"Can I kiss you?" – RUDN students tell about funny incidents during language internship in Beijing

Translation. Region: Russian Federal

Source: Peoples'Friendship University of Russia –

An important disclaimer is at the bottom of this article.

Too spicy food, unintelligible speech of market vendors and a tennis lesson in Chinese. All these are bits and pieces of impressions of RUDN economics students who went on a two-week language internship at Beijing Language and Culture University.

There were more than 60 people who wanted to go to China from the Faculty of Economics and the Institute of World Economy and Business, so the students had to go through a selection process. In the end, 19 people went on the trip in July, and another 20 will go in August. Preference was given to those who are third-year students in additional education programs, as well as the most active and successful students. Three weeks before departure, the internship organizers held an organizational meeting, where they told the students about the rules of conduct in the country and answered their questions.

"Before the flight to Beijing, we were afraid that there would be problems with communication and with paying for purchases in stores, since we read contradictory information on this matter on the Internet. In the end, the connection worked fine for everyone – we bought Chinese SIM cards on the spot for 100 yuan. The Internet worked from them, and with the VPN turned on, we could also use the usual social networks. Purchases were paid for in cash and with the Alipay app," – Maria Kurevleva, Faculty of Economics, RUDN (Economics and Management, 1st year bachelor's degree).

Competitive method

When the students got to the university, they were met by a local teacher who gave the entire group badges. They simultaneously served as a pass to the university, a personal password for Wi-Fi, and a card for paying for food in the cafeteria. Representatives of the Chinese side did not leave the students until the evening, until they had settled all the issues with the students’ accommodation, their registration, and other nuances.

The next day, the opening ceremony of the internship took place, after which Chinese teachers tested and interviewed each student to determine their language level. And finally, on the third day, the students began their classes. Classes were held every morning from 08:30 to 12:10. One teacher taught for two hours with a ten-minute break – it was a combined lesson on vocabulary, grammar and reading. Then the students were given a 20-minute break, and after that they had two hours of oral speech practice with another teacher.

"The teachers were very nice and explained everything well and in detail. We were not bored in class, we learned new words and repeated them in a playful way, without noticing that we were studying. I would like to memorize the material in this way in all educational institutions," – Maria Kurevleva, Faculty of Economics, RUDN (Economics and Management, 1st year bachelor's degree).

The teachers actively used the competitive method. Stickers were given for correct answers and role-played dialogues, at the last lesson all the points of each student were counted, and the three most active children received a souvenir from the teacher. The following game was used to repeat words: it was necessary to explain as many words as possible to the group in Chinese in a certain time, the one who guessed also received sticker points.

“The students remembered best the words that described cultural realities, the names of local flora and fauna, and words that helped them navigate the area: 北海公园 — Beihai Park, 荷花 — lotus, 熊猫 — panda, 线 — metro line, 路 — street, road. Such words are remembered well when immersed in another linguistic reality,” says Alina Ognyanova, head of the student group, senior lecturer at the RUDN Institute of World Economy and Business.

Instead of a question – a kiss

In their free time, the students also practiced Chinese. And English, which helped them communicate with the locals. According to the students, the Chinese almost always understood what they were saying, but at the market it was sometimes difficult because of the fast, unintelligible speech of the sellers. There were also some cute linguistic curiosities.

"I once said to a Chinese guy instead of 'Can I ask, can I kiss you?' We laughed for a long time!" – Maria Kurevleva, Faculty of Economics, RUDN (Economics and Management major, 1st year bachelor's degree).

In everyday life, the students did not have any particular problems; the group leader came to help when needed. The only thing the students did not expect was that the food in China was so spicy. And even if you asked them to make it not spicy, the Chinese “not spicy” still hit the taste buds noticeably.

Day of the sky

In addition to their university studies, the students immersed themselves in Chinese culture and explored its landmarks. For example, they visited the Temple of Heaven, a park and temple complex built in the 15th century where the third emperor of the Ming Dynasty, Zhu Di, performed rituals and prayed for a good harvest. This place is also famous for its acoustic wonders. One of them is the Echo Wall. If someone speaks on one side of the wall, even very quietly, they can be heard on the other side. There are three special stones near the landmark: when you clap your hands at the first one, you hear an echo once, at the second one – twice, and a triple echo at the third stone. These are the sound attractions. By the way, it is symbolic that the excursion here took place on Sunday, which literally translates from Chinese as "Day of Heaven".

"We also visited the Forbidden City, saw the Great Wall of China and the Summer Palace of Empress Dowager Cixi. But we studied more than just Chinese architecture. We had master classes on fan painting, we were told about kung fu and Chinese medicine. We were also taught how to brew tea correctly and were given six types to try, including white, yellow, red and flower tea," — Maria Kurevleva, RUDN University Faculty of Economics (Economics and Management major, 1st year bachelor's degree).

Dreams of Tennis

During her internship, another RUDN student was able not only to improve her language skills and learn about local traditions and habits, but also to realize one sporting dream.

"There are many sports grounds on our campus: three tennis courts, two basketball courts, two small tennis courts, a football field, and a volleyball field. As soon as we moved in, I realized that I really wanted to play tennis. On the fourth day after classes, we approached the teacher and agreed on a game. And voila – here we are already playing tennis, a Chinese teacher is giving us a lesson, they support us and rejoice in small victories with us! It was a very touching and unforgettable moment," – Daria Barinova, Institute of International Economics and Business, RUDN (International Management major, 3rd year).

Group leader Alina Ognyanova is pleased with the students’ results and notes that they have definitely overcome the language barrier.

"Chinese teachers noted the high motivation of our students, as well as their warm and respectful attitude towards local teachers. The guys showed themselves to be independent, diligent students, in two weeks they managed to bring grammar to a new level, develop reaction speed in different communication situations. They learned new speech cliches, synonyms, which increased their receptivity to audio material, the students began to perceive Chinese speech by ear more effectively," – Alina Ognyanova, head of the student group.

Entrepreneurs are increasingly becoming partners of the Summer in Moscow project

Translation. Region: Russian Federal

Source: Moscow Government – Government of Moscow –

An important disclaimer is at the bottom of this article.

As part of the project "Summer in Moscow" Hundreds of events organized by the capital's entrepreneurs have already taken place. Representatives of the city's small and large companies spoke about the effect of the events held and about future plans for cooperation with the project.

There are several formats of participation for capital companies. Thus, you can become partners of the project "Summer in Moscow". Another format is participation in the special project "Time of Opportunities". It is aimed at entrepreneurs from the sphere of public catering, trade, services, education, creativity, beauty, culture, sports and hotel business. To join the special project, businessmen need to prepare special offers on their sites for residents and guests of the city: for example, hold free events, promotions or provide discounts of 25 percent. From the city, participants receive free PR support, promotion through geo-services, as well as a summer "Business Box" – a set of free tools for developing your business from market leaders.

In addition, business representatives and individuals can use the free urban space booking service "Everyone on the street!" and organize their event at ready-made sites with all the necessary infrastructure. This season, the service has already received more than 3.2 thousand applications, and entrepreneurs, creative teams and non-profit organizations have managed to hold over 900 events. Among them are master classes, training sessions, concerts and show programs.

This multi-level system of involvement provides the city with a rich event program, and entrepreneurs with new channels of promotion and opportunities for business development.

Joint creative experience and discounts

In 2022, Maxim and Elena Sidorov decided to create not just a project, but a real cultural oasis — the creative space "House of Culture". Their idea is that culture should not be in museums under glass, but here and now — in everyday life, communication and emotions. Today, the creative space "House of Culture" is a place where movies are not just watched, but lived, board games and quizzes turn into real intellectual battles, and random visitors become friends.

This summer, the Sidorovs joined the special project “Time of Opportunities” and began offering tickets to the July and August events with 50 percent discountto make quality leisure accessible.

"We advocate that young people not only spend time on social networks, but also gain new knowledge, meet new people, and enjoy live communication with their peers. With the help of the special project, we contribute to the popularization of interesting and diverse leisure activities," noted Elena Sidorova.

City in the language of flowers

Another participant in the special project is Angelina Derzhavina. For the owner of the Angie's Flo workshop, flower bouquets are a language that can be used to speak without words. Her love for floristry began as a hobby, and in 2019 it grew into a life's work – her own store. Now Angelina has decided to share her knowledge and inspiration with city residents and on August 25, as part of the special project "Time of Opportunities", she will hold a free master class on creating a summer flower arrangement. Participants will not only learn how to create elegant arrangements, but also learn the secret language of flowers, and how to combine shades to convey emotions, and much more.

"For me, this is a chance to show that floristry is not just a craft, but an art filled with meaning. When a client smiles when receiving our bouquet, or a guest assembles their own composition for the first time, this is the best reward. We want everyone to take with them not just flowers, but a new skill and inspiration," explained Angelina Derzhavina.

Making life interesting in different areas

ADG group, one of the leading developers in Russia, has been developing a network of district centers "Mesto Vstrechi" for several years – modern public spaces in densely populated areas of the capital, which have become an important part of the "Summer in Moscow" project. These multifunctional complexes combine coworking spaces, lecture halls, children's spaces, recreation areas, areas for leisure activities and sports, creating a comfortable environment for residents.

A special event of the new season of "Summer in Moscow" was the open film screenings on the roof of the Angara center, organized jointly with the Premier online cinema. Throughout the summer, twice a week, the roof of the Angara turns into a cozy open-air cinema, where city residents can not only watch their favorite TV series, but also chat with their creators.

The company's press service noted that one of the goals of their project is to create friendly and close-knit communities of like-minded people around district centers, as well as to offer opportunities for a healthy vacation for the whole family. The partnership with "Summer in Moscow" helped to significantly expand the number of diverse and high-quality events for guests, increase their involvement and loyalty.

Businesses and non-profit organizations of the capital are invited to join the main event of the season — the project "Summer in Moscow". Those wishing to make a bright statement about their brand and take advantage of the capital's support for the development of their business can organize an event at one of the city sites or get a point of sale there, hold an event in their organization under the brand "Summer in Moscow", integrate their brand into the design of a city festival or other event, take part in a competition for the seasonal design of facades and shop windows.

Commercial partners who want to participate in the project but do not have ready-made solutions can receive expert advice.

Project "Summer in Moscow"— the main event of the season. It brings together the most vibrant events of the capital. Every day, charity, cultural and sports events are held in all districts of the city, most of which are free. The Summer in Moscow project is being held for the second time, and this season will be more eventful: new, original and colorful events will be added to traditional festivals and events.

Another stream of the program of the Moscow Government's HR Services Department "Urban Leader. Start" has been completed. It is part of the line of flagship educational programs for managers and helps to form an effective management culture in city organizations.

The management tools, practical problem-solving skills and new professional contacts that managers receive within the program help them more effectively organize the work of their teams to implement significant projects in the capital.

The graduates included 715 line managers from Moscow Government structures. Over the course of three months, they completed online intensive courses with experts in the development of management competencies, analyzed their own experience, and mastered new approaches and tools that could be applied in their work.

"The program brings together motivated managers from different organizations of the Moscow Government. Today, it is part of a large-scale line of programs "Urban Leader", which covers line and middle managers. This approach allows us to introduce a modern management culture at different levels and form a single information field. Graduates of the programs continue to communicate and develop in the professional community, and thanks to this format, the teams become even stronger and more effective for the city," shared Ksenia Aleksandrova, Director of Development and Client Work of the HR Services Department of the Moscow Government.

Participants in the program studied new management tools together with experts and practiced them in practice. They trained to apply skills in conditions close to real ones and analyzed examples from the experience of middle managers.

Line managers learned how to make decisions from setting tasks based on employees’ strengths to conducting effective meetings with colleagues with different interests. Through group interactions, participants built business connections and expanded their professional circle of contacts. All this affects the coordinated work of city teams that make the capital more convenient for millions of residents.

Oksana Shagova, Deputy Head of the Events Organization Department of ANO Mosstrategiya, noted that she decided to undergo training after feedback from her colleagues and as a result received the opportunity to rethink her approach to management.

"Urban Leader": How Moscow Prepares New Generation Managers

Yuri Butov, Deputy Head of the Moscow Civil Registry Office, congratulated them on the successful completion of the program. Then the graduates took part in an intellectual quiz, where they recalled the program they had studied and demonstrated their knowledge of the capital. At the end, they received certificates and parting words from the head and presenters of the program.

"The participants were extremely active — they attended additional intensive courses and practices, got to know each other and shared experiences. Everyone comes to the training with their own goal: some want to get practical tools, others want to feel the support of their colleagues, and others want to establish new professional connections in order to work even more effectively for the benefit of the city. The Urban Leader. Start program is more than just training. It is a space for development, where everyone can get what they came for," said Svetlana Koycheva, head of the Urban Leader. Start program.

All participants in the program are included in the informal closed association "Urban Leader. Community", which includes mid-level managers of the Moscow Government – graduates of the "Urban Leader" program.

Participants study best management practices at thematic meetings, go on excursions to leading organizations in the capital and strengthen team spirit in sporting events.

Bloggers from different cities visited NSU under the Student Tourism program

Translation. Region: Russian Federal

Source: Novosibirsk State University –

An important disclaimer is at the bottom of this article.

Since 2021, the Student Tourism project has been uniting students and young people, giving them the opportunity to travel and get to know the country's leading universities. Every year, participants travel to various regions of the country – from Kaliningrad to Vladivostok. Universities across Russia open the doors of their campuses to travelers, offering unique tourist programs developed on the student-to-student principle. They include popular science routes, master classes, events and much more. This contributes not only to broadening the horizons of program participants, but also to the development of scientific, historical and sports tourism.

The main point of the route was Novosibirsk State University. The blog tour participants were accommodated in the new dormitory #4/2. Over the course of two days, the children were introduced to the campus, given excursions to the NSU history museums, the Evolution of the Earth and New Archeology RECs. The children were especially interested in the excursion to the accelerator mass spectrometry laboratory, where they were explained how scientific research works are carried out. In the Startup Studio and the Demonstration Center of the Center for Information Technologies, the bloggers were shown smart developments created by university students. The Ministry of Culture of the Novosibirsk Region and the Novosibirsk Museum of Local History gave the blog tour participants a walking tour of the Akademgorodok, and the children were also shown the science town from the NSU dome, where at a height of 63 meters from the observation deck a breathtaking view of the Ob Sea, the campus and endless forests opened up. The journey ended with a PISHNIK from the Advanced Engineering School of NSU, where bloggers and students competed in volleyball and engineering games on the sand.

Kirill Zhigulin, the author of a blog dedicated to Russia and patriotism, noted the uniqueness of Novosibirsk and its potential.

— I was particularly struck by the fact that it is the youth who are building the future of Novosibirsk through science and sports. NSU demonstrates high indicators in education and scientific activity. I am sure that Novosibirsk is a unique brand of the region with huge potential, and the future here is built by young people and NSU graduates. I think more and more young people will come here not only for scientific, but also historical, sports and aviation tourism. This is a really cool and unique idea, — Kirill shared.

Karina Zakharova from Kazan, media ambassador of “Student Tourism”, spoke about her experience.

— This is my first blog tour as part of Student Tourism, although I have been actively traveling for about four years and have two blogs. Previously, I had only been to Novosibirsk in transit, and now I had the opportunity to get to know the city and the university. I was impressed by the VivaAvia festival and the NSU museums, which are truly worth attention. NSU is a university with a developed student culture, startups and great potential. Despite my attachment to my hometown, if the opportunity presented itself, I would gladly study at NSU. I want to wish everyone to travel and discover Russia through Student Tourism — it is a great budget option, — said Karina.

Georgy Favorsky, media ambassador of "Student Tourism", blogger, student of the I. Ya. Yakovlev Chelyabinsk State Pedagogical University, emphasized that he values his university very much, but NSU also impressed him very much.

— All the events were very rich and interesting. I especially liked the excursion to the museum, where they study earth rocks and you could touch all the exhibits. The atmosphere was very friendly, you could feel the real care and support from the participants and organizers of the program. Novosibirsk, as the third most populous city in Russia, really has great potential. The university has a high level of education, comparable to the leading metropolitan universities. Now I am sure that Novosibirsk is the center of Siberian civilization, and I recommend everyone who is considering moving or studying in another city to pay attention to this wonderful city and university, — added Gosha.

The Student Tourism program continues to unite young people from different regions of Russia, allowing them to expand their horizons and participate in the intellectual and cultural life of the country's leading universities. NSU, with its unique combination of science, sports and innovation, confidently occupies one of the leading positions in this youth movement, inviting students from all corners of the country to become part of the large Siberian educational family.

Scientists from the Civil Engineering Institute are conducting a study aimed at studying the characteristics of water from the Neva River that are important for online monitoring of its quality. Work on the project is being conducted under the supervision of Maria Andrianova, Associate Professor of the Higher School of Hydraulic Engineering and Power Engineering of the Civil Engineering Institute. The research group also includes Ekaterina Chabina, Senior Lecturer at the ISI HSGEES, and Benjami Ishtvakh, Postgraduate Student.

The aim of the study is to analyze the variability of the optical density of water in drinking water sources, which is key to improving automatic monitoring systems (CAM) of pollutants. Modern online monitoring technologies can significantly speed up the process of water quality analysis, although their accuracy may be lower than laboratory methods. However, prompt data acquisition is critical for the effective management of water purification processes. In 2021, a GOST was adopted regulating the use of CAM, which emphasizes the need to take into account seasonal and weather phenomena when monitoring water bodies.

According to project manager Maria Andrianova, preliminary data demonstrate significant seasonal variability of optical coefficients in the ultraviolet range, exceeding the possible measurement error. This confirms the relevance of the study aimed at assessing the scale of this variability and determining the factors influencing its dynamics. Given the changes in climatic conditions and the transformation of the city's sewage system over the past decades, the project is of particular importance for modern ecology and water treatment.

The Higher School of Hydraulic and Power Engineering of the Civil Engineering Institute has a modern instrumental base for analyzing the main characteristics of water, including determining total organic carbon, individual ions, optical density spectra and fluorescence in the ultraviolet and visible ranges. Scientists plan to conduct a detailed analysis of water samples taken from the Neva and its tributaries under various weather conditions: in summer and winter, during the spring flood and autumn showers. The main objective of the study is to create a database of spectral and chemical indicators of water for the subsequent identification of patterns.

To ensure the successful implementation of the project, the participation of master's students is required. In this regard, we invite students of the Civil Engineering Institute to take an active part in the work on the project, as well as to complete final qualifying works on the research topic, – shared senior lecturer of the Higher School of Civil Engineering and Economics Ekaterina Chabina.

We hope that the research results will find application at the enterprises of the Vodokanal of St. Petersburg, noted the project manager Maria Andrianova.
