BEIJING, July 31 (Xinhua) — The death toll from recent heavy rainfall in Beijing has risen to 44, with nine people still missing, city authorities said at a press conference on Thursday.

Beijing Vice Mayor Xia Linmao said 31 people died at a care center for the elderly in Taishitun Township, Miyun District.

The recent flooding in Beijing affected more than 300,000 residents and damaged about 24,000 homes. Heavy rainfall mainly hit the northern mountainous areas, where the infrastructure of 40 townships and townships and 312 administrative villages was seriously damaged.

According to Xia Linmao, heavy rains triggered flash floods of devastating force, aggravated by a sharp increase in water inflow from upper rivers.

Yerevan, July 31 /Xinhua/ — The opening of the exhibition “Mountains and Rivers of China” took place at the Yerevan History Museum on Thursday. It features 40 unique works by one of the most prominent representatives of the new Chinese xylography of the 20th century, Shao Keping.

Shao Keping's works, through the power of visual storytelling, allow visitors to experience the depth and vitality of Chinese artistic heritage.

The exhibition is organized in cooperation with the Ningbo Museum in China, in accordance with a memorandum signed last year, and will run until September 24. Visitors were greeted in a video message by Zhang Liang, director of the Ningbo Museum, who noted that the current event is not only an important step in promoting the Belt and Road Initiative, but also a successful example of cultural interaction.

BEIJING, July 31 (Xinhua) — China will work with all member states of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) to finalize preparations for the SCO summit in northern China's Tianjin, Foreign Ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun said Thursday.

He made the statement at a regular press briefing when asked to talk about the work done by China as the current chair of the SCO and the preparations for the organization's Tianjin summit.

As the official representative noted, since assuming the SCO chairmanship in July last year, China has been acting under the motto of “Promoting the Shanghai Spirit: The SCO in Action” and has made tangible progress in its work as the chair country.

YANGON, July 31 (Xinhua) — Myanmar's National Defence and Security Council on Thursday declared martial law in 63 townships across the country shortly after imposing a state of emergency there, state broadcaster Myanmar Radio Television reported.

According to the report, in accordance with the martial law decree, the National Defense and Security Council transferred executive and judicial functions in the townships to the commander-in-chief of the country's armed forces.

It is noted that martial law is intended to ensure the restoration of normal administrative conditions, peace and the rule of law in the villages.

The areas under martial law include five townships in Kachin State, three in Kayah State, two in Karen State, seven in Chin State, nine in Sagaing State, five in Magway State, three in Mandalay State, 14 in Rakhine State and 15 in Shan State, the broadcaster said.

GENEVA, July 31 (Xinhua) — Zhao Leji, chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress of China, called for jointly promoting the high-level development of the China-Switzerland innovative strategic partnership. He made the call during an official goodwill visit to Switzerland from July 28 to 31.

As Zhao Leji noted during talks with Maja Riniker, President of the National Council of the Federal Assembly (lower house of parliament) of Switzerland, and Andrea Caroni, President of the Council of States of the Federal Assembly (upper house of parliament) of Switzerland, Switzerland became one of the first Western countries to establish diplomatic relations with the People's Republic of China.

Tbilisi, July 31 (Xinhua) — Georgia and Turkey have confirmed their readiness for a full-scale launch of cargo transportation on the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars railway, the Georgian Ministry of Economy and Sustainable Development reported on Thursday after a meeting in Tbilisi between Minister of Economy Mariam Kvrivishvili and Turkish Minister of Transport and Infrastructure Abdulkadir Uraloglu.

The parties discussed the development of regional transport infrastructure, including the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars railway line, the East-West highway, the Anaklia deep-water port and the new international airport in Tbilisi.

Moscow, July 31 /Xinhua/ — Given the growing flow of goods to and from Laos, Russia intends to open a railway connection with that country via China, Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Thursday following talks with Lao President Thongloun Sisoulith.

The Russian leader pointed out that trade between Russia and Laos is currently actively developing. “Last year, trade turnover increased by 65 percent, and this year its growth rate was about 20 percent,” V. Putin noted.
