WASHINGTON, Aug. 7 (Xinhua) — U.S. President Donald Trump said on Wednesday he plans to impose 100 percent tariffs on imported semiconductors.

"We will impose tariffs of approximately 100 percent on chips and semiconductors. But if you build in the United States of America, you will not have to pay," he told reporters at the White House.

Along with Apple CEO Tim Cook, the American president also announced that Apple plans to invest an additional $100 billion in the United States.

Apple said in a press release that the new commitment will significantly increase its investment in the U.S., which will total $600 billion over the next four years.

Apple also announced the American Manufacturing Program, which will increase its investments across America and encourage global companies to manufacture even more critical components in the United States.

It's Apple's latest pledge to bring more of its supply chain and advanced manufacturing back to the United States and avoid tariffs on its iPhones, local media reported on Wednesday.

In May, Trump threatened Apple and other phone makers with a 25 percent tariff on products made outside the United States. –0–

BEIJING, Aug. 7 (Xinhua) — As consumers in Central Asia increasingly recognize Chinese-made artificial turf, more domestic companies in the industry are entering the region's markets, the Zhongguo Guomen Shibao newspaper, affiliated with the General Administration of Customs, reported.

Shenghe Plastic Products Co., Ltd., based in Yantai City, Shandong Province, east China, is busily preparing to fulfill its sixth order of artificial turf this year, which will also be shipped to the Central Asian region. The 15,000-square-meter turf, which recently passed tests for compression resistance, wear resistance, fire resistance and weather resistance, will be exported to Kazakhstan via the China-Europe freight train and used to build football pitches.

The above enterprise has a complete production chain of its own development, from artificial grass fiber to the final product. Its product range covers various types of artificial grass for various application scenarios, including football pitch construction, commercial landscaping and golf driving ranges. They are sold to more than 30 countries and regions around the world.

“The most popular artificial turf is for mini-football, which is played by teams of five people. The maximum amount of our single order exceeded 32 thousand US dollars,” said the company’s foreign trade manager Jing Xiangwei.

In line with the requirements for sports facilities in Central Asian countries, the company has specifically developed artificial grass with higher weather and wear resistance, far surpassing conventional lawns in terms of service life and providing a reliable surface for sports and leisure events, he noted.

In Wen'an County, Langfang City, Hebei Province (North China), artificial grass has become one of the main export products of local production. It is sold in many countries and regions around the world, including Poland and Costa Rica.

“This batch of artificial grass worth 210,000 yuan (US$29,430) will be sent to Uzbekistan in the near future,” said Wang Qian, a representative of the local Minjun company. Since the beginning of this year, the company has exported artificial grass of its own production to Uzbekistan for a total of over 2 million yuan, he noted.

The entrepreneur expressed hope that with the successful entry into the Central Asian market, more and more artificial turf from China will “take root” in the countries of this region. -0-

BEIJING, Aug. 7 (Xinhua) — Shenzhen, south China's Guangdong Province, stepped up efforts to ensure stable development of foreign trade, surpassing Shanghai to rank first among Chinese cities in foreign trade turnover from January to June 2025, the China Economic Times reported, citing statistics from the Shenzhen Municipal Government.

On Wednesday, the aforementioned newspaper published an article titled “What are the reasons for Shenzhen to become the top city in China in terms of foreign trade volume?” The reasons listed include promoting import growth, optimizing export structure, exploring new markets, and fully developing transnational e-commerce.

In the first six months of this year, Shenzhen's foreign trade turnover was 2.17 trillion yuan (about 304 billion US dollars), down 1.1 percent compared with the same period last year. The rate of decline was 1.7 percentage points slower than in the first quarter of this year. Shenzhen accounted for about 10 percent of the country's total foreign trade during the reporting period.

This has seen Shenzhen overtake Shanghai, whose foreign trade turnover was 2.15 trillion yuan in the first half of 2025, and take first place among Chinese cities in this indicator.

He recalled that in 2024, Shenzhen was the leader among Chinese cities in terms of foreign trade volume, which amounted to 4.5 trillion yuan. And in the first quarter of this year, it lost first place to Shanghai.

Statistics show that in the first half of 2025, Shenzhen's import volume reached a new historical high of 858.86 billion yuan, up 9.5 percent year on year.

In January-June, Shenzhen's high-tech exports grew by 8 percent year-on-year, becoming the main driver of the city's stable foreign trade sector. The share of mechanical engineering and electronics products in the city's total exports was 74.9 percent.

In addition to Shenzhen and Shanghai, the top ten Chinese cities in terms of foreign trade turnover in the first half of 2025 also included Beijing, Suzhou, Dongguan, Ningbo, Guangzhou, Jinhua, Xiamen and Qingdao. These ten cities accounted for half of China's total foreign trade in the first six months of this year. -0-

NEW YORK, Aug. 7 (Xinhua) — U.S. President Donald Trump plans to meet in person with Russian President Vladimir Putin next week and plans to hold a trilateral meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky soon after, the New York Times reported Wednesday, citing people familiar with the matter.

According to the report, during a telephone conversation with European leaders on Wednesday, D. Trump said that only he, V. Putin and V. Zelensky would be present at the meetings.

A source familiar with the details of the telephone conversation said that the Europeans seemed to agree with D. Trump's decision. However, it remains unclear whether V. Putin and V. Zelensky accepted the proposed plan, the newspaper notes.

It is reported that V. Zelensky took part in a telephone conversation, which also included the leaders of Great Britain, Germany, Finland and NATO, as well as US Vice President J.D. Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio and US Presidential Special Envoy Steven Witkoff.

D. Trump said on his Truth Social page on Wednesday that S. Witkoff “had an extremely productive meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin” in Moscow.

“Everyone agrees that the war must end, and we will work to do so in the coming days and weeks,” Trump added. –0–

UNITED NATIONS, Aug. 6 (Xinhua) — Hundreds of thousands of people have been affected by severe drought in central and northern Somalia, U.N. Secretary-General's deputy spokesman Farhan Haq said at a daily briefing on Wednesday.

According to him, the results of an analysis conducted by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) showed that more than 880,000 people live in severely affected areas in 16 districts of the country.

F. Haq said UN agencies and partners are conducting joint assessments in Puntland and Somaliland to identify key needs, adding that preliminary reports indicate worsening food insecurity, reduced access to water and pasture, and severe disruptions to livelihoods.

UN aid agencies said wells had dried up and more than 160 boreholes were no longer functioning. Pastoralists were migrating with their herds to other areas in search of water and pasture.

The UN-run humanitarian fund for Somalia is preparing to release funds to meet urgent life-saving needs, F. Haq said.

"Our partners are planning to scale up their assistance, but are constrained by recent funding cuts from key donors. The $1.4 billion Humanitarian Needs and Response Plan for Somalia is only 17 percent funded, at nearly $242 million," the UN chief's deputy spokesman said. -0-
