus and opposition to “Taiwan independence.”

Based on this, Zheng Liwen noted that the Kuomintang is striving to prove to the island's residents and the world that both sides of the strait should not be exposed to danger and armed conflict, and that both sides can jointly pave the way to peace through their own wisdom and efforts.

The Kuomintang Party Chairperson noted that the recent forum between the Communist Party of China and the Kuomintang think tanks, held in early February, responded to the high expectations of representatives from all sectors in Taiwan for the normalization of cross-Straits relations, promoting cooperation on issues such as climate change, energy conservation, and artificial intelligence.

Zheng Liwen expressed hope that the upcoming visit will demonstrate concern for Taiwan's industrial development and for Taiwanese entrepreneurs and businesses operating in mainland China. Furthermore, the visit will explore further opportunities for cross-strait exchanges and cooperation on various promising topics.

Lake Poyang and Lake Victoria are the largest freshwater lakes in China and Africa, respectively. Lake Victoria is one of the sources of the Nile, and Lake Poyang is an important lake connected to the Yangtze River by a channel. These two lakes not only support tens of millions of people but also serve as habitats for numerous species of wildlife.

In recent years, with the support of the Global South-South Development Centre and the UN Office for South-South Cooperation's Perez-Guerrero Trust Fund, these two lakes, members of the International Network of Living Lakes, have initiated a collaboration that has been recognized by the UN as a model example of South-South cooperation. Jiangxi Province, home to Lake Poyang, collaborates with regions in countries surrounding Lake Victoria, such as Kenya and Tanzania. This collaboration includes training courses for specialists from these countries, promoting the construction of biogas plants that convert waste into clean energy, and disseminating Lake Poyang management practices. This provides new impetus for the joint promotion of environmentally friendly modernization in China and Africa.
