Student design bureaus: a breeding ground for engineering personnel

The Polytechnic University held an intensive educational course "Student Design Bureaus as a Tool for Preparing Highly Motivated and Conscious Engineers" for employees of industrial partner companies. Participants discussed how design bureaus help students master real engineering tasks.

The goal of the intensive course is to introduce representatives of enterprises to the capabilities of SKB, demonstrate examples of successful projects and discuss prospects for joint work on developing the country's engineering potential. Organizers are representatives of SKB "System Engineering". The project became the winner in April 2025 competition of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of the Russian Federation in the direction of "Student Design Leadership"Several design bureaus and engineering teams of the Polytechnic University are participating in its implementation.

"To achieve technological leadership by 2030, we must involve young people in solving real engineering problems today, at the training stage. Student design bureaus allow not only to develop skills, but also to form the right professional motivation and awareness in students," noted Oleg Rozhdestvensky, head of the SPbPU Office of Technological Leadership, on the basis of which the project is being implemented.

Head of SKB "System Engineering", Director of the Higher School of Power Engineering Alena Aleshina emphasized that SPbPU SKB is built as a multi-level ecosystem: school KBs – youth KBs – student KBs – employer. This allows us to identify talented children at early stages, support their training and involve them in project activities.

The participants of the intensive course discussed the development trajectories of student design bureaus at universities, their goals and objectives, as well as the role of an industrial partner in this system. Special attention was paid to how to establish cooperation between an enterprise and SKB SPbPU, how student projects help solve specific problems under the guidance of curators representing companies, and ensure an influx of qualified personnel. The experts also shared examples of successfully implemented projects.

The presentation session presented the areas of work of SKB "System Engineering", starting with school design bureaus and ending with the best practices of interaction between industry and the university.

The project to create a network of school design bureaus is a joint initiative of the Government of St. Petersburg and the Advanced Engineering School "Digital Engineering" of SPbPU (PISH CI). Director of the Center for Continuing Professional Education of PISH CI Sergey Salkutsan said that SHKB is a network of engineering creativity clubs based in schools. Students in grades 8–11, under the guidance of instructors, master engineering skills, work with modern software and solve real problems of industrial companies. The goal is early career guidance for schoolchildren, development of practical competencies and training of future qualified personnel for the industry.

In the X-Lab Engineering Creativity Laboratory, students learn to combine knowledge from different disciplines when solving practical problems. Senior research fellow at PISh CI Mikhail Zhmailo spoke about the project workshop, which is part of the educational program and combines design, engineering, digital manufacturing, project management, and teamwork.

Head of the engineering team Polytech Voltage Machine, engineer of the Higher School of Transport IMMiT SPbPU Vsevolod Gaiduk introduced the intensive participants to the team that develops robotic platforms for high cross-country ability and ground electric transport. Polytechnicians create solutions for people with disabilities and for firefighting.

Arseniy Klyuev, Senior Lecturer at the Higher School of Power Engineering, spoke in more detail about the SKB Power Machines — Polytech. This is a unique educational cluster focused on training personnel for the Power Machines company. The end-to-end training trajectory begins with the school's engineering classes and continues through youth and student design bureaus, bachelor's and master's programs. Senior students are involved in real engineering projects implemented in the interests of the company under the guidance of curators — specialists with experience in implementing R&D from the university and employees of the enterprise. The success of the project is ensured by coordination between the university and the company, effective infrastructure, a motivation system and corporate culture.

Director of the Higher School of High-Voltage Power Engineering Viktor Belko showed the structure of the Electrical Machines department within the SKB Power Machines — Polytech. For example, the Electrical Insulation Laboratory trains personnel in the context of growing demand for domestic technologies. The main goal is to involve students in research activities from their first years to accumulate practical experience in the field of electrical insulation and electrical machines, which cannot be fully ensured within the framework of traditional educational standards. The center, based on successful experience in fulfilling contracts in the field of electrical engineering and an established research base, interacts with industrial partners and forms flexible teams of students under the supervision of specialists from the university and companies.

Of particular interest was the practical case of interaction between the Power Machines company and students, starting from the second year, in terms of participation in the educational program. Leading project manager Alexandra Grigorieva presented the areas of work and the results of interaction with SPbPU within the framework of the Power Machines Trajectory, which formed the basis for the advanced training of junior students for further participation in the Power Machines – Polytech SKB. Students gain the opportunity to receive a scholarship, master a working profession and find employment.

The seminar participants visited the laboratories and workspaces of the SKB "System Engineering" teams and saw the students' developments. Including a racing car and a solar car of the Polytech North Capital Motorsport engineering racing team, the results of the work of X-Lab and SKB "Unmanned Aviation Systems", as well as a fire robot of the Polytech Voltage Machine team.

A working meeting was held at Peter the Great St. Petersburg Polytechnic University between SPbPU Rector Andrey Rudskoy, the Minister of Science, Higher Education and Technological Development of the Arkhangelsk Region Alexey Aksenov and the Acting Rector of the Northern (Arctic) Federal University named after M.V. Lomonosov Mikhail Danilov.

The main topic of discussion was the creation of the "Competence Center for the Application of Laser Welding and Additive Technologies in Shipbuilding". The initiative is aimed at developing joint scientific research, accelerating the implementation of innovative technologies and strengthening the country's technological sovereignty in key industries.

Today, we are betting on the development of advanced technologies in the field of materials science, laser and additive processes, digital engineering – those areas that are already determining the appearance of the industry of the future. Cooperation with colleagues from the Arctic region opens up new horizons: we combine fundamental science, engineering schools and real production tasks. I am confident that this synergy will become the basis for comprehensive solutions that can change the infrastructure of the North and become an example for other regions of the country," Andrey Rudskoy emphasized.

It is worth noting that over the course of three years of close cooperation with the Scientific and Educational Center "Russian Arctic" of NArFU, specialists of the Scientific and Research Laboratory "Laser and Additive Technologies" of IMMiT SPbPU have completed several projects on direct laser growth and laser welding of thin metals. Now the polytechnicians are faced with the task of developing a technology for hybrid laser-arc welding of samples with a blunting thickness of at least 30 mm. In the future, joint interests include the creation of a technological complex and the introduction of laser technologies into the production of city-forming enterprises.

At the meeting, the guests voiced a proposal to create a center, discussed the levels of interaction and upcoming stages of joint work.

"For the Arkhangelsk Region, the development of advanced production technologies capable of ensuring reliable and efficient operation in the conditions of the North and the Arctic is especially important. Joint scientific projects and the creation of a competence center are a step towards a real technological breakthrough. We are counting on practical results and are ready for systematic work on the implementation of new solutions in shipbuilding and related industries," noted Alexey Aksenov.

During the visit, a tour of the university campus and research laboratories of the Institute of Mechanical Engineering, Materials and Transport of SPbPU took place. The guests examined the equipment of the Laser and Additive Technologies Research Laboratory in most detail. They were interested in the robotic technological complexes and exhibits manufactured as part of joint projects with the Russian Arctic Research and Education Center of NArFU.

"In recent years, within the framework of cooperation with the Scientific and Educational Center "Russian Arctic" of NArFU, we have successfully implemented several projects using direct laser growth and laser welding technologies. We see great interest in laser technologies from the Arctic region and are confident that the next stage of cooperation will allow us to move from pilot solutions to large-scale integration of technologies into production," said Mikhail Kuznetsov, Director of the Russian-German Center for Laser Technologies.

Alexey Aksenov and Mikhail Danilov showed keen interest in the scientific developments of the Polytechnic University and expressed readiness for further cooperation. Following the meeting, a decision was made to hold a series of working meetings for a more detailed discussion of the project.

The visit of the delegation from the Arkhangelsk region became an important step towards strengthening interregional scientific and technical cooperation. SPbPU and NArFU intend to develop a strategic partnership aimed at the technological development of the shipbuilding industry and the Arctic region.

Polytechnics beyond the Arctic Circle: Gazprom invited students to an operating fuel production facility for the first time

The 3rd Meeting of Gazprom's target students took place in the shift settlement of Yamburg (YaNAO). It was attended by 150 students from the company's specialized universities from all over the country. The meeting was held for the first time at an operating gas production facility.

The program of the meeting included lectures on the development of gas production at the Kara Sea shelf fields, trainings, team-building events and a team case championship. The students saw Gazprom production facilities at the Yamburg oil and gas condensate field, visited social and household facilities of the rotational village, and got acquainted with the culture and traditions of the indigenous peoples of the North.

Two students from the Institute of Power Engineering, in the Electrical Power Engineering and Electrical Engineering program, participated in the meeting from the Polytechnic University: Leonid Golubev (3rd year bachelor's degree student) and Vladimir Sergeev (1st year master's degree student), target students of Gazprom Transgaz Saint Petersburg.

"The gathering included interesting training sessions on soft skills development. It was interesting to solve cases, learn new things, improve communication and teamwork skills. The organizers also tried to fill the program with excursions, events "at the edge of the earth". This gathering will be remembered for the knowledge acquired, friends and emotions," Vladimir shared.

"Surrounded by one and a half hundred talented students from all over Russia, I solved current problems of developing new deposits. All this together helped me to start believing in myself more, not to be afraid to move forward, to learn to look for new non-standard solutions," Leonid said.

Polytechnic employees also participated in the event as experts on the case championship jury: Elvira Tuktamysheva, Head of the Employment Assistance Sector, and Janis Olekhnovich, Curator of the “PAO Gazprom Flagship University” project.

"Immersion in the corporate culture, production and business processes of the company shows students their immediate future after graduation," Elvira Tuktamysheva noted. "Thanks to this, the likelihood of stress during the transition from studying at a university to working in a company is reduced. Such a system helps the guys more easily adapt to a new stage in their professional career."

Polytechnic University develops cooperation with the Union of Restorers of St. Petersburg

The ceremonial signing of a cooperation agreement between the St. Petersburg Polytechnic University and the Union of Restorers of St. Petersburg took place in the House of the Restorer (House of the Department of Appanages).

development of an integrated professional retraining program "Reconstruction and Restoration of Buildings" with the assignment of an additional qualification "Architect-Restorator", which will be aimed at specialists wishing to expand their competencies in the field of preserving historical and cultural heritage; topics for students' group final qualifying works; planning a joint project for the digitalization of cultural heritage sites, which will be implemented in partnership with colleagues from Cuba.

In addition, a tour of the historical mansion of I. V. Pashkov was organized for the Polytechnic delegation.

St. Petersburg is traditionally considered the capital of architectural masterpieces that represent not only historical but also cultural value on a global scale. Preservation of these unique objects is a priority task that requires the involvement of highly qualified specialists. In this regard, we have initiated strategic cooperation with the Union of Restorers. Joint efforts are aimed at developing and implementing programs for additional professional education aimed at training personnel in the field of restoration and preservation of cultural heritage sites. Integration of education and production: SPbPU students defended their final work at Power Machines

Students of the Institute of Industrial Management, Economics and Trade of SPbPU defended a comprehensive final qualification work in the format of "Final Qualification Work as a Project" to solve real production and management problems of the customer – JSC "Power Machines".

Three students majoring in Management, International Logistics, divided the tasks among themselves as follows: Darya Snigireva considered the issues of developing fast purchases through the implementation and adaptation of marketplaces, and Maria Shapova dealt with illiquid assets: working with unloading, organizing unscheduled inventories, creating a pricing system. Both girls were advised by Nikita Lukashevich, Associate Professor of the Higher School of Industrial Management. Yana Salangina took on the transformation of the enterprise's warehouse accounting and the development of recommendations for improving the management of the warehouse complex (consultant – Zoya Simakova, Associate Professor of the Higher School of Industrial Management).

The main task of the student of the "Trade" direction, profile "Logistics systems in trade", Ekaterina Rakcheeva was to develop a procurement training system and fill the "Knowledge Base" of the enterprise. Ekaterina was advised by Associate Professor of the Higher School of Service and Trade Irina Kapustina. The overall assessment of the effectiveness of the developed activities was made by a student of the "Economics" direction, profile "Economics and management at the enterprise", Anna Myasnikova (consultant – Professor of the Higher School of Engineering and Economics Svetlana Suloeva). The project was supervised by Senior Lecturer of the Higher School of Industrial Management, the ideologist of the implementation of the complex final qualifying work on the part of the Polytechnic University Egor Temirgaliev.

The meeting of the State Examination Committee was held on the premises of the Leningrad Metal Plant of JSC Power Machines. The State Examination Committee was headed by the Director for Development of General Industrial Suppliers of Power Machines, Evgeniya Khmel. The SEC also included representatives of the customer and the university.

The result of the students' work was a set of measures that optimize production and management processes at the enterprise. In particular, recommendations for improving the purchasing activities of Power Machines through the implementation of an industrial marketplace make it possible to reduce the duration of the purchasing process. The proposed automation of contractual activities through the development of a template for filling out a contract reduces the time of the purchasing manager. Due to the developed recommendations for improving warehouse operations through the implementation of barcoding, as well as the implementation of an automated warehouse complex management system, the time for performing warehouse operations is reduced, the accuracy of accounting and the throughput of the warehouse are increased.

During the defense, the members of the State Examination Commission asked many questions, touching on their areas of professional interest. As a result, the commission rated the work as excellent.

After the results were announced, the chairperson of the State Examination Commission, Evgeniya Khmel, summed up the defense: On the customer's side, we make fairly high demands on students both during the pre-graduation internship and writing of the work, and during the defense itself. It is very important for us that the tasks that we set for students at the beginning of their journey find application in our business after the defense of the diploma. I can say that the team did a great job!

This is already the third project successfully implemented by IPMET students for Power Machines. Last year, the Polytechnicians defended a comprehensive final qualifying work commissioned by Power Machines – Leningrad Metal Plant on the topic of transforming the purchasing activities of an industrial enterprise in order to reduce slow-turnover inventories, and in 2023 worked on the project "Harmonization of production needs with the provision of components and materials" by order of "Power Machines" – the "Elektrosila" plant.

We attach great importance to the preparation of comprehensive final qualification works created by order of industrial enterprises of St. Petersburg. In this way, we solve a dual task: on the one hand, we help the enterprise to take a new look at production and management processes, on the other hand, we prepare young qualified specialists for our strategic partner, the Power Machines company, who, while still students, successfully completed pre-graduation practice, then wrote a diploma work and, most importantly, became employees of this enterprise, – commented the director of IPMEiT Vladimir Shchepinin.
