Anna Kurbatova, Associate Professor of the Department of Environmental Safety and Product Quality Management at the RUDN University Institute of Ecology, presented her paper at the 5th International Conference on Water, Energy, Environment, and Sustainable Development in Islamabad. For the first time in Pakistan, at NUST University, a Russian professor served as the keynote speaker.

The study's methodology is based on a numerical assessment of decoupling over a specified period of time using the ratio proposed by UNEP. We propose the decoupling index as a research method as a tool for assessing the environmental and economic sustainability of MSW management systems not only in Moscow but also in other cities, for the development of future sustainable MSW management policy scenarios in the near future. The report generated keen interest among NUST researchers and helped me in discussions regarding joint work with them.

Anna Kurbatova

At the conference, the RUDN University associate professor also took part in the work of the commission to evaluate the best reports by master's and postgraduate students from Pakistani universities.

The students presented excellent, high-level scientific reports on assessing air pollution levels (particulate matter), increasing soil sequestration activity through fertilizer application, and other topics. I can't help but note that NUST prioritizes the creation of scientific schools in various research areas and achieves high scientific results, building the country's scientific potential.

Anna Kurbatova

Water scarcity and waste management system

In addition, during her working trip, Anna Igorevna gave lectures at the National University of Science and Technology (NUST) on the topic of "The Interrelationship of Water, Energy, and Food."

The issue is relevant for Pakistan due to its dependence on rural areas, where most of the water used for irrigating farmland comes from rivers originating in India. If India were to suddenly cut off the river, Pakistan would face a water shortage. Furthermore, melting glaciers and unstable monsoons due to climate change pose an additional threat to the water supply. Reduced water availability could impact hydroelectric power generation, which is also critical for the country.

Anna Kurbatova

As the associate professor noted, her lectures generated lively interest and active discussions, particularly around the challenges associated with managing water, energy, and food resources. Faculty and students appreciated the importance of the WEF Nexus approach, which demonstrates the interconnectedness of these resources and the need for comprehensive solutions. They also expressed interest in Russia's transboundary challenges in the context of water diplomacy and ways to address them.

Following her visit to the university, Anna Igorevna agreed on scientific collaboration with her Pakistani colleagues from NUST.

We have already begun work on an article on the application of artificial intelligence to solving waste management problems in urban areas. Islamabad and Moscow, and the municipal solid waste management system, will be the study subjects. We will also be joined by Professor H. Abu-Qdeis from JUST University in Jordan, with whom I have co-authored a series of Q1 and Q2 articles over the past eight years, created several MOOCs (open online courses in English), a VR simulator on the energy recovery of municipal solid waste, and prepared a joint monograph on bioeconomic research.

Anna Kurbatova

Anna Igorevna also noted that a cooperation agreement between NUST and RUDN is currently being worked out.

NUST scientists are world-class, with high h-indices and cutting-edge research in water resource management, artificial intelligence, earthquake monitoring, and nanotechnology. Collaboration with the university will open new opportunities for our students and staff.

A three-day advanced training program, "Environmental Protection Regulation. Circular Economy," has concluded at the St. Petersburg Polytechnic University's Institute of Civil Engineering. The program was developed by the Center for Continuing Professional Programs at the St. Petersburg Polytechnic University Institute of Civil Engineering and the Efir Academy, part of the Rusnano Group.

Representatives from Rosprirodnadzor departments, leading testing centers in ecology and environmental protection, and faculty and students from the St. Petersburg Polytechnic University's Civil Engineering Institute participated in the intensive educational program. The Rusnano Group presented the Efir JSC technology bank.

At the opening of the program, Dmitry Tikhonov, Vice-Rector for Continuing and Pre-University Education at SPbPU, and Ivan Ozhgikhin, General Director of the Efir Academy, addressed the participants with welcoming remarks. Participants were also greeted by Svetlana Filatova, Director of the Efir Center (STC Pravo), Vladimir Chernyshev, Deputy Head of the Federal Service for Supervision of Natural Resource Usage, and Mikhail Kozminykh, Head of the Northwestern Interregional Department of Rosprirodnadzor.

The course program covered key areas of modern environmental regulation: new legislative initiatives in environmental protection, carbon regulation and industrial environmental control, environmental management, and air and land risk assessment. The course included practical sessions during which participants developed a gas purification unit data sheet, examined an example of using life cycle assessment to optimize a product's carbon footprint, analyzed common errors in developing an environmental impact assessment program and report, and learned about the operation of polymer waste recycling units (using JSC Efir as an example).

Lectures and practical classes were given by representatives of the central office of Rosprirodnadzor, leading experts from federal executive bodies, expert practitioners from the Efir Center and the Efir Academy, as well as Professor Natalia Politaeva and Associate Professor Alexander Chusov from the Civil Engineering Institute.

On the third day of the training, Alexander Chusov and Natalia Politaeva spoke to the audience about assessment methodology, the significance and impact of environmental risks, air and water purification technologies, the economic justification for investments in eco-technologies, and the company's environmental policy. Particular attention was paid to a practical session dedicated to analyzing a case study of using life cycle assessment to optimize a product's carbon footprint. At the Civil Engineering Institute, the participants visited the industrial ecology laboratory, the water purification laboratory, and the environmental monitoring laboratory, where Natalia Politaeva, Alexander Chusov, as well as Maria Andrianova, Associate Professor of the Higher School of Hydraulic and Power Engineering, and Viktor Chechevichkin, Lead Engineer, presented the guests with modern equipment and methods for analyzing water environmental parameters.

The final stage of the program was the final testing, based on the results of which participants received certificates of advanced training.

"Today, effective environmental management is becoming key to the development of both individual companies and the country as a whole. Modern environmental management is not simply compliance with standards and regulations, but a systematic approach to environmental conservation, the rational use of resources, and the implementation of innovation," says Ivan Ozhgikhin, Head of Environmental Management at Rusnano Group.

"Peter the Great St. Petersburg Polytechnic University implements a comprehensive approach to ecology and environmental protection: in addition to specialized training for specialists, we include environmental competence as a mandatory element in our educational programs for all students. For example, the Civil Engineering Institute is already implementing a program of specialized Rosprirodnadzor classes at St. Petersburg schools, and there are also student environmental associations. An important focus of our continuing professional education programs has become the involvement of industrial partners—this allows us to provide students with relevant knowledge and practical experience from leading industry experts," noted Dmitry Tikhonov, Vice-Rector for Continuing and Pre-University Education at SPbPU.

The Novosibirsk Association of Foreign Students celebrated the traditional Indian holiday of Diwali.

Translation. Region: Russian Federation –

An important disclaimer is at the bottom of this article.

Diwali is the main Indian and Hindu holiday, celebrated as the "Festival of Lights" and symbolizing the victory of good over evil. Beyond India itself, Diwali is widely celebrated in countries with large Hindu communities, including Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Kenya, Nepal, Malaysia, South Africa, and many other countries. The Novosibirsk Association of International Students organized the event for the first time. The traditional celebration took place at the House of Scientists.

"The idea of our celebration truly brought together people from different educational institutions. Since the Association of International Students represents all of Novosibirsk's universities, students from NSU, NSTU, NSPU, NGK, NSAU, SibUPC, RANEPA, NSUEM, and other universities actively participated in the preparation and celebration of Diwali. What's especially gratifying is that our event attracted attention beyond the city limits. We were delighted to welcome a student delegation from Altai State Medical University, who made a special trip to share in the joy of the celebration," commented Avishka Alagiyavanna, President of the Association of International Students of Novosibirsk and a student at the NSU Faculty of Geology and Geophysics.

At the celebration, students and guests enjoyed traditional Indian treats such as gulab jamun and masala chai, participated in mehndi workshops, and a quiz on Bollywood and Indian songs. On stage, Jahedul Islam from Bangladesh and Olesya Lanser from Russia recited a touching poem in Bengali and its Russian translation. Anna Tsyba, a master's student at NSPU, performed classical kathak dance, accompanied by Yegor Shikhov, playing the tabla drum.

"We were absolutely thrilled! We were truly touched by how many people responded and came to the celebration. Seeing happy faces, feeling the energy of unity and mutual interest—it was priceless. Guests enthusiastically participated in the master classes, sampled Indian delicacies, and danced to traditional music. This lively, warm atmosphere exceeded all our expectations. Most importantly, the organizers and performers weren't just students from India. We had students from Sri Lanka, Algeria, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Kyrgyzstan, Laos, Syria, Mali, Russia, Azerbaijan, and so on," shared Avishka.

Amira Nada, Vice President of the AIS and a student at the Faculty of Natural Sciences at NSU, is well acquainted with Indian culture, and planning the program and workshops was no problem for her.

"Avishka and I were the key organizers who brought this idea to life. With the help of other team members, we managed to pull off a truly amazing event, and everyone contributed to its success. I was the head of media, and my role was to promote the event, create posts and posters. We also recruited participants to make the event as diverse as possible. And finally, I performed with Avishka and our girls to Indian songs—it was amazing! The event was the culmination of three months of hard work. Organizing an event of this scale is no easy task, but when you have a team willing to achieve the impossible, everything becomes easier. People really enjoyed the event, and we received a lot of positive feedback—that means a lot to us. We're happy we were able to create such a memorable event, and it inspires us to work even harder and hold even larger events in the future," said Amira.

Nadir Mammadzade from RANEPA served as the event's host, assisting with the preparation of scripts, coordinating rehearsals with participants and communications with volunteers, participating in program planning meetings, and assisting with selecting texts for the presenters and distributing lines. Like other AIS participants, this was his first experience organizing Diwali.

"The atmosphere was warm, sincere, and very energetic. It was amazing to see how people from different countries came together and poured their hearts into each number. Technically, everything went smoothly: the lighting and sound were seamless, and the audience warmly welcomed each performance. I think in the future, we could allocate a little more time to stage rehearsals for larger groups. We could also enhance the visual component, for example, with more background video clips or decor to make some of the numbers even more impressive. Otherwise, everything went great!" Nadir said.

For Huefae Lorvanxai from NSAU, this was her first event as an AIS member. She helped organize the dance performance.

"The event was a great success! Participants were engaged and showed great interest in Diwali traditions. The atmosphere was festive and friendly. I especially remember the warm and joyful atmosphere that permeated the celebration," said Huefae.

For Lihiniya Kumarage Avishka Vishwajit from NSTU, this was also his first experience working at AIS. The student was responsible for purchasing decorations and food, coordinating guest participants, and was also a photographer during the event itself.

"The event was great. The students had a great time networking and getting to know each other, and students from Asian countries shared their unique experiences! We're glad the students made so many new connections. The event featured a wide range of interactive activities," said Lihinia Kumarage Avishka Vishwajit.

The AIS's mission is to create a friendly and warm international environment that will become a home for international students in Novosibirsk, where they can not only study but also experience their culture and share it with others. This isn't the last national holiday the Association will organize. The organizers also plan to hold traditional Russian holidays to introduce students to Russian customs and culture.

Light of the Future Economy: The 2nd D.S. Lvov National Economic Forum Opens at the State University of Management

Translation. Region: Russian Federation –

An important disclaimer is at the bottom of this article.

On October 29, 2025, the Lviv Forum, organized by the Institute of Economics and Finance of the State University of Management, opened at the State University of Management. The forum was dedicated to the scientific legacy of the legendary Russian economist, Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences Dmitry Semenovich Lvov, a graduate of the Sergo Ordzhonikidze Moscow Engineering and Economics Institute (now the State University of Management).

The plenary session of the Lviv Forum was opened by the event's moderator, Galina Sorokina, Director of the Institute of Economics and Finance at the State University of Management, and Doctor of Economics. Sorokina noted the growing interest in studying economic theory and the works of Academician Lvov. The Atrium of our business center, where the forum was held, was truly packed.

Welcoming the participants, SUMU Vice-Rector, Doctor of Technical and Pedagogical Sciences, Professor Maria Karelina drew attention to the extensive work of our university's economic theorists and encouraged students to engage in economics on a regular basis.

Maria Yuryevna thanked for the support the student Dmitry Semenovich Lvov, the director of the Central Economics and Mathematics Institute (CEMI RAS), corresponding member of the RAS Albert Bakhtizin and corresponding member of the RAS, head of the department of “Institutional Economics” of the State University Georgy Kleiner, who conducts a lot of scientific work and passes on his knowledge to young specialists. “We must be leaders in economic science – and we have everything for this,” concluded Maria Yuryevna and, wishing the participants fruitful work, gave the floor to Albert Bakhtizin, who presented the audience with the fundamental theses of the socio-economic doctrine formed by Academician Dmitry Lvov. Back in the early 2000s, the academician drew attention to alarming demographic symptoms, speaking about the problem of excess mortality in our country’s population: “Within the framework of the social doctrine, Dmitry Semyonovich outlined the social face of Russian excess mortality – young, male, Russian,” quoted academician Bakhtizin. — As for the forecast of the number of Russians, taking into account different birth rates and migration scenarios, our calculations showed: the current trend will lead to an increase in the number of migrants of the first and subsequent waves by the end of the century to 40% of the total population, which will continue to decline. In any case, the efforts of government authorities should be aimed not only at solving problems associated with increasing the birth rate and reducing mortality, but largely at preserving the health of indigenous people and their level of development.”

Georgy Kleiner spoke about the invaluable importance of Academician Lvov's fundamental works on production efficiency, the management of scientific and technological progress, and the equitable distribution of income in the development of a unified economic theory. In conclusion, Georgy Borisovich noted that Dmitry Semenovich Lvov's legacy continues to have a profound influence on the development of Russian economic thought and proposed that the SUM leadership initiate the publication of his collected works.

Sergey Glazyev, Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences and Head of the Department of Economic Policy and Economic Measurements at the State University of Management, noted that "Dmitry Semenovich Lvov's works remain relevant. I wouldn't say he was ahead of his time. On the contrary, if these recommendations, related to the development of scientific and technological progress and the stabilization of our economy, had been implemented 20-30 years ago, even in the medium term, they would have created new opportunities for the country's development."

Following the plenary session, the forum continued with panels and roundtable discussions. These included discussions on Russia's economic development strategy, the institutional architecture of a multipolar world, economic security tools for businesses, the development of foreign economic relations, and finance in the platform economy. Topical issues in modern economic science, technological sovereignty, and the role of moral guidelines in shaping a new development paradigm were also discussed.

It should be noted that the Lviv Forum at the State University of Management remains not only a tribute to the memory of an outstanding scholar whose ideas on fair and socially oriented economic management at the level of states and continents remain relevant today, but also a platform for the exchange of fresh scientific ideas and expert discussions, which, as Academician Kleiner said, reflect the light of the future of economic theory.

An important disclaimer is at the bottom of this article.

On the section from the 643rd to the 654th km of the R-228 Syzran-Saratov-Volgograd highway in the Volgograd region, major repairs of 11 km of the road were completed ahead of schedule, Deputy Prime Minister Marat Khusnullin reported.

"In road maintenance, widening existing roadways is crucial. Given the growing car ownership, increased traffic volume, and increased population mobility, this helps reduce congestion, increases road capacity, and improves driver and passenger comfort. In the Volgograd Region, near the town of Dubovka, on the R-228 Syzran-Saratov-Volgograd highway, major repairs have been completed on an 11-kilometer section, including 7 kilometers widened to four lanes. Remarkably, road workers completed the task a year ahead of schedule. Up to 30,000 vehicles used this section daily. Now, it will be able to handle up to 40,000 vehicles per day. This work will have a very positive impact on travel efficiency and convenience, and will also be an important step in strengthening the region's transport links and stimulating its future growth," said Marat Khusnullin.

To improve traffic safety, a centerline barrier with anti-glare screens and nearly 8 (7.9) kilometers of electric lighting lines were installed. Additionally, three U-turn loops were added at km 647, 650, and 653, and transitional/accelerated lanes were installed at seven exits and junctions.

In Dubovka, at the intersection of Moskovskaya and Yubileynaya Streets, the traffic light was replaced, adding additional sections to regulate pedestrian traffic. For the convenience and safety of local residents, 10 new bus stops were installed, equipped with access bays and pedestrian crossings with zebra markings. Additionally, approximately 800 meters of sidewalks with tactile paving were laid along the entire section, significantly improving accessibility for people with disabilities.

The work was carried out by the Volgograd branch of the Federal State Institution "Moscow-Volgograd Federal Road Administration", which is subordinate to the Federal Road Agency.
