166 years since the birth of Anton Chekhov

Anton Pavlovich is a classic of world literature, a writer, and playwright with a medical education. He wrote over 300 works during his lifetime.

Childhood and youth in Taganrog

Chekhov was born in Taganrog into a large merchant family. From childhood, he was accustomed to hard work: he sang in the church choir, studied diligently, helped his father in the grocery store, and even learned to be a tailor. His parents instilled in him not only a hard work ethic but also other important qualities: compassion, respect for people, and a love of nature. While still in high school, he began writing his first short stories and sketches under the pseudonym "Chekhonte," given to him by one of his teachers.

After his family moved to Moscow in 1876, 16-year-old Anton remained alone in Taganrog. To support himself, he tutored and wrote essays. He sent short sketches of Taganrog life, such as "The Stammerer," to his brothers in Moscow. His first play, "Fatherlessness," was also published around that time. It explored spiritual crisis and the loss of moral compass.

The beginning of the journey in Moscow

In 1879, Chekhov moved to Moscow, where he took on the responsibility of caring for his family, living on the modest income from his literary publications. This year proved to be a landmark one for him:

His debut in print: the short story "Letter to a Learned Neighbor" and the humorous piece "What is Most Common in Novels, Stories, etc." His university entrance exams: He enrolled in the medical faculty of Moscow University (now Sechenov University).

While still a student, Chekhov began his medical practice, working as a district doctor and later as the head of a hospital in Zvenigorod.

The development of a writer and mature work

In 1884, Chekhov's first book, "Tales of Melpomene," was published, followed by the well-known collections "Motley Stories" (1886), "In the Twilight" (1887), and "Gloomy People" (1890). In the late 1880s, he actively worked for the theater, creating the plays "Ivanov," "The Wood Goblin," and "The Wedding," as well as the famous vaudevilles "The Bear" and "The Anniversary." Seeking inspiration and new experiences, Chekhov traveled extensively, visiting Nizhny Novgorod, Sakhalin, Yasnaya Polyana, and Western Europe.

In 1892, the writer moved to the Melikhovo estate near Moscow. Here, he actively helped people: as a doctor, he treated peasants, built schools, traveled to areas ravaged by famine, and participated in the general census. It was in Melikhovo that his most famous works were created: the play "The Seagull," the novella "Ward No. 6," and the short stories "The House with a Mezzanine" and "The Man in a Case."

Recent years and recognition

Chekhov spent his last years in Yalta, where he worked on the play The Cherry Orchard and received numerous guests, including Maxim Gorky, Ivan Bunin, and Leo Tolstoy, who called Chekhov "an incomparable artist of life" and "Pushkin in prose."

Chekhov's contemporaries and descendants highly valued him as an innovator. They noted his unique talent for revealing the profound psychology of his characters through everyday details, while the laconicism and radiant humanism of his prose elevated realism to the level of philosophical generalization. He is rightly considered a master whose work enriched not only Russian but also world literature.

Anton Pavlovich Chekhov's work remains relevant because it speaks not of events, but of the eternal: the fragility of the human soul, the search for meaning in everyday life, and the courage to live despite the imperfections of the world. This makes him not just a classic, but our insightful contemporary.

Interim results and preparations for the admissions campaign: what was discussed at the SUM Academic Council

Translation. Region: Russian Federation –

An important disclaimer is at the bottom of this article.

On January 28, the State University of Management's Academic Council held its regular meeting. The main items on the agenda were the preliminary results of the two institutes' work for 2025 and plans for 2026.

As usual, the program began with congratulatory remarks. The rector presented letters of gratitude from the Ministry of Science and Higher Education for their assistance in organizing and implementing the "Conductors of Meaning. DNA of Russia" program to the head of the university's press service, Tatyana Sharapova, and press service staff members, Kătălin Grigoriev and Galina Yalysheva. He also congratulated the birthday celebrants of the month.

The meeting was opened by Gennady Azoev, Director of the Institute of Marketing, who presented preliminary results of the Institute's planned performance indicators for 2025 and development prospects for 2026.

"This admissions campaign has successfully enrolled groups across all programs, with the vast majority of students on a contractual basis. In addition, our institute implements network programs with several universities and hosts the Hi-Tech Breakthrough tournament and the Brand Education competition, which are consistently popular, especially among international students," said Gennady Azoev.

The Institute's Director, Fyodor Myshko, reported on the results of its work for 2023-2025.

"Our institute has been steadily enrolling students year after year, and the number of contract students is growing. We have plans to further improve these numbers. In addition to those admitted during the summer, students are transferring throughout the year. I would like to note the increase in the number of our students' publications, including in the Higher Attestation Commission (HAC) system, which is particularly valuable. We understand that higher education needs young professionals, and we are preparing a new generation," shared Fyodor Myshko.

After hearing the reports, Vladimir Stroyev noted that this year will be indicative for many programs, institutes, and universities.

"The higher education system continues to change. We all eagerly await the target figures for fee-based admissions, which are now regulated by the Ministry of Education and Science. At the same time, it is already known that the number of fee-based places in a number of our programs will be reduced nationwide. It is important to adapt to these changes while remaining true to our core mission as a state university—not only the first management university in the country, but also a leader in engineering and economics education, which we continue to actively revive today," Vladimir Stroyev emphasized.

The Academic Council also considered issues related to assigning staff to departments for the preparation of PhD dissertations, assigning endorsement ratings to academic publications, providing discounts on tuition, and other work-related matters.

The rector of the State University of Management took part in a discussion of the role of KVN in educating young people at the forum "KVN – School of Leaders"

On January 27, as part of the International KVN Team Festival "KiViN-2026," the Plenary Session of the 5th All-Russian Forum "KVN – School of Leaders" was held, co-organized by the State University of Management.

The discussion was attended by Deputy Minister of Science and Higher Education Andrey Omelchuk, Rector of the State University of Management Vladimir Stroyev, General Director of the TTO "AMiK" Alexander Maslyakov, as well as heads of leading universities and federal youth projects.

The central theme of the meeting was systemic cooperation between the government, universities, and creative industries. During the discussion, KVN was presented not simply as a creative outlet, but as an effective educational tool. Experts noted that participation in the movement allows students to develop key management competencies: leadership, stress resilience, teamwork, and decision-making skills on a tight deadline.

Particular attention was paid to the results of the Methodological Center for the Study and Development of the KVN Movement (the Center), which opened at the State University of Management exactly one year ago. Since then, the Center has become a full-fledged "foothold" for universities across the country, developing a methodological foundation and helping to build high-quality youth outreach, with the State University of Management cementing its status as a flagship of this process.

In 2025, the Center held two All-Russian KVN Schools, 24 online seminars, and several large forums, reaching a total of approximately 2,500 people. Plans include further expanding educational programs for KVN leaders, strengthening interregional ties, and developing the game as a key social asset for Russian students.

Let's remember that GUU is also known for its KVN League and its teams, one of which will compete in the Major League this season.

The State University of Management and the Arab Dream Foundation will open an Arabic Language Study Center.

On January 27, an Arab delegation visited the State University of Management to conclude a cooperation agreement.

Samah Bashir Abbas, Director of the autonomous non-profit organization for the promotion of the development and dissemination of Arabic language knowledge and familiarization with Arab culture, "Arab Dream," and his deputy, Al-Moghalis Ahmed Abduljalil Mohamed, met with Dmitry Bryukhanov, Acting Rector of the State University of Management, to discuss future collaboration and opportunities for further expansion.

The meeting was also attended by Sergei Karseka, Advisor to the Rector's Office of the State University of Management, Inessa Bogatyreva, Head of the International Cooperation Department, and Konstantin Vinogradov, Head of the International Projects Implementation Department.

The Arab guests noted the importance of establishing cooperation across all areas for friendly countries today and proposed opening an Arabic Language Center at the State University of Management.

"Now is the time to support each other. We want to develop together in a wide variety of areas. We have common interests in both education and science. We are primarily interested in the possibility of establishing Arabic language centers in Russia and Russian language centers in Arab countries. We have already opened such centers in several countries, and this has been a valuable experience," said Samah Bashir Abbas.

Dmitry Bryukhanov agreed that students are eager to learn Arabic, and opening a center for its study would be an excellent start to collaboration.

"Today, Arab countries are friendly to Russia, and many avenues for cooperation between countries and specialists are opening up. Of course, it's more convenient to do this through knowledge of each other's languages. We'll start by launching a continuing professional education program and will work systematically together to open a center and implement other forms of collaboration, including network programs," Dmitry Yuryevich suggested.

The guest was also interested in the possibility of student exchanges, online and offline lectures, the implementation of a double degree program, and advanced training courses for representatives of Arab countries at the State University of Management.

Having concluded their discussions on the key aspects of opening the Arabic Language Study Center with internships in Arab countries, the parties signed a cooperation agreement and agreed to further collaboration within working groups.

To your feat, Leningrad!

Translation. Region: Russian Federation –

Source: Official website of the State –

An important disclaimer is at the bottom of this article.

Every year on January 27, we remember an important date in the history of the Great Patriotic War – the Day of the complete liberation of Leningrad from the Nazi siege.

For 872 days and nights, Leningrad was surrounded. For 872 days, the city lived at the edge of human capabilities. For 872 days – and not a single day of capitulation.

From September 8, 1941, the enemy formed a deadly ring around Leningrad. The goal was not simply to take the city, but to wipe it off the face of the earth, along with its inhabitants. Food supplies were cut, warehouses were destroyed, and the city was subjected to daily artillery shelling and air raids. Thousands of high-explosive and incendiary bombs fell on residential areas, hospitals, schools, and museums.

Hunger became the most terrible weapon

People lost strength, fell right on the streets, died in cold apartments without getting out of bed.

In the winter of 1941–1942, the daily bread ration for workers was only 250 grams, and for children and dependents, 125. This “bread” often consisted of half cake, cellulose, and impurities.

And yet Leningrad lived

But even under these conditions, Leningraders continued to go to work, produce tanks and shells, treat the wounded, and teach children.

Factories were working. Radios were playing. Shostakovich's Seventh Symphony was being performed—a musical challenge to the siege. Schools were in session. Theaters were showing productions! People shared their last crumbs of bread and supported each other, because they knew the city could not be abandoned.

Georgy Lagunov, a survivor of the siege

Georgy Viktorovich Lagunov, PhD in Economics, senior research fellow, associate professor at the Moscow Institute of Management (now the State University of Management), entered the siege as a teenager and emerged from it as an adult, aged prematurely.

He saw food for an entire city go up in flames in the Badayev warehouses—and with it, the future of thousands of people. Georgy Lagunov stood on rooftops at night under bombs and in lines during the day for 125 grams of dark, almost inedible bread. He hauled water from the Neva, warmed himself over a smokehouse, and remembered how people collapsed in the streets and never rose again.

His father died of starvation at 45. His mother went to work as a nurse to survive. But he, exhausted, still went—for water, for gruel, for bread, for life.

But most importantly, he remembered more than just death. He remembered that Leningrad hadn't surrendered. That even in hell, people didn't talk about capitulation—only about when the grain would be increased and when the siege would be broken. That mail was still running, trams were running again, gardens were being dug in the parks, and the Road of Life was being carved across the frozen Ladoga.

For the war and service, Georgy Lagunov was awarded:

Order of the Patriotic War, 2nd degree; Order of Glory, 3rd degree; Medal "For the Victory over Germany in the Great Patriotic War of 1941–1945"; Medal "For the Defense of Leningrad"; Badge "Resident of Besieged Leningrad".

Nikolai Chernyak – participant in the breakthrough and lifting of the siege of Leningrad

Nikolai Ivanovich Chernyak, PhD in Philosophy and associate professor at the Moscow Institute of Management (now the State University of Management), was not locked inside besieged Leningrad—he was the one who held the front around it.

While the city was suffocating in hunger and cold, he stood on the Volkhov swamps, under snow and fire, between Leningrad and those who wanted to strangle it.

Every German attack on the city was shattered by the soldiers he rallied to the attack—the infantry, the artillery, those who defended the embrasures with their lives. He saw Leningrad survive thanks to those who died for its walls.

In January 1943, he marched with his battalions toward the Leningrad Front—through 12 kilometers of hell to break the deadly siege. He heard the roar of guns, saw his soldiers fall, and knew that if they didn't get through, the city would starve again.

Nikolai Chernyak was awarded four orders and medals for military valor as a frontline soldier and political worker who served on the Volkhov, Leningrad, and 2nd Baltic Fronts.

On January 18, 1943, the siege was broken. Land communications with the mainland were established. And on January 27, 1944, the siege was completely lifted. That evening, victory salutes thundered over the Neva and the Field of Mars.

According to various estimates, over a million people, mostly civilians, died in the besieged city. It was one of the worst humanitarian catastrophes of World War II.

Leningrad is a Hero City. Its pain is our responsibility to remember. Its fortitude is our duty to preserve peace. We remember. We mourn. We are proud.

The State University of Management is one of the most popular universities where current deputies received their undergraduate degrees. However, only 18% of the people's representatives attended Moscow universities.

Analysts from the consulting group "Polylog" studied the diplomas of current deputies and identified the 10 most common universities they graduated from when they received their first higher education, the primary professions of the deputies according to their first diploma, and the most popular educational institutions where they continued their education.

Our university was among the most popular universities where members of parliament began their education and careers. We shared seventh place in the ranking with A. M. Gorky Ural State University (now the Ural Federal University named after the first President of Russia B. N. Yeltsin) and Chelyabinsk State University.

The most popular educational profiles among elected representatives were technical (22.7%), economics (16.7%) and legal (12%).

It's worth noting that all of these areas and more are available at the State University of Management. In 2025, our university was ranked among the top 15 best universities in Russia in public and municipal administration by RAEX.
