An exhibition by a St. Petersburg artist has opened at the Technopolis Polytech research building. Elena Artsutanova, the great-granddaughter of the first director of the St. Petersburg Polytechnic Institute, Prince Andrei Gagarin.

The exhibition is dedicated to the 170th anniversary of Andrei Grigorievich's birth. According to the old calendar, the first director of the Polytechnic University was born on December 22, 1855. He passed away in December 1920. Elena Artsutanova passed away in December 2024. The exhibition, dedicated to the memory of both Gagarins, embodies the connection between generations of this family through the Polytechnic University.

The opening ceremony was attended not only by Polytechnic University staff and students, but also by Elena Dmitrievna’s close friends, colleagues, and students.

"Today, for the first time, an exhibition dedicated to the memory of our beloved Elena Artsutanova opens within these walls," said artist, teacher, and member of the Creative Union of Artists Svetlana Zapolskaya. "Her great-grandfather, Prince Andrei Gagarin, was the first rector of the university. Elena treasured her family's memory and maintained close ties with the university. Three memorable dates coincided in December, and this exhibition is dedicated to them. The works on display here reflect the world of Elena Artsutanova, with its rhythms, forms, color flows, and accents."

Svetlana Zapolskaya reported that on September 14, 2025, the burial of Gagarin's great-granddaughter next to her great-grandfather took place in Kholomki in a solemn ceremony. Furthermore, in September, the estate continued the tradition of holding plein air paintings, as was the case with Elena Dmitrievna.

Artist, graphic designer, and member of the Creative Union of Artists, Marina Oz, on behalf of Elena Dmitrievna's friends, family, and followers, expressed sincere gratitude to the Polytechnic University for its support in organizing the exhibition and its sensitive attention to the Gagarin family's memorable date.

"When creating this exhibition, we remembered how meticulously and thoughtfully Elena Dmitrievna approached the display of her works," Marina said. "We made every effort to convey the spirit of her paintings in our new university space. We received invaluable assistance from Elena Dmitrievna's friend and colleague, artist and teacher Olga Leonidovna, as well as her loyal allies from the RGB creative group. For us, this exhibition is a meeting of two worlds: the world of her great-grandfather's precise engineering and the emotional creativity of his great-granddaughter. Through the language of color, Elena Dmitrievna continues the humanitarian tradition of the Gagarin family."

SPbPU Rector Andrey Rudskoy offered a few welcoming remarks: "Today is a significant day for us, because on this day a great man was born who accomplished great things for his country. His achievements are still remembered with reverence and are realized, because he is also remembered as an outstanding engineer. The most important thing for any civilization is to remember its history. This applies to our university as well. We would like to present a gift for Andrey Grigoryevich's anniversary—publish an album of Elena Dmitrievna's artwork. We will present it to our most distinguished guests as a creative legacy of Andrey Gagarin's descendants."

After welcoming remarks, the Polytechnic University rector, along with Andrei Gagarin's great-great-granddaughter, Sofia Korotkova, cut the symbolic ribbon and invited guests to view the exhibition, which occupied three floors of the NIK hall.

Elena Artsutanova was a vibrant artist whose abstract works are a powerful poetry of color. For her, color is the primary carrier of emotion. An active participant in the artistic life of St. Petersburg, a member of the Union of Artists and the Pushkinskaya-10 Art Center, she exhibited her work in Russia and abroad. Elena Dmitrievna was not only an original artist but also a teacher and mentor, bringing together creative people.

The exhibition of Elena Artsutanova's works at the Polytechnic University became a tribute to the Gagarin family.

Beijing, December 23 (Xinhua) — As of December 18, passenger traffic at the Xiwu International Airport in Ereenhot, north China's Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, increased 3.9 percent year-on-year to 315,000 passengers since the beginning of 2025, exceeding the passenger traffic figure recorded in 2024 by 14 days, according to a statement posted on the official website of the Ereenhot city government.

The airport's annual passenger traffic is expected to reach 320,000 person-times in 2025, which is estimated to set another record since the airport's opening.

The Ereenhot–Ulaanbaatar regular air route, which officially opened in July 2025, has become an important channel for cross-border exchanges between China and Mongolia. As of December 18, passenger traffic on this route exceeded 24,000, providing a new source of passenger growth for Sayusu Airport.

The opening of the above-mentioned airline has helped to eliminate the weak link in the external openness of the city of Ereenhot in the field of multi-level transportation and to increase the role of the Saiyusu Airport in the construction of an important bridgehead for Inner Mongolia's opening up of the PRC in the northern direction, according to a statement from the mayor's office of the city of Ereenhot. -0-

Anna Karenina in Guangzhou: How Chinese Readers Are Rediscovering Leo Tolstoy

Guangzhou, Dec. 23 (Xinhua) — "What do you think was the main cause of Anna Karenina's tragedy?" and "How can we find a balance between society, family responsibilities, love, and freedom?" — these are the questions that touch the deepest chords of the soul that were recently posed at the Guangzhou Library in Guangdong Province (southern China).

The Guangzhou Library is currently hosting the exhibition "Leo Tolstoy and His World," a traveling exhibition traveling through Guangzhou, Foshan, and Shenzhen. It features over 200 unique images reflecting the life of the renowned Russian writer Leo Tolstoy. The exhibition runs until December 28.

ANNA'S FATE IS IN YOUR HANDS

At the exhibition site, an interactive mini-script, "Anna's Choice," immerses readers in the story of Anna Karenina. The script distills this grand epic into five key scenes, and readers, assuming the role of "Anna," answer questions prepared by library staff and make decisions at pivotal moments throughout all five acts. Each choice leads to different plot threads, revealing alternative endings for Anna. By making choices for her at key crossroads in her life, readers ultimately create their own ending.

"Freedom must be prioritized over responsibility; a person cannot have absolute freedom," one reader wrote at the end of "Return to the Family." Those who discovered the ending of "New Life" for Anna are completing her internal monologues on the pages: "Trust your heart," "I am the most important!" "Love is far less important than being yourself. I will live for myself, do what I want, I still have so much time!" These reader reviews and notes have now filled six pages and continue to grow.

"We strive to overcome the sense of distance associated with 'out-of-reach classics' and restore the literary masterpiece, created nearly 150 years ago, to its ability to engage in a vibrant dialogue with modern audiences," says the exhibition's curator from the Guangzhou Library, adding that when young people immerse themselves in the role through an interactive mini-scenario, the barriers of time and space between them and Anna disappear, leaving only an emotional connection. Her dilemmas in love, social pressure, and self-discovery—all of these are still felt by many today.

CLASSICS IN A NEW FORMAT

With the goal of engaging as many readers, especially younger generations, with classic literature, the exhibition introduced lighter, more interactive formats. These included a voting wall based on the documentary source "The Last Diary of Leo Tolstoy," as well as an online challenge, "My Energetic Day with Leo Tolstoy." To date, over 200 readers have participated in this event, sharing their active daily routines on social media using the hashtag. Some noted Leo Tolstoy's schedule as "incredibly busy," admiring his energy; others left comments like, "Leo Tolstoy's day was so busy and varied, and my day is no less filled with joy and fun!"

The library also organized a creative writing workshop based on Leo Tolstoy's novel "Resurrection." Participants are invited to write an "inner monologue" from a character's perspective and then perform it on stage. This "reading plus creativity plus performance" format encourages the public to discover classic works through a personalized approach and create new content based on them. After the event, many readers admitted to being "strongly impressed."

"It's very touching," says Huang Zhaoran, a reader from Guangzhou. "Especially after delving into the heroine's inner world, my previous opinion regarding her atoning act has completely changed." She says the events have enabled her to read two of Leo Tolstoy's books in their entirety, and the everyday details of the writer at the exhibition allowed her to get closer to the literary genius's inner world.

This isn't the first time the Guangzhou Library has held such events. Previously, it invited readers to rewrite Chekhov's stories in the Guangdong (Cantonese) dialect. It also organized a themed "Literary Feast," where excerpts about food from "Dream of the Red Chamber," one of China's four classic novels, were presented in the form of a "plate service," turning reading into a kind of "gastronomic ritual."

As the library's representative explained, all these efforts are essentially an answer to a fundamental question: in an age of fragmented information and diverse entertainment, how can we re-engage people with rich classics? Our answer is to enhance the reading experience, interactivity, and collaborative creativity. When readers feel connected to the classics, that they can participate in the process and leave their mark, deep reading happens naturally. -0-

Brazilian Media: From Jingdezhen to Hengzhou: China's Urban Specialization Phenomenon

On November 14, the Brazilian magazine Forum published an article titled “China’s Flower Tea Capital: A World-Class Phenomenon of Urban Specialization.”

In China, some cities specialize in the production of specific products, which not only have become global industry benchmarks but also have a significant impact on international trade. This model of specialization drives economic growth and allows China to stand out in many areas. For example, the city of Jingdezhen in Jiangxi Province is renowned for its high-quality porcelain, while Hengzhou in the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region has gained attention as a leading producer of jasmine tea.

Another successful example is Yunyang County, Chongqing Municipality. Taking advantage of its mountain climate and ideal growing conditions, the county specializes in chrysanthemum production. The Sanxia Yangju grown here is in high demand on the international market.

The success of cities like Yunyang is directly linked to China's specialization policy, which aims to help cities become leaders in specific industries. The logic behind this model is to create economies of scale, meaning that many companies producing similar products are concentrated in a single region. This facilitates production, allowing companies to share suppliers, skilled labor, and infrastructure, thereby increasing production efficiency and global competitiveness.

Furthermore, by associating products with a specific city, such as "Hengzhou jasmine tea" or "Jingdezhen porcelain," China adds additional value to its products. Consumers are willing to pay a premium for products from cities with long-standing traditions and superior quality.

The Chinese government also provides significant support to such cities. These support measures help them strengthen their positions as high-quality manufacturing hubs and participate in global trade competition.

This specialization also aligns with China's export diversification strategy. Specialized cities like Yunyang help China move away from its reliance on commodity exports, enabling it to export high-quality products with greater added value to the global market.

This model of specialization is crucial to China's growth. It has helped China become a global leader in many industries. By focusing on quality, innovation, and sustainability, China is strengthening its position as a global economic powerhouse.

Hainan in a New Era: New Opportunities and Horizons for Russians

HAINAN, Dec. 23 (Xinhua) — China on Dec. 18 launched independent customs operations throughout the Hainan Free Trade Port (HFTP), the world's largest by area, demonstrating China's unwavering determination and confidence in expanding high-level opening-up.

In recent years, this amazing island has attracted more and more Russians not only for its tropical landscapes, but also for new opportunities for work and life.

ENTREPRENEURIAL BOOM IN THE TROPICS

The dynamic development of the Hainan Island FTA is evident from a number of indicators. Since 2020, more than 9,600 foreign-invested enterprises from over 170 countries and regions have been established in the province. A total of 75 container shipping routes pass through Hainan, 36 of which are foreign trade routes.

Dmitry, a Russian, arrived in Sanya in 2005 and fell in love with this warm region at first sight. He and his wife have now owned an imported grocery store in the city for almost ten years.

He recalls that when he first arrived in Sanya, there were only a few traffic lights, and high-speed trains were a distant dream. At the beginning of his business, the biggest challenge was logistics – how to deliver goods to the island, especially products that needed to be kept refrigerated or frozen?

"Hainan is making progress every year. Over the past 20 years, the transport network here has been steadily developing, just like the island itself," he noted, expressing hope that in the future, thanks to the launch of independent customs operations throughout the Hainan Free Trade Zone, importing duty-free goods will become even more convenient.

As a reminder, under the new regime, the tropical island, covering over 30,000 square kilometers, has been declared a special customs control zone. Foreign companies will be able to take advantage of a business climate more in line with international standards, lower tax rates and production costs, and use Hainan as a platform for entering the vast mainland Chinese market.

The share of duty-free goods in the Hainan Free Trade Zone will increase from 21 percent to 74 percent, and the range of goods available on Hainan Island will grow from approximately 1,900 to 6,600. Imported products whose added value after processing in Hainan reaches at least 30 percent of their original value will be allowed to be imported for sale in other regions of China without customs duties.

WHAT SURPRISES YOU ABOUT "EAST HAWAII"

As Hainan strives to become a hub for international tourism and consumption, the number of foreign tourists here is rapidly growing. This is clearly demonstrated by the growing popularity of inbound tourism in the coastal city of Sanya.

According to data, in the first half of 2025, the tourist flow from Russia to Sanya increased by 266.2% year-on-year, accounting for more than 40% of the total number of incoming tourists to the city.

Especially after the Chinese authorities introduced a one-year trial visa-free regime for Russian citizens holding regular passports in September of this year, Russians can be seen everywhere in Sanya – on the beaches, at the sights, and in the business districts.

"I often travel to Russia to promote Sanya's tourism resources," said Anastasia, who has lived in Sanya for seven years and is involved in developing the international tourism market.

According to the girl, with the resumption of an increasing number of direct routes, as well as China's introduction of a convenient visa-free policy and simplified payment terms, it has become much easier for Russians to travel to Sanya.

To improve the quality of service for Russian tourists, Sanya service staff have recently been intensively attending Russian language courses, quickly mastering common expressions on topics such as hotel check-in and tourist attraction recommendations. A Russian-language service has also been launched on the city's hotline. In areas with the largest concentrations of Russian tourists, 76 bus stop signs have been updated with Russian-language text.

Furthermore, most star hotels and major tourist areas have installed ATMs accepting foreign bank cards. As of September 2025, Sanya had 479 ATMs accepting cash withdrawals from foreign cards, including Russian ones. At the same time, the city is actively promoting foreign versions of Alipay and WeChat Pay, making mobile payments easier for Russian visitors.

FROM "GUEST" TO "HOST"

The secret to this tropical island's appeal lies in the wide range of amenities designed to meet the everyday needs of foreigners. From accommodation, healthcare, and education to household needs and personal security, the internationally acclaimed service system is helping more and more foreigners transform from visitors to permanent residents.

"When I first came here three years ago, I was worried I'd have trouble enrolling my child in kindergarten," said Vasilyeva, a Moscow resident who applied with her husband for an apartment under the "Housing Subsidy for Highly Qualified Specialists" program.

Since she and her husband are Hainan Talent Card holders (a Hainan Province privilege card for highly skilled professionals, entitling them to various service-related benefits throughout the province), they unexpectedly successfully enrolled their child in kindergarten the day after their arrival.

"Now we can use a Russian bank card to buy bread. Even the security guard in our neighborhood says 'good morning' in Russian," she added, noting that they already feel at home here.

As a reminder, Sanya authorities, actively pursuing a policy of attracting foreign specialists as part of the construction of the Hainan Free Trade Zone, have introduced a visa-free regime for citizens of 86 countries and are simultaneously issuing work permits and residence permits at their place of employment.

As of May 2025, over 700 foreigners in Sanya have used the one-stop service to jointly apply for the two certificates, and document processing times have been reduced by 60 percent compared to the previous period. Furthermore, those with the Hainan Talent Card are entitled to a range of benefits, such as housing subsidies, educational enrollment for children, and health insurance.

Furthermore, foreigners with a lifetime residence permit no longer need to have their documents notarized to register a foreign-owned enterprise. This measure has greatly benefited this category of individuals.

Hainan, once an underdeveloped border outpost, became China's largest special economic zone in 1988. A master plan published in 2020 set the goal of transforming the island into a high-level free trade zone with global influence by mid-century. The introduction of independent customs operations throughout the Hainan Free Trade Zone will attract more foreigners to live, work, and travel on the island.

Faculty from the Institute of Biomedical Systems and Biotechnology, together with the Open Education Center of Peter the Great St. Petersburg Polytechnic University, have developed an educational course, "Nutrition: Modern Approaches and Digital Tools." The project is being implemented with the support of the federal program "Priority 2030." This educational program is strategically important for the implementation of national priorities outlined in the Strategy for Scientific and Technological Development of the Russian Federation, the national project "Healthcare," and the "Digital Economy of the Russian Federation" program.

The development of the online course in nutrition was prompted by the launch of the master's program "Nutrition in the Food Industry" at the IBSiB Higher School of Biotechnology and Food Production in 2019, which has proven highly popular among students. To date, more than 40 students have successfully completed it. The program is aimed at training nutrition technologists capable of developing products and diets to maintain and improve public health and develop a healthy food industry. The Higher School also regularly received requests for distance learning in advanced training programs in nutrition.

The new online course "Nutrition: Modern Approaches and Digital Tools" is designed as a comprehensive educational program for advanced training: from the fundamentals of digestive physiology, the nutrient composition of food, and diet planning methodology to the scientific principles of shaping the gut microbiome and creating functional foods, including an introduction to the popular modern healthy lifestyle trend of nutritional biohacking. The program is designed for food industry professionals, nutritionists, fitness industry professionals, students and teachers, as well as anyone interested in healthy eating or looking to master a new profession.

Our course's uniqueness lies in its ability to develop students' knowledge not only of current scientific aspects in the field of healthy nutrition but also of practical skills acquired through case studies and calculations using both traditional approaches and modern digital technologies. Commercial nutrition courses often focus on theoretical aspects or "helpful tips" without integrating modern digital tools, or simply offer an introduction to artificial intelligence without mastering the theoretical foundation. Furthermore, a wealth of unsubstantiated or contradictory nutritional information is circulating online, hindering people from making informed choices. We clearly distinguish between proven methods and popular but unsubstantiated trends, fostering critical thinking in our students. This also applies to the verification and comparative analysis of recommendations generated by artificial intelligence," commented Natalia Barsukova, project director and associate professor at the Higher School of Biotechnology and Food Production at the Institute of Cardiology and Biotechnology (IBBS), highlighting the distinctive features of the course developed by the Polytechnics.

During the course, participants will not only acquire up-to-date knowledge in nutrition science but also learn to apply artificial intelligence tools to solve everyday tasks: from analyzing actual nutrition and nutritional status to calculating the nutritional value of diets and creating personalized nutrition recommendations.

The course consists of 20 topics grouped into four modules. The first three modules contain theoretical materials and practical assignments, including video lectures covering the main topics; longreads and presentations; assignments for independent study; and quizzes. The fourth module includes practical exercises in the form of video lessons; and independent case studies using the Scientific Nutrition Analysis Web Tool (NIAP). A final assessment (test) is included at the end of the course.

The course "Nutrition: Modern Approaches and Digital Tools" was developed in collaboration with Nutrient Planner, the developer of the NIAP web service. Training in the program will begin in 2026.

Almaty, December 23 /Xinhua/ — Attempts by some Japanese politicians to discuss "contingents" and "scenarios" surrounding China's Taiwan appear not just careless, but politically irresponsible, according to Serik Korzhumbayev, editor-in-chief of the DKnews.kz news agency.

The expert noted that the latest Kyodo Tsushin poll in Japan recorded the first significant decline in support for Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi's cabinet. While the figure remains high at 67.5 percent, the dynamics and structure of the responses demonstrate the growing internal tensions Tokyo is facing amid its foreign policy and fiscal decisions.

"A 2.4 percentage point decline in the rating in a month isn't a crisis, but it is a clear signal. Japanese society is beginning to associate the government's foreign policy rhetoric with direct economic consequences for the country," stated S. Korzhumbayev.

He emphasized that the key trigger was the prime minister's controversial parliamentary comment about a possible "Taiwan scenario," which was described as a potential threat to Japan's survival. Such statements are already negatively impacting economic relations with China.

“It’s important to emphasize: this is not about freedom of speech, but about responsibility for one’s words,” the expert commented.

According to S. Korzhumbaev, attempts by some Japanese politicians to discuss "contingencies" and "scenarios" surrounding China's Taiwan appear not just careless, but politically irresponsible. "Given Japan's close economic interdependence with China—from trade and investment to supply chains and industrial cooperation—such rhetoric is inevitably perceived as a destabilizing factor," he noted.

"For countries observing Japan from the outside—including those in Central Asia—this is an important indicator. Japan's economy is deeply integrated into Asian supply chains, and a deterioration in dialogue with China inevitably increases the vulnerability of Japanese businesses, especially in the context of a global slowdown," concluded S. Korzhumbayev.
