July was a busy month for the military-historical club "Nash Polytech", which took part in several significant events. A special place in the series of events was occupied by a unique exhibition at the Concern "Sea Underwater Weapons – Gidropribor" and festivals.

The Marine Underwater Weapons — Gidropribor Concern is hosting the exhibition Torpedo Plant No. 181 in the Blockade and at the Front. The SPbPU search team found the weapon last year at the site of fierce battles of the 3rd Frunze Division. Today, the restored PPD-40 is not just a museum exhibit, but a living testimony to the courage and fortitude of the defenders of the Motherland. During the exhibition, it literally returned to its origins. Thanks to the efforts of enthusiasts and searchers, the weapon that saw the most difficult moments of military history has found a new life and a worthy place in the exhibition dedicated to the feat of the torpedo plant workers during the Great Patriotic War, said Marina Gladkova, Deputy Director of the VIK "Our Polytech".

This month, activists of the VIC "Our Polytech" took part in the festival "Password – Victory", which took place at the Narva Gate. Visitors to the event visited the headquarters of the command of the Great Patriotic War, got acquainted with Soviet weapons, visited a tent camp and a medical exhibition, and tested their accuracy in a pneumatic shooting range.

The main event of July was the club's participation in the large-scale military-historical festival "Ostrovsky Line" in the Pskov Region. It was a real memory marathon, uniting more than a thousand spectators. In one day, the students performed in three reconstructions at once. They recreated the heroic defense of the Ostrovsky fortified area in the summer of 1941, the actions of partisan detachments behind enemy lines, and the breakthrough of the powerful defensive line "Panther" in 1944. The T-40 tank restored by the club activists was very popular. It was here, at the "Ostrovsky Line", that the exhibit debuted a year ago. Since then, the vehicle has become an integral part of large reconstructions.

SPbPU received a grant to create an engineering center

Peter the Great St. Petersburg Polytechnic University has won the competitive selection of the Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation for the creation of an engineering center for new materials, welding and additive technologies for low-tonnage production of high-tech products in power engineering.

Funding will be provided from the federal budget of the Russian Federation within the framework of the program to support the renewal of the material and technical base of organizations carrying out scientific research and development.

Polytechnic University is confidently among the top 10 leaders among Russian universities in terms of the volume of applied scientific research and development. Today, the university ecosystem includes more than 70 research and scientific production laboratories and more than 30 scientific and educational centers in cooperation with industrial partners. Among the most important resources, one can highlight the additive technology center, the supercomputer center, academic and commercial licenses for world-class software and modern engineering equipment. The creation of the engineering center will contribute to the consolidation of Polytechnic University's competencies by attracting qualified researchers and engineering and technical personnel, and the combination of existing and purchased scientific and production equipment will allow providing a wide range of engineering services to the real sector of the economy.

The engineering center will be created on the basis of the Institute of Mechanical Engineering, Materials and Transport of SPbPU. Director of IMMiT and project manager Anatoly Popovich noted that the main tasks of the center will be the provision of engineering and research services, the implementation of experimental design and technological work on orders from industrial partners, as well as the formation of a portfolio of orders in the "single window" mode and their implementation to ensure a full technological chain with the real sector of the economy.

This victory is a recognition of the university's potential and an incentive to implement advanced solutions in the country's priority sectors. We are confident that the project will help bring our research and engineering base to a new level and provide a foundation for further technological achievements, commented Yuri Fomin, Vice-Rector for Research at SPbPU.

The project will be implemented between 2025 and 2028, with total funding amounting to 250 million roubles.

Navy and Polytechnic: an inseparable link

Russian Navy Day is celebrated on the last Sunday of July, and each time these are different dates. But in 2025, we have the opportunity to congratulate the sailors on the day established by the founder of the Russian fleet, Emperor Peter the Great, after whom the Polytechnic University is named. During Peter's reign, it was on July 27 that they honored the sailors in memory of the great victories of the Russian fleet at Cape Gangut in 1714 and Grengam Island in 1720. The creation of the fleet was one of Peter's main achievements. The first ships were built in Voronezh. And on December 1, 1699, Peter approved the St. Andrew's naval flag. Peter not only created the Russian navy, but also laid the foundation for engineering in the country. Years later, the St. Petersburg Polytechnic Institute became a prominent representative of engineering education. One of the first departments opened there was shipbuilding. It was headed by a talented engineer Konstantin Boklevsky.

In 1930, the shipbuilding faculty was transformed into the Leningrad Shipbuilding Institute, which became the ancestor of the St. Petersburg State Marine Technical University, the famous Korabelka.

Strong ties with the Navy have always been an important part of Polytechnic University's activities – from the creation of the first submarines to marine robotics today. A special place in the life of the university is occupied by friendship with the crew of the heavy nuclear missile cruiser Pyotr Velikiy – the flagship of the Northern Fleet. Launch from Vostochny: Russian scientists receive a new tool for studying the ionosphere

On July 25, at 08:54 Moscow time, the Soyuz-2.1b launch vehicle with the Fregat upper stage was launched from the Vostochny Cosmodrome, which delivered two heliogeophysical spacecraft Ionosfera-M No. 3 and No. 4, as well as a group of 18 small space satellites, to their calculated orbits.

The launch of the Ionosfera-M series satellites completed the formation of a group of four devices of the Ionozond space complex, which will monitor the geophysical environment to conduct fundamental scientific research and solve applied problems.

The complex was created in the interests of the Russian Academy of Sciences and the Federal Service of Russia for Hydrometeorology and Environmental Monitoring. The Ionosfera-M satellites are designed for a comprehensive study of the upper layers of the Earth's atmosphere. They will observe various physical processes in the ionosphere, including natural and man-made impacts, changes in electromagnetic fields, atmospheric composition, and ozone distribution. The data obtained will be used by Roshydromet in combination with ground-based observations. The Russian Academy of Sciences plans to conduct ground-space experiments to study the ionosphere's response to natural phenomena such as hurricanes and volcanic eruptions.

Also, 18 small satellites have been launched into orbit. Nine of them were created by Geoscan and will be engaged in photographing the Earth, tracking the movement of ships and aircraft, exploring near space and much more. Some of the devices are intended for educational purposes.

Ivan Bortnik, Advisor to the General Director of the Foundation for Assistance to Innovations, highly appreciated the significance of today's launch: "This is a great achievement for Roscosmos – the completion of the formation of the Ionosfera-M satellite group for research by our scientists, representatives of fundamental science. Also in this launch are many devices from private satellite-building companies. One of the devices from the Geoscan company is included inSpace Pi project, this is important for the Innovation Promotion Fund and for the Polytechnic University as the founder and leader of the project. This is the first of a series of satellites with which schoolchildren will be able to hunt for supernovae. We, as the Innovation Promotion Fund, held a competition and determined the winners who will begin to manufacture such devices; I hope that they will fly next year."

According to Ivan Bortnik, the nanosatellite "239Alferov" of the Presidential Physics and Mathematics Lyceum No. 239 and the Lyceum "Physics and Technology School named after Zh. I. Alferov" will open a new direction of the Space Pi project – the launch of target devices. This is the first of a series of satellites equipped with X-ray sensors that will hunt for supernovae. Polytech and the Young Industrialists Club in St. Petersburg strengthen technological partnership

Modular Cities in the Arctic: Polytech Creates New Standards of Comfortable Housing

The Polytechnic University has taken on a serious project — the Institute of Civil Engineering of SPbPU is thinking about how to build quickly and efficiently in the Arctic. A research group led by associate professors of the Higher School of Design and Architecture of the Institute of Civil Engineering Elena Ladik and Maria Drebezgova is developing a concept for modular structures that can be quickly assembled in the harsh conditions of the Arctic. New Horizons of Solutions: From Theory to Practice of Risk Management

The Polytechnic University solemnly awarded the winners and prize-winners of the All-Russian student case championship "Risk Management: New Horizons for Solutions". The case championship was attended by 56 students from St. Petersburg, Moscow, Yekaterinburg, Voronezh and Tambov. The participants presented projects combining digital technologies, risk management methods and models, as well as forecasting tools in an uncertain environment.

The first place winner was the PonITech SPbPU team: Diana Yakimenko, Maria Belova, Maria Platonova and Vitaly Trofimov.

The second place was taken by the Ratio team from the Peoples' Friendship University of Russia named after Patrice Lumumba: Daria Dreval, Larisa Ordina, Elizaveta Kostyaeva and Veronika Vatrukhina.

The third place went to the “Risk Hunters” – Valentina Fedorova, Anastasia Rusakova, Arina Katrina, Egor Bogdanov and Liana Pogosyan from SPbSUT.

The admissions campaign at Peter the Great St. Petersburg Polytechnic University is in full swing, and its first stage is coming to an end. On July 25 at 12:00 Moscow time, the deadline for accepting documents for the bachelor's and specialist's programs of full-time budgetary education ends. Applicants have only one day left to submit an application and finally decide on their future profession.

More than half a century in energy. Polytechnic says goodbye to Valery Lebedev

On July 23, Deputy Director of the Institute of Nuclear Energy (branch) of SPbPU in Sosnovy Bor, former director of the Leningrad NPP Valery Ivanovich Lebedev passed away. He devoted more than 54 years to the cause of his life, nuclear energy.

Valery Ivanovich was born on November 3, 1947 in the city of Teikovo, Ivanovo Region. In 1971, he graduated from the Ivanovo Power Engineering Institute, specializing in "Automation of Thermal Power Processes" and was assigned to the Leningrad Nuclear Power Plant in Sosnovy Bor. At first, he worked as an engineer of control and measuring instruments and automation, then became a senior engineer of the Skala information system, a senior repairman of the Skala IVS, head of the thermal automation and measurements shop, and chief engineer of the station. And in 1996, he headed the Leningrad NPP.

Under the leadership of Valery Lebedev, the enterprise underwent large-scale modernization, many safety systems were improved and created, and for the first time in the industry, the service life of RBMK power units No. 1 and 2 was successfully extended. Valery Ivanovich actively supported cooperation with the World Association of Nuclear Operators (WANO), the IAEA and other international organizations on issues of reconstruction and improving the safety level of the Leningrad Nuclear Power Plant.

In 1998, V. I. Lebedev received the academic degree of candidate of technical sciences, and in 1999 – doctor. Since 2000, he worked as a professor of the department of "Nuclear and thermal power plants" of the power engineering faculty of the St. Petersburg State Polytechnical University, passing on his professional experience and knowledge to new generations of power engineers.

After 14 years of managing the Leningrad NPP, Valery Lebedev moved to work at the Institute of Nuclear Energy (branch) of SPbPU in Sosnovy Bor, where he was its director until 2018, then deputy.

V. I. Lebedev is the author of three scientific discoveries, 80 inventions, five monographs and over 150 scientific articles. He was a full member of the International Academy of Sciences of Ecology, Human and Nature Safety (MANEB), a full member of the Academy of Inventions and Discoveries, a full member of the International Academy of Informatization, vice-president of the Baltic Academy of Informatization, a member of the dissertation doctoral council of the All-Russian Research and Design Institute of Power Technologies (VNIPIET).

Valery Ivanovich is a laureate of the Russian Government Prize, and for his work and scientific achievements he was awarded the Order of Glory to Russia, the 1st degree honorary badge of the Russian Academy of Natural Sciences, the Peter I, P. L. Kapitsa, N. K. Roerich medals of the Manastino Institute of Nuclear Biology and Ethnography "For Contribution to Ecology", and the departmental badge "Veteran of Nuclear Power and Industry".

The passing of Valery Ivanovich Lebedev was a great loss for the scientific school of St. Petersburg and the Leningrad region, for Russian energy, and a huge loss for his family and friends.
