Xi Jinping, as general secretary of the CPC Central Committee, chairman of the CPC and chairman of the Central Military Commission, led a central delegation to attend the ceremonies to mark the founding of the Xizang Autonomous Region, marking the first time in the history of the Party and the country, demonstrating the CPC Central Committee's high attention to the work in Xizang and its sincere concern for the cadres and masses of all ethnic groups in Xizang.

Wang Huning, member of the Standing Committee of the Politburo of the CPC Central Committee, Chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, head of the central delegation, and Cai Qi, member of the Standing Committee of the Politburo of the CPC Central Committee and Director of the General Office of the CPC Central Committee, arrived on the same plane.

In early autumn, a cool wind blows across the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. Red flags flutter at Lhasa Konggar Airport, and the atmosphere is filled with excitement.

At around 12 o'clock, the special plane carrying Xi Jinping landed at Konggar Airport. Residents of Xizang of different nationalities and social strata who were waiting at the aircraft parking area greeted him with thunderous applause and cheers. Xi Jinping stepped off the plane and waved to the people who were greeting him.

When Xi Jinping came down the steps, Wang Junzheng offered a hadak as a sign of respect, and protocol officers presented tsampa and highland barley wine. People of various ethnic groups, dressed in festive attire, waved red flags and colorful bouquets, performed joyful folk dances, and welcomed the general secretary and expressed their sincere wishes to him.

The ancient city of Lhasa was filled with a festive atmosphere: from the airport to the place of residence, colorful flags fluttered on both sides of the main streets, representatives of different nationalities, holding red banners and khataks, shouted greetings in unison, expressing joy and gratitude. Xi Jinping opened the car window and waved his hand repeatedly to the people gathered along the road.

LONDON, Aug. 21 (Xinhua) — Britain's annual consumer price inflation accelerated to 3.8 percent in July from 3.6 percent in June, the highest since January 2024, the country's Office for National Statistics said on Wednesday.

In July, the consumer price index rose by 0.1 percent compared with a fall of 0.2 percent a year earlier.

“Inflation indicators continue to flicker and the July figure was slightly higher than most analysts had forecast,” said Stuart Morrison, research manager at the British Chambers of Commerce. He added that there was little sign that inflation would approach the Bank of England’s 2% target any time soon.

A survey by the British Chambers of Commerce found that inflation remains the main concern for more than half of UK small and medium-sized firms. Mr Morrison said national insurance, wage growth and tariffs were adding to the pressure, while persistent inflation could limit the Bank of England's ability to cut interest rates further.

The UK's Office for National Statistics also said July consumer price index in the UK was significantly higher than preliminary estimates for France and Germany, rising by around 1% and 2% respectively. –0–

KABUL, Aug. 21 (Xinhua) — The sixth round of trilateral dialogue between the foreign ministers of China, Afghanistan and Pakistan was held here on Wednesday.

The meeting was attended by member of the Politburo of the CPC Central Committee and Minister of Foreign Affairs of China Wang Yi, Acting Minister of Foreign Affairs of Afghanistan Amir Khan Muttaqi and Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Pakistan Mohammad Ishaq Dar.

During the talks, Wang Yi noted that since the resumption of the trilateral foreign ministers' dialogue mechanism in 2022, the two sides have continued to advance political, development and security cooperation, safeguard regional peace and stability, and respond to various risks and challenges on the principles of mutual respect, equal consultation and mutual benefit.

He said China has put forward the important concept of building a community with a shared future, as well as the Global Development Initiative, the Global Security Initiative and the Global Civilization Initiative, which serve as a guide for the three countries in jointly building a beautiful home and laying the foundation for security.

Wang Yi noted that China is ready to deepen trust with Afghanistan and Pakistan, understand and support each other on issues affecting the core interests of the three countries, and resolutely oppose the interference of any external forces in regional affairs, as well as the activities of any organizations or individuals that harm each other's national sovereignty, security and territorial integrity.

He said China and Pakistan play a leading role in the international community and among regional neighbors in helping Afghanistan in its stabilization and reconstruction efforts and in expanding Kabul's external relations.

Wang Yi noted that China will continue to defend Afghanistan's interests at multilateral platforms, promote constructive contacts and exchanges between the international community and Afghanistan, and support the Afghan side's efforts to normalize diplomatic relations.

He said China, Afghanistan and Pakistan should expand development cooperation, improve security dialogue mechanisms, deepen law enforcement and security cooperation, step up efforts to combat transnational terrorism, and address the root causes of extremist activities through comprehensive measures on the basis of consensus.

A.H. Muttaqi and M.I. Dar highly appreciated the positive progress achieved by the trilateral Foreign Ministers' Dialogue Mechanism and China's contribution to the development of trilateral cooperation.

A.H. Muttaqi noted that Afghanistan hopes to deepen friendly relations, strengthen coordination and cooperation, and promote further development of trilateral cooperation.

In turn, the Pakistani Foreign Minister said that trilateral cooperation has enormous potential and should be strengthened in various areas to achieve common development.

He said that as a neighbour of Afghanistan, Pakistan is ready to make a greater contribution to advancing the Afghan peace process and improving the living conditions of the Afghan people.

M. I. Dar said that Pakistan calls for the release of frozen Afghan assets abroad. He also called on the three sides to jointly combat terrorism in all its forms, including cross-border terrorist attacks.

The two sides agreed to make full use of the trilateral foreign ministers' dialogue mechanism, strengthen exchanges and cooperation in all fields, and promote regional peace, stability, development and prosperity. –0–

UNITED NATIONS, Aug. 21 (Xinhua) — UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Wednesday condemned the decision by Israel's Supreme Planning Council to approve more than 3,400 housing units in the E1 area of the occupied West Bank, his spokesman Stephane Dujarric said.

“Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank, including East Jerusalem, are a violation of international law and in direct contravention of UN resolutions,” the statement said.

“Advancing this project poses a threat to the realization of the principle of ‘two states for two peoples.’ It will lead to a rupture between the northern and southern parts of the West Bank and will have serious consequences for the territorial integrity of the occupied Palestinian territory,” the statement said.

The Secretary-General reiterated his call on the Government of Israel to immediately cease all settlement activity and fully comply with its obligations under international law and act in accordance with relevant UN resolutions and in accordance with the advisory opinion of the International Court of Justice of 19 July 2024.

Israel's High Planning Council on Wednesday approved the construction of 3,753 housing units, 3,401 of which are in the E1 area of the Maale Adumim settlement. The project will create a continuous settlement line separating the West Bank from East Jerusalem. –0–
