Let us recall that in 2024, almost 145 thousand applications were submitted for budget places in the bachelor's and specialist's degree programs at the Polytechnic University – this is 70% more than in 2023. It is too early to sum up the results of the 2025 admissions campaign, but by July 15, 108,126 applications had already been submitted for all forms of study in the bachelor's and specialist's degree programs. The largest number – 26,000 applications – were received by the Institute of Computer Science and Cybersecurity, in second place (25,000) – the Institute of Industrial Management, Economics and Trade, in third (12,000) – the Institute of Mechanical Engineering, Materials and Transport.

Among the areas of training, the most popular are “Software Engineering”, “Construction”, “Information Systems and Technologies”.

The admissions committee notes the continued high demand of applicants for all areas of the IT sphere and the growing interest in such areas of training as: "Nuclear Power Engineering and Thermal Physics", "Thermal Power Engineering and Thermal Engineering", "Automation of Technological Processes and Production", "Biotechnology".

S7 Group and Novosibirsk State University Agree on HR Partnership

S7 Group and Novosibirsk State University (NSU) have signed a cooperation agreement. The parties will join forces to train specialists in various fields: business informatics, economics and management.

For the third time, NSU hosted the scientific and educational school for students in grades 7–11, “Sigma”

"Sigma" is a free summer scientific and educational school for students in grades 7-11, which has been held for the third year at the Faculty of Information Technology NSUThis year the event took place from July 7 to 13.

The main idea of "Sigma" is from students to schoolchildren. The goal of the project is to bring schoolchildren closer to the university, providing the opportunity to freely choose courses, participate in rich discussions and interact with teachers who care about their interests, not grades.

This season, Sigma hosted 24 courses taught by 28 instructors, including students, graduates, and young researchers from various universities, such as NSU, MSU, SPbSU, HSE, Tyumen State University, MVSES, MSU Skolkovo, IPL SB RAS, as well as industry practitioners, including the Whatelse.lab marketing agency. The geography of the instructors covered the Novosibirsk Region, Krasnoyarsk, Tyumen, St. Petersburg, and Moscow.

Each course was built as a cycle of 3-6 lessons. The format — from discussions and mini-lectures to role-playing games and workshops — was determined by the teachers and adjusted to the course concept. The course topics included a wide range of disciplines, such as sociology, anatomy, cinematography, linguistics, programming, biotechnology, as well as Olympiad courses in chemistry and literature. Thus, participants could try themselves in the humanities, social sciences, natural sciences and engineering and understand which of them were of the greatest interest.

Kirill Kondrenko, a graduate of NSU and one of the permanent teachers at Sigma, shares his experience:

— I think that Sigma is a great opportunity for schoolchildren to gain practical skills and learn interesting things that are ignored in a comprehensive school. Last year I taught the course Online Security, and this year — Telebot on developing Telegram bots in Python. During the course, we studied the basic elements of building bots, and at the end, the students did group projects — among them were a guide to interesting places, a bot for recognizing text from voice messages, a bot for analyzing user emotions, and others. During the classes, the students liked the interactivity the most: it was worth changing just a couple of lines of code — and the bot's behavior in Telegram completely changed.

"Sigma" creates an atmosphere in which schoolchildren with "burning eyes" receive knowledge from students with the same sincere interest. I am convinced that it is this atmosphere that influences skills and knowledge even more than the content of the classes themselves. Every day at "Sigma" there were extracurricular activities that helped "refresh the mind" and distract from the courses for a while. In my opinion, this is exactly what is lacking in ordinary schools, where students have 7-8 lessons a day.

The Sigma organizers play no less an important role than the teachers: they set the tone for the entire school, coordinate processes and create the very atmosphere in which everything happens.

Vladimir Sharapov, a second-year student at the NSU Institute of Information Technologies and the head of Sigma from the NSU Institute of Information Technologies, says:

— Sigma was my first experience in organizing such a large-scale and long-term event. It was a truly exciting and responsible adventure. Of course, there were difficulties, but we overcame all the challenges. I am sure that everything went well — including thanks to the support and trust shown to me. Special thanks to the entire team of organizers, without whom this path would not have been possible — to those who supported me on this new path.

As mentioned above, the geography of the school's teachers was represented by different universities and regions. Tarina Iptysheva, the main organizer of Sigma, a student of SAS Tyumen State University, talks about her participation in the project:

— For me, Sigma is, first of all, about the feeling of “Peace, friendship and chewing gum!” and establishing supportive and warm relationships. And only secondly, about gaining new experience, knowledge, and getting acquainted with interesting ideas and disciplines.

I think many of the participants actually did it, at least from what they say. And that makes me incredibly happy.

And I’m also very happy when the guys say that they managed to get to know each other, become friends and find a common language – and this is probably the most valuable thing.

This year, 107 participants from the Novosibirsk region gathered at Sigma. Each could choose up to four courses and create their own educational trajectory. Upon completion of the school, the guys shared their impressions with us.

Lisa, Sigma student:

— This is my third year at the school, and I was looking forward to this season with great impatience. All my expectations were met in abundance — I am absolutely delighted with the variety of courses, the atmosphere, and, of course, the people I met or reconnected with. For me, Sigma is always about new cool acquaintances and warm meetings with old friends and new like-minded people.

I really like the idea of “from students to schoolchildren” that Sigma promotes, and that’s probably why one of the highlights of the first half of the season was Self-Government Day. I really liked the idea, and it gave me new ideas about what I’d like to do in the future.

In general, I always say that Sigma is a meaningful event of July for me. And I think the emotions and impressions I return home with after each school day are the best confirmation of this.

— Of course, the concept of Sigma as a place where you will be appreciated, where your opinion will be appreciated, where teachers respect you, is very important. Especially for teenagers who came here from a familiar school environment, often harsh and formal. To find yourself in such a comfortable place, where there is attention, respect and a sincere interest in you as a person — it’s really cool. Here, the teacher is interested in you, wants to share knowledge and is truly open to discussions.

We thank all the teachers and organizers, without whom Sigma would not have become what it is: a place of genuine interest, academic freedom and friendly interaction.

Yandex Education student camp on natural language processing has started at Novosibirsk State University

Today, the Yandex Education student camp on NLP (Natural Language Processing) started at the Novosibirsk State University. It is attended by 100 students from IT departments of universities from all over the country. In two weeks, the participants will master key approaches to text processing, as well as work with large language models BERT, GPT and YandexGPT (used for content analysis and generation) in practice. At the end of the student camp, students will defend team projects that they can add to their own portfolios. Participants will teach artificial intelligence to structure information, find contradictions in texts, search for data in complex documents where text, tables and graphs are mixed, and also improve the reasoning skills of language models.

Minister of Digital Development and Communications of the Novosibirsk Region Sergey Tsukar emphasized: The Novosibirsk Region, as the capital of IT personnel, always supports the holding of various educational events on digital topics and is happy to host IT students from all over the country.

The first week of the student camp is devoted to getting acquainted with key approaches to NLP. Participants will understand the architecture of transformers (models that use the attention mechanism for fast learning), study methods of adaptation and interpretation of models, and master the tasks of classification, generation and error tolerance. They will also study advanced technologies: attention mechanisms, autoregressive models, multimodality and RAG (Retrieval Augmented Generation). In the second week, students will focus on practice: they will work with data analysis and the final defense of a project that solves real problems at the intersection of science and industry.

Kirill Barannikov, Head of Strategic Development of Higher Education at Yandex Education, notes:

— We focus on new formats of education, and student camps are one of them. Full-time intensive programs are open to students from all over Russia. They provide not only relevant knowledge, access to big tech technologies, but also the opportunity to meet practicing industry experts and teachers from the country's strongest universities. In addition, in two weeks, participants have time to put together a full-fledged project for their portfolio and immerse themselves in a new socio-cultural environment – the city and university where the student camp is taking place. Yandex Education student camps are two-week intensive courses in mathematics, IT and artificial intelligence, which are held at leading Russian universities in a face-to-face format. Participating students come to the university for two weeks to immerse themselves in an educational program on a specific topic and create a team project for their own portfolio.

"Projects of the Future": IPMET Successfully Defended Final Qualification Theses

The Institute of Industrial Management, Economics and Trade successfully defended their final qualification works "Project as a Final Qualification Work". 21 projects were completed in a special format: nine complex and 12 group projects, in which 57 final-year students took part (48 undergraduate, nine specialist and master's students).

A group final qualifying work is a coordinated development or research carried out by a team of students united by one object and common problems. A comprehensive final qualifying work is a joint development or research carried out by a team of students within the framework of a common topic.

Since 2023, our institute has been actively and successfully implementing projects for the preparation and defense of final qualification works of bachelors, specialists and masters commissioned by industrial partners, government agencies and commercial organizations in the format of “Project as a final qualification work”. A special feature of our projects is that they are all carried out by multipotential teams consisting of students from different educational programs, and in most cases, from different fields of study. I would like to note the great interest on the part of students: they not only demonstrate qualifications in their field, but also acquire new related knowledge and skills, including in teamwork, – notes Vladimir Shchepinin, Director of IPMEIT.

In 2023, the institute completed three group final qualification works commissioned by partners: Power Machines — Leningrad Metal Plant, TGK-1, and TD-Materik. Last year, 13 project final qualification works were presented (four integrated and nine group). The list of customers, in addition to industrial enterprises, included representatives of retail and the public sector.

This year, IPMET has carried out a lot of preliminary work on interaction with potential customers and received requests for projects to be carried out by multipotential teams from more than 20 employer representatives. These are Eurostil, the Center for Competence in Tourism and Hospitality, the ASI All-Russian Accelerator for Industrial Tourism, MKT, the Krasnogvardeisky District Center for Scientific and Technical Information, the Rosfinmonitoring Regional Office for the Northwestern Federal District, and the PlaceMarket restaurant chain.

Significant contributions were made by the directors of the higher schools of IPMEiT Olga Kalinina, Dmitry Rodionov, Olga Voronova, Olga Nadezhina, as well as those responsible for project activities in the structural divisions.

Projects developed and implemented by students allow for a significant expansion of resource capabilities. Students actively generate ideas, exchange knowledge and experience, and improve their teamwork skills. They need to constructively resolve disagreements and make decisions collectively to achieve results. All this is extremely important for a specialist entering active working life, emphasized Yulia Akimova, Head of the Center for Team Building and Project Solutions at IPMET.

All projects received high marks from customers, and final qualifying works were awarded “excellent” marks by state examination committees.

The Institute implements defenses of final qualification works in various formats, providing high-quality methodological and organizational support. NSU developed a board game "Startup Race"

NSU Startup Studio developed a board game "Startup Race", which simulates the actions of a startup in a real market. The game includes all stages of a startup's life – from developing an idea to exiting the project. It allows you to show students and anyone interested in and planning to engage in entrepreneurship in a simple form what awaits them in the market. The game is implemented in a rare genre of "strategic puzzle", at the moment there are no analogues on the market. In the near future, a boxed version of the game will appear, which will be available for pre-order. Anyone can buy it.

The game is structured as follows: participants roll dice in accordance with the stage of the startup's life, which is announced in advance by the game host. They draw cards from the deck, presented as Tetris figures. The figures build a line, which, in essence, reflects the entire life cycle of the project. Cards or figures are opportunities (for example, fundraising) or risks.

The first stage of startup development is the idea, when the project is just emerging. It is the easiest for players, since at the very beginning, participants have the most cards and it is easiest to lay the foundation for further development of the project. The next stage is MVP (Minimum Viable Product), that is, the creation of a minimum viable product. At this stage, some obstacles to the development of the project appear, for example, the idea has not come true or the participant cannot achieve certain technical indicators. The number of figures decreases.

The next stage is Product-Market Fit (PMF), i.e. checking the product's compliance with the market. At this stage, players develop a concept taking into account the real market situation, a marketing plan, and the project gets its first real clients. At the same time, risks arise that can destroy the project.

Next comes the scaling stage, when the project can already attract fundraising funds, which is also reflected in the game. Fundraising funds are special cards that provide a significant boost to the further development of the project. The last stage is exiting the project, which is associated with the greatest risks for the creator. Investments can also be attracted at this stage, but the opportunities for scaling are limited. This is one of the longest stages for the project and its founder. Possible exit strategies include selling the business, shares, public offering of shares (IPO), etc.

— A player can develop several projects simultaneously and build different strategies on several markets — tracks. It is very important that your main project, on which you place a high bet, has repeating figures. There are risks — these are cards that can remove one of the figures within the entire chain, which can lead to the collapse of the project. There are specialized cards — fundraising, which, on the contrary, give you additional opportunities. In terms of Tetris, these are the most “favorable” figures — for example, a long straight line. You can simultaneously invest in several projects or develop only one, but in any case, your task is to successfully develop the project, go through all the stages and bring the startup to the final stage as quickly as possible, — explained Konstantin Kravtsov, an employee of the NSU Startup Studio.

The game simulates market competition, so within its framework you can hinder or, conversely, help your rivals. Also here are such mandatory elements of entrepreneurial activity as risk assessment and diversification, choice of development strategy – conservative or risky. Thus, the game in a simplified mechanical form simulates the actions of a person who develops his startup on the market.

The game is designed for different groups of people, including those who are not very knowledgeable about the startup market; children also actively play it.

— The Startup Race is not just entertainment, but a tool for involving the general public in entrepreneurship. It helps to understand that a startup is not just a “cafe”, but an innovative, fast-growing business that scales. The NSU Startup Studio team plans to replicate the game. At first, it will be packaged in a boxed version, and then it will be available for pre-order. Career Trajectory "Intern": Polytechnic University Raises New Generation of Teachers

60 young teachers — representatives of all 12 SPbPU institutes — have become graduates of the retraining program "Pedagogical Start". The program is a mandatory part of the career trajectory "Intern", intended for master's students and final-year specialists, as well as postgraduate students planning their professional career as a teacher or researcher.

The program participants successfully defended their final theses and received diplomas of professional retraining. Many of them will continue their teaching activities in the new academic year as assistants.

"The career trajectory "Intern" was launched for the first time at the Polytechnic University this academic year as part of the implementation of the policy in the field of forming career trajectories for the professional development of teaching staff from among the faculty," said Lyudmila Pankova, Vice-Rector for Educational Activities at SPbPU. "Graduates of the "Pedagogical Start" program are our successor, who will help current teachers transform the university's educational programs to achieve technological leadership in our country."

The professional retraining program "Pedagogical Start" included a large block of theoretical training, allowing to master modern educational technologies, regulatory foundations of pedagogical activity, methods of working in the digital environment of SPbPU, as well as pedagogical internship under the guidance of mentors – leading teachers of higher schools and departments of the university.

The pedagogical internship became the core of the entire retraining program, allowing the interns, on the one hand, to adopt the experience of the best teachers in the relevant professional field, and on the other hand, to apply all the theoretical knowledge they had acquired in practice, trying themselves out as teachers, noted Elena Zima, Director of the SPbPU Education Quality Center and Head of the Pedagogical Start program.

During the defense of their final theses, the interns presented their experience of implementing the chosen teaching method and the developed fragment of the online course in the electronic information and educational environment of the Polytechnic. It is especially valuable and worthy of respect that the newly-minted teachers mastered the program in parallel with the preparation of diplomas in the main educational programs.

Summer school at the Polytechnic: 88 participants from different parts of Russia

The Polytechnic University held its eighth annual Summer School, an educational intensive for high school students that brought together talented children from all over the country. This year, 88 high school students from St. Petersburg and other regions of Russia who passed a competitive selection took part.

The Summer School program included four areas that combined theory, practice, and excursions to leading enterprises. The students visited UEC-Klimov, the Petersburg Tractor Plant, the Institute of Linguistic Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences, NIIEFA, the IT Contact company, and the Volkhov Hydroelectric Power Station. In the final, they defended solutions to cases provided by the organizers.

On the Wings of Polytech track, the participants worked on optimizing the wing design. They created a model in KOMPAS-3D, conducted virtual tests in ANSYS, calculated the load and lift at different angles of attack. The final stage was 3D printing of the wing and its testing on a special stand. The guys presented the results in the form of an engineering report with the defense of the project. The teachers of the program were engineers of the Higher School of Power Engineering and the Scientific and Educational Center "Aircraft Engines and Power Plants" PISh CI Nikita Izbyakov, Andrey Shirokih and Anastasia Bodunova.

Participants in the track "Energovaybe: how to tame the energy current and not burn out" successfully designed an efficient power supply system for a private home. They analyzed the needs of future residents and developed an optimal layout for electrical appliances, including sockets, switches, and lighting fixtures. To ensure reliable power supply, students calculated the parameters of the key elements of the system and prepared a detailed power distribution plan. The project took into account modern requirements for safety, energy efficiency, and ease of use.

The students studied electric power engineering with maximum focus on practical applicability. Testing the operation of electrical appliances, conducting experiments on connecting light bulbs, the first modeling in a popular engineering application, developing their own power supply scheme – the participants of the Summer School had no time to get bored, – noted Maria Lyulina, senior lecturer of the Higher School of Electric Power Systems.

In the track "Linguistics in the Digital Age: from Data Analysis to Artificial Intelligence", schoolchildren analyzed excerpts from English textbooks for grades 7–11 to assess their complexity. Using special metrics and automatic text processing tools, they found out how the "from simple to complex" principle is observed in the school curriculum. They performed energy-kinematic calculations, created a 3D model, and analyzed various production technologies, including traditional processing and 3D printing. The intensive course allowed future engineers to master modern methods of designing mechanical systems and understand the principles of choosing optimal production solutions.

Summer School "Cryptography and Information Security" Started in Saint Petersburg

From July 7 to 21, the summer school "Cryptography and Information Security" is taking place at the Saint Petersburg State University of Aerospace Instrumentation. It is a traditional event organized by the Cryptographic Center (Novosibirsk) and the International Mathematical Center in Akademgorodok.

More than 200 teachers and students, postgraduates and schoolchildren from 35 cities of Russia took part in the summer school dedicated to the issues of modern cryptography and information security. Participants will have 15 days of work and interesting communication at the Boiling Point of GUAP: 40 hour-long lectures from leading experts from the scientific field and business, unique offers from the event partners, excursions around St. Petersburg and key enterprises of the city, training and sports games. Double success: the first graduates of SPbPU and Lanzhou University of Economics and Finance received diplomas

The Institute of Industrial Management, Economics and Trade of SPbPU hosted the first graduation of bachelors of the international educational double degree program with Lanzhou University of Economics and Finance (China).

The defense of final qualification works in the direction of "Economics" (profile "Finance") was held in English on the campus of Lanzhou University of Economics and Finance in Gansu Province. Students presented the results of their research on current issues of finance, economic analysis and investment management. The examination committee from SPbPU included the director of the Higher School of Engineering and Economics of IPMEiT Dmitry Rodionov, associate professor of VIES and program director Daria Krasnova, associate professors of VIES Ekaterina Burova and Evgeny Konnikov. The members of the committee highly appreciated the level of preparation of the graduates.

It was very nice to see the guys and take part in the defense of their research achievements. Joint defenses not only strengthen academic ties, but also allow for the exchange of best practices in training future financiers, says Daria Krasnova, head of the international educational program.

"It was an invaluable experience that allowed me not only to present the results of my research to an international commission, but also to get acquainted with Russian approaches to economics and finance.
