Ankara, March 9 (Xinhua) – Fourteen people were killed after a boat carrying migrants collided with a Turkish coast guard vessel off the coast of Beymelek in Turkey's Antalya province, local authorities reported on Monday.

"The boat, which attempted to escape without heeding the coast guard's warning, collided with the coast guard vessel due to its high-speed maneuvers, causing some migrants to fall into the water," said provincial governor Hulusi Sahin.

He said the incident occurred around 06:00 local time /03:00 GMT/ when a boat carrying illegal migrants from Africa, including women and children, was discovered off the coast of Beymelek.

Seven migrants who fell into the water were rescued by coast guard units, and ambulance crews provided assistance, noted H. Sahin, adding that search and rescue operations are ongoing.

The prosecutor's office has launched a judicial investigation, and the Antalya governor's office has also initiated an administrative investigation into the incident, the governor added. –0–

BEIJING, March 9 (Xinhua) — China will promote digital smartness and greening of its transportation sector during the 15th Five-Year Plan (2026-2030), Transport Minister Liu Wei said Monday.

In the next five years, China will focus on promoting the application of artificial intelligence in the transportation industry and will work to accelerate the development of smart highways, smart ports and smart shipping, Liu Wei said on the sidelines of the fourth session of the 14th National People's Congress (NPC) in Beijing.

According to the minister, the country plans to promote the development of zero-carbon transport corridors and stations as part of efforts to stimulate low-carbon development in the country's transportation sector. During the 15th Five-Year Plan period, China will expand the use of environmentally friendly transportation equipment, including vehicles and vessels powered by new energy sources, he noted.

Currently, 98.8 percent of China's expressway service areas are equipped with charging stations, Liu Wei said, adding that the country will focus on introducing high-power charging stations this year to ease the difficulty of finding charging stations and reduce waiting times.

Liu Wei announced that during the 15th Five-Year Plan period, China will implement projects to improve the efficiency of intercity travel in urban agglomerations, which will significantly increase the proportion of the population within them who will be able to get to work in an hour or less and then back home in the same amount of time.

The transportation sector plays a vital role in serving the population, Liu Wei pointed out, noting that on average, about 550 million parcels are processed daily across the country, meaning that each Chinese person receives an average of about three parcels per week. -0-
