— Why did you decide to come to Russia and choose the Saint Petersburg Polytechnic University?

— At 18, I became interested in Russia. There are still specialists who studied in the USSR working in Bolivia, including teachers from my university. I was especially impressed by Russia’s rich history and its engineering feats: the first satellite, the first nuclear power plant in Obninsk, and others. After completing my bachelor’s degree, I decided it was time — and chose St. Petersburg. The city attracted me with its culture, theaters, and museums. And the Polytechnic University became my choice because of its centuries-old traditions — after all, the university is already 126 years old!

— What were your first impressions of St. Petersburg and the Polytechnic?

— The first impression was that it was very cold! I come from a bright, sunny country, and the climate adaptation was difficult. But I still remember walking along Nevsky Prospect and being amazed by the architecture of your city! At first, I studied for a year at the preparatory faculty — I studied Russian. It was a very interesting process. Before coming, I studied Russian for about a year in Bolivia, but only at the basic level. The preparatory faculty helped a lot. It was also incredibly interesting for me to study basic subjects, such as physics and mathematics, in another language. Spanish is my native language, and Russian is very far from it. I was even surprised at how effective the Russian language is, in my opinion, for science. We speak a lot in Spanish, and in Russian, it seems to me, the rules are more logical. So scientific phenomena or concepts are explained more effectively, with fewer words.

— You graduated with honors — that’s a huge achievement! What was the hardest thing at the beginning of your studies?

— It was difficult for two main reasons. Firstly, knowledge of the language. Russian is considered one of the most difficult languages. After the preparatory faculty, it was still difficult for me to understand all the teachers at once. Over time, I managed to master the language. Secondly, there is a big difference in the education systems. It was difficult for me to adapt, because everything is different here. If we talk about the engineering industry, then the Polytechnic University has a very practical approach to solving problems.

— What is your specialization at the Institute of Energy?

— My area of expertise is electric power engineering. I deliberately chose this broad area because of its versatility and the presence of various specializations. After studying possible development paths, I decided on the areas closest to me: energy ecology, autonomous systems, and renewable energy sources.

— How did you organize your time for effective study? Were there any special methods?

— The main thing is that I was not afraid to ask any questions to the teachers. They were always ready to help! I had a huge interest in deepening my knowledge, and they constantly supported me. The second important aspect is that studying Russian never stopped. I was always interested, asked questions to my Russian classmates, who eventually became my friends. They were also always ready to help.

— Were there any difficulties in communicating with Russian students?

— Of course, there were difficulties at first. But from the very first days, people came up to me, asked where I was from, asked about Latin America — what we have, what we don’t. That’s how the first contacts were made. And by the end of my master’s degree, I proudly realized that I had written my thesis in another language! It was a real challenge that required persistence and determination. There were moments of despair when I wanted to give up everything, but I knew that I had to go towards my goal.

— What were the biggest non-academic difficulties you encountered in Russia? Climate, food, everyday life, mentality?

— First of all, the climate! I arrived at the end of September. I am still surprised that this city has two faces — winter and summer, it is interesting, but difficult. Secondly, a bit of a mentality. We, Latin Americans, are not as straightforward as Russians. It was hard for me to get used to the fact that in Russia everything goes very quickly, straight to the point. And everything changes constantly. Even the weather! In my city, Bolivia, there are practically no seasons. Here you need to constantly change clothes depending on the season. But it was a very interesting adaptation process.

— What did you like most about St. Petersburg?

— You can find everything here! It was the capital of the Russian Empire. I see old buildings and feel like I am in the 19th century! I went to theaters, museums — there is always something new and interesting here.

— Have you been to other cities in Russia?

— Yes, I visited Murmansk, Moscow and Bryansk. The contrast with St. Petersburg is striking. Moscow lives at an accelerated pace. However, the unique atmosphere of St. Petersburg turned out to be closer to me. Despite all the modernity of Moscow, I realized: this is not my city. St. Petersburg, which has become my home, wins in terms of sensations. Murmansk is remembered for its harsh climate and the special mentality of its residents: the long winter seems to foster mutual assistance. I was amazed by the views of the Arctic Ocean and the tundra – a completely different nature. Polar day and night – an experience that is difficult to comprehend, but incredibly impressive.

— How have you changed during your studies at the Polytechnic?

— Polytechnic changed me both as a professional and as a person. Thanks to the teachers, I did not just gain knowledge — I immersed myself in the world of modern technologies and methods of electric power engineering, which I had only heard about before. Now, holding a diploma in my hands, I feel that this is not just a piece of paper, but confirmation that I have become a real engineer. And life in Russia has taught me much more than textbooks. The St. Petersburg weather and all the difficulties have made me stronger in spirit, taught me patience and incredible persistence. Now I know that to achieve a goal, you need not only a head, but also character.

— If you knew then, on the first day of school, what you know now, what advice would you give yourself?

— The advice is simple. Communicate with the locals as intensively as possible from the first day. This is the shortest and most effective way to understand the cultural code, mentality and real "rules of the game" in studying and life in Russia. Knowledge of these nuances — from informal traditions to approaches to solving problems — turned out to be no less important than academic skills.

— What was the most unexpected or even shocking experience in life and studies?

— The education system is what surprised me the most! Here in Bolivia, a bachelor's degree is a base, a foundation without specialization. You become a specialist only in master's degree, choosing that one and only focus. Here, everything is different. You choose a specialization already in the bachelor's degree! Master's degree is the next level. Can you imagine my surprise? It was not easy to adapt! In lectures, teachers sometimes started from the middle — as if we all skipped the first six chapters of the textbook and should immediately understand the seventh.

— What are your plans after graduate school?

— I hope that I can become a teacher, either in my home country or in another country. I really like doing science, ever since school. I would like to combine my studies with work here in Russia during my postgraduate studies. Your country gave me the opportunity to study, and I would like to try my hand here. We'll see.

— Do you think that a Polytechnic diploma will give you an advantage when applying for a job, whether in Bolivia or another country?

– Yes, definitely! Especially in Asia and Latin America. Employers value those who studied in Russia because they know that you have a very practical approach and methods in engineering. In Latin America, they know about St. Petersburg and the Polytechnic University well. A diploma from this university shows that a person has received deep practical knowledge and is able to solve any engineering problems.

— What is the main piece of advice or advice you would give to a future foreign student entering the Polytechnic?

— Believe in yourself and be persistent. Entering and studying in another country is a challenge. Your confidence and persistence will help you overcome any difficulties. Learn Russian — this is the key. Without the language, it will be difficult to study, communicate, make friends. Be interested in the culture. Don’t be afraid of “seriousness”. Russian people may seem serious and straightforward. But! My experience has shown that there is a real “Russian soul” behind this! They are reliable and always ready to help. The most important thing is to be open, curious and don’t be afraid of new things. Studying at the Polytechnic is a chance not only to get an excellent education, but also to experience an amazing adventure that will change you.

August 1 is the birthday of the Leningrad Region. In honor of this event, the regional leadership organized a ceremonial presentation of state and regional awards to citizens and organizations that actively contribute to the development of the territory.

The Polytechnic University summed up the results of the competition “Best Teacher in the Eyes of Students-2025”

At the initiative of the student community, the Polytechnic University traditionally held the “Best Teacher through the Eyes of Students” competition from June 5 to July 12.

The competition has been held at the university since 2021 and this year it celebrated a small anniversary – five years. As usual, students nominate teachers for participation in the competition who, from their point of view, best meet such approved criteria as "Personal interest in the subject", "Openness to everything new", "Pedagogical excellence", "Culture of interaction with students", "Commitment to the traditions of the Polytechnic University", etc. However, this year, only graduating students who received their diplomas this year could vote for teachers. For each of the nine criteria of the competitive selection, the students had to nominate only one teacher.

"Our university is changing, and the rules for the "Best Teacher in the Eyes of Students" competition are changing along with it," explained SPbPU Vice-Rector for Educational Activities Lyudmila Pankova. "In this anniversary year for the competition, it was important for us to find out which teachers remain in the hearts of graduates leaving the university on their way to a new, big life."

Perhaps the most important change in the rules of the competition was that student voting was transferred to the Telegram bot "Digital Pelican" of the Trade Union of Students of SPbPU.

"We think it is important that our students have taken responsibility not only for developing the evaluation criteria for the competition, but also for its implementation," noted Elena Zima, Director of the Education Quality Center. "This significant step in improving the competition procedure will increase the university students' confidence in the competition results and their involvement, which will undoubtedly contribute to improving the overall culture of education quality at the Polytechnic."

494 Polytechnic graduates took part in the voting. The winners and prize winners were 10 teachers from seven institutes: GI, IBSiB, IKNK, IPMEiT, IFiM, IFKSiT, IE. All of them will receive cash prizes. The results of the competition are also taken into account in the rating of the faculty. The award ceremony for teachers will traditionally take place on Knowledge Day, September 1.

The team of the Scientific and Educational Center "Digital Engineering of the Main Equipment of Chemical-Engineering Systems" of the Advanced Engineering School of Peter the Great St. Petersburg Polytechnic University "Digital Engineering" successfully completed the development and received a patent for an ignition device for reactors of oil and gas processing plants.

Patent for invention RU 2842893 C1 was registered by the Federal Service for Intellectual Property on July 3, 2025.

Leading industry research centers and strategic industrial partners of SPbPU have shown significant interest in the development. The partners of the invention were JSC TsKBM (part of the State Corporation Rosatom), LLC NTC Gazconsulting, and the Federal Research Center of Chemical Physics named after N. N. A critical production problem is to ensure reliable ignition of burner devices of complex process equipment, for example, an autothermal reforming reactor, during its start-up. Unsuccessful ignition can lead to the formation of explosive concentrations of a flammable mixture in subsequent elements of the process chain. This, in turn, can provoke uncontrolled exothermic reactions and, as a consequence, emergency situations with potential damage to equipment and personnel. The developed product provides a radical solution to the problem, guaranteeing stable and reliable ignition, – said the responsible executor of the development, an expert of the Scientific and Educational Center "Digital Engineering of the Main Equipment of Chemical-Engineering Systems" of the St. Petersburg Polytechnical School Yuri Aristovich.

The ignition device is a structurally and functionally unified device – a complex technical system in which all components are interconnected and jointly implement the function of igniting the combustible mixture. The device contains a housing, an oxidizer supply pipe and a combustible gas supply pipe, a spark plug, valves of the oxidizer supply pipe and the combustible gas supply pipe, an outlet pipe. The housing contains a cylindrical mixing chamber, the inputs of the oxidizer supply pipe and the combustible gas supply pipe are located in the part of the mixing chamber that is most distant from the outlet pipe.

The oxidizer feed pipe is connected to the housing so as to feed the oxidizer in the tangential direction, and the combustible gas feed pipe is connected so as to feed the combustible gas in the radial direction. The inlet openings of the pipes in the housing are made so as to ensure critical gas outflow. The dimensions of the inlet openings are reasonably selected so that when the back pressure changes, the flow rates of the combustible gas and oxidizer change proportionally, the diameter of the outlet pipe is from 10 to 50% of the diameter of the mixing chamber. The technical result is an increase in the reliability of the device.

The ignition device is designed to operate in a short-pulse mode. This ensures reliable ignition at low thermal loads in a wide range of pressures (from 1 to several tens of atmospheres). The device forms and directs small volumes of flame – fire ellipses of a certain size and at a given speed. Ignition charges ensure reliable ignition of the main burner, minimizing the thermal load on the outflow zone and the ignition device body, which significantly simplifies the reactor design and its startup procedure.

The task of developing an igniter within the established deadlines seemed extremely difficult. Initially, it was assumed that the system would be implemented with a developed cooling infrastructure and multi-component thermal protection, which is due to the extremely high operating temperatures that significantly exceed the parameters of standard devices. The specifics of the reactor excluded the possibility of using serial solutions. Alternative options were considered, including the use of pyrotechnic cartridges, but this approach was recognized as suboptimal in terms of manufacturability and operational safety. As a result, an original, reliable and safe igniter was created that meets all the requirements. The developed device demonstrates high potential for use not only within the framework of this project, but also in other industries that require reliable systems for initiating processes in high temperatures and aggressive environments, added Nikolay Vasiliev, Chief Designer for Remotely Controlled and Transport and Technological Equipment at JSC TsKBM.

Chief designer for the key scientific and technological development area of SPbPU "Systemic Digital Engineering", director of the Advanced Engineering School of SPbPU "Digital Engineering" Alexey Borovkov spoke about the key success factor: "At the beginning of the work, none of the authors of the development could foresee the final result of creating a science-intensive and high-tech product. By combining the knowledge, experience and competencies of scientists, engineers and designers from various fields of knowledge and industries, we managed to form a unique multidisciplinary team and obtain impressive results. Of course, this is a logical result of the application of systemic digital engineering technologies, including the technology of developing digital twins, mathematical and computer modeling of non-stationary nonlinear physical-mechanical and physical-chemical processes of the behavior of a high-tech product.

The development of a complex technical system is based on the effective application of the created multidisciplinary digital model [ 1, 2, 3 ], which is a system of interconnected mathematical and computer models describing combustion kinetics, chemical thermodynamics of free-radical reactions, dynamics of vortex flows at supercritical parameters of substances and non-stationary nonlinear thermomechanics. Numerous digital (virtual) tests and the necessary full-scale tests made it possible to carry out verification [ 1, 2 ] and validation [1, 2] developed models, to raise the level adequacy of models and descriptions of complex processes confirmed the efficiency and reliability of the developed high-tech product.

With the help of approaches, technologies and methods of system digital engineering, the formed innovative scientific and technical groundwork and on the basis of the digital platform for the development and application of digital twins CML-Bench® [ 1, 2 ] our team implemented all stages of creating a finished industrial product in record time: development and design took only 2 months, manufacturing and testing – 3 months. It is fundamentally important to note that traditional approaches are not capable of ensuring such a high speed of implementation of science-intensive and high-tech projects for the development of complex technical systems."

In conclusion, we note that the results of the development of the ignition device have made a significant contribution to the formation of a scientific and technological reserve for the creation digital (virtual) testing ground for burner devices. The development of a digital test site is one of the most important final goals of a large-scale project to develop new generation burner devices for pyrolysis furnaces, implemented within the framework of the key scientific and technological direction (KNTD-1) of the development of SPbPU "Systemic Digital Engineering" within the framework of the "Priority-2030" program.

The project within the framework of KNTN-1 provides for the definition of approaches to mathematical and computer modeling of new burner devices, development matrices requirements, target indicators and resource constraints, creation of a series of computer models of the prototype (primary, refined, detailed, optimized), conducting full-scale tests of a pilot industrial model of a burner device for validations computer model, development of design documentation and implementation into production.

Let us recall that in June 2025, specialists from the Scientific and Educational Center “Digital Engineering of the Main Equipment of Chemical-Engineering Systems” of the SPbPU PISh presented This project and the Center’s expertise in developing burner devices at the Gazprom Neft site, one of the leaders in the oil and gas industry and petrochemical industry in Russia.

Methodological support and the process of registering the right to the intellectual property object of the igniter were provided by Center for Transfer and Import Substitution of Advanced Digital and Manufacturing Technologies SPbPU.

Ten-Year-Old Django: Polytechnic Students Celebrate Anniversary Work Season

Delegations from China's top universities visited Polytechnic University

Peter the Great St. Petersburg Polytechnic University recently hosted delegations from top Chinese universities: Tsinghua University (20th place in the QS ranking), Zhejiang University (49th place in QS), and Peking University (13th place in QS).

Study visits to prestigious partner universities in foreign countries are a mandatory element of the educational program at Chinese universities. That is why every summer students from China come to the Polytechnic University to develop scientific and educational cooperation and exchange best practices in working with young people.

The introduction to the history and infrastructure of SPbPU began with a tour of the Main Academic Building (White Hall, library, portrait gallery) and the SPbPU History Museum. The key point was a visit to the Youth Trajectory Center in the Polytech Tower — a modern space for student life, project activities, and interaction with industry. At a meeting with Ivan Khlamov, Head of the SPbPU Youth Policy Department, the guests discussed options for involving young people in scientific and technical creativity, project work, developing leadership skills, and a mentoring system. Colleagues from Tsinghua presented the successful experience of their university ecosystem for supporting innovation and entrepreneurship, including the Lighthouse program, Challenge Cup and Entrepreneurship Competitions, as well as the Innovation Plus incubator, which has grown hundreds of startups with a total funding of about 5 billion rubles.

The study visit of the best students of Zhejiang University to the Polytechnic is a long-standing tradition that has been strictly observed throughout the years of strategic partnership between our universities. The envoys from the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering were led by its international coordinator Qiu Yixin.

The program included an introduction to the historical heritage of the university, a visit to the modern laboratories of the Institute of Mechanical Engineering, Materials and Transport, and a working meeting with representatives of the SPbPU International Service. The students visited the innovative laboratories of IMMiT and learned about the latest developments of research groups and young scientists of the institute.

Chinese students were presented with opportunities to study at SPbPU, in particular within the framework of additional programs, summer and winter schools. The guests highly appreciated the educational potential of the Polytechnic University, including that already implemented in partnership with Chinese universities, and expressed interest in creating a joint program in the field of mechanical engineering.

In addition to students, the representative delegation from Peking University included Dean of the College of Chemistry and Molecular Engineering Peng Hailin, Dean of the Faculty of Materials Science and Engineering Zou Ruqiang, Professor of the Faculty of Physics Wang Xinqiang, and other scientists.

The visit was eventful: the guests were divided into groups according to their scientific interests to visit specialized laboratories, where they got acquainted with the advanced research of SPbPU in the field of new materials, energy and microelectronics. Of particular interest were the developments of carbon nanomaterials, artificial intelligence for chemistry and promising catalysts. The visit ended with presentations of scientific areas of both universities.

The past visits demonstrated the mutual interest of Russian and Chinese universities in deepening cooperation, the desire to organize interaction not only between leading scientists, but also among young researchers. As noted by representatives of SPbPU, such meetings help not only to exchange best practices in education and science, but also to create a solid foundation for future joint projects, student initiatives, entrepreneurship. Particular attention was paid to student mobility, academic exchange programs, joint participation in student conferences and youth initiatives. Kirill Prigoda is our champion!

The renowned polytechnician, assistant of the Higher School of Sports Education of the Institute of Physical Culture and Sport, Kirill Prigoda became the winner of the World Aquatics Championships in Singapore. He won gold in the 4×100 m combined relay. And before that, he won silver in the individual event at the 50 m breaststroke.

The World Championships are being held in Singapore from July 11 to August 3. On July 30, Kirill Prigoda, Miron Lifintsev, Darya Klepikova and Darya Trofimova won the combined relay. Our team not only won a confident victory in the final, but also set a new world championship record – 3:37.37. This victory went down in history – before it, Russian swimmers had not won the relay at major international tournaments for 22 years! The last time our athletes won was in 2003. Then Kirill Prigoda was seven years old.

The emotions are very pleasant, because the team gave 110%. The guys are great, but the championship is not over yet. We will celebrate at the end of the competition, – said Kirill Prigoda on air at Match TV.

Let us remind you that the Russian team is performing in Singapore in a neutral status. Thus, during the swim it was forbidden to chant "Russia". This is a strict condition of the International Swimming Federation. The team was given a special guide. If we violated it, we were threatened with exclusion from the championship. And even though we did not see the Russian flag or hear our anthem at the awards ceremony, everyone in the world understood that the Russians were on the top step of the podium.

Less than an hour before the team victory, Kirill Prigoda secured the title of vice-champion in the 50-meter breaststroke. In the final swim, he showed a result of 26.62 seconds. This medal was the 11th for the Russians and the first personal award for Russian swimmers at the current championship.

Kirill Prigoda is already an eight-time world champion! He is also a four-time world championship medalist, a two-time European champion, and a silver and bronze medalist at the European Short Course Championships. He currently holds three world records.

The World Championships are ongoing, and Kirill Prigoda has a great opportunity to add to the Russian team’s medal collection.

Polytechnic students at Garage Fest Igora Drive-2025

During these hot days, an equally hot event took place at the Igora Drive circuit in the Leningrad Region — the fourth Garage Fest festival. The Polytech North Capital Motorsport (Polytech NCM) student team became one of the participants in the Formula Student competition and performed well.

There was so much to see at the festival! Four-hour endurance races, drift competitions, exhibitions of rare cars, dragsters and drag racing prototypes, as well as interesting lectures and discussions about the past, present and future of cars.

A separate topic is the international student racing car competition "Formula Student". There, our Polytech NCM team did not get lost among strong competitors from Russia, Turkey and China. The guys proved that they are real engineers and athletes, ready to fight for leadership. At all stages of the competition, they were supported by students from the Polymer association – they tried not to miss a single event of the program, filmed a report, followed the races and, of course, rooted for the Polytechnicians.

To gain access to the races, you need to overcome the stage of static disciplines. Here, Polytech NCM was at its best. The guys passed the technical inspection and presented their car to experts. As a result, the Polytechnicians became winners in the presentation of the business plan, received second place for the report on cost and production, and came in third in the disciplines "Best digital twin of a racing car" and "Protection of the structure".

Thus, the team earned the right to participate in the general race and took fourth place there. The guys were delighted to be among their own again – in the engineering community, where everyone supports each other despite the competition. Now they are set for the new season and expect to improve their result at the next Garage Fest Igora Drive.
