Recently, China's research icebreaker Xuelong 2 (Snow Dragon 2) returned to Shanghai after completing its 41st Antarctic expedition.

"This expedition involved research institutions and scientists from eight countries, including the United Kingdom, the United States, Australia, New Zealand, Norway, the Republic of Korea, Thailand and Malaysia," said Gu Wu, director of the Department of Marine Strategic Planning and Economy of the Ministry of Natural Resources of China. This has provided effective support for the protection of the Antarctic marine ecosystem and international governance, and is an important practice of China's active participation in international ocean governance.

In 2024, the maiden international voyage of China's deep-sea manned submersible Jiaolong carried scientists from eight countries, including Canada, Spain and Mexico, to jointly conduct research on marine biodiversity conservation with Chinese scientists.

In response to the UN Decade of Ocean Science initiative, China established a national committee for the implementation of the Decade of Ocean Science and developed a national action plan.

China also actively participates in international ocean governance, providing many public services. As of the end of 2024, under the 21st Century Maritime Silk Road initiative, China has conducted more than 300 training courses, providing training opportunities for more than 6,000 young scientists from developing countries.

With China's participation, the Port of Piraeus in Greece has become the fourth largest container port in Europe; the Port of Gwadar in the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor is becoming a logistics hub and industrial base; the key high-quality joint construction project of the "Belt and Road" between China and Peru, the Port of Chancay, has started operation, becoming a new channel between Asia and Latin America for sea and land transportation in the new era.

In the first half of this year, Fujian Province opened the first direct container route to Ecuador, Yancheng Port in Jiangsu Province launched a new direct route to Jordan, the first batch of trains on the Jinhua-Turkmenbashi-Baku Trans-Caspian International Transport Route was launched, and the first Fuzhou-Quanzhou-Thailand combined sea and rail transport was completed.

In addition, the ocean is a link for interaction between people of different countries. According to the latest statistics, in the first half of this year, the total passenger flow of cruise ships and the number of cruise ships received by Chinese ports increased by 40.1% and 33.7% year on year, respectively.

Li Yingying, a junior research fellow at the Institute of Eurasian Studies at the China Institute of International Studies, wrote in an article for the Tianjin Daily on August 19 that cooperation within the SCO and the Belt and Road Initiative complement each other effectively.

The SCO has always adhered to the "Shanghai Spirit" – the principles of mutual trust, mutual benefit, equality, consultation, respect for cultural diversity and the pursuit of common development, which is largely consistent with the principles of the Belt and Road Initiative – "joint consultation, joint construction and joint use".

In recent years, cooperation between China and countries along the Belt and Road has yielded fruitful results in areas such as policy coordination, infrastructure links, trade, financial integration and people-to-people exchanges, which has become a key impetus for SCO countries to overcome development obstacles and deepen practical cooperation.

BEIRUT, Aug. 27 (Xinhua) — Protests that erupted in southern Lebanon on Wednesday forced U.S. Special Envoy for Syria Tom Barrack to cut short a planned trip to the border region, local security sources and eyewitnesses said.

Hundreds of residents gathered in the village of Khiam, the city of Tyre and at the crossroads of several border villages, waving Hezbollah flags, carrying pictures of fighters killed in past conflicts and banners condemning American support for Israel.

According to Lebanon's National News Agency, Barrak had earlier arrived by helicopter of the Lebanese Armed Forces to the Francois al-Hajj barracks in the city of Marjayoun, where he met with Lebanese officers and heard their reports on the security situation in the south of the country. Then, as the sources indicated, the American diplomat flew over the border region and inspected five areas that are still occupied by Israeli troops, after which he canceled planned stops on the ground due to protests.

Activists on social media called for protests against the visit, calling it “an attempt to legitimize suspicious political and economic projects.” They said “the south /of the country/ is not an open platform for those who ignore the victims of the resistance and the people.”

A day earlier, Barrak lashed out at Lebanese journalists, comparing them to “animals” during a press conference at Beirut’s presidential palace. “Please be quiet for a while… As soon as chaos starts and everyone behaves like animals, we will leave,” the envoy told reporters. “If you want to know what is going on, behave in a civilized manner, be kind and patient, because that is the problem in the region.” –0–

Astana, Aug. 27 (Xinhua) — Airports in Kazakhstan are ending the practice of storing items confiscated from passengers during screening and will dispose of them immediately after inspection, the Kursiv portal reported on Wednesday, citing the Kazakh Transport Ministry.

According to the department, the decision was made to bring the aviation security system in line with international standards, as well as to optimize passenger service processes. The ministry noted that the confiscated items may be handed over to accompanying persons, if possible.

Items prohibited for carriage in hand luggage include liquids, aerosols and gels in containers larger than 100 ml, products without factory packaging, such as honey, jam, dairy products and home-made preserves, as well as other potentially dangerous items. Passengers are advised to familiarize themselves in advance with the full list of rules for the carriage of hand luggage and baggage on the websites of airlines and at airports.

Previously, such items were stored in special areas at airports, and passengers could pick them up at any time. This practice has now been discontinued. –0–

BEIJING, Aug. 27 (Xinhua) — China's trade turnover with other member countries of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) reached about 512.4 billion U.S. dollars in 2024, up 2.7 percent year on year, Chinese Vice Minister of Commerce Lin Ji said at a press conference on Wednesday.

Last year, China imported about $90 billion worth of crude oil, natural gas and coal from other SCO member countries, as well as $13.66 billion worth of agricultural products, he said.

As Lin Ji specified, in 2024, energy imports from other SCO member countries accounted for about one-fifth of China's total imports.

“Investment and industrial cooperation between China and other SCO member states has demonstrated sustainable development in recent years,” said Zhang Li, head of the Department of Foreign Investment and Economic Cooperation of the Ministry of Commerce.

Zhang Li added that in recent years, Chinese enterprises have established more than 3,000 companies in other SCO countries, creating an average of more than 200,000 jobs per year.

The 2025 SCO summit will take place from August 31 to September 1 in the northern Chinese port city of Tianjin. The meeting will bring together leaders of more than 20 countries and heads of 10 international organizations to outline the SCO's development plan for the next decade.

In its 24 years of existence, the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, originally created to address security issues, has evolved into a comprehensive regional organization representing nearly half of the world's population. –0–
