BEIJING, Aug. 15 (Xinhua) — The cities of Dalian and Benxi in northeast China's Liaoning Province recently hosted an event called "Explore China, Charming Liaoning," in which teenagers from Russia visited the province.

According to the Liaoning Provincial Government website, the event was organized by the Liaoning Provincial People's Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries, the Liaoning Provincial Youth Federation and the Russian Consulate General in Shenyang. Its goal is to promote friendly communication between Chinese and Russian teenagers through football, strengthen the traditional friendship between the two countries and cultivate a new force that is friendly and loving to China.

During their stay in Liaoning, the Russian youth football team played friendly matches with their peers from Dalian. Players from both teams demonstrated teamwork, sporting passion, high skill and competitive spirit.

Outside the field, a rich cultural program awaited the participants. At the TCM clinic, Russian teenagers listened to a lecture on the theory of channels and collaterals, and also learned about the unique features of Chinese medicine.

Vice Chairman of the People's Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries of Liaoning Province Jiang Yi noted at the welcoming ceremony that the event "Explore China, Charming Liaoning" is a landmark project of people's exchanges between Liaoning Province and Russian youth. This year, the event has already been successfully held three times. The current program includes football matches, familiarization with Liaoning's tourism resources, and popularization of traditional Chinese culture.

He expressed hope that Russian teenagers will take advantage of this opportunity to experience the hospitality of Liaoning residents and the local flavor, deepen mutual understanding and strengthen friendship, and upon returning home, become successors to the Chinese-Russian friendship, passing on their impressions to friends and family.

It is reported that the Liaoning People's Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries will continue to build platforms for youth exchanges between China and Russia, so that more Russian youth can experience the charm of traditional Chinese culture and the results of China's modernization drive. This will inject new impetus into Liaoning's opening up and strengthen international cooperation in the province. -0-

BEIJING, Aug. 15 (Xinhua) — "Hello! How much is this Russian doll?" Ms. Li, a tourist from Harbin, used a calculator on her phone to "bargain" with a Russian saleswoman at a market square in the China-Russia border trade zone in Manzhouli, north China's Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, on Aug. 12. Nearby, the aroma of sausages from a Russian-style food stand drew a line of people to buy.

According to the website of the Manzhouli City Government, the China-Russia Border Residents' Mutual Trade Zone in Manzhouli uses the "mutual trade and tourism industry" operation model to transform the area into an immersive complex for Russian-style cultural experience and consumption, thus creating a broader platform for cultural exchange and trade cooperation between China and Russia.

Entering the 24,400 square meter complex, visitors find themselves in a lively atmosphere. At the entrance, Russian employees in traditional costumes greet guests with a smile, and the feeling of another culture immediately overwhelms. Nearby, the supermarket of Russian goods is bustling with life: the shelves are filled with chocolate, nesting dolls, and folk crafts. Tourists move between the shelves, carefully choosing the goods they like.

Following the signs, visitors find themselves in the Russian Ethnographic Museum. Here, ancient exhibits are on display: portraits, whole sheets of stamps – silent witnesses to the history of cultural intertwining on the Chinese-Russian border. In the adjacent art studio, a Russian artist creates an oil painting right before the eyes of the viewers. Borderland landscapes and scenes of folk life come to life on canvas. Tourists watch quietly, and the atmosphere of art fills the space.

In the market square, in a transparent workshop, a Russian master kneads dough using traditional technology. His movements are skillful and smooth. The aroma of wheat mixed with the smell of butter spreads in the air, causing many tourists to stop in anticipation to try this authentic Russian product.

“They used to say ‘go abroad,’ but now you can buy Russian goods, see Russian architecture and talk to Russian friends without leaving the country,” says Ms. Zhang, who lives nearby, holding a loaf of bread she just bought.

“This year, our complex is free to enter all year round,” said Zhu Xingzhi, manager of the China-Russia Border Residents’ Trade Zone in Manzhouli. “Next year, we will add interactive programs such as making Russian bread with children while optimizing the related service infrastructure. This will better support study tours, cultural exchanges and other activities, helping visitors deepen their understanding of the cultural convergence between China and Russia through personal experience.”

Cangzhou, Hebei Province, August 15 (Xinhua) — "I really like Chinese wushu. Anyone can do it," said Sergei Nikolaev, president of the Moscow Wushu Club.

Recently, 10 Russians from the above-mentioned club came to the local school of Chinese traditional martial art wushu “Zhihai” in the city of Cangzhou, Hebei Province /Northern China/ to prepare for two wushu tournaments that will be held in the cities of Qingdao /Shandong Province, Eastern China/ and Chengdu /Sichuan Province, Southwest China/.

55-year-old Sergey Nikolaev has been into wushu for over 30 years, devoting a lot of effort to popularizing this Chinese martial art.

Since 1971, Wang Zhihai, the heir to the traditions of Cangzhou Wushu and a provincial representative of the national project for the preservation of intangible cultural heritage “Cangzhou Wushu”, has been teaching students for free, and has repeatedly visited Russia and other countries to conduct cultural exchanges, promoting the international dissemination of Cangzhou Wushu.

In 2018, Wang Zhihai was invited to Russia to teach foreign students. Sergey Nikolaev has been his loyal follower ever since.

“I met Wang Zhihai in 2018 and since then I have often consulted with him via video,” notes Sergey Nikolaev.

In addition to wushu, the Russian is interested in traditional Chinese culture, especially calligraphy and tea ceremony. This time, taking advantage of the opportunity to come to China for the competition, he finally realized his dream of visiting China.

“I really hope that in the future we will have the opportunity to come to Cangzhou for competitions and to study wushu here every year,” emphasized Sergey Nikolaev, expressing his desire to introduce more Russians to Chinese wushu and culture.

More than 200 wushu enthusiasts from China and abroad come to the Zhihai School of Traditional Chinese Wushu Martial Arts, which is an important center for preserving traditional martial arts, every year to master piguaquan (cutting and hanging fist), miodao, and other techniques and styles. -0-

MACAO, Aug. 15 (Xinhua) — Kazakh composer Baldyrgan Baikadamova has donated a family collection related to renowned Chinese musician Xian Xinghai to the Macao Special Administrative Region (SAR).

The donation ceremony took place on Wednesday at the Xian Xinghai Memorial Complex.

Xian Xinghai is known as a folk musician. His works, including the cantata "Huanghe", "Guerrilla Song", "Go Behind Enemy Lines", inspired the Chinese people to heroically fight against the Japanese aggressors.

He was born in June 1905 in Macao. In May 1940, Xian Xinghai went to the Soviet Union to work on the documentary film “Yan’an and the Eighth Army”. A year later, the Great Patriotic War began, and the film’s production was suspended. The composer was unable to return to his homeland and reached the city of Almaty at the end of 1942. Bakhytzhan Baikadamov, whom he had never met before, extended a helping hand to him. The story of Xian Xinghai and Bakhytzhan Baikadamov serves as a vivid example of the friendship between the peoples of China and Kazakhstan.

B. Baikadamova, daughter of Bakhytzhan Baikadamova, donated documents, musical scores and photographs of Xian Xinghai to the Macao SAR.

As Acting Director of the Macao SAR Department of Culture Cai Jianlong said at the donation ceremony, this year marks the 80th anniversary of the victory of the Chinese People's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War, as well as the 120th anniversary of Xian Xinghai's birth.

The donated precious relics, which testify to the deep friendship between Xian Xinghai and the Baikadamov family, will enrich the collection of the Xian Xinghai Memorial Complex and become shining examples for patriotic education in the Macao SAR, he added.

After the ceremony, B. Baikadamova shared stories related to the Chinese composer during his stay in Kazakhstan.

Britain calls on Israel to halt settlement construction in West Bank

LONDON, Aug. 15 (Xinhua) — British Foreign Secretary David Lammy on Thursday called on Israel to stop building settlements in the West Bank, warning that the move would constitute a "flagrant breach of international law" and seriously undermine prospects for a two-state solution.

"The UK is firmly opposed to the Israeli government's plans to build settlements in the E1 area, which would split a future Palestinian state in two," the Foreign Secretary said, adding that "these plans must be stopped immediately."

Earlier, Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich presented a plan to build about 3,500 housing units in the E1 area of the West Bank. The official said the project would “bury” the idea of a Palestinian state.

Area E1, located between Jerusalem and the settlement of Maale Adumim, is considered particularly controversial because if Israelis settled there, East Jerusalem would be effectively cut off from the northern part of the West Bank. Plans for construction in the area have been frozen for many years, largely due to international protests.

Lammy, along with Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand and French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot, also discussed the need for “an immediate ceasefire, the release of all hostages, an influx of aid and a plan to establish a lasting peace” in Gaza.

Britain, along with several other countries, is signalling a willingness to formally recognise a Palestinian state in September unless Israel meets key conditions such as agreeing to a ceasefire in Gaza.

“The situation in Gaza is dire,” Lammy wrote on social media on Thursday, warning that Israel’s actions were further undermining the prospect of a “two-state solution.” –0–

Tashkent, Aug. 15 (Xinhua) — Uzbekistan intends to advance work on expanding waste recycling, the press service of the head of state reported on Thursday.

“On August 14, President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev reviewed a presentation on measures to expand waste recycling,” the statement said.

It is reported that modern approaches are being introduced in this area, which is of great importance for the improvement of the country and the protection of public health. Last year, the Agency for Waste Management and Circular Economy Development was created. The area, which was previously a state monopoly, was opened to entrepreneurship, and a favorable business climate was created.

It is noted that during the presentation, responsible persons informed about the progress of projects and plans for the future.

"Projects for generating energy by burning waste are supported. Chinese investors are building such plants in six regions. The state undertakes to not only pay for waste disposal, but also to purchase the energy produced," the statement said.

As reported, an order was given to develop a two-year program for the full provision of social institutions and mahallas with waste containers. The importance of forming an environmental culture in society, starting with kindergartens and schools, was noted. –0–
