LHASA, July 11 (Xinhua) — A section of National Highway No. 216 leading to the Jilong Port of southwest China's Xizang Autonomous Region reopened on Friday after being damaged by a mudslide on Tuesday, local authorities said.

The affected area was urgently restored, which provided reliable support for the movement of people and the transportation of goods.

Emergency response crews immediately began repair work, using methods such as gravel backfilling to restore access. Authorities said 24-hour monitoring and maintenance would continue on the section of road to ensure safety and stability.

A mudslide occurred near the Keelung checkpoint on the China-Nepal border at 5:46 a.m. Tuesday. As of Wednesday, more than 300 people, including many Nepalese, had been safely evacuated. -0-

KUALA LUMPUR, July 11 (Xinhua) — Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, and Cambodian Vice Premier and Foreign Minister Prak Sokhon met here on Thursday. They pledged to further strengthen bilateral ties and cooperation based on mutual benefit.

Wang Yi said that China-Cambodia friendship has stood the test of international vicissitudes and is as strong as a rock.

According to him, in April this year, the leaders of the two countries jointly announced the establishment of an all-weather China-Cambodia community with a shared future in the new era.

Wang Yi said China and Cambodia should strengthen cooperation under the three global initiatives put forward by China, expand the bilateral cooperation mechanism "Diamond Hexagon", implement the cooperation plans "Industrial Development Corridor" and "Fish and Rice Corridor", and promote the implementation of early impact projects.

He expressed hope that the two sides will take more powerful and effective measures to resolutely suppress cross-border crimes such as online gambling, counterfeiting and smuggling, and ensure the security of the two peoples.

Wang Yi stressed that the United States' imposition of high tariffs on Cambodia and other Southeast Asian countries is an attempt to deprive these countries of their legitimate right to development.

“I am confident that Southeast Asian countries are capable of handling difficult situations, adhering to principled positions and protecting their own interests and the common interests of all parties,” he said.

P. Sokhon said China is Cambodia's most reliable friend. The two leaders have decided to build an all-weather Cambodia-China community with a shared future in the new era, he said, adding that Cambodia firmly supports the three global initiatives put forward by China.

The Foreign Minister thanked China for its selfless assistance in the socio-economic development of Cambodia.

P. Sokhon added that Cambodia is willing to implement the consensus reached by the leaders of the two countries, deepen practical cooperation in trade, infrastructure and other areas, and jointly combat transnational crimes such as online gambling and fraud.

He also thanked China for granting Cambodia a zero tariff regime for 100 percent of tariffed goods. According to the foreign minister, this is a move by a friend and brother that greatly helps Cambodia and is in sharp contrast to the 36 percent tariff imposed by the United States.

P. Sokhon said Cambodia is ready to resolve differences with the United States through negotiations, but will not compromise its own principles and interests or those of third parties.

P. Sokhon also briefed Wang Yi on the situation on the Cambodia-Thai border. The Chinese minister said that although the positions of Cambodia and Thailand are different, both sides are willing to control the situation and resolve it. He said that Cambodia and Thailand are neighbors that cannot be separated.

"I believe they can properly handle this issue in the spirit of caring for peace and good-neighborliness," Wang said. "China will maintain an impartial and fair position, respond to the needs of parties concerned and play a constructive role in this regard," he added. -0-

BEIJING, July 11 (Xinhua) — The Chinese model is a model of peace, development and respect for civilizational diversity, Chairman of the People's Party of Kazakhstan Yermukhamet Yertysbayev told Xinhua on Friday on the sidelines of the ministerial meeting of the Global Dialogue of Civilizations.

"Chinese policy is diametrically different from the policy of Western countries. The West sells or imposes on other countries not cooperation, but subordination and protection of its own interests at their expense. China advocates equal partnership, common development and prosperity," said E. Yertysbayev, noting that this is the wisdom of a great civilization and great culture that has been around for thousands of years.

E. Yertysbayev stated that, given the events that have taken place since the end of the 20th century, there is something to compare with. “China is building roads, ports, universities and cultural centers… China is bringing new technologies and education to other countries, not provocations and color revolutions. Instead of sanctions – investments. Instead of ultimatums – partnership. Instead of ideological dictate – acceptance of the diversity of cultures of different ethnic groups,” he explained.

The politician cited the Belt and Road Initiative as an example, which, according to him, is a gigantic mega-project of the 21st century. “I would like to note that the main thing here is not even the economic component, but the new, amazing and stunning ethical side of the project’s implementation,” he emphasized.

As noted by E. Yertysbayev, the international transport corridor that China is creating is a full-fledged economic foundation for an absolutely new model of international cooperation and development. “Each partner country is a link in the general system, part of a single practical mechanism “Belt and Road”, working for the benefit of all participating states,” he said.

The agency's interlocutor is convinced that, in addition to the economy, the Belt and Road initiative makes a huge contribution to the dialogue and rapprochement of civilizations from Beijing to the Middle East, from the Yellow Sea in China to the Mediterranean Sea in Europe. "This is not just an economic corridor, but a civilizational bridge connecting the East and West, North and South. This is a dialogue of cultures, and not the imposition of foreign conditions," Yertysbayev emphasized.

"Our generation must pass a maturity test. Will we be able to build a world where every nation is respected? Will we be able to understand and accept others' cultures while preserving our own? Will we be able to create a world of equal civilizations together? The People's Republic of China is showing us a worthy example of this," he concluded.

The Ministerial Meeting of the Global Dialogue of Civilizations on “Preserving the Diversity of Human Civilizations for World Peace and Development” is being held in Beijing on July 10-11. The event is attended by over 600 guests from about 140 countries and territories. –0–

BEIJING, July 11 (Xinhua) — The Xinhua Institute, a high-level national think tank affiliated with the Xinhua News Agency, on Friday released a report on China's experience in poverty reduction.

The document, titled “Striving for a Better Life for the People: China’s Practical and Theoretical Innovations in Consolidating and Expanding Achievements in Intensive Poverty Alleviation,” was simultaneously released in Chinese and English for worldwide distribution.

It describes the fundamental principles of the theory of poverty alleviation with Chinese characteristics, which becomes a key intellectual asset for the progress of human civilization.

The report systematizes fundamental guiding principles in five aspects: firm leadership by the Communist Party of China as the basic guarantee; putting the people's interests first as the supreme value; pooling common efforts as the distinguishing feature; self-reliance and self-strengthening as the fundamental principle; and step-by-step advancement as the key strategy.

The theoretical basis of poverty alleviation management in China has been continuously enriched, and the methodological approaches have been consistently refined through years of practical exploration and empirical verification. This includes the implementation of targeted poverty alleviation strategies and the effective combination of work to consolidate the achievements of poverty alleviation with the implementation of the rural revitalization program.

“This theoretical system is not only deeply rooted in China’s national reality, but also absorbs global experience and wisdom in poverty reduction, elevating local experience to the level of global value,” the report emphasizes.

As noted in the document, this system acknowledges the multiplicity of development paths and offers the global community, especially developing countries, replicable, scalable and transformable solutions in the field of governance. -0-

BEIJING, July 11 (Xinhua) — Tariffs should not be used as a tool to coerce or intimidate other countries, or to interfere in the internal affairs of other countries, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning said Friday.

The diplomat thus commented at the latest departmental press conference, at the request of journalists, on the information that the United States recently announced the introduction of duties of up to 50 percent on goods from Brazil from August 1, condemning Brazil for “injustice” in trade with the United States and demanding that Brazil immediately stop political “persecution” within the country.

“Sovereign equality and non-interference in internal affairs are important principles of the UN Charter and fundamental norms governing international relations,” the Chinese Foreign Ministry representative emphasized. -0-

SAO PAULO, July 11 (Xinhua) — The United States' imposition of 50 percent tariffs on Brazilian imports could trigger the country's economic reciprocity law, President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva said on Thursday.

If the 50 percent tariff goes into effect on August 1, the Brazilian government will invoke the provisions of the law while maintaining the possibility of negotiations, the president added.

"But if the negotiations fail, the law on economic reciprocity will be invoked. If he /D. Trump/ takes 50 percent from us, we will also take 50 percent from him," the Brazilian president said in an interview with the local television channel RecordTV.

For the past 15 years, Brazil has had a trade deficit with the United States, its second-largest trading partner, he said. –0–

OTTAWA, July 11 (Xinhua) — Canada will continue trade talks with the United States until a new deadline of Aug. 1, Prime Minister Mark Carney said Thursday.

During the current trade negotiations with the United States, the Canadian government has stood firm in protecting the interests of workers and businesses, he wrote on social media. “We will continue to do so as we work through the new August 1 deadline,” the politician added.

Canada has made significant progress in combating the spread of fentanyl in North America, Carney said. Ottawa is committed to continuing to work with Washington to save lives and protect communities in both countries, the Canadian prime minister said.

“We are building a strong Canada. The federal government, provinces and territories are making significant progress in building a unified Canadian economy,” the premier said, adding that Canada must strengthen its trading partnerships around the world.

US President Donald Trump announced earlier on Thursday that he would impose a 35 percent tariff on imports from Canada starting August 1.

D. Trump published a letter addressed to M. Carney on his own social network Truth Social, in which he criticized Canada for retaliatory measures against previous American tariffs.

The American leader noted that the new tariff was imposed because of the flow of fentanyl from Canada to the United States, as well as alleged unfair trade practices. The head of the White House said he would consider adjusting the tariff if Canada cooperated with the United States to stop fentanyl smuggling.

The Trump administration previously imposed a 25 percent tariff on Canadian goods, but later made an exception for products covered by the U.S.-Canada-Mexico trade agreement. –0–

KUALA LUMPUR, July 11 (Xinhua) — China and Thailand celebrate the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties in 2025, and China is willing to work with Thailand to advance the building of a community with a shared future to a higher level, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, said during talks with Thai Foreign Minister Marit Sangyampong on the sidelines of the China-ASEAN Foreign Ministers' Meeting here on Thursday.

Wang Yi told his interlocutor that China is ready to play a constructive role in promoting dialogue and de-escalating border tensions between Thailand and Cambodia.

The construction of a China-Thailand community with a shared future continues to advance. This year marks the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations, the “golden jubilee of China-Thailand friendship,” he said.

China firmly supports Thailand in pursuing a development path suited to its national conditions and always gives priority to China-Thailand ties in its diplomatic relations with neighbors, Wang said. China is willing to work with Thailand to bring the building of a community with a shared future to a higher and more meaningful level, he added.

The Chinese minister advocated closer alignment of development strategies and further integration of interests between the two sides, proposing to build new growth engines in areas such as the digital economy, artificial intelligence, cross-border e-commerce and green development to support the modernization efforts of both countries. He also called for accelerating the construction of the China-Thailand railway to give full play to the stimulating effect of model large-scale projects and realize the vision of interconnected development among China, Laos and Thailand.

On global trade, Wang Yi stressed that the US had undermined the free trade system and disrupted global production and supply chains by imposing tariffs unilaterally. He expressed confidence that Thailand and other ASEAN countries would protect their legitimate interests and oppose unilateralism, power politics and bullying. Beijing intends to sign the China-ASEAN Free Trade Area 3.0 protocol by the end of the year to expand the common market and demonstrate joint support for WTO rules and the multilateral trading system through concrete actions, the minister added.

Touching upon the border issue between Thailand and Cambodia, Wang Yi noted that both countries are good neighbors and friends of China. He expressed hope that the parties will resolve the issue through dialogue and consultations in good faith, striving to de-escalate tensions and restore stability as soon as possible. China will adhere to an objective and impartial position and play a constructive role in promoting peaceful relations between the two countries, the Foreign Minister added.

In turn, M. Sangyampong said that China is a reliable friend of Thailand. Over the 50 years since the establishment of diplomatic relations, the countries have maintained mutual trust and respected each other's core interests, he stressed. The principle of "Thailand and China are as close as one family" has stood the test of time, and the construction of a Thai-Chinese community with a common destiny continues to bear rich fruit, the minister added.

Thailand firmly adheres to the one-China principle and looks forward to strengthening high-level exchanges and practical cooperation in the areas of connectivity, trade, agriculture and combating transnational crime, Sangyampong said.

Bangkok firmly supports multilateralism and the multilateral trading system and calls for an early restoration of normal trading order, he said.

Border and territorial issues should not be resolved by force, the Foreign Minister stressed, expressing gratitude to China for its objective and balanced position on disputes, as well as for its mediation role and efforts to promote dialogue. Thailand is ready to resolve disputes with Cambodia through bilateral channels in the spirit of good neighborliness and goodwill, M. Sangyamphong said. –0–
