125 Polytechnicians Receive Grants from the Government of St. Petersburg

Translation. Region: Russian Federal

Source: Peter the Great St. Petersburg Polytechnic University –

An important disclaimer is at the bottom of this article.

In 2025, the number of Polytechnic students and postgraduates who won the grant competition of the Committee for Science and Higher Education of St. Petersburg almost doubled. Last year there were 73 of them, this year – 125.

Students will receive city government awards of 50,000 rubles, postgraduates – 100,000 rubles. The research topics cover five areas – these are projects in the field of humanities and technical sciences, medicine, natural and exact disciplines, as well as works related to culture and art.

One of the winners of the 2025 grant competition is the leading engineer of the educational research laboratory "Computational Mechanics" of the Advanced Engineering School of SPbPU "Digital Engineering", a postgraduate student of the Physics and Mechanical Institute of SPbPU Mikhail Khovaiko, who presented an innovative project to create lightweight and reliable mesh structures from polymer composites for the space and aviation industries.

"The project is based on research conducted at the Advanced Engineering School of SPbPU "Digital Engineering", as well as on the results of a series of scientific and experimental design work in the field of digital modeling and testing of composite materials," notes the author of the development. – We have not only proven the technical feasibility of using new technologies in the production of mesh structures for rocket and space technology, but also demonstrated their practical value. The implementation of such solutions will expand the use of polymer composites in high-tech mechanical engineering. Winning the competition confirms the relevance, novelty and significance of the problems solved within the framework of my dissertation research, and opens up new opportunities for its implementation: financial support will help accelerate the implementation of the development in industry, and recognition at the city level will increase interest from aerospace enterprises."

Postgraduate student Maxim Larin works as an engineer at the research laboratory "Laser and Additive Technologies" of IMMiT. He submitted a project for the competition "Development of laser cladding technology for restoration and extension of the service life of worn surfaces of large-sized equipment."

"Receiving the grant is an important step in developing my research in the field of repair laser cladding," Maxim shared. "The project is aimed at creating an effective technology for restoring and extending the service life of worn surfaces of large-sized equipment using the mobile laser cladding complex "Nomad", in the development of which I took direct part. This approach allows for restoration directly at the site of equipment operation, reducing downtime and increasing the efficiency of repair work."

A graduate student of the Institute of Power Engineering, Evgeny Chesnokov, won the competition with his project “Development of a methodology for determining the long-term permissible current load and emergency permissible current load on cable lines with temperature monitoring.”

"The project is dedicated to calculating long-term permissible current loads for medium and high voltage cable lines," said Evgeny. "The calculation methodology provided in the project helps optimize the operation of the cable network and effectively transmit electricity to the end user. In addition to the long-term permissible current load, the methodology allows calculating the emergency permissible current load, which makes it possible to effectively redistribute the load without harming the cable insulation. Based on the results of the project, two organizational standards were developed for PJSC Rosseti Lenenergo."

Andrey Shirokih, a graduate of the Institute of Power Engineering and an engineer at the Higher School of Power Engineering, presented a project for the competition entitled “Development of scientific and technical foundations for creating a digital twin of an aircraft engine and its control system.”

"I am glad that the project was noted, victories in such competitions motivate us to work and develop further," says Andrey. "In my opinion, digital twins are the basis for the future of aviation, a topic that needs to be developed as much as possible. I must say that the project I am working on would not have happened without the support of the Polytechnic University and the contribution of my colleagues. In many ways, the work is aimed at forming the material and technical base of the twin technology – these are experimental stands. Tests on such stands will allow us to work out the methods for creating digital twins, verify and validate the mathematical models embedded in them. Science cannot exist without an experiment, so I am doing experiments in a team of like-minded people. I hope that the results of my work will become one of the building blocks of a reliable foundation for domestic aircraft engine manufacturing."

By the way, read a long interview with Andrey Shirokih in the next issues of the project "Persona".

Margarita Yanchevskaya moved to the 2nd year of the IPMEiT master's program this year. She submitted her work "A multifactorial study of the transformation of applicants' perception of higher education institutions taking into account rating indicators" to the competition.

“The idea for the project arose from my observation of how complicated and multifaceted the process of choosing a university has become for modern applicants,” said Margarita. “They take into account many factors — from the availability of the required specialty and employment prospects to the opinion of parents and the atmosphere at the university. In recent years, the influence of subjective assessments on the perception of the quality of education has especially increased. I was interested in how these subjective factors interact with other criteria, whether ratings affect applicants’ priorities, and how applicants integrate this information into their selection system. The study showed that choosing a university for modern applicants is a multifactorial process. They evaluate universities based not only on academic indicators, but also on social factors. For successful positioning of a university, it is important to find a balance between these two aspects. Moreover, it is necessary to take into account the specifics of each university and the characteristics of applicants in different fields of study. These findings will enable us to develop more effective and targeted information strategies that take into account the wide range of factors that influence important life choices for each applicant.”

Graduate of the ISI Master's program "Digital Construction of Buildings and Structures" Prokhor Yakovlev In the project "Parametric modeling of design solutions for a hyperboloid structure", he developed a method for optimizing steel rod structures based on the criterion of minimizing metal consumption. A distinctive feature of the method is the automatic collection of climatic loads, as well as the use of an evolutionary algorithm to find an effective design solution. In his work, Prokhor implemented the method on a steel hyperboloid frame of a lighthouse structure. As a result of the study, optimal parameters of a hyperboloid structure based on the criterion of minimizing metal consumption were determined, with a reduction in the total mass by 4.5 times from the original version. Verification of the calculations was carried out by setting up the export of the calculation scheme in the LIRA-SAPR PC. An approach to detailing the design model using the automatic formation of typical nodes is also proposed, which significantly reduces costs. As Prokhor notes, the developed algorithms are universal and can be projected onto similar rod spatial structures.

Some of the guys have won KNVSh grants before. For example, Igor Repin, a postgraduate student at IE, who presented the project “Improving the energy efficiency of thermal power plants in St. Petersburg using energy-saving technologies.”

"I participated in the St. Petersburg grant competition for the second time, and won for the second time," Igor said. "Both works were related to the topic of the future dissertation and were based on the master's thesis. In the projects, I proposed modern methods for increasing the efficiency of power plants using heat pumps. The first victory gave me confidence, so I decided to participate this year. Over the year, I have added achievements and experience, there was no doubt that I would win this time! I am very happy about this, my birthday is coming up – I gave myself a great gift!"

An important disclaimer is at the bottom of this article.

The Academic Council of SPbPU adopted the Regulation on the personalized scholarships of the Physics and Mechanics Institute. Starting from the 2025/2026 academic year, the best Physics and Mechanics Master's students will start receiving personalized scholarships based on the results of the competition, named after outstanding professors who worked at the Physics and Mechanics Faculty of the Polytechnic University. The scholarships will be paid from the income from the management of the target capital "Development of scientific, educational, youth and educational projects of Physics and Mechanics".

"Last year, thanks to the activity of graduates and employees, a target capital was formed at PhysMech," said Nikolai Ivanov, Acting Director of the Physics and Mechanics Institute. "It is gratifying that, by decision of the Institute's Academic Council, the first project to which the income from the target capital will be directed is personal scholarships for master's students. The scholarships will allow us to reward the brightest students who are starting their path in science. Involvement in scientific research is one of the cornerstones of the "PhysMech system," created by outstanding scientists and organizers of higher education, after whom the scholarships are named."

A total of five scholarships have been established – one for students in each of the five Master's degree programs.

Students of the master's program in the field of "Mechanics and Mathematical Modeling" will be awarded a scholarship named after Ivan Vsevolodovich Meshchersky.

I. V. Meshchersky (1859–1935) was a Russian scientist and mechanic, the founder of the mechanics of variable mass systems. When the St. Petersburg Polytechnic Institute opened, he was invited to the position of professor of the theoretical mechanics department and played a decisive role in the development of this discipline. It was Ivan Meshchersky’s lecture on theoretical mechanics for students of all technical departments that became the first lecture given at the newly opened Polytechnic Institute. Meshchersky was one of those scientists who sought to bring the teaching of mechanics closer to the needs of engineering practice; he created the classic “Collection of Problems in Theoretical Mechanics” and introduced practical classes for students to solve problems. In 1907–1908, he served as director of the St. Petersburg Polytechnic Institute.

Students of the Master's program in the field of "Applied Mathematics and Physics" will be awarded a scholarship named after Lev Gerasimovich Loitsyansky.

L. G. Loitsyansky (1900–1991) was a Soviet scientist and mechanic, the founder and first head of the Department of Hydroaerodynamics at the Faculty of Physics and Mathematics (1935–1975), and a leading specialist in boundary layer and turbulence theory. He began his teaching career in 1922 as an assistant to Professor A. A. Friedman at the Department of Theoretical Mechanics. L. G. Loitsyansky is the author of fundamental monographs and textbooks on hydrogasdynamics and theoretical mechanics. L. G. Loitsyansky’s textbook “Mechanics of Liquids and Gases” is still a reference book for both undergraduate and graduate students, as well as specialists in hydroaerodynamics. The scientific school of physical mechanics of liquids and gases created by Lev Gerasimovich is one of the leading schools in the country and is supported and developed at SPbPU by his students and the students of his students.

Master's students in the Applied Mechanics program will be awarded a scholarship named after Anatoly Isakovich Lurye.

A. I. Lurye (1901–1980) was a Soviet scientist and mechanic, Corresponding Member of the USSR Academy of Sciences, and the author of fundamental works on theoretical and analytical mechanics, oscillation theory, operational calculus and automatic control theory, shell theory, and linear and nonlinear elasticity theory. The textbook on theoretical mechanics, which he co-authored with his colleague and friend L. G. Loitsyansky, was used by more than one generation of students. From 1944 to 1977, A. I. Lurye headed the Department of Dynamics and Strength of Machines at the Faculty of Physics and Mathematics (since 1960, the Department of Mechanics and Control Processes). A unique scientific team was formed around Anatoly Isakovich, which is still commonly called the “Lurye school”. The works of A. I. Lurye’s students occupy a significant place in Russian mechanics and are known throughout the world.

Master's students majoring in Physics will be awarded a scholarship named after Boris Pavlovich Konstantinov.

B. P. Konstantinov (1910–1969) was a Soviet physicist and academician of the USSR Academy of Sciences. His scientific interests were extremely broad: he published works on acoustics, physical chemistry, isotope physics, plasma physics and the problem of controlled thermonuclear fusion, and astrophysics. As head of a laboratory at the Physicotechnical Institute (now named after A. F. Ioffe), from 1947 Boris Pavlovich worked part-time at the Leningrad Polytechnic Institute, headed the department of technical physics, and then organized several departments at the FMP: experimental nuclear physics, isotope physics, and biophysics. On his initiative, a specialization in astrophysics was opened at the LPI. B. P. Konstantinov was the director of the A. F. Ioffe Physicotechnical Institute (1957–1967) and dean of the Faculty of Physics and Mathematics (1964–1966).

Students of the Master's program in the field of "Applied Mathematics and Computer Science" will be awarded a scholarship named after Vladimir Aleksandrovich Troitsky.

V. A. Troitsky (1927–2004) was a graduate of Anatoly Isakovich Lurye's school, the organizer and first head of the Department of Computational Mathematics of the Faculty of Physics and Mechanics (in 1989 the department was named Applied Mathematics), and the Dean of the Faculty of Physics and Mechanics (1966–1973). V. A. Troitsky studied the theory of optimal processes, with an emphasis on the development and application of analytical and numerical methods for solving problems of optimizing mechanical systems. Under the supervision of Professor Troitsky, the department conducted scientific research in the field of developing numerical methods for solving various problems in mechanics.

Personal scholarships of PhysMech will be awarded each semester on a competitive basis to master's students who have demonstrated high achievements in academic and research activities. The scholarship amount in the 2025/2026 academic year will be 6,000 rubles per month. The competition will be held in the first ten days of September. During the summer language and cultural camp, foreign students of our university went on an excursion to Peterhof, the famous residence of Russian emperors and one of the most impressive palace and park ensembles in the world. Students from nine countries took part in the trip: India, Zambia, Burundi, Kenya, Ethiopia, Angola, Guinea-Bissau, Cameroon and Cambodia.

From the first minutes of visiting the Grand Peterhof Palace, the students were immersed in the era of luxury and grandeur of the Russian Empire. They saw the state rooms decorated with gold, crystal and paintings, and also learned about the lives of the Russian tsars.

After the tour of the palace, the students went to explore the famous parks of Peterhof. In the Upper Garden, they were greeted by well-kept alleys and symmetrical fountains, and in the Lower Park, a stunning view of the Gulf of Finland and the Chess Mountain cascade. The culmination was the legendary Samson fountain, symbolizing Russia's victory in the Northern War.

But the real surprise for the participants were the famous Peterhof joke fountains! Unprepared for such a fun challenge, the students all fell under the streams of water secretly beating from under the ground. Everyone got wet, but this only added to the laughter and joy.

With friends and our teacher Elizaveta, we went on an amazing excursion to Peterhof! It was my first encounter with this amazing place. It exceeded all expectations. Our guide took us around the palace and told us its history so fascinatingly that time flew by. I really enjoyed it — the excursion was truly interesting and memorable! — shared Dos Santos Pereira Danilson from Guinea-Bissau.

This trip is not just an excursion, but part of a larger summer camp program, where students study Russian, participate in master classes, and get acquainted with Russian culture. The university continues to organize such events, strengthening international ties and creating opportunities for intercultural dialogue.

"Point of Support" of the Polytechnic University: Psychological Support in a Modern University

Translation. Region: Russian Federal

Source: Peter the Great St. Petersburg Polytechnic University –

An important disclaimer is at the bottom of this article.

Lost in the stream of problems? Don't know who to turn to for help? We answer: Politekhnicheskaya Street 29, lit. O (Polytech Tower). The SPbPU "Tochka Opory" Psychological Support Center (PSC) operates here. A team of psychologists works to ensure that you can always get support in a difficult situation.

Why do universities need psychologists?

Firstly, it is supposed to be that way. In 2022, the Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation and the Russian Academy of Education developed a concept for developing a network of psychological services in universities. According to the departments' recommendations, psychologists should carry out educational, psychocorrectional, diagnostic and advisory work with all participants in the educational process. Psychological and social well-being is part of the youth policy in the country and, in particular, in universities.

Secondly, life inside the university is not a vacuum, there are enough tense situations, challenges and problems. Some students have difficulties with adaptation, some are overly nervous before exams, somewhere there are conflicts in the team, someone has difficulty making decisions, and there are also overloads from combining work and study, and much more.

Finally, psychology is becoming more accessible through self-help books and materials, and the demand for them is growing.

What questions do people ask the Center’s psychologists?

"Tochka Opory" has been operating for three and a half years now within the structure of the Polytechnic Youth Policy Department. Its audience is students, employees and teachers, approximately 40-50 thousand people.

In 2024, the Center's psychologists conducted 931 individual consultations. In just over half of 2025, specialists have already conducted more than 670 consultations. The Center notes that the overwhelming majority (97%) of those who applied are students and postgraduates, while employees and teachers make up about 3%.

What worries people the most?

Relationships with others — 37%. Polytechnic students most often come to psychologists to sort out their relationships with partners, parents, and to establish communication with peers, friends, or work colleagues. A large number of social groups and regular contacts are inevitable in the university environment (and in life), which is why the ability to build relationships is a necessary skill for every person.

Anxiety and fears — 26%. The Center's specialists note experiences due to loneliness, changes, illnesses, studies, personal development and much more. Working with these difficulties is not the easiest and fastest process, but the result significantly increases overall well-being. To help those who have applied, the Center's specialists use elements of cognitive behavioral therapy: consultative work involves working through states, thoughts and feelings both at a meeting with a specialist and in the form of homework and practices.

Self-esteem and self-confidence – 12%.

In 2025, issues of emotional state and stress, personal identity and relationships, and studies occupied men and women approximately equally. At the same time, men addressed questions on “Productivity and self-management” three times more often, while women with exactly the same proportion prevailed in the category “Psychological trauma, loss, grief”. However, psychologists perceive these facts with caution.

In fact, although men and women have a number of unique features, they are in many ways equally susceptible to common crisis situations and experiences. It is possible to talk about the specificity of appeals depending on gender with a number of reservations, since such conclusions require a more thorough analysis, – says psychologist of the TsPS "Tochka Opory" Andrey Kuzmin.

Psychologists remind us that difficulties and experiences are a natural part of our lives, they can occur in anyone and at any age, regardless of status, gender and other characteristics. If you are unable to cope with the difficulties on your own, it makes sense to contact a specialist who will be able to clarify the causes, alleviate the symptoms and work out new behavior patterns together with you. If the difficulties go beyond the scope of psychological practice, then experts will recommend seeking help from specialized specialists: cardiologists, neurologists, psychotherapists and psychiatrists.

Not just consultations

If you think that a psychologist's work is limited to the walls of a consultation room, you will be only partly right. In addition, our specialists conduct discussion clubs, support groups, thematic trainings and much more.

Individual consultations are an opportunity to support a person during an acute period or to start a process of fundamental changes, starting a targeted work from the deepest layers of the psyche. However, at a certain point, it makes sense to supplement such work with group formats, in which a person learns to see himself from the outside, practices interaction skills and plays out different situations in a safe environment, says Daria Popova, a psychologist at the TsPS Tochka Opory.

In addition, psychologists participate in university events. For example, on May 17 in the Polytechnic Park during the family festival "Beauty-day" The Center's staff held a "Plasticine Date" class for parents and children.

Recently, we have noted a growing interest in art therapy practices. For example, the event “Plasticine Date” has become a successful format for joint creativity of children and parents. In addition, I managed to open a workshop on neurographics – this is a space where participants can reveal their emotions and experiences through drawings, abstractions and free lines, – shared Veronika Sudakova, a psychologist at the TsPS “Tochka Opory”.

The Center's specialists are also experimenting with new types of activities. This year, psychologist Anastasia Markevich launched the online marathon "Anxiety under control" on the Telegram channel for the first time.

"This is a unique opportunity to bring useful self-help practices to a wider audience," said Anastasia. "The idea was to share practical developments on the topic of growing anxiety in a remote format. We have not had such a practice before and, judging by the coverage and feedback from the participants, we successfully managed to implement such a mini-project, which I am very happy about!"

In the same format, in August, psychologist Daria Popova launched a 24-day online intensive course “Fight Back from Stress” with elements of gamification.

The Center's psychologists regularly improve their qualifications and attend specialized events, such as the All-Russian conference "Personnel work and labor protection in scientific and educational organizations of higher education", the All-Russian seminar-meeting of psychologists of educational organizations of the higher education system.

In 2025, the employees of the CPS became members of the St. Petersburg Psychological Society (SPbPO) and received membership cards at the Faculty of Psychology of St. Petersburg State University. Membership provides an opportunity to participate in events to keep abreast of current trends in psychological science and practice, have affiliation and the status of a specialist.

Communication with representatives of psychological services of other universities is also part of the activities of the Center's employees: this summer, the Polytechnic University hosted a supervision for psychologists from St. Petersburg universities, during which the Center's employees, together with their colleagues, discussed the most difficult therapeutic cases and shared their experiences.

Attending conferences, supporting the specialized community and sharing experiences with colleagues are extremely important for us, since the work of a psychologist implies regular contact with the difficult states of those who seek help. At events and meetings, we can discuss our practice, debate, learn new things and spend time in the company of like-minded people, restoring our own resources, – notes Anna Filimonova, a psychologist at the TsPS "Tochka Opory".

The Center’s specialists are currently planning to search for new ideas in working with different groups of applicants.

During the existence of our service, we have accumulated rich experience in consulting and working with various categories of requests. Having started with a small team of psychologists, by now the Center has developed into a full-fledged team of specialists and has all the necessary resources to provide support to everyone who feels the need for it. Our mission is to promote the well-being of our beloved Polytechnic University and the entire society as a whole, – says Anna Kalugina, Director of the Center for Social Support "Tochka Opory".
