Five polytechnicians became laureates of the first national award "People Change the Country". The award ceremony took place in the Zaryadye Concert Hall in Moscow.

This year, the award was received by more than a thousand laureates in seven nominations: "National Social Initiative", "National Technological Initiative", "National Entrepreneurial Initiative", "National Personnel Initiative", "National Ecological and Climate Initiative", "Defenders of the Fatherland" and "Russia – the Land of Opportunities".

Alexey Borovkov received a high award for actively promoting approaches to creating globally competitive science-intensive products using advanced end-to-end digital technologies. One of the key areas of his activity is the development and implementation of the technology of "digital twins" – an innovative tool that allows you to create virtual copies of products, machines, structures, equipment, as well as model physical, mechanical and technological processes with the highest accuracy. Under the leadership of Alexey Ivanovich, the digital platform CML-Bench® was developed, tested and successfully implemented in production, which became a key tool for creating digital twins. It opened up new opportunities for optimizing design, increasing production efficiency and reducing costs in various industries.

Other significant projects implemented under the leadership of Alexey Borovkov include: development of body frame elements and structural armor elements for domestic Limousine, Sedan, SUV, and Minibus vehicles based on a single modular platform commissioned by FSUE NAMI; creation of a smart digital twin and experimental prototype of a small-sized urban electric vehicle with a level 3-4 ADAS system (KAMA-1); optimization of the weight of the TV7-117ST-01 engine based on the digital twin technology for UEC-Klimov/JSC UEC; development of a digital twin of a marine gas turbine engine and gearbox as part of the unit commissioned by UEC-Saturn (Rostec State Corporation); creation of the architecture of a highly adequate multiphysical digital model and a digital twin of a vitrification furnace for high-level radioactive waste for PO Mayak (Rosatom State Corporation), etc.

Nikolay Efimov-Soini, Deputy Director of the Engineering Center "Computer Engineering Center" of the Advanced Engineering School of SPbPU "Digital Engineering", became a laureate thanks to the project "Development of high-tech products in the field of nuclear engineering based on digital twin technology". Under the leadership of Nikolay Konstantinovich, a large-scale complex of scientific and technical developments in the field of nuclear engineering of strategic importance for the industry was implemented over three years. Among the key achievements is the creation of digital models of fuel assemblies (FA) for VVER and TVS-K reactors, as well as the proposal of innovative design solutions aimed at increasing the efficiency of fuel assemblies. The developed solutions allow for high-precision modeling of FA behavior throughout the entire fuel cycle, which helps optimize the performance characteristics and improve the safety of nuclear power plants.

'Nimble' on the move: Polytechnic students study Russia

The student conductor team "Provorny" has once again set off to explore the remote regions of our country during the work season. The polytechnicians work as conductors for the Federal Passenger Company and make trips to Moscow, Smolensk, Velikiye Luki, Anapa, Kislovodsk, Yeysk, Taganrog. They also work on the international route to Sukhum.

The season of guides is very specific. Participants and candidates are divided into small groups, on average six people, and work under the guidance of two experienced team leaders. This year, the student team "Provorny" formed five teams.

The team "Complivit Egor Vnukov" visited Smolensk. During the trip, young candidates were able to use in practice all the knowledge they had received during their training and demonstrated their skills in real conditions.

“During the long downtime, we explored the city center, visited the House of the Opposite, and looked at local attractions. We also found out who would climb the mountain faster, tried berry punch and mocha from an old machine. We held two commissariats: “Your Game” with exciting tasks and “Trend by Colors,” where each participant received their own color and created photos with it. As a souvenir of Smolensk, we took away a toy that we called Not Hehe. Now it will accompany us on every trip,” the guys shared.

Among the SPbPU brigades, one team stands out, which participates in the All-Russian Labor Project. Its goal is to improve the level of professional activity of conductors and diversify their leisure time in their free time. The VTP brigade includes ten of the most active polytechnics. The leadership was taken over by Ulyana Shtol, Egor Samokhvalov and Dima Afanasyev, who will be responsible for organizing events and coordinating the work.

"Provorny" competes with 15 teams from different regions of Russia. During the season, the guys face the following tasks: to achieve high performance indicators, including the volume of products sold and the number of hours worked, to conduct active commissar activities, to hold events for passengers. In addition, throughout the summer, many different events are held: Spartakiad, competitions for the best team corner and in the media, "Miss and Mister VTP", a creative festival and others. And in each of them, the polytechnicians will try to show maximum results.

The East is a promising business: Polytechnic and Chinese institutes on the way to new projects

A delegation from Jiangsu Industrial Technology Research Institute (JITRI) and Tsinghua University Suzhou Automobile Research Institute (TSARI) arrived at Peter the Great St. Petersburg Polytechnic University to strengthen their strategic partnership. The visit was led by JITRI First Deputy Director Gao Jun.

China is a key partner of SPbPU: the university has more than 60 active agreements with Chinese universities and companies, including two large joint institutes in Jiangsu and Xi'an, where over a thousand students study. SPbPU itself has 2,200 Chinese students — almost half of the foreign contingent.

The meeting participants discussed the expansion of academic mobility programs. Of particular interest was the JITRI Co-op internship program, which provides paid internships at leading Chinese research institutes and companies in the following areas: new materials, information and communication technologies, energy, biotechnology, and advanced manufacturing. Scientific cooperation will also receive a boost: the parties agreed to intensify joint projects in the field of digital twins of power plants, artificial intelligence for industrial systems and polymer composite materials. Three major projects are already being implemented, including the BRICS grant won in sustainable development management with Nanjing University.

"Today, our laboratories are looking to the East," said Dmitry Arsenyev, Vice-Rector for International Affairs at SPbPU. "China has not only caught up with the technological leaders, but is setting new standards, and the Polytechnic University will orient students toward internships at JITRI, in your laboratories and at production facilities. This is a new vector — from the fundamental research of the Polytechnic University to Chinese industrial practice."

In response, the JITRI delegation proposed the creation of working groups to develop specific initiatives, including joint workshops and the involvement of industrial partners.

Prospects for cooperation include the participation of the Russian Academy of Sciences: SPbPU is closely connected with its St. Petersburg branch, which unites 50 research institutes. In the world of books and artifacts: participants of the SPbPU library forum visited a rare excursion

A library forum was recently held at the Polytechnic University "KorFor-2025"A special gift for the forum guests was a tour of rare and often closed to the general public libraries of St. Petersburg.

During the visit to the Scientific Library of the Russian Geographical Society, the specialists got acquainted with a rare collection of books, maps and documents. These materials reflect almost all expeditions in Russia and other countries that took place under the auspices of the Russian Geographical Society. The reports on Arctic expeditions and the history of the discovery of the Northern Sea Route deserve special attention. The guests had the opportunity to get acquainted with rare editions of the 17th-19th centuries, representing historical and cultural significance.

Head of the library Maria Bystrova told the guests in detail about the unique collections and modern methods of cataloguing and storing valuable materials.

The librarians also got a glimpse into the inner life of the St. Petersburg Theological Academy of the Russian Orthodox Church: they walked along the rector's corridor, visited the museum and classrooms, looked into the cozy reading room and, of course, into the library, the largest in the Orthodox world. Currently, its collection contains about 315,000 books, periodicals and musical editions. The library collection contains books mainly of theological and church-historical content. Student design bureaus: a breeding ground for engineering personnel

The Polytechnic University held an intensive educational course "Student Design Bureaus as a Tool for Preparing Highly Motivated and Conscious Engineers" for employees of industrial partner companies. Participants discussed how design bureaus help students master real engineering tasks.

The goal of the intensive course is to introduce representatives of enterprises to the capabilities of SKB, demonstrate examples of successful projects and discuss prospects for joint work on developing the country's engineering potential. Head of SKB "System Engineering", Director of the Higher School of Power Engineering Alena Aleshina emphasized that SPbPU SKB is built as a multi-level ecosystem: school KBs – youth KBs – student KBs – employer. This allows us to identify talented children at early stages, support their training and involve them in project activities.

The participants of the intensive course discussed the development trajectories of student design bureaus at universities, their goals and objectives, as well as the role of an industrial partner in this system. Special attention was paid to how to establish cooperation between an enterprise and SKB SPbPU, how student projects help solve specific problems under the guidance of curators representing companies, and ensure an influx of qualified personnel. The experts also shared examples of successfully implemented projects.

The presentation session presented the areas of work of SKB "System Engineering", starting with school design bureaus and ending with the best practices of interaction between industry and the university.

The project to create a network of school design bureaus is a joint initiative of the Government of St. Petersburg and the Advanced Engineering School "Digital Engineering" of SPbPU (PISH CI). Director of the Center for Continuing Professional Education of PISH CI Sergey Salkutsan said that SHKB is a network of engineering creativity clubs based in schools. Students in grades 8–11, under the guidance of instructors, master engineering skills, work with modern software and solve real problems of industrial companies. The goal is early career guidance for schoolchildren, development of practical competencies and training of future qualified personnel for the industry.

In the X-Lab Engineering Creativity Laboratory, students learn to combine knowledge from different disciplines when solving practical problems. Senior research fellow at PISh CI Mikhail Zhmailo spoke about the project workshop, which is part of the educational program and combines design, engineering, digital manufacturing, project management, and teamwork.

Head of the engineering team Polytech Voltage Machine, engineer of the Higher School of Transport IMMiT SPbPU Vsevolod Gaiduk introduced the intensive participants to the team that develops robotic platforms for high cross-country ability and ground electric transport. Polytechnicians create solutions for people with disabilities and for firefighting.

Arseniy Klyuev, Senior Lecturer at the Higher School of Power Engineering, spoke in more detail about the SKB Power Machines — Polytech. This is a unique educational cluster focused on training personnel for the Power Machines company. The end-to-end training trajectory begins with the school's engineering classes and continues through youth and student design bureaus, bachelor's and master's programs. Director of the Higher School of High-Voltage Power Engineering Viktor Belko showed the structure of the Electrical Machines department within the SKB Power Machines — Polytech. For example, the Electrical Insulation Laboratory trains personnel in the context of growing demand for domestic technologies. The main goal is to involve students in research activities from their first years to accumulate practical experience in the field of electrical insulation and electrical machines, which cannot be fully ensured within the framework of traditional educational standards. The center, based on successful experience in fulfilling contracts in the field of electrical engineering and an established research base, interacts with industrial partners and forms flexible teams of students under the supervision of specialists from the university and companies.

Of particular interest was the practical case of interaction between the Power Machines company and students, starting from the second year, in terms of participation in the educational program. Leading project manager Alexandra Grigorieva presented the areas of work and the results of interaction with SPbPU within the framework of the Power Machines Trajectory, which formed the basis for the advanced training of junior students for further participation in the Power Machines – Polytech SKB. Students gain the opportunity to receive a scholarship, master a working profession and find employment.

The seminar participants visited the laboratories and workspaces of the SKB "System Engineering" teams and saw the students' developments. Russian-Armenian educational partnership: the second launch of the course "Fundamentals of project activities" with the Polytechnic University

The Russian-Armenian University in Yerevan held the final defense of student projects completed within the framework of the course "Fundamentals of Project Activity" (OPA), which SPbPU and RAU have been implementing for the second year. 20 project teams were admitted to the in-person defense, and 19 of them successfully confirmed their results, demonstrating a noticeable qualitative growth compared to the pilot launch of the 2023/2024 academic year. 17 teams showed significant product and educational results.

The course "Fundamentals of Project Activities" is part of the strategic partnership of the two universities and a key tool for implementing a practice-oriented education model. Since the 2024/2025 academic year, the discipline has become mandatory for five areas of study at the Institute of Economics and Business of RAU (economics, tourism, trade and hotel business, management) and was available optionally to students of other programs. Starting next year, at the initiative of the management and teachers of RAU, there will be even more areas of study where this discipline will be mandatory.

The second launch of the course at RAU involved 12 mentor teachers, whose training began in December 2024. RAU teachers completed an intensive course on project activity tools and mentoring of student projects, and experienced the entire process of completing the course that students face.

In February 2025, an introductory lecture was held for RAU students, where they learned about the structure and features of the upcoming course. The lecture was given by teachers of SPbPU and RAU: senior researcher of the International Academic Competence Center "Intelligent Enterprise Technologies" of the Digital Engineering School Anton Ambrazhey, senior lecturer of the Higher School of Project Activity and Innovation in Industry (IMMiT) Inna Seledtsova and head of the Department of Educational Policy and Quality Control of Education of RAU Ruzanna Airapetova.

In April 2025, Anton Ambrazhey and Inna Seledtsova visited RAU on a working visit, discussed the intermediate results of the projects with the teams and course mentors, and gave recommendations for their further implementation and specification.

A distinctive feature of the second launch of the course at RAU was the involvement of external customers (travel agency GoToDili, Green Rock, Green Training Center). The projects presented by the customers confirmed the trend that began to form during the first launch: the OPD course at RAU is capable of creating a new level and diversity of products in the tourism landscape of Armenia. Thus, most of the projects this year from internal and external customers of RAU were dedicated to the current needs of the tourism industry of Armenia, and the internal tasks of the university were also well presented as projects.

According to the results of the 2024/2025 competition, the first place was taken by the project "Conducting an assessment of the quality of education by students of the Institute of Economics and Business", completed by students of the Management program under the mentorship of the senior manager of the Department of Economics and Finance Iveta Stepanyan. The second place was taken by the project "Cultural and educational event "Russian Language Day", mentored by Associate Professor of the Department of Russian Language and Professional Communication Liana Petrosyan. The third place went to the project "Green Tourism", implemented under the guidance of the chief manager of correspondence courses of the IEB Lolita Tashchyan.

"At the last defense, seventeen projects out of twenty received high scores. It is clear that a core of motivated mentors and students is being formed. Perhaps it is the personalized approach to the team, the high involvement of mentors that is the unique path of RAU project activities, along which we will continue to help colleagues develop," noted Anton Ambrazhey.

Inna Seledtsova emphasized the research significance of the work: "It is very important that many projects have come closer to understanding the true needs of the end users of their project results: someone went with a mentor to Dilijan to talk to tourists, someone conducted online surveys with business owners and identified an unobvious need for training, someone conducted surveys among students. We still have room to grow in the quality of such studies, which are a key link in understanding the problems of the project, but the first steps in this year's research were very worthy."

At the final series of meetings with mentors, with the Vice-Rector of RAU for Academic Affairs Marina Khachatryan, with the Head of the Department of Educational Policy and Quality Control of Education of RAU Ruzanna Ayrapetova, the course support team from SPbPU recorded development vectors for the next academic year: localization of part of the educational content, adaptation of project activity artifacts to the specifics of RAU, strengthening of the internal PR course, training of new mentors in the fall of 2025 and the third launch of the course with updated materials in February 2026.

An important result of the second launch of the course was the formation of the need for independent processes for implementing the "Fundamentals of Project Activity" at RAU. If in the first launches the course was supported, for the most part, within the framework of processes identical to SPbPU, then by the upcoming third launch not only the need for content localization has been identified, but also the need for our own student assessment system, for motivating them and mentors, for adaptation to online learning, since the OPD course became RAU's first experience in mass online learning. All this will form the basis for the joint work of SPbPU and RAU in the next academic year.

Delegation from Arkhangelsk region visited Polytech

A working meeting was held at Peter the Great St. Petersburg Polytechnic University between SPbPU Rector Andrey Rudskoy, the Minister of Science, Higher Education and Technological Development of the Arkhangelsk Region Alexey Aksenov and the Acting Rector of the Northern (Arctic) Federal University named after M.V. The main topic of discussion was the creation of the "Competence Center for the Application of Laser Welding and Additive Technologies in Shipbuilding". Today, we are betting on the development of advanced technologies in the field of materials science, laser and additive processes, digital engineering – those areas that are already determining the appearance of the industry of the future. Cooperation with colleagues from the Arctic region opens up new horizons: we combine fundamental science, engineering schools and real production tasks. I am confident that this synergy will become the basis for comprehensive solutions that can change the infrastructure of the North and become an example for other regions of the country," Andrey Rudskoy emphasized.

It is worth noting that over the course of three years of close cooperation with the Scientific and Educational Center "Russian Arctic" of NArFU, specialists of the Scientific and Research Laboratory "Laser and Additive Technologies" of IMMiT SPbPU have completed several projects on direct laser growth and laser welding of thin metals. Now the polytechnicians are faced with the task of developing a technology for hybrid laser-arc welding of samples with a blunting thickness of at least 30 mm. In the future, joint interests include the creation of a technological complex and the introduction of laser technologies into the production of city-forming enterprises.

At the meeting, the guests voiced a proposal to create a center, discussed the levels of interaction and upcoming stages of joint work.

The guests examined the equipment of the Laser and Additive Technologies Research Laboratory in most detail. They were interested in the robotic technological complexes and exhibits manufactured as part of joint projects with the Russian Arctic Research and Education Center of NArFU.

"In recent years, within the framework of cooperation with the Scientific and Educational Center "Russian Arctic" of NArFU, we have successfully implemented several projects using direct laser growth and laser welding technologies. We see great interest in laser technologies from the Arctic region and are confident that the next stage of cooperation will allow us to move from pilot solutions to large-scale integration of technologies into production," said Mikhail Kuznetsov, Director of the Russian-German Center for Laser Technologies.

Alexey Aksenov and Mikhail Danilov showed keen interest in the scientific developments of the Polytechnic University and expressed readiness for further cooperation. Following the meeting, a decision was made to hold a series of working meetings for a more detailed discussion of the project.

The visit of the delegation from the Arkhangelsk region became an important step towards strengthening interregional scientific and technical cooperation. The largest number – 26,000 applications – were received by the Institute of Computer Science and Cybersecurity, in second place (25,000) – the Institute of Industrial Management, Economics and Trade, in third (12,000) – the Institute of Mechanical Engineering, Materials and Transport.

Polytechnic University's breakthrough projects received grant support from the Russian Science Foundation

The Russian Science Foundation has summed up the results of three competitions for 2025, including one for the extension of ongoing projects.

Following the results of the Russian Science Foundation's competition for grant support for fundamental and exploratory scientific research in 2025–2028, 211 projects were supported. They are being carried out by research groups led by young candidates and doctors of science under the age of 35. Including three developments of the Polytechnic University, support was provided.

According to the results of the examination, the following Polytechnic projects will receive from 3 to 6 million rubles annually:

"Synaptic dysfunction in hippocampal neurons in Alzheimer's disease and methods of their correction: the influence of the endoplasmic reticulum structure and ryanodine receptors" under the supervision of Ekaterina Pchitskaya, Institute of Coronary Heart Diseases and Bone Health; "Molecular mechanisms of the influence of recombinant interferon-lambda on the course and outcome of secondary bacterial pneumonia developing against the background of influenza infection" under the supervision of Alexey Lozhkov, Institute of Coronary Heart Diseases and Bone Health; "Modeling and optimization of thermochemical technology for hydrogen production based on the sulfur-iodine cycle" under the supervision of Ekaterina Sokolova, Institute of Economics.

Following the results of the RSF competition for conducting initiative fundamental and exploratory scientific research by young scientists and candidates of science under the age of 33 in 2025–2027, 327 projects were supported. Including five SPbPU projects:

"Innovative Alkaline Electrolytes Based on Nanofluids for Highly Efficient Hydrogen Production by Water Electrolysis", Supervised by Sadeghi Khashayar, Institute of Economics; "Development of a Lingvodidactic Model of Sustainable Learning Using Artificial Intelligence", Supervised by Ekaterina Shostak, Institute of Economics; "Development of Scientific and Technological Foundations for the Formation of Biomedical Materials with a Given Gradient of Properties by Selective Laser Melting for Personalized Implantology", Supervised by Igor Polozov, Institute of Mathematics and Electronics; "Development of a System for Predicting the Failure of the Strength of Load-Bearing Metal Structures at Sub-zero Temperatures Using Digital Twin Technology", Supervised by Ivan Vasiliev, Institute of Mathematics and Electronics; "Multimode Fiber Bragg Gratings with Optimal Spectral Response", Supervised by Alexander Markvart, Institute of Economics and Electronics.

The grant amount will be up to 1.5 million rubles annually.

Based on the results of the competition for the extension of the deadlines for projects implemented under the supervision of young scientists in 2025–2027, the SPbPU project “Study of the antiviral activity of small interfering RNAs against rotavirus infection when administered orally in complexes with hybrid microcarriers” was supported, led by Alexandra Brodskaya, IBSiB.

The annual grant amount will be from 3 to 6 million rubles.

To make it even better, we will set more global tasks.
