Modular Cities in the Arctic: Polytech Creates New Standards of Comfortable Housing

Translation. Region: Russian Federal

An important disclaimer is at the bottom of this article.

The Polytechnic University has taken on a serious project — the Institute of Civil Engineering of SPbPU is thinking about how to build quickly and efficiently in the Arctic. A research group led by associate professors of the Higher School of Design and Architecture of the Institute of Civil Engineering Elena Ladik and Maria Drebezgova is developing a concept for modular structures that can be quickly assembled in the harsh conditions of the Arctic. The work takes into account the complexities of the Arctic climate and the need to build facilities in a short time — this is an important condition for the successful development of the region.

The development of the polytechnicians is dedicated to improving the quality of life in the Arctic region. The relevance of the project is that it helps solve several problems at once, such as the development of natural resources, the development of infrastructure in hard-to-reach places, environmental protection and the creation of normal living conditions for people.

Last year, the research team investigated the development potential of northern territories, studied foreign and domestic experience in designing modular architecture and developed a concept for quickly erected residential, public and laboratory modules adapted to extreme climatic conditions. The results of the study were presented at all-Russian forums and conferences, where they received high praise from the expert community.

Next year, scientists plan to apply their developments in pilot projects. Research will continue, now with an emphasis on modeling the engineering systems of territories, refining design calculations and selecting optimal building materials for the Far North. A multidisciplinary approach will allow the project to be implemented more quickly.

Modular buildings are a real find for the Arctic. They are easy to move from place to place, save energy, are made of modern materials that retain heat well and are not afraid of harsh weather. Perhaps it is modular architecture that will become a key direction in the Arctic construction industry.

“The practical significance of the study lies in the possibility of using the results in assessing prefabricated block modules, developing architectural solutions in design practice for residential and research stations in the Arctic regions, as well as in developing recommendations for their further use based on the developed principles,” said project manager and associate professor at the Civil Engineering Institute Elena Ladik.

The Polytechnic University is completing the process of accepting documents for budget-funded bachelor's and specialist's degrees

Translation. Region: Russian Federal

Source: Peter the Great St. Petersburg Polytechnic University –

An important disclaimer is at the bottom of this article.

The admissions campaign at Peter the Great St. Petersburg Polytechnic University is in full swing, and its first stage is coming to an end. On July 25 at 12:00 Moscow time, the deadline for accepting documents for the bachelor's and specialist's programs of full-time budgetary education ends. Applicants have only one day left to submit an application and finally decide on their future profession.

Currently, more than 139,000 applications have been submitted for bachelor's and specialist's degree programs, which confirms the high interest of applicants in the Polytechnic University. In terms of the number of applications, the leading positions are still occupied by the Institute of Computer Science and Cybersecurity, the Institute of Industrial Management, Economics and Trade, the Institute of Mechanical Engineering, Materials and Transport.

Although you can submit documents to SPbPU online from anywhere in the country, the Admissions Committee is always happy to meet with applicants in person. This year, a modern multifunctional space has been organized in the Reading Room of the Main Academic Building, where you can submit documents with the help of the Admissions Committee staff, sign a training agreement and, of course, submit consent for enrollment (in 2025, it replaces the need to provide an original education document). Next to the Reading Room, there are institute stands where university representatives provide detailed information about training programs, internship opportunities and employment prospects. During the admissions campaign, meetings and tours of laboratories were also held for applicants and their parents, allowing them to get acquainted with the university infrastructure.

This year, in order to be enrolled in a university, it is necessary to provide consent for enrollment instead of the original educational document. At the moment, more than 1,500 applicants have already submitted consent for enrollment.

The main innovation of this year was the "Petrovskaya Wave" program, which guarantees admission to applicants with high scores. If the applicant's score exceeds the established threshold, the university will enroll him or her even in a fee-paying place – at its own expense. In 2025, the wave will apply to some areas of the Institute of Energy, the Institute of Mechanical Engineering, Materials and Transport, and the Institute of Electronics and Telecommunications.

Also in 2025, a new grant system for talented applicants was introduced. Winners and prize winners of Olympiads, as well as students entering with high Unified State Exam scores, can receive a grant of up to 120,000 rubles, as well as an additional payment of 50,000 rubles subject to excellent academic performance. In 2025, more than 500 winners and prize winners of Olympiads applied to the Polytechnic University, of which 150 have already agreed to enroll in the university.

After the document submission process is complete, the enrollment stage will begin. On July 27, the competitive lists will be published, according to which applicants will be able to assess their situation and opportunities for admission. In order to be enrolled in the Polytechnic University, applicants must provide consent for enrollment (on the State Services portal, in person at the admissions office or by mail) within the established deadlines:

until August 1, 12:00 Moscow time — for applicants on quotas and without entrance examinations until August 5, 12:00 Moscow time — for applicants to the main competitive places

On July 2, priority enrollment will take place for preferential categories and winners and prize winners of Olympiads, and on August 7, the main stage of enrollment for full-time budgetary education will take place.

Saint Petersburg Polytechnic University is waiting for its future main heroes and is preparing for a new academic year full of discoveries, scientific achievements and exciting events!

An important disclaimer is at the bottom of this article.

We continue to tell how the student teams of "Polytech" spend their work season. With the beginning of summer holidays, the guys went all over the country to change the environment, earn money and get useful skills for independent living. Today, together with the SSO "Flame" we will visit Surgut, at the construction of a road bridge across the Ob River.

The second Surgut bridge is being built to relieve the only existing crossing over the Ob River, opened in 2000. In general, the facility is a transport network, including a highway, three overpasses, four small bridges and several interchanges. It will connect several Russian regions, help develop the oil and gas industry and the Arctic. The construction of the second Surgut bridge has been declared an all-Russian student construction project. The work is gradually moving towards the end, and the builders expect that thanks to young and energetic assistants, they will complete the construction already in the fourth quarter of this year.

Meanwhile, the guys from "Plamen" are sandblasting the metal structures inside the bridge, carefully cleaning them from traces of corrosion. The girls are not far behind – they paint the bolted connections and welds so that they do not become covered in rust again.

"We went to Surgut for the first time, where we are working with the contractor VMP-Engineering. Despite the completely new conditions, the members of our unit are working on the construction site with great pleasure and helping to complete the facility by the scheduled deadlines," said SSO "Flame" fighter Dmitry Chernyshov.

Students gain valuable experience working with compressors, sandblasting equipment, improve their skills in electricity, mechanics and find new friends. For many, this becomes an important stage in professional development and personal growth. Well, in their free time, the guys explore the sights of Surgut and the local cuisine, walk in the parks, ride the rides, and in the evenings in the hostel the whole group watches films and holds commissar meetings.

The admission campaign for foreign citizens is in full swing at the Polytechnic University

Translation. Region: Russian Federal

Source: Peter the Great St. Petersburg Polytechnic University –

An important disclaimer is at the bottom of this article.

The Polytechnic University is completing the main stage of accepting documents from foreign applicants. During the large-scale campaign, the university team participated in educational exhibitions, quota selections and webinars in the countries of Asia, Africa, Latin America and the CIS.

Since autumn 2024, the university has presented its educational programs at 39 events, including 12 face-to-face (in China, Turkey, Vietnam, Morocco, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan) and six online exhibitions, 17 information webinars and four regional selection rounds jointly with Rossotrudnichestvo representative offices. Foreign applicants familiarized themselves with the new admission algorithms. To promote the Open Doors international Olympiad, which gives talented students a unique opportunity to enter the Polytechnic University and study for free, an interview with the winners was held. They told their compatriots about studying at SPbPU. Also, specialized webinars on the master's and bachelor's degree tracks were held jointly with the Global Universities Association.

This year, a unified algorithm for admission to Russian universities for foreign and Russian citizens was launched. Now foreigners participate in the general competition on an equal basis with Russian schoolchildren. The progress of admission can be monitored in real time through the competition lists, which are already available on the official website of the university. The results of the main stage of enrollment will be known in August. Based on the results of the summer campaign, additional recruitment will take place for the remaining vacancies.

An important innovation of the international Open Doors Olympiad is the opening of the bachelor's degree program for the winners. If previously only applicants for master's and postgraduate studies participated, now future bachelors can too. At the moment, about 300 applications have been received, and about a hundred of them are for bachelor's degree programs. Most of the guys participating in the Olympiad represent foreign countries and do not speak Russian. Therefore, after admission, they will begin their studies with a pre-university training program.

Polytechnic University traditionally attracts great interest from applicants from key regions: the CIS countries (Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan are in the lead), China and other BRICS countries, Turkey and Latin America (especially Colombia and Ecuador). At the same time, the number of representatives of the African continent interested in studying in pre-university training programs is growing at the university. To develop this area, Polytechnic University took part in a special series of events organized by the Rosatom State Corporation. A series of exhibition and presentation webinars and educational lectures covered nuclear technologies in energy and their non-energy applications in related industries. Popular science lectures were given by Associate Professor of the Higher School of Mechanical Engineering Hamuda Khaled and Senior Lecturer of the Higher School of Technosphere Safety Jamilya Idrisova. The goal is to attract students from African countries to Rosatom's flagship universities to study in nuclear and related specialties in Russia.

A significant number of bachelor's and master's degree graduates choose to continue their education at SPbPU. According to preliminary data from the admissions campaign, over 2,000 applications have already been submitted for the main educational programs (bachelor's, master's, postgraduate) under the contract, and over 800 for the preparatory faculty. Candidates within the Russian Federation Government quota are also being considered. Over 800 applications have been processed to date.

The most popular bachelor's degree programs among applicants are economics and international relations, engineering and construction programs, IT and high technology. Of particular interest is the English-language program "International Business".

The following areas are in demand in the Master's program: construction, electric power engineering and electrical engineering, automation of technological processes, management, foreign regional studies, applied mechanics. The following English-language areas are also in demand: "Informatics and computing engineering", "Biotechnical systems and technologies", "Infocommunication technologies and communication systems", "Development of international business", "Intelligent systems", "Microelectronics of infocommunication systems", "Civil engineering" and "Molecular and cellular biotechnology".

In postgraduate studies, technical fields (energy, construction, mechanical engineering) and biotechnology are leading.

"It is difficult to predict the results of the new admissions system, including the movement of competition lists, since this is the first such experience. We recommend that applicants closely monitor updates on the SPbPU website and be prepared for additional recruitment in August. Despite the novelty of the procedure and the complexity of the exams, the interim figures indicate a record interest in studying at the leading technical university in Russia," said Evgeniya Satalkina, Head of the International Education Department.
