BEIJING, Aug. 13 (Xinhua) — Kazakh composer Baldyrgan Baikadamova has donated a family collection associated with renowned Chinese musician Xian Xinghai (1905-1945) to China.

The donation ceremony took place last week at the Panyu District Library in Guangzhou City, southern China's Guangdong Province. The event was held to mark the 80th anniversary of the victory in the Chinese People's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War, as well as the 120th anniversary of Xian Xinghai's birth, local media reported.

Xian Xinghai is a native of today's Panyu District. He is known in China as a folk musician, his works including "Cantatas on the Yellow River", "Guerrilla Song", "Go Behind Enemy Lines" inspired the Chinese people to heroically fight against the Japanese aggressors.

Xian Xinghai spent the last three years of his life mostly in Kazakhstan, where he met and befriended his Kazakh colleagues, including Bakhytzhan Baikadamov, the father of Baldyrgana Baikadamov.

During those difficult times when Xian Xinghai was alone, sick and poor, Kazakh composer Bakhytzhan Baikadamov provided him with shelter. Their brotherly friendship transcended national borders.

Baldyrgan Baikadamova presented the administration of the Chinese composer's hometown with a piano seat, family archives, manuscripts of correspondence, as well as manuscripts and images of Xian Xinghai during his stay in Kazakhstan.

"This seat was used by Xian Xinghai and my father when they played the piano and created. The "Friendship Chair" witnessed the birth of musical works, the creative process of two musicians and their mutual respect," B. Baikadamova shared at the ceremony.

The list of donated items also includes archival materials reflecting Xian Xinghai’s stay in Moscow and Almaty, as well as posters, programs and tickets for concerts dedicated to this composer.

Xian Xinghai, she says, is a great musician and is very popular with Kazakhs. For many years, members of the Baikadamov family have been collecting and systematizing Xian Xinghai's relics so that more people can learn about the facts of his biography.

“Xian Xinghai wrote a large number of works that inspired countless people to fight the Japanese invaders. These works are connected with our common historical memory,” B. Baikadamova continued, adding that her grandfather fought in the anti-fascist war, and her family knows about the suffering during the war firsthand.

Xian Xinghai was born in 1905 to a poor family of fishermen in Macao. He received his musical education in Beijing and Shanghai, then went to France in 1929 to study and work. Six years later, the young man returned to China and actively participated in the creation and distribution of songs about resistance to Japanese aggression and the salvation of the country. In 1938, he came to Yan'an and began teaching at the music department of the Yan'an Lu Xun Institute of Arts.

In May 1940, Xian Xinghai went to the Soviet Union to work on the documentary film “Yan’an and the Eighth Army”. A year later, the Great Patriotic War broke out and the film’s production was suspended, and Xian Xinghai was unable to return to his homeland. He reached Almaty in late 1942, but still could not find a way to leave for China. Bakhytzhan Baikadamov, whom he had never met before, extended a helping hand.

In 1945, during a tour, Xian Xinghai fell ill with pneumonia and soon died in Moscow. After the proclamation of the PRC in 1949, his relics were brought to China from the Soviet Union and Mongolia. In 1985, his ashes were reburied in the musician's homeland.

The story of Xian Xinghai and Bakhytzhan Baikadamov, as a vivid example of friendship between the peoples of China and Kazakhstan, is well remembered in both countries.

In 2017, the Chinese and Kazakh sides announced in Astana the start of filming a movie called “Composer,” which tells about the friendship between Xian Xinghai and Bakhytzhan Baikadamov.

This was not only the first film co-produced by China and Kazakhstan, but also an important project of cultural and humanitarian cooperation between the two countries within the framework of the Belt and Road initiative. The film premiered in Beijing in 2019.

Back in 1998, Xian Xinghai Street opened in Almaty. The house where he lived was transformed into a museum by order of the head of Kazakhstan. There is a monument to the composer on the street with an inscription in Chinese, Kazakh and Russian: “The street is named in honor of the outstanding Chinese composer, an ambassador of friendship and culture between the peoples of Kazakhstan and China.”

In June of this year, a ceremonial reopening of the Xian Xinghai monument after restoration took place in Almaty. -0-

Baku, Aug. 12 /Xinhua/ — Azerbaijan Railways recorded an 80 percent year-on-year increase in the number of freight trains from China in the first seven months of 2025, with 225 block trains arriving in Azerbaijan from China, the company said on Tuesday.

During the reporting period, approximately 24,000 TEU (twenty-foot container equivalent units) of cargo were transported, which is almost double the volume handled in the first seven months of 2024. This reflects the steady growth of trade along the Middle Corridor (Trans-Caspian International Transport Route).

Over the past year, Azerbaijan Railways recorded the arrival of 287 block trains from China. By the end of 2025, the company predicts the arrival of more than 400 trains, highlighting the growing importance of the corridor. –0–

SEOUL, Aug. 12 (Xinhua) — The Seoul Central District Court has issued an arrest warrant for Kim Gun-hee, the wife of former South Korean President Yoon Seok-yol, who is in custody on charges of sedition and other crimes, the special prosecutor's team in charge of her case said Tuesday evening.

The court issued the warrant at the request of the special prosecutor's team based on charges of violating the capital market law, the political fund law and the bribery by intermediary law. The court explained that the measure was aimed at preventing Kim Gun-hee from destroying evidence.

Kim Gun-hee was placed under arrest at the South Seoul Detention Center, where she was awaiting a court decision after attending a hearing on her detention.

This case became the first in the country's constitutional history when a former presidential couple found themselves in custody at the same time.

Yun Seok-yeol has been held in a separate detention center since July 10 on charges of rebellion related to his brief imposition of martial law last December.

Kim Kun-hee, in turn, is suspected of involvement in stock price manipulation, interference in the nomination of candidates for the 2022 parliamentary by-elections, and receiving expensive gifts from the Unification Church in exchange for business favors. –0–

TEHRAN, Aug. 12 (Xinhua) — Iran's First Vice President Mohammad Reza Aref said in Tehran on Tuesday that Iran could hold direct talks with the United States on its nuclear program if conditions are favorable, Iran's official IRNA news agency reported.

“Iran is ready for negotiations on equal terms, since negotiations are designed to protect the interests of both sides,” M.R. Aref told reporters. “If the conditions are suitable, negotiations can even take place in a direct format,” he added.

He noted that Iran is in no way opposed to negotiations, but will not agree to those that only impose the intentions of the United States.

He said Iran had made it clear to the US that it intended to build trust, “but it seems as if they [the Americans] are pretending to be asleep.”

The First Vice President also noted that some Western countries have turned the issue of Iran's nuclear program into a political project, adding that "the 'zero enrichment' option is a big joke."

On June 13, two days before the start of the sixth round of proxy talks on Iran's nuclear program with the United States, Israel launched massive airstrikes on several Iranian sites, including nuclear and military facilities, killing senior military officials, nuclear scientists and scores of civilians. Iran responded with several waves of missile and drone strikes against Israel.

On June 22, the US military bombed three Iranian nuclear facilities in Natanz, Fordow and Isfahan. Iran responded by striking the US Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar.

On June 24, after a 12-day war, a ceasefire was reached between Iran and Israel.

In recent days, Washington has repeatedly demanded that Iran completely stop enriching uranium, but Tehran has categorically rejected this demand. –0–

BUDAPEST, Aug. 12 (Xinhua) — The European Union should not set conditions for talks to which its leaders have not been invited, but should initiate its own summit with Russia, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban said on Tuesday, explaining why his country did not join the EU leaders' joint statement on Ukraine.

Earlier in the day, the 26 EU member states adopted a declaration welcoming US President Donald Trump's stated efforts to help end the conflict in Ukraine ahead of the American leader's planned meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska later this week. Hungary was the only EU country not to endorse the document.

“The declaration attempts to set conditions for a meeting to which EU leaders were not even invited,” Orban wrote on social media. “The fact that the EU was left out is sad enough in itself.”

He added that the only sensible step would be to initiate an EU-Russia summit, following the example of the planned US-Russia meeting. “Let’s give peace a chance,” the prime minister suggested.

The declaration issued by the EU says that a “just and lasting peace” must be based on international law, including respect for the independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine, and that borders cannot be changed by force. EU leaders reaffirmed their readiness to continue political, financial, economic, humanitarian, military and diplomatic support for Ukraine, including its right to self-defence and its course towards EU membership.

Trump and Putin are scheduled to meet in Alaska on August 15 to discuss a possible ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine and ways to improve bilateral relations. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and EU officials were not invited to the talks. –0–

AMMAN, Aug. 12 (Xinhua) — Jordan held a trilateral meeting with Syria and the United States on Tuesday to discuss the situation in Syria, according to a statement released by the Jordanian Foreign Ministry.

The ministry reported that the meeting was attended by Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister of Jordan Ayman al-Safadi, Foreign Minister of the Syrian transitional government Asaad Hassan al-Shibani, US Ambassador to Turkey and US Special Envoy for Syria Thomas Barrack, as well as representatives of relevant departments of the three countries.

According to the statement, the parties stressed that the province of As-Suwayda remains an integral part of Syria and noted the importance of protecting the rights of its residents in the restoration of a unified state with broad citizen participation.

The department specified that the meeting participants agreed to meet again in the coming weeks to continue the discussion and respond to the Syrian authorities' request to create a tripartite working group, the purpose of which will be to consolidate the ceasefire in the province of As-Suwayda and advance the settlement of the crisis.

As noted in the document, Jordan and the United States welcomed steps by the Syrian authorities, including an investigation into recent violations in the province, cooperation with UN institutions, an increase in humanitarian aid, the restoration of affected areas, the return of displaced persons and the promotion of civil peace.

The two countries also called for increased international efforts to rebuild Syria.

The talks were a continuation of a meeting that took place on July 19 in Amman and was dedicated to securing the ceasefire in the province of As-Suwayda in southern Syria and resolving the crisis in the region. –0–
