The Rector of the State University of Management took part in the third meeting of the Rectors' Club, which was held in the Arguments and Facts press center.

Meetings of heads of higher education institutions and colleges allow for the coordination of training of specialists, avoiding duplication of educational programs, understanding what technologies and equipment are needed to teach students, and discussing how the labor market is changing.

The meeting included two sessions: the first was devoted to the future of higher and secondary vocational education and key changes in the system of training specialists, and the second focused on interaction with the business community.

First Deputy Minister of Education of Russia Alexander Bugaev presented the key aspects of the education development strategy, which is based on traditional approaches and includes two stages: preparatory (2025-2026) and the subsequent implementation stage.

Deputy Minister of Science and Higher Education Olga Petrova noted that this year the implementation of all key areas in the educational system, started earlier, will continue, with special attention being paid to helping student families. She emphasized that it is necessary to "prepare graduate professionals with an active civic position, aware of their role in the development of the country's technological sovereignty.

The head of the State University of Management Vladimir Stroyev spoke about the Pre-University of the State University of Management, where schoolchildren of the 10th and 11th grades study. The rector noted that despite the high requirements (only excellent students), the number of people wishing to enroll there increases every year. Vladimir Stroyev also introduced the audience to the areas of student training implemented at the State University of Management.

"The university is actively developing new areas of training, especially in the field of management. This year, interest in management programs in various industries has noticeably increased: from construction to show business. An important aspect of the university's development has become the creation of high-quality media content. We have three professional studios for producing video materials. This is especially relevant, given that today's youth is a demanding audience, well versed in the media space," he added.

Also at the meeting, representatives of the government, universities and the expert community discussed the readiness of the secondary vocational education and higher education sector for the new academic year, the progress and tasks of transforming universities, state youth policy and the development of vocational education infrastructure.

At the end of the meeting, those gathered agreed that for the successful development of the education system, it is important for all its elements to cooperate and coordinate their actions to ensure a comfortable transition for students between different levels of education and achieve a synergistic effect.

The 1st All-Russian Festival of Student Families was held at Bauman Moscow State Technical University on July 17–18. The festival brought together representatives of universities from all over the country to discuss current issues of supporting student families and became a significant platform for the formation of a unified policy to support young families in the higher education system. Olga Yakovleva, a leading specialist in the youth policy department at SPbGASU, took part in the festival.

“In the context of modern socio-economic challenges, such events are of particular importance, allowing us to develop uniform standards for supporting young families, exchange best practices between universities, and create favorable conditions for combining study and family life,” said Olga Yakovleva.

The participants' attention was particularly drawn to the presentation of the draft standard for family policy in universities, developed by the Russian Ministry of Education and Science. "Participation in the festival allowed us not only to get acquainted with the best practices of other universities, but also to make proposals for improving the system of support for student families. SPbGASU has completed laboratory tests of full-scale reinforced concrete beams reinforced with an external reinforcement system made of composite materials

As part of the grant competition for the implementation of research work by scientific and pedagogical staff of SPbGASU, laboratory tests of full-scale reinforced concrete beams reinforced with an external reinforcement system made of composite materials have been completed in the interdepartmental laboratory of our university.

Reinforcement with external reinforcement made of composite materials allows to increase the load-bearing capacity, reduce deflections and crack width without increasing the mass of the reinforced structure.

The tests were carried out by senior lecturer of the Department of Reinforced Concrete and Stone Structures Anastasia Denisova and senior laboratory assistant of the interdepartmental laboratory Egor Kuzhman under the scientific supervision of associate professor of the Department of Reinforced Concrete and Stone Structures Alexey Shekhovtsov.

The purpose of the tests was to evaluate the work of reinforced structures at different stages taking into account the loading history. Three precast reinforced concrete beams of rectangular cross-section with dimensions of 300×400 mm, length of 3300 mm, weight of 1 t were tested.

First, beams were tested without reinforcement to simulate the operation of the structure during the operational phase. The sample was not brought to failure at this stage. Then, the beams were reinforced with external reinforcement and the reinforced beams were tested again until complete failure, simulating the operation of the structure after reinforcement during the operational phase.

During the tests, the researchers monitored the vertical displacement of the sample, the relative deformations of the concrete and composite material, the width of the crack opening, the loads of crack formation, destruction, the pattern of crack formation, the nature of destruction, etc.

The research is an important stage in assessing the effectiveness of modern methods of strengthening reinforced concrete structures and in developing methods for their design, and also allows obtaining data for the further implementation of these technologies in construction practice.

SPbPU has established personal scholarships in honor of legendary professors of the PhysMech Department

The Academic Council of SPbPU adopted the Regulation on the personalized scholarships of the Physics and Mechanics Institute. Starting from the 2025/2026 academic year, the best Physics and Mechanics Master's students will start receiving personalized scholarships based on the results of the competition, named after outstanding professors who worked at the Physics and Mechanics Faculty of the Polytechnic University. The scholarships will be paid from the income from the management of the target capital "Development of scientific, educational, youth and educational projects of Physics and Mechanics".

"Last year, thanks to the activity of graduates and employees, a target capital was formed at PhysMech," said Nikolai Ivanov, Acting Director of the Physics and Mechanics Institute. Students of the master's program in the field of "Mechanics and Mathematical Modeling" will be awarded a scholarship named after Ivan Vsevolodovich Meshchersky.

I. V. Meshchersky (1859–1935) was a Russian scientist and mechanic, the founder of the mechanics of variable mass systems. When the St. Petersburg Polytechnic Institute opened, he was invited to the position of professor of the theoretical mechanics department and played a decisive role in the development of this discipline. It was Ivan Meshchersky’s lecture on theoretical mechanics for students of all technical departments that became the first lecture given at the newly opened Polytechnic Institute. Meshchersky was one of those scientists who sought to bring the teaching of mechanics closer to the needs of engineering practice; he created the classic “Collection of Problems in Theoretical Mechanics” and introduced practical classes for students to solve problems. In 1907–1908, he served as director of the St. Petersburg Polytechnic Institute.

Students of the Master's program in the field of "Applied Mathematics and Physics" will be awarded a scholarship named after Lev Gerasimovich Loitsyansky.

L. G. Loitsyansky (1900–1991) was a Soviet scientist and mechanic, the founder and first head of the Department of Hydroaerodynamics at the Faculty of Physics and Mathematics (1935–1975), and a leading specialist in boundary layer and turbulence theory. He began his teaching career in 1922 as an assistant to Professor A. A. Friedman at the Department of Theoretical Mechanics. L. G. Loitsyansky is the author of fundamental monographs and textbooks on hydrogasdynamics and theoretical mechanics. L. G. Loitsyansky’s textbook “Mechanics of Liquids and Gases” is still a reference book for both undergraduate and graduate students, as well as specialists in hydroaerodynamics. The scientific school of physical mechanics of liquids and gases created by Lev Gerasimovich is one of the leading schools in the country and is supported and developed at SPbPU by his students and the students of his students.

Master's students in the Applied Mechanics program will be awarded a scholarship named after Anatoly Isakovich Lurye.

A. I. Lurye (1901–1980) was a Soviet scientist and mechanic, Corresponding Member of the USSR Academy of Sciences, and the author of fundamental works on theoretical and analytical mechanics, oscillation theory, operational calculus and automatic control theory, shell theory, and linear and nonlinear elasticity theory. The textbook on theoretical mechanics, which he co-authored with his colleague and friend L. G. Loitsyansky, was used by more than one generation of students. From 1944 to 1977, A. I. Lurye’s students occupy a significant place in Russian mechanics and are known throughout the world.

Master's students majoring in Physics will be awarded a scholarship named after Boris Pavlovich Konstantinov.

B. P. Konstantinov (1910–1969) was a Soviet physicist and academician of the USSR Academy of Sciences. His scientific interests were extremely broad: he published works on acoustics, physical chemistry, isotope physics, plasma physics and the problem of controlled thermonuclear fusion, and astrophysics. As head of a laboratory at the Physicotechnical Institute (now named after A. F. Ioffe), from 1947 Boris Pavlovich worked part-time at the Leningrad Polytechnic Institute, headed the department of technical physics, and then organized several departments at the FMP: experimental nuclear physics, isotope physics, and biophysics. Troitsky (1927–2004) was a graduate of Anatoly Isakovich Lurye's school, the organizer and first head of the Department of Computational Mathematics of the Faculty of Physics and Mechanics (in 1989 the department was named Applied Mathematics), and the Dean of the Faculty of Physics and Mechanics (1966–1973). V. A. Troitsky studied the theory of optimal processes, with an emphasis on the development and application of analytical and numerical methods for solving problems of optimizing mechanical systems. Under the supervision of Professor Troitsky, the department conducted scientific research in the field of developing numerical methods for solving various problems in mechanics.

Personal scholarships of PhysMech will be awarded each semester on a competitive basis to master's students who have demonstrated high achievements in academic and research activities. The scholarship amount in the 2025/2026 academic year will be 6,000 rubles per month. The competition will be held in the first ten days of September. During the tour of the reverse engineering laboratory, the guests were introduced to the advanced equipment used by university scientists to conduct R&D in the interests of enterprises in the real sector of the economy, in particular, to create digital twins of various parts and units of agricultural and municipal equipment, including foreign-made ones.

International Summer in Peterhof: Foreign Students Discover Russia's Pearl

During the summer language and cultural camp, foreign students of our university went on an excursion to Peterhof, the famous residence of Russian emperors and one of the most impressive palace and park ensembles in the world. Students from nine countries took part in the trip: India, Zambia, Burundi, Kenya, Ethiopia, Angola, Guinea-Bissau, Cameroon and Cambodia.

From the first minutes of visiting the Grand Peterhof Palace, the students were immersed in the era of luxury and grandeur of the Russian Empire. They saw the state rooms decorated with gold, crystal and paintings, and also learned about the lives of the Russian tsars.

After the tour of the palace, the students went to explore the famous parks of Peterhof. In the Upper Garden, they were greeted by well-kept alleys and symmetrical fountains, and in the Lower Park, a stunning view of the Gulf of Finland and the Chess Mountain cascade. The culmination was the legendary Samson fountain, symbolizing Russia's victory in the Northern War.

But the real surprise for the participants were the famous Peterhof joke fountains! Unprepared for such a fun challenge, the students all fell under the streams of water secretly beating from under the ground. Everyone got wet, but this only added to the laughter and joy.

With friends and our teacher Elizaveta, we went on an amazing excursion to Peterhof! It was my first encounter with this amazing place. It exceeded all expectations. Our guide took us around the palace and told us its history so fascinatingly that time flew by. This trip is not just an excursion, but part of a larger summer camp program, where students study Russian, participate in master classes, and get acquainted with Russian culture. Polytechnicians completed a key stage of R&D with the company "UK "KER-Holding"

The staff of the Research Laboratory "Laser and Additive Technologies" of the Institute of Metallurgy and Metallurgy of the St. Petersburg Polytechnic University completed a key stage of R&D within the framework of the delivery of a technological complex for laser powder cladding for the LLC "UK "KER-Holding".

Engineers from the Research Laboratory "LiAT" of the Institute of Metallurgy and Metallurgy of the St. Petersburg Polytechnic University completed the practical part of the project aimed at transferring laser surfacing technologies for the restoration of gas turbine engine components, and conducted acceptance tests of the previously delivered laser powder surfacing technological complex.

The work was carried out as part of the second stage of R & D. The main objective was to implement and test laser cladding modes on two types of parts and control samples, including components made of heat-resistant nickel superalloys. The focus of the project was the restoration of the SGT-300 first-stage nozzle blades and the first-stage working blades of the Taurus 60 gas turbine engine.

All stages were accompanied by a full technological cycle: coordination of sample geometry, fluorescent testing for cracks, development of technological instructions, design and manufacture of equipment.

Mikhail Kuznetsov, Head of the Research Laboratory "LiAT" of the SPbPU Institute of Metallurgy and Metallurgy, noted: The laboratory staff successfully carried out acceptance tests of the laser cladding complex and demonstrated the applicability of the developed technologies taking into account the specifics of real production conditions. At the next stage, it is planned to equip the complex with a sealed chamber.

Long-term cooperation with UK KER-Holding LLC is one of the examples of how scientific developments of the Scientific Research Laboratory LiAT of IMMiT SPbPU find real application in industry. This is an important step towards the introduction of import-substituting technologies in the field of aviation and power engineering.

Meditation strengthens human speech control mechanisms

Meditation can not only improve emotional well-being, but also influence the speech functions of the brain, according to the results of a research project by a bachelor's degree graduate Humanitarian Institute Novosibirsk State University in the field of "Fundamental and Applied Linguistics" by Nadezhda Istomina. The results were obtained using electroencephalography (EEG) and concern both speech and motor (non-speech) control of behavior. Her project is part of a larger study conducted by a team led by the head of the laboratory of psychological genetics of the ICG SB RAS and the department of fundamental and applied linguistics of the Humanities Institute of NSU, Doctor of Philosophy Alexander Savostyanov.

— We studied how brain reactions differ in people who practice meditation and those who do not. It turned out that the brain of meditating participants reacts more actively to speech errors. Their neural response was stronger and faster. This indicates a more developed mechanism of speech control, — said Nadezhda Istomina.

The experiments were conducted at the Baikal Meditation Center in Buryatia back in 2018, where the participants were people who had been practicing Buddhist samadhi meditation for a long time, and a control group that had no meditative experience. A total of 204 EEG recordings were analyzed. The participants performed two tasks: stopping a previously started movement on a signal (motor control) and looking for grammatical errors in sentences (speech control).

— The example sentences were as simple as possible, so that even a child could handle them. This helped us focus on the brain’s reaction, not on the complexity of the text. We didn’t want to test grammar knowledge, but to understand how quickly and vividly the brain reacts to an error, — Nadezhda explained.

The most striking differences between the groups were found in speech control. Meditators showed a stronger neural response to speech errors than non-meditators. This effect was independent of age, gender, or personality traits such as anxiety.

For motor control, the differences were less pronounced.

"Here, personality traits played a major role – anxiety, neuroticism level and age. The influence of meditation itself was weaker," she noted.

However, one of the most interesting discoveries concerned the relationship between speech and motor control. Meditators showed a significant correlation between these two systems in the left frontal lobe of the cerebral cortex – in Broca's area, which is responsible for controlling the correctness of speech. No such relationship was observed in the control group. This may indicate that the brain of meditators coordinates speech and motor processes more closely.

"We have shown for the first time that meditation can not only improve general health, but also establish new connections between speech and motor functions in the brain. This opens up interesting prospects – both for science and, possibly, for practice," Nadezhda emphasized.

The study is not yet complete — the work is ongoing, and in the future it is planned to study other possible correlations and mechanisms of the influence of meditative practices on cognitive functions. The team working on the project hopes that the data obtained will help to better understand how meditation affects the brain, and possibly use this knowledge in the treatment of speech disorders or cognitive disorders.

The government has allocated about 52 billion rubles for state support for the formation of long-term savings of citizens

The long-term savings program for citizens was launched in 2024 on the instructions of the President of Russia. The program will give people the opportunity to receive additional income in the future. The state will co-finance these funds for 10 years, that is, add up to 36 thousand rubles per year. Savings will be protected. The guarantee system is the same as when opening deposits, but the insurance amount is twice as large – 2.8 million rubles.

Savings can be used as additional income after 15 years of participation in the program or upon reaching the age of 55 for women and 60 for men. The funds can be withdrawn at any time, but early withdrawal without loss of income is possible in the event of special life situations – for expensive treatment or the loss of a breadwinner.
