The International Summer School of Restoration is taking place at SPbGASU, which is being held jointly with the International Restoration Center and the Restoration Association (Rosregionrestavratsiya). It is attended by 12 students from Greece, Kazakhstan, Kazan and St. Petersburg. They are working on a historical heritage site and the concept of preserving and developing the historical territory of the unique wooden Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

The current church is located in the village of Listvenka, Boksitogorsk District, Leningrad Region, and is a cultural heritage site of federal significance. It is one of the oldest church buildings in Leningrad Region – it was built in 1599 and rebuilt in 1720.

As the head of the summer school of restoration, candidate of architecture, associate professor of the department of architectural and urban heritage, head of the project "Scientific and educational laboratory "Restoration and renovation of architectural heritage" (NOL) Nadezhda Akulova said, the participants of the summer school talked with the rector of the Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, visited the nearby surroundings and immersed themselves in the history of the area, learned about the place where, according to the rector, "Moscow and St. Petersburg are connected." Thus, they were deeply immersed not only in the object, but also in important historical zones, feeling their special atmosphere.

In addition to SPbGASU, the school’s organizers and leaders also include the Director of the International Restoration Center Tatyana Chernyaeva and the Head of the Department for the Restoration of Cultural Heritage Sites of the Leningrad Region State Autonomous Cultural Institution “International Restoration Center” Tatyana Afanasyeva.

The defense of the projects is planned for July 24 at the International Restoration Center in the village of Rozhdestveno.

SPbGASU has proven that the aesthetics of solid waste facilities increases their efficiency

Valeria Supranovich, Arina Safronova

SPbGASU has proven that the aesthetics of a solid municipal waste (MSW) handling facility increases its energy efficiency, energy conservation and environmental friendliness throughout its entire service life.

During her five-year research, Valeria Supranovich, PhD in Architecture and Associate Professor of the Department of Architectural Design at SPbGASU, identified a number of possible high-quality architectural solutions that, in conjunction with technological systems for self-sufficiency of buildings and facade elements, will allow them to organically fit into the urban system. The Associate Professor also developed ways to integrate additional public functions into these objects at various economic costs. All this will allow the implementation of sustainable development goals in the architecture of solid waste management facilities. Valeria Supranovich completed this research work, “Methods of Functional Planning Organization of Solid Waste Management Facilities in Russia,” within the framework of the grant of scientific and pedagogical workers of SPbGASU 2025.

Since March 2024, amendments to Federal Law No. 451 "On Production and Consumption Waste" have come into force, which have completely updated the waste management system and the regulatory process in terms of extended responsibility of the manufacturer of goods. Moreover, within the framework of the programs of the XXIV International Forum "Ecology of the Big City" and the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum, held in St. Petersburg in 2025, agreements were signed to finance projects for the construction of waste disposal facilities, the creation of the necessary infrastructure to reduce the percentage of waste disposal and the country's transition to a "closed loop" economy (a production and consumption model that involves reuse, recovery and recycling of existing materials and products for as long as possible) to achieve the goals of sustainable development of the country. This is a powerful impetus for the active implementation of solid waste management facilities in the existing urban system.

"Today, approaches to the design of solid waste facilities and the facilities themselves do not meet the goals of sustainable development, as they are considered economically inexpedient. However, in the course of scientific research conducted from 2020 to 2025, I was able to identify the opportunity to revise the existing methods of project activities. One example of waste management facilities that meet the goals of sustainable development is the world's largest W2E plant "Shenzhen Energy Ring" (Shenzhen, China). The new plant is designed to process 5,000 tons of waste per day and simultaneously produce 600 million kilowatt-hours per year. The facility has a round shape, uncharacteristic for manufacturing enterprises, to combine all production units into a single structure and simultaneously reduce the area of the plant, includes zones for the formation and popularization of waste disposal procedures, and photovoltaic panels are provided for on the roof. The architecture of the facility is not utilitarian, it corresponds to the context of the environment," explained Valeria Supranovich.

In the course of the current scientific research, she studied the theoretical components of the concept of "sustainable architecture" and proposed a system of their interaction. It was established that the aesthetic qualities of the object allow not only to humanize the appearance of the enterprise, but also to ensure high energy efficiency, environmental friendliness and energy saving of the building throughout the expected service life. The goals of sustainable development in the architecture of waste management facilities should be implemented taking into account their typological affiliation, Valeria Supranovich clarified.

Some theoretical results of this study were implemented in her diploma work “Technopark complex with waste processing function, Saint Petersburg, Yuntolovo district” by Arina Safronova, a graduate of the master’s program of the Department of Architectural Design of SPbGASU (supervisor – Valeria Supranovich).

Chairperson of the Council of Young Scientists of SPbGASU Alexandra Glukhova, head of the student scientific society of the construction faculty Ksenia Ivanyuzhenko and student of the faculty of forensic examinations and law in construction and transport Kirill Besedin took part in the XIII Congress of councils of young scientists and student scientific societies "From the depths of traditions – to the heights of technology", which was held from July 2 to 5 in Ufa.

This year, the congress was the largest in its history. Its main objective was to involve young people in the development of science to ensure Russia's technological leadership. Numerous sessions, divided into blocks, provided an opportunity to adopt experience and directly ask questions of interest to leading representatives of the business community, science and the state. The sessions were held in various formats: reports, master classes, panel discussions, round tables.

"I especially remember the panel discussion "How to become a rector?" and the round table of the industry community "Construction and architecture". There were many opportunities to prove yourself at the congress: to participate in sessions, in special stations from partners, in the evening program, which helped to establish useful connections. I received a powerful boost of motivation: when you get into an environment of like-minded people, where everyone's eyes light up from what they do, it is impossible to remain indifferent," noted Ksenia Ivanyuzhenko.

"During the congress, we managed to attend many lectures, round tables, scientific discussions and other events dedicated to issues of scientific career, interaction between science and business, grant support for young scientists, advanced information technologies. In addition, a great program of informal events was organized, as a result of which we were able to meet and communicate with outstanding figures of modern science, establish friendly relations with representatives of student scientific societies of Moscow State University, the Academy under the President of the Russian Federation, the Customs Academy, which, I hope, will become the necessary foundation for organizing inter-university scientific events," said Kirill Besedin.

"An important milestone of the congress was the creation of the industry community "Construction and Architecture", which included representatives of such specialized universities as the Nizhny Novgorod State University of Architecture and Civil Engineering, Moscow State University of Civil Engineering, Tomsk State University of Architecture and Civil Engineering, Penza State University of Architecture and Civil Engineering, Moscow Architectural Institute and others. In the round table format, we discussed the problems of organizing scientific activity within our areas and outlined ways to combine efforts in promoting research by young scientists, holding joint events and exchanging experience.

I managed to talk with the Chairman of the Coordinating Council for Youth Affairs in the Scientific and Educational Spheres of the Council under the President of the Russian Federation for Science and Education, Nikita Marchenkov, and discuss issues of participation of representatives of the Construction and Architecture community in the sessions of the Congress of Young Scientists,” said Alexandra Glukhova.

The Department of Construction Materials Technology and Metrology has developed methods to improve the fire safety of concrete

Translation. Region: Russian Federal

An important disclaimer is at the bottom of this article.

Associate Professor of the Department of Construction Materials Technology and Metrology Dmitry Panteleev completed the research work "Crack resistance of dispersion-reinforced concrete after high-temperature heating" as part of the grant competition for the implementation of research work by scientific and pedagogical workers of SPbGASU in 2025.

Every year in Russia there are many fires in buildings and structures. Their number can be reduced by increasing the requirements for the structural safety of buildings. For this, when designing, in addition to calculating the load-bearing structure for strength, it is also necessary to carry out a fire resistance calculation to guarantee the preservation of the load-bearing capacity in fire conditions for a specified time.

In case of fire, high fire resistance of building structures is a guarantee not only of the structural integrity of the building, but also of the safety of people. After the fire starts to affect the structure, concrete can explode, breaking off from the heated surface in plates. Pieces of peeling concrete fly off with a bang to a distance of up to 10 m.

During the research, fibre-reinforced concrete compositions were designed and manufactured, followed by determination of their properties after exposure to high-temperature heating.

It was found that the use of steel fiber can increase the crack resistance and fracture toughness of concrete structures, thereby making them safer in the event of a fire, while the use of synthetic microfiber helps to avoid explosive destruction.

As a result of the research, effective versions of fiber concrete were developed using high-modulus steel and low-modulus synthetic fibers to obtain highly fire-resistant concrete, to increase their technical and economic efficiency, reliability and operational safety of building and structure structures.
