Strength in Unity: What Russia Celebrates on November 4th and Why This Day Is Particularly Close to RUDN

Since 2004, Russia has celebrated National Unity Day on November 4. For the university, which houses students from approximately 170 countries, this date is imbued with special meaning. It is an opportunity to recall a deep historical tradition that directly resonates with the university's modern mission.

The historical root of the holiday: the end of the Time of Troubles

To understand the essence of the holiday, we must travel back to the early 17th century. This period, known as the Time of Troubles, was one of the most difficult in Russian history. The state was torn apart by social conflicts, pretenders succeeded one another on the throne, famine and devastation engulfed the country, and Polish and Swedish invaders invaded. Authority was so weakened that Polish troops occupied Moscow for two whole years—from 1610 to 1612.

In response to the intervention, a national liberation movement unfolded in Russia. For 15 months and 9 days, monks and laity held the Trinity Monastery of St. Sergius against the Polish forces and False Dmitry II. Patriarch Hermogenes of Moscow and All Rus' appealed to the people to expel the invaders and defend the Orthodox faith. He sent letters throughout the unoccupied lands calling for the formation of people's militias. Hermogenes suffered for his stance. The Poles imprisoned him, where he died in February 1612.

The first militia, led by Ryazan voivode Prokopy Petrovich Lyapunov, failed to build on its success on the approaches to Moscow due to conflicting interests and inadequate preparation. The second militia was led by Nizhny Novgorod mayor Kuzma Minin and Prince Dmitry Mikhailovich Pozharsky. They demonstrated that all strata of society could rise to defend the Fatherland.

The desire to liberate Russia united representatives of various classes—from peasants and tradesmen to Cossacks, clergy, nobles, and boyars. In late September 1612, the army of Pozharsky and Minin joined forces with the Cossacks led by the boyar-voivode Prince Dmitry Timofeevich Trubetskoy. On November 4, 1612 (New Style), Kitai-Gorod was stormed and the Kremlin was besieged. Two days later, the Polish garrison capitulated. From history to modern times

The memory of Minin and Pozharsky's heroic deeds lived on for centuries. Eventually, Muscovites decided to erect a monument to the militia heroes, Kuzma Minin and Dmitry Pozharsky. The sculpture was created by I.P. Martos with donations from people across Russia. On February 20, 1818 (Old Style), the monument was erected in the center of Red Square, and in 1931, it was moved to St. Basil's Cathedral. In the 19th century, there were also plans to erect a monument to Patriarch Hermogenes, but it wasn't until 2013 that it was realized. The sculpture was finally erected in the Alexander Garden near the Eternal Flame.

"2025 is a year of many anniversaries. The 80th anniversary of the Soviet people's victory in the Great Patriotic War, the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II, the 80th anniversary of the founding of the United Nations. And then there's our most important professional anniversary—the 80th anniversary of the nuclear industry. Of course, nuclear technology is much older, but I think you're generally aware of it, and I'll remind you of the event and date we consider our birthday, the background we bring to this anniversary, and, most importantly, our future plans, because you, in fact, are the generation that must implement these plans," the head of Rosatom began his speech with these words.

Alexey Likhachev immersed the audience in the history of the origins of atomic science, which was pioneered by Mikhail Lomonosov, Dmitry Mendeleev, Antoine Becquerel, who discovered the phenomenon of radioactivity, and Albert Einstein, who described the proportions between mass and energy with the famous formula E = mc².

"This formula is the whole point of nuclear energy; this is where this enormous, unknown energy comes from," noted Alexey Likhachev.

Turning to the Soviet aspect of atomic science, the speaker first noted: "Petrograd, Leningrad, and St. Petersburg can rightfully be considered the center of atomic knowledge and atomic technology in our country. The radiological and X-ray laboratories founded here under Lunacharsky's direction gave rise to two enormous institutes: the Khlopin Radium Institute and the legendary Ioffe Phystech Institute. It was from here that the Soviet school of peaceful atomic research began. By the 1940s, our country had become the leader in the atomic race of those years, while all work was exclusively peaceful in nature."

Alexey Likhachev recommended films and TV series about the creation of nuclear weapons to the students and emphasized that while our country was not the first to develop nuclear weapons, the Soviet Union was the leader in developing the peaceful uses of nuclear energy. Furthermore, these students will be able to participate in our flagship project to create the nuclear energy of the future, conducting research to validate the performance of the pumping equipment for the BREST-OD-300 reactor. It's currently being built in the Tomsk region as part of a fourth-generation energy complex," said Alexey Likhachev.

The renovation of the hydromechanical engineering laboratory was made possible thanks to financial support from Rosenergoatom Concern. Guests were given a tour and introduced to several of the facilities and research rigs. Particular attention was paid to the rig for testing low-speed centrifugal pumps, developed by students, as well as the rig for cavitation and energy testing of axial pumps, which, among other things, was used for experimental studies on fine-tuning the flow path of the main circulation pump for the innovative BREST-OD-300 nuclear reactor.

In the laboratory, students from the Higher School of Power Engineering and the Higher School of Nuclear and Thermal Energy study the course "Pumps for Thermal and Nuclear Power Plants" and become familiar with the design and operation principles of pumping equipment for nuclear power plants.

"The nuclear industry is of paramount importance to the Polytechnic University. In the 20th century, it was the Polytechnic University students who pioneered the legendary Atomic Energy Project. The name of Igor Kurchatov, an outstanding scientist who studied and worked at the Leningrad Polytechnic Institute, is associated with it. Yuli Khariton, Kirill Shchelkin, Yakov Zeldovich, Anatoly Alexandrov, Isaak Kikoin, Nikolai Dollezhal, Nikolai Dukhov, Georgy Flerov—these and other outstanding Polytechnic University scientists and designers became iconic figures in the atomic energy project, and their names are forever etched in gold in the history of the country. The Atomfest program included numerous other events. A job fair was held at the Technopolis Polytech Research Building. Representatives from over twenty Rosatom enterprises and organizations spoke with students, including Atomenergoproekt, TVEL, AAEM Turbine Technologies, the Kirov-Energomash plant, the AEM-Technologies engineering company, AEM-Spetsstal, the Central Design Bureau of Mechanical Engineering, Centrotech-Engineering, the V.G. Stanislav Skvortsov, a graduate of the Polytechnic University's Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and head of the mechatronics and robotics laboratory at JSC TsKBM, discussed the hazardous industries in which robots are replacing humans, what constitutes a robot, what types of robots currently exist, and what types of work they perform better and worse.

At the educational lecture "Safety as a Priority," Gleb Pozhidaev, a graduate of the Institute of Power Engineering and a personnel training engineer at the Rosatom State Corporation Technical Academy, shared his experience in the field of safety culture and training specialists for the nuclear industry. He discussed the key principles of safety culture, which include not only the use of personal protective equipment but also effective communication, creating a comfortable work environment, adhering to regulations, and developing a systems approach.

Gleb Pozhidaev paid special attention to Rosatom's international projects. Specifically, he noted that during the construction of the Akkuyu (Turkey) and El Dabaa (Egypt) nuclear power plants, Russian specialists not only construct the facilities but also actively train personnel in these countries to manage technological processes and operate the plants in accordance with high safety standards.

A virtual tour organized by representatives of the Leningrad Nuclear Power Plant (LNPP) was particularly interesting. The plant's employees described the plant's operations, the specifics of nuclear energy, its corporate culture, and life in the town of Sosnovy Bor, where the LNPP is located. A highlight of Atomfest was a meeting with Vasily Korelsky, a former Ostankino TV journalist and now the Director of Communications at the Akkuyu Nuclear Power Plant. The speaker described the construction of Turkey's first nuclear power plant, one of the largest in the world, the international and friendly team that has formed there, and the fact that some of the employees there are Turkish citizens, including Polytechnic University graduates.

Atomfest was not only an educational but also an entertaining event. Students could collect stickers for checklists, participate in quizzes and games organized by the Rosatom Student Community, and receive gifts while visiting events and employer booths. At the end of the day, a drawing was held for the grand prize—tickets to the AtomProfi youth forum in Sochi from November 26 to 28. November 4th is a date rooted in the events of 1612. During those turbulent times, people of all classes and faiths united to preserve the country's independence and cultural heritage. This example teaches us that together we can overcome any challenge.

Today, in an era of rapid change, the spirit of unity is especially important. It manifests itself in joint scientific breakthroughs that strengthen Russia's technological sovereignty, as well as in solidarity and support for one another.

This unity is clearly felt at our Polytechnic University. People from different regions and countries study and work side by side. Russian-Chinese Conference "Differential and Difference Equations" The conference is taking place at Novosibirsk State University from October 31 to November 6. The event brings together scientists from nine countries: Russia, China, Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Brazil, and the United Arab Emirates. Around 150 mathematicians are participating in the conference, including more than 30 from China. Mathematicians from Moscow, St. Petersburg, Perm, Yakutsk, Mirny, Irkutsk, Krasnoyarsk, Chelyabinsk, Yekaterinburg, Nalchik, Khanty-Mansiysk, and other cities are also participating.

The conference is organized into three sections: “Partial Differential Equations,” “Functional Differential Equations,” and “Mathematical Modeling and Computational Mathematics.”

Opening the conference, leading researcher of the International Scientific and Educational Mathematical Center, head of the Department of Differential Equations Faculty of Mechanics and Mathematics of NSUGennady Demidenko, head of the Laboratory of Differential and Difference Equations at the Sobolev Institute of Mathematics, Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences, noted that this is a significant event for mathematicians. A similar event took place in Akademgorodok exactly two years ago.

— The conference program covers many sections of differential equations, as well as their applications to various areas of natural science. Differential equations have had in the past and, of course, will have in the future a huge impact on the main types of human activity. Very strong relationships have been established between Chinese and Russian mathematicians. We now maintain close ties with a group of scientists from Shanghai University and Shanghai Customs University. Our conference became possible thanks to the very close cooperation of mathematicians at the S.L. Institute of Mathematics. Sobolev SB RAS, Institute of Hydrodynamics named after M.A. Lavrentiev SB RAS, Institute of Catalysis named after G.K. Boreskov SB RAS, Institute of Computational Mathematics and Mathematical Geophysics SB RAS and, of course, Novosibirsk State University. The connections between these institutes and the university were established more than 60 years ago by the founding fathers of the Novosibirsk Academgorodok, the great scientists of the 20th century – academicians Mikhail Lavrentyev, Sergei Sobolev and Sergei Khristianovich. I note that these three scientists made a huge contribution to the development of the theory of differential equations. The International Mathematical Center in Akademgorodok provided significant assistance in preparing the conference, and employees of the Laboratory of Differential and Difference Equations of the Institute of Mathematics named after S.L. were responsible for the preparation and holding of the event. Sobolev SB RAS and the Department of Differential Equations of the MMF NSU, as well as the group “Differential Equations and Dynamical Systems” of the Mathematical Center,” said Gennady Demidenko.

Shanghai University Professor Hu Guangda emphasized the importance of collaboration between Russian and Chinese mathematicians.

"Russian science has a profound influence on mathematical research in China. Our country has many scientists engaged in applied and computational mathematics. This is my third visit to Novosibirsk to attend a scientific conference, and each time I gain a wealth of new information. At one such event in 2019, I met the great computational mathematician Sergei Konstantinovich Godunov. Professor Godunov's research is a source of pride for Russian and human civilization as a whole. I have learned a great deal from numerous scientific discussions with NSU professors. Through the exchange of ideas with my Russian colleagues, I have been inspired and have further developed my research. And my paper, which I will present at this conference, is related to this research," he emphasized.

In his welcoming speech, NSU Rector and RAS Academician Mikhail Fedoruk noted the relevance and significance of the event.

"Differential equations are the most important language for describing nature for us. I've spent my entire life working primarily with difference equations, the equations of mathematical physics—primarily nonlinear ones—and I'm amazed at how relatively simple equations can describe complex natural phenomena. This is what's called the incomprehensible effectiveness of mathematics. Therefore, I'm confident that this conference will further advance both the theory of differential and difference equations and their application to practical problems, which, in my view, is the most important thing," said Mikhail Fedoruk.

Cong Yuhao, Rector of Shanghai Customs University, emphasized the importance of deepening academic cooperation in areas of science directly related to the conference's theme.

"Today, our Russian colleagues, following the academic traditions of their illustrious predecessors, combining theoretical and applied aspects, are achieving new scientific results. We hope that during this conference, we will be able to learn from their experience and become familiar with the latest research of Russian scientists. Mathematics is an international science, and strengthening academic exchange between scientists from different countries is an important path to continuous development. And our participation in this conference reflects this idea," noted Cong Yuhao.

Igor Marchuk, Dean of the NSU Faculty of Mechanics and Mathematics, said that studying at the NSU Faculty of Mechanics and Mathematics is closely linked to research. In this area, the Faculty has established a long-standing and fruitful collaboration with the People's Republic of China. Students from China successfully study at the Faculty of Mechanics and Mathematics and defend not only bachelor's and master's theses, but also PhD theses.

Approximately a quarter of the conference participants will be young scientists presenting their papers. Many have previously successfully participated in student and youth conferences, but presenting at such a prestigious event will be their first.
