Moscow, July 24 (Xinhua) — Russia did not expect a breakthrough during the latest round of talks with Ukraine in Istanbul, Russian presidential press secretary Dmitry Peskov said on Thursday, assessing the results of the talks between the two countries' delegations held the day before.

"We did not expect a breakthrough. A breakthrough is unlikely," TASS quotes him as saying.

As D. Peskov noted, Russia presented concrete and constructive proposals for settling the Ukrainian conflict at the negotiations. “The agenda is constructive, concrete and aimed specifically at substantive work that can lead to achieving concrete results,” he said.

The Kremlin spokesman praised the agreements reached on the exchange of citizens and bodies of fallen soldiers. “The continuation of the return of bodies of fallen soldiers is an extremely important humanitarian aspect, which, from our point of view, should be on the agenda,” he noted.

At the same time, D. Peskov emphasized that the head of the Russian delegation, Vladimir Medinsky, confirmed the diametrically opposed approaches of the parties to the draft memorandums on the ceasefire following the third round. –0–

BEIJING, July 24 (Xinhua) — During the 14th Five-Year Plan period (2021-2025), Chinese authorities have taken a series of measures to ensure reasonable prices for medicines, Shi Zihai, deputy head of the National Medical Security Administration (NMSA), said on Thursday.

Shi Zihai presented the measures at a press conference held by the State Council Information Office.

According to him, since 2018, the country has conducted ten rounds of centralized procurement of medicines, covering 435 types of drugs. The centralized procurement program has become an effective means of curbing the overpricing of medicines, significantly alleviating the burden of the population in obtaining medicines, and also improving their quality and availability.

GUMO has also actively examined cases of improper pricing of medicines and called on the relevant pharmaceutical companies to correct their practices. To date, it has sent notices to 566 companies, requiring them to adjust prices for 726 medicines of different forms and specifications.

In addition, Shi Zihai said that measures have been taken to regulate prices of medicines both online and in regular pharmacies.

The official noted that some pharmaceutical companies, abusing their right to independent pricing, violated market order using methods such as offering kickbacks, monopolizing the market and controlling sales.

He assured that GUMO firmly supports and encourages medical innovation and high-quality development, respects the right of enterprises to independently set prices, and more effectively plays its role in managing drug pricing and maintaining normal market order. -0-

BEIJING, July 24 (Xinhua) — Chinese President Xi Jinping said on Thursday that China and the European Union (EU) should adhere to openness and cooperation and properly handle differences.

Xi Jinping made the announcement during a meeting with European Council President António Costa and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, who are in Beijing to attend the 25th China-EU leaders' meeting.

History and reality show that interdependence is not a risk and the intertwining of interests is not a threat, Xi Jinping said, noting that competitiveness cannot be enhanced by “erecting walls and creating barriers” – attempts to decouple and break chains can only lead to self-isolation.

The head of state stressed that “reducing dependence” should not lead to a reduction in cooperation between China and the EU. Bilateral trade and economic relations, which are essentially complementary and mutually beneficial, should and can achieve dynamic equilibrium through development, Xi Jinping said.

According to him, China's high-quality development and opening up have opened up new opportunities and new horizons for China-EU cooperation. Xi Jinping called on both sides to deepen green and digital partnerships and promote mutual investment cooperation.

Xi Jinping expressed hope that the EU will keep its trade and investment markets open, exercise restraint in using restrictive trade and economic instruments, and create a favorable business environment for Chinese enterprises willing to invest and do business in the EU. -0-

YANGON, July 24 (Xinhua) — Three people are missing after a motorboat capsized on a river in Myanmar's Yangon, a local rescue official said Thursday.

"Three members of our rescue team went to the scene this morning and carried out the operation in coordination with other organizations," Lin Latt, a spokesman for the rescue organization, told Xinhua on Thursday.

The speedboat was travelling between Botahtaung Jetty in Botahtaung Township and Thamada Beach in Dala Township in Yangon Region when the incident occurred at around 7:00 a.m. Thursday local time, he said.

Since it is the rainy season, strong winds and waves on the river caused the boat to capsize, the spokesman said, adding that the search for the missing people was being hampered by the difficult weather conditions.

According to him, there were 11 people on board the boat at the time of the incident, and eight of them were rescued. –0–
