Day of Military Glory: The End of the Battle of Leningrad – a Triumph of Fortitude

Today, August 9, we are celebrating the Day of the End of the Battle of Leningrad for the first time at the federal level, paying tribute to the memory of all who survived this unprecedented test and, at the cost of incredible sacrifices, brought victory over fascism closer.

Assignment of the status of Day of Military Glory

Previously, celebrations were held only at the local and regional level, but the historical significance of this event, the scale of the tragedy and the greatness of the Leningraders' feat required recognition at the highest state level. And so, on April 1, 2025, the President signed a Federal Law establishing August 9 as the Day of Military Glory of Russia.

The Battle of Leningrad lasted 1,127 days and became the longest in the Great Patriotic War.

This is not just a battle, it is an entire era in the history of the Great Patriotic War, an era of courage, endurance and inhuman fortitude.

The beginning of the Battle of Leningrad and the blockade of the city

The battle for Leningrad began on July 10, 1941, with the start of the fighting on the Luga line. And from the beginning of the blockade on September 8, 1941, the city turned into a huge island of resistance, dying of hunger and cold. Incessant bombing, artillery shelling, the constant threat of capture – this was the reality of life for millions of people who found themselves surrounded by the enemy.

But Leningrad survived. It survived thanks to the unparalleled heroism of the Red Army soldiers, workers, engineers, doctors, teachers, and ordinary residents, all those who were a single whole during this terrible time. Children, women, old people – everyone took part in the common cause of saving the city. They worked at defense plants, dug trenches, got water and fuel, carried ammunition, participated in extinguishing fires. They fought for their home, for their land, for their Motherland.

The memory of that time is preserved in bloody numbers: millions of people died from hunger, cold and enemy shells.

Lifting the siege of Leningrad

The siege of Leningrad was broken on January 18, 1943, during Operation Iskra. A window was formed in the siege ring, which allowed land communications with the besieged city to be restored.

Leningrad was finally liberated from the blockade on January 27, 1944, but military actions around the city and in the northern direction continued for another six months. As a result, the threat on the distant northern borders was eliminated and the present-day Leningrad, Pskov, Novgorod regions and Karelia were liberated.

The official end of the Battle of Leningrad

On August 9, 1944, the commander of the Karelian Front, Kirill Meretskov, signed an order to end the offensive in the Vyborg-Petrozavodsk operation, which became the final victorious chord of the Battle of Leningrad.

The feat of the soldiers was recognized at the highest level: the Victory Parade in Moscow on June 24, 1945 was opened by a combined regiment of the Karelian Front, and the hero of the Battle of Leningrad, Marshal of the Soviet Union Kirill Meretskov, marched in front.

We remember. We honor. We are proud.

Today we must remember not only the heroism of the soldiers and city residents, but also the countless losses, suffering and deprivation that befell the Leningraders. This memory is our national shrine, our joint responsibility to future generations.

The end of the Battle of Leningrad is not just a date on the calendar. It is a symbol of hope and the unbroken spirit of the Soviet people. This is the day when we honor the memory of the heroes who gave their lives for the freedom of our country, and we especially keenly understand the price of peace and the importance of preserving historical memory.

Let us celebrate this Day of Military Glory with respect and gratitude, honoring the memory of those who saved Leningrad and brought the great Victory closer.

We remember. We honor. We are proud.

On August 6, the final of the international competition SynBio Challenge was held in Shenzhen (Guangdong Province, China). The team Faculty of Natural Sciences (FNS) of NSU GeneMeow won a gold medal in the Synthetic Cell category. The team solved the problem of developing a DNA sequence no longer than 140 bp, which ensures high expression of the green fluorescent protein. Two more teams from Russia, representing Moscow State University and Pirogov University, became winners in the Protein Design track.

The GeneMeow team included six students of the NSU Natural Sciences Department who completed their 3rd year in the Biology program: Valeria Romanova, Ekaterina Bolotova, Nail Bikeev, Nikita Ivanov, Ulyana Borovikova and Dmitry Kurbatsky. GeneMeow was formed from two strong teams that had previously participated in the Biotournament and achieved high results.

Nail Bikeev, a member of the NSU GeneMeow team, spoke about preparation and participation in the competition:

— We learned about the competition in May and spent a long time choosing the track we wanted to participate in. The Synthetic cell track seemed to us to be a more interesting and challenging task. We needed to create a DNA sequence that could increase the yield of the target protein, in our case, Green Fluorescent Protein (GFP), which glows a beautiful green color. In a short time, we had to develop a concept for the sequence, review many articles on the topic, highlight the necessary ones, and check the functionality of the design using bioinformatics methods. The trip to China and the presentation of the work at the international level was the best motivation, since we managed to assemble our sequence and send it! At the Olympiad, we met many guys from other countries: Japan, Thailand, and, of course, China, and also met colleagues from Moscow State University and the Pirogov Russian National Research Medical University. Such events are very inspiring, showing how many like-minded people there are all over the world.

The final was held in the format of a festival, where each team presented their solutions to the problems at the selection stage. In addition, the organizers of the competition synthesized the DNA sequences proposed by the participants, inserted them into plasmids with a gene of a fluorescent protein, which is used to check the DNA sequence, and during the festival visualized the synthesized sequences, compared which team's glowed brighter. The brightness of the glow became one of the criteria for assessing the work of each team.

Sergey Sedykh, PhD, Senior Lecturer Institute of Medicine and Medical Technologies NSU, a judge for the SynBio Challenge, commented:

— It was the first time I was a judge at such an international event. The Russian teams showed themselves very well. Our guys from NSU demonstrated that the field of synthetic biology and life sciences in general is actively developing at Novosibirsk University, both at the Faculty of Natural Sciences and at the Institute of Medicine and Medical Technologies, where a new Master's program "Industrial Pharmacy". I have no doubt that next year the team from Novosibirsk will include students of this new program. Our guys have confirmed by their own example that the NSU motto "We will not make you smarter, we will teach you to think" works at the international level as well.

The competition is organized by Shenzhen University of High Technology. A total of 1,800 students registered to participate in the competition this year, of which about 1,000 participants from six countries — China, Russia, Japan, Singapore, Thailand and Malaysia — reached the finals.

The participation of the NSU team in the international competition was financed within the framework of the academic mobility project of the Institute of Medicine and Medical Technologies of NSU Priority 2030 programs.

Marat Khusnullin opened a new interchange on the M-11 Neva highway

Deputy Prime Minister Marat Khusnullin launched traffic at the interchange on the federal highway M-11 "Neva" in the Tver Region. The new facility was built by the state company "Avtodor". The opening of the interchange was attended by Minister of Transport Andrei Nikitin, Chairman of the Board of the state company "Avtodor" Vyacheslav Petushenko, Governor of the Tver Region Igor Rudenya, and Acting Governor of the Novgorod Region Alexander Dronov.

“The M-11 highway is a key element of the international transport corridors “North-South”, “West-East”, and Europe-Western China, which originate in St. Petersburg. The new interchange will provide convenient access to the highway for residents and visitors of two cities – Valdai and Borovichi, as well as dozens of rural settlements. In addition, this is an additional connection with the promising tourist routes of Valdai. I would like to note that, in general, this is part of a large-scale work on the formation of international transport corridors and a backbone road network covering 2,160 settlements. I am confident that the heads of the Tver and Novgorod regions will be able to correctly use the impetus provided by the new road facilities for the development of their territories. This is an opportunity to place new tourist facilities, logistics and production complexes, and housing construction. I thank the road workers, foremen, and engineers! The facility was built in a short time – less than a year. Thanks to the Ministry of Transport of Russia, the team of the state-owned company “Avtodor”. Thank you Rosavtodor is for prompt repair of the road towards Valdai. We have many tasks ahead, a lot of work. We will only move forward to new victories!" – said Marat Khusnullin.

The site created conditions for safe and comfortable travel. To separate oncoming traffic flows, a dividing strip was installed, and 143 outdoor lighting supports were installed. At the peak of construction, more than 250 people and 80 units of equipment were involved in the site.

Transport Minister Andrey Nikitin noted that this is a historic, landmark project for two entities – Novgorod and Tver Oblasts. “In addition to Valdai, a rapidly growing tourist center of the region, Borovichi, an advanced development area where industry is growing, this is an opportunity for the southern and southeastern territories of Novgorod Oblast to move forward. Thanks to this interchange and the work that the region is doing together with Avtodor State Corporation, settlements have the opportunity to attract investment and economic development in order to create a quality life for residents,” said Andrey Nikitin.

"Traditionally, on the eve of our professional holiday, we put new facilities into operation. Today we are opening traffic on a transport interchange that has a special, historical significance. This is due to the fact that this is the first interchange that we have built since the opening of the Tver bypass on the M-11 "Neva" last year. I want to say that we are actively developing this highway. Now, on the instructions of the President, we are building another interchange on this road, which will provide a convenient exit to Pulkovo Airport in St. Petersburg. These facilities open up new opportunities for the development of the economy of adjacent territories, help to increase the indicators of the regions, provide access to our high-speed highways. We have many plans, and we are focused on further productive work to improve the infrastructure of our road network. Builders are great! I want to congratulate everyone on the upcoming holiday – Builder's Day, with the most creative, effective and best profession in the world! " – emphasized the head of the state company "Avtodor" Vyacheslav Petushenko.

Governor of the Tver Region Igor Rudenya noted that the opening of a new transport interchange in the Bologovsky District, at the 385th kilometer of the M-11 highway, is a significant event that will improve the transport accessibility of the northern and north-eastern territories of the Tver Region, and will increase the connectivity of the Upper Volga region with the Novgorod and Vologda Regions. "On behalf of the residents of the Tver Region, I would like to thank the Government of the Russian Federation, the state company Avtodor, the designers, builders, and everyone who implemented the project at a high quality level, significantly ahead of schedule," said Igor Rudenya.

As the acting governor of the Novgorod region Alexander Dronov noted, the interchange is of great importance for the further development of the Novgorod region. "For guests of the region, this is a unique opportunity to comfortably reach our pearls, Borovichi, Valdai, the great Valdai trail, Lake Seliger, which also unites us with our good neighbors," he said.

Russian school team wins 8 medals at International Olympiad on Artificial Intelligence in China

"Our President Vladimir Putin has set a task – Russia must become a world leader not only in the creation, but also in the scale of application, the penetration of artificial intelligence into all spheres of life without exception. Our country has a strong physics and mathematics school and advanced developments in the field of AI. Russian schoolchildren, who received 8 medals in a fair competition, are worthy successors of these traditions. Guys, congratulations on your well-deserved awards! I thank the teachers, mentors from universities and business. You have proven that joining efforts is a direct path to victory," congratulated Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Chernyshenko.

The Deputy Prime Minister added that this significantly increases the number of awards won by Russian schoolchildren at international competitions this year: 29 medals had already been won.

The team was prepared by representatives of the Central University and the Alliance in the field of artificial intelligence (AI) together with the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology (MIPT).

In 2025, the International Olympiad on Artificial Intelligence was held with the support of UNESCO.

In the final, the Russian team met with 300 talented schoolchildren from 61 countries, including Australia, Brazil, Hungary, China, Mexico, UAE, Poland, Serbia, Singapore, USA, Sweden, and Japan.

"I congratulate our schoolchildren, who have once again proven their skills at the international level. The guys showed an excellent result at the International Olympiad on Artificial Intelligence. Their success is not only a source of pride for the country, but also an important contribution of education to the future development of the economy and the digital maturity of the state. Artificial intelligence is one of the most promising areas of modern science, and your achievements strengthen Russia's technological leadership. I am sure that such talented guys will move science and innovation forward. I thank the participants for their perseverance, hard work and will to win, and their mentors for their professionalism and support," said Minister of Education Sergey Kravtsov.

The International AI Olympiad finals took place over two days and consisted of team and individual rounds. In the team round, the Russian team entered the top 10 teams on the first day of participation and won the silver medal.

Participants programmed robots, solved non-standard tasks in teams and individually, applying knowledge from various fields – from computer vision and machine learning to natural language processing.

"We are incredibly proud of our school team! All the guys won medals! And 6 gold medals at the International AI Olympiad is a triumph of Russian talent and perseverance. The guys demonstrated not only brilliant knowledge in artificial intelligence, computer vision and machine learning, but also the ability to work in a team. This victory is a clear indication of the enormous scientific and technical potential of young people from all over Russia.

We, the AI Alliance, Central University, MIPT and our partners, have joined forces to give kids the best possible training. We see how investments in supporting gifted students in the critical area of AI are yielding outstanding results at the world level.

Congratulations to the winners, their mentors and the entire support team! We invite all team members to join us for an internship and wish them success!" said Alexander Vedyakhin, Chairman of the Supervisory Board of the AI Alliance and First Deputy Chairman of the Management Board of Sberbank.

The team for participation in IOAI was determined as part of the in-person preparation of Northern Eurasia OAI 2025 in May at the SberUniversity site. Leading experts in the field of AI in Russia, including members of the scientific council of the Alliance in the field of AI, gave lectures to the participants. The event included in-person training camps and final tests for candidates to join the team.

The team's preparation took place in several stages. The training program was developed by leading experts from the Central University. The participants were trained by experts and teachers from the Central University, including Alexander Gushchin, Tatyana Gaintseva, Alexander Dyakonov. Also this year, specialists in the field of artificial intelligence from Russian and international companies and universities, including Sber, T-Bank, Huawei, Wildberries, Yandex, VK, MTS, HSE and MIPT, joined the training.

"I would like to congratulate the winners of the International Olympiad on Artificial Intelligence with their well-deserved medals and thank them for their efforts and work during the competition and long preparation. This is the second time we are preparing the Russian team and the second time successfully. Last year, at the first International Olympiad on AI in Bulgaria, the guys, with the support of the Central University, won by a large margin over the strongest competitors from 39 countries. This year, the Olympiad itself has become more mature – the number of participating countries has increased from 39 to 61. And we have approached the preparation even more consciously – a team of leading experts from the Central University has developed an individual training program, and also strengthened its expertise with the resources of our partners – the Alliance in the field of artificial intelligence and MIPT.

We clearly understand the role that new technologies and specialists in this field play in building national technological sovereignty and are glad that we can make our contribution at the level of higher and optional education to the development of human resources and the well-being of our country,” said the rector of the Central University, Evgeny Ivashkevich.
