Day of liberation of Novorossiysk from Nazi troops

On September 16, 1943, the city of Novorossiysk was completely liberated from the fascist invaders. This victory stopped the Wehrmacht's advance in the southern direction, forced them to leave the Caucasus and abandon attempts to reach the Baku oil wells, and also returned the waters of the Black, Azov and Caspian Seas under the full control of the Soviet fleet.

The German army captured Novorossiysk in early September 1942. The enemy had built over 300 defensive structures in the city, dug five lines of trenches, installed barbed wire and about 30 thousand mines. Naval mines were also installed at the entrance to the port, and guns and machine guns were placed on all the piers and moles. The city was considered impregnable from the sea.

The Battle of Novorossiysk, which lasted 225 days, began on February 4, 1943, with a landing in the area of the village of Stanichki under the command of Major Caesar Kunikov. Initially, the operation was planned as a diversionary strike, but it turned out to be a key stage of the battle. 400 paratroopers managed to capture a coastal bridgehead of no more than 30 square kilometers. The sea was behind them, the enemy was ahead, and there was nowhere to retreat. At first, the Red Army soldiers repelled 15-20 attacks per day. On the third day, Major Kunikov died. At the cost of incredible efforts, the bridgehead was held, reinforcements began to arrive, and provisions and ammunition were delivered from the air. This patch of land, which had constantly threatened the Nazis' right flank for more than seven months, went down in history under the name Malaya Zemlya.

It is interesting that the future General Secretary of the CPSU Leonid Brezhnev, a colonel in those years and head of the political department of the 18th Army, fought on Malaya Zemlya. He was wounded there and later received the Order of the Patriotic War, 1st degree, for his participation in the battles for the liberation of Novorossiysk.

The main assault began on September 10, 1943, with three groups of troops, one of which attacked from Malaya Zemlya, the second from the Tuapse Highway, and the third from the sea. The operation was supported from the air by 148 aircraft. Particularly heavy fighting took place for the area of the Krasny Oktyabr cement plant, the village of Turkish Garden, the power plant, the Proletary cement plant, and Sakharnaya Golova Mountain. Thanks to the courage and coordinated actions of the army and navy, Novorossiysk was completely cleared of the enemy by 10 a.m. on September 16.

The contribution of the sapper units to the victory is worth mentioning separately. It was they, under the leadership of engineer captain Kirill Turbaevsky, who made Malaya Zemlya impregnable, digging a trench in the rocky ground with titanic efforts and setting up hundreds of firing points and hidden observation posts. In September 1943, sappers, under heavy fire from the Germans from Sakharnaya Golova, established a crossing over Kamyshovskaya Gully, manually pouring a stone bridge along which Soviet tanks entered the city. And after the end of the fighting, they also freed the city from the enemy legacy in the form of tens of thousands of mines.

For their bravery in the battles for Novorossiysk, 19 units and formations of the Red Army received the honorary title of "Novorossiysk", 21 defenders of the city and Malaya Zemlya were awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union, hundreds of fighters received orders and medals. And on September 14, 1973, in honor of the 30th anniversary of liberation, Novorossiysk received the title of Hero City.

Eternal glory to the defenders of the Motherland!

NSU creates a stand for testing the drone's propeller-motor group

Translation. Region: Russian Federal

An important disclaimer is at the bottom of this article.

Egor Pobezhimov, 2nd year master's student Faculty of Mechanics and Mathematics of NSU, is implementing a project to create a test stand for a propeller-motor group with a thrust of up to 2 kg for unmanned aerial vehicles. The project became one of the winners of the federal competition "Student Startup", within the framework of which budding entrepreneurs are allocated 1 million rubles for a period of one year.

— The idea of the project arose from university research and engineering practice: a tool for objective analysis of the propeller-motor group was needed, which was lacking on the market. Currently, when designing and testing drones, there is an acute shortage of available full-featured stands. Existing solutions are either too expensive or do not take into account the vibroacoustic characteristics that are critically important for increasing efficiency and improving the operation of UAVs, — says Egor Pobezhimov.

So, now typical tests of VMG in design bureaus or laboratories are carried out manually: when working on a new prototype, the selection of propellers, modes, recording of parameters and data processing take from 2-3 weeks to 1-2 months. If we talk about the testing process itself, then one test takes on average one to two days. And to conduct full-fledged tests, it is necessary to conduct more than a dozen such tests.

— The stand and the availability of standardized test scenarios will reduce this time to two hours and obtain a larger set of data from which more information can be extracted. This directly reduces the cost: less time for specialists, less expenses on full-scale flights and replacement of failed components, — Yegor explains.

The solutions existing on the market have a number of limitations: they measure only basic parameters (thrust and current) and involve manual testing scenarios. The stand created at NSU comprehensively measures not only basic parameters (thrust, speed, electrical characteristics), but also vibrations and acoustic noise, provides a synchronous analysis of the power plant operation, which allows identifying anomalies and optimizing characteristics.

— Unlike existing solutions, our stand combines mechanics, electronics and software into a single system. Our product includes automated standard tests and built-in analysis and visualization. In addition, we will have a modular design with the ability to scale. And an important point: we offer not only equipment, but also testing services, which our competitors do not have, — adds Egor.

The project started in 2024. At present, the components and implementation algorithm have been defined; the concept of software and hardware parts has been developed, i.e. the architecture and methods of receiving and exchanging information between the source sensors, control software and the user. In addition, the necessary laboratory base has been created at NSU, where further work on the project will be carried out. A team has been formed, and agreements have been reached with design bureaus on testing.

The grant funds will be used for design, purchasing components, assembling and debugging the system, calibrating sensors and developing software, as well as paying for the team's work, registering patents, marketing and launching it to market.

It is expected that in a year a fully operational stand will be ready, which is a compact cubic frame with vibration isolation and protection against screw destruction, and also includes sensors for measuring various parameters and a controller. As for the software, a desktop application will be created, including an interface for collecting, storing and analyzing data, test scenarios. The development language is Python and C, and in the future it is also possible to integrate machine learning methods for predictive diagnostics.

The solution will find application in design bureaus engaged in the development of UAVs, for the selection of propeller-motor groups and the detection of defects; in production for quality and reliability control; in the "smart city" for reducing noise and improving the operation of delivery drones, etc.

During his working visit to the Arab Republic of Egypt (Cairo), Deputy Prime Minister of Russia Alexey Overchuk met with the Chairman of the General Authority of the Suez Canal Economic Zone Walid Gamaleddin and became familiar with the progress of the creation of the Russian Industrial Zone (RIZ) in the Suez Canal Economic Zone.

During a meeting with the Chairman of the General Authority of the Suez Canal Economic Zone, Alexey Overchuk noted that the project to create a Russian industrial zone in the Suez Canal economic zone is strategic for our country and has great potential in the context of providing unique opportunities for the development of investment and innovation cooperation, industrial growth in the two countries and the creation of new jobs.

The Deputy Prime Minister emphasized that the Ain Sokhna industrial zone is one of the world's largest industrial agglomerations with direct access to the Ain Sokhna port, which provides convenient access to global markets, primarily the markets of the global South.

The Suez Canal Economic Zone is a complex with six sea ports, providing 20% of the world's container shipping and 10% of maritime trade, and four industrial zones. Along the border of the Russian Industrial Zone section there is an electric grid, a road connecting Ain Sokhna with the ports of Suez and Hurghada, a railway freight line; 9 km away is a freight port with modern container and bulk terminals. The section itself already has treatment facilities and an electrical substation.

The Russian delegation in Cairo, led by Alexey Overchuk, includes representatives of relevant government agencies, businesses and business associations. "It is very important to familiarize Russian businesses with the opportunities provided in the zone by tax and customs preferences, project support conditions and services that open up new opportunities for working in Africa," Alexey Overchuk emphasized.

During the conference dedicated to the implementation of the Russian Industrial Zone project, key issues of the practical implementation of the joint project and further strengthening of bilateral cooperation in the industrial sphere were discussed. Alexey Overchuk recalled the long history of cooperation between the two countries. "The USSR participated in the construction of the Aswan Dam, a number of industrial enterprises, power transmission lines, in the creation of nuclear physics laboratories and in the implementation of work on the peaceful use of atomic energy. Today, we continue the good traditions of long-term cooperation and implement flagship projects – the first El Dabaa Nuclear Power Plant in the country and the Russian Industrial Zone," the Deputy Prime Minister noted.

The intergovernmental agreement signed on behalf of the leaders of Russia and Egypt laid down the basic principles for the implementation of the project, aimed at qualitatively increasing the efficiency of bilateral cooperation and improving the investment climate. "The result should be the emergence of industrial infrastructure under Russian management in Egypt with opportunities for Russian participants in foreign economic activity, the creation of new jobs and long-term cooperation chains," Alexey Overchuk emphasized.

The Deputy Prime Minister noted that Russia sees Africa as one of the fastest growing developing markets and views the Russian Industrial Zone as a gateway to both Egypt and the African continent.

In 2025, both the Russian and Egyptian sides completed the necessary regulatory procedures to move to the practical stage of project implementation. In particular, in May of this year, an agreement was signed in Moscow legally securing the terms of the lease of the land plot of the Russian Industrial Zone by the Russian side.

The Deputy Prime Minister noted that at this stage the Russian operator needs to carry out a large volume of preparatory and construction work. "In parallel, our business needs to understand that such work is being carried out, and prepare its investment decisions for this. Therefore, it is already important to coordinate the efforts of our Government, the Egyptian authorities, the zone operators, as well as its potential residents. These plans need to be coordinated and built, then residents will appear here, enterprises will emerge and new jobs will appear," the Deputy Prime Minister said.

Alexey Overchuk also thanked the Egyptian side for the warm welcome and expressed hope for fruitful cooperation.

Deputy Prime Minister Vitaly Savelyev and Minister of Transport Andrey Nikitin familiarized themselves with the key developments of the advanced engineering school "High Speed Rail Academy" of the Russian University of Transport.

The Academy was opened in December 2023 following the selection results within the framework of the federal project of the Ministry of Education and Science of Russia "Advanced Engineering Schools". The following areas of work are currently being implemented at the Academy: training of engineering personnel and specialists of the new generation, scientific, technical and expert support for the first high-speed highway – HSR-1 Moscow – St. Petersburg at the design and construction stage, the formation of an innovative base for the development of the country's transport industry.

The Deputy Prime Minister and the Minister were shown a digital model of the Moscow-St. Petersburg HSR section, created by students and teachers as part of an end-to-end engineering project. The digital model of the main infrastructure elements of the highway (railway track, roadbed, artificial structures, etc.) allows for an assessment of identified collisions at the design stage.

In the situation center, Vitaly Savelyev and Andrey Nikitin got acquainted with the construction monitoring system, which combines data from online cameras, UAV footage, satellite images and orthophoto plans of the high-speed railway construction sites. The data is updated in real time and shows the progress of work, the number of equipment and specialists, the use of funding and the results of eliminating expert comments.

Scientists from the High-Speed Railway Academy have presented the first measuring complex in Russia for monitoring the geometry of high-speed highway tracks. A special trolley, tested in real conditions, records the slightest deviations of the track from the design.

"The HSR Academy of the Russian University of Transport is a unique scientific center for training highly qualified specialists who will be in demand on HSR lines. Serious technological and personnel potential is being formed here, which will set trends in the development of the country's transport complex," noted Vitaly Savelyev.

Today, 230 students are studying at the Academy in six educational programs. Another 370 students will undergo training in additional professional courses by the end of 2025. The first intake took place in the summer of 2024 – 50 best third-year students from five transport universities in Russia.

The academy's infrastructure includes a multifunctional campus with 34 workplaces, three specialized educational spaces and two educational laboratories. This allows students to work in conditions as close as possible to real engineering practice.

"It is important that the implementation of scientific projects of the High Speed Rail Academy is carried out with the involvement of high-tech partners: JSC Russian Railways, Sinara – Transport Machines, the Moscow City Department of Transport. That is, this is not only research, but also testing of their results in practice with real customers of these projects," emphasized Andrey Nikitin.
